GMA’s stigma

FUNNY is the joke that the re-appearance of Virgilio Garcillano was purposely timed for Southeast Asian Games so he could rig the scores for the Philippines so that Gloria Arroyo would have something to brag about again.

What is not funny is the insinuation by Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra that there is some rigging of the games to favor the Philippines, the host country.

These are some of the quotes by Thaksin as reported by The Nation, a Thai newspaper: “Why do results turn out that way? I don’t know what to say… I have been following the SEA Games closely and believe that the SEA Games should exist to help athletes, lift their standard. It should not be about winning gold medals”

“If the SEA games continue to be like his, then it will become less popular because they have put a priority for medals over athletic spirit.”

“It’s normal to win or lose. But it’s not nice if we host such Games and do this to other countries. In sports, I believe we have to develop athletic skills and good sportsmanship. We should not focus only on medals and forget about being good sports.”

Thaksin suggested that the issue might be included in the Asean Leaders meeting which will be held on Dec. 12 in Kuala Lumpur. “We may have to have an unofficial summit among leaders to discuss how to uplift the spirit and standard of the Games, otherwise the SEA Games will no longer be of interest for the region.”

As expected Philippine officials involved in the SEA Games all denied that there is something irregular in the winning of Philippine athletes. Gloria Arroyo ordered “a thorough and impartial investigation” and for the submission of an “impartial report within 24 hours.”

Why even specify that the report should be “impartial”? Doesn’t it go without saying that a truthful report is impartial?

The Thai premier’s insinuations may be baseless, but the fact that the country has a president who is a cheat makes it easy for everybody to believe that there is cheating in a contest being supervised by the Arroyo administration.

Thaksin’s comments show the depths that Gloria Arroyo has brought the country down with her lying and cheating. Arroyo and her people know it. A marginal note in the Political Security Situationer presented to the Cabinet last October said “Indifference of international community to GMA leadership (Japan, China, Germany, EU and Muslim countries.” That’s in addition to “poor acceptability of GMA in Bush administration.”

They will now have to add Asean countries. A few months back, a Malaysian parliamentarian compared their trade minister, Rafidah Aziz, who was involved in an irregularity, to Gloria Arroyo. And now, Thailand.

Foreign leaders don’t respect Arroyo. This was most evident in the recent APEC leaders meeting in Busan, South Korea. Not one of the 20 leaders agreed to have a one-on-one meeting with her. The Department of Foreign Affairs tried to arrange one-on-one meetings for her with a few leaders, notably US President Bush. They were all too busy for her.

In diplomacy, a one-on-one meeting is where two leaders sit down together with some members of their staff to discuss issues common to both countries. A variation to that is called “pull aside” meetings. The two leaders agree that during a break in the summit, they go to one side of the room and, together with their respective staff, talk. There were also no takers for even a pull aside meeting with her.

As a good host, South President Roh Moo-hyun of Korea, was agreeable to a meeting with her but since he will be coming to Manila on Dec. 14, it was decided that their bilateral meeting would be held in Manila.

Yet, back in Manila, Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye claimed that Bush and Arroyo had a one-on-one meeting. A Malacañang release said, “She held one-on-one meetings with US President George W. Bush, South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and other APEC leaders on the side of the summit meeting and discussed issues of mutual interest to their respective countries.”

In his column, Bunye said,” At the sidelines of the APEC summit, President Gloria met with US President George W. Bush.” He mentioned other APEC leaders.

Bunye continued: “President Bush expressed concern about the situation in Myanmar and President Gloria agreed to support efforts in the United Nations, particularly in the United Nations Security Council, where the Philippines is currently a non-permanent member, to help spur democratic reforms in Myanmar.” He mentioned other topics like avian flu and terrorism.

DFA officials said Bush discussed those things with Asean leaders during the ASEAN-US meeting, also in Busan. To say that Bush told those things in a one-on-one meeting with Arroyo is like a reporter who reported statements made during a press conference as an exclusive interview. It’s misrepresentation. It’s dishonest.

Today’s stories about Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra’s remarks on alleged biased officiating in the SEA gamesabsolutely spoiled my day. This is the consequence of having a president who is a big-time cheater. Now we are being branded as a nation of cheats. Let us kick Gloria out of office now! She is dragging us all down to hell.

However, what makes me really angry is the fact that the accuser himself, Thaksin Shinawatra, is a loathsome, human rights violator in his own country. He is hated by Muslim Thais because of his murderous repression of legitimate dissent in the southern part of that country. His family, who owns the mammoth Shin Corp, is persecuting freedom of speech activist and journalist Supinya Klangnarong. Clearly, Thaksin has no business lecturing us about fair play!

I think we should boycott the Asian Indoor Games in Thailand next month. To our athletes, we throw our full support to all of you, with or without medals. And thank you for making Filipinos proud.

    Sincerely yours,

    Joey Dimaandal

If GMA really had a one-on-one with Bush, where are the pictures? Bunye is, should and will not be believed. His biggest problem is that he tries to put a spin to events even when there is nothing to spin, except lies. Even if Ate Glo and Dubya just bumped into each other in the corridor, Bunye would still have tried to sell it as a one-on-one. Well he should tell his story to the marines.

On the subject of clever or misleading wordsmithing, I remember seeing a tabloid headline during the Reagan presidency that proclaimed “Reagan Sleeps With Thatcher.” What followed was a photo of President Ronald Reagan seated on one side of a conference table next to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Reagan’s eyes were closed, apparently from being tired or sleepy. I chuckled. The headline was clever, but not maliciously misleading. Yung example above na ibinigay mo from a Malacanang release, yan ay deliberate na misleading, IMHO.

  4. Anna de Brux Anna de Brux

My 15 yr old daughter was peering behind my shoulders while I was reading the news on the net. The headline was about the alleged cheating in the SEA games. Her reaction was “What? They cheat in sports too?”

I don’t know if the sportspeople cheated, I don’t know if there is any truth at all about the allegations but what I do know is that Gloria has made it easy for people all over the world to believe that the Philippines is a nation of cheats.

Appaling, really, terribly, incredibly bad image.

  5. bfronquillo bfronquillo

The thing is that Thailand is one of the biggest cheaters in sports, particularly boxing. A Pilipino amateur boxer has to knockout his opponents to win in Bangkok.
They know how to do influence foreign boxing judges and has been habitually doing it in competitions that they host. Now that they are losing in the Philippines they are not attributing it to the questionable abilities of their athletes but to our allegedly influencing the judges to favor our athletes, “kasi gawain nila, kaya suspitsoso si Thaksim.” “Ang nang-iisa ay ayaw maiisahan.”
But in fairness, Thaksim is not attacking the Philippines particulary but the whole SEA Games where the host somehow come on top of the heap, almost always. If these games is being held in Thailand, they will be on top, Thaksim and his Olympic Committee will see to that.

  6. Ellen, A very interesting article on the role of the FG in the SEA Games HAS DISAPPEARED from the Inquirer Website OVERNIGHT from yesterday. But I found it on Google Cache and have republished it…checkout Philippine Commentary

I am as proud as the next guy when Filipinos are winning medals in the SEA Games. I am hoping that whatever compaints other countries may have would be resolved honourably and to the satisfaction of all parties.
I must draw attention, though, to the practice of drawing political dividends from the SEA Games. Just when one columnist (in another paper) is giving credit to certain characters, The Nation (a Thai daily) headlined PM Thaksin’s very carefully-crafted comments regarding the outcome of the games.
Too quick in trying to get attributions, they get the well-deserved and embarrassing retribution!

  8. Dean, it’s a good thing you were able to retrieve the article on FG’s magnanimity to the athletes as revealed by Eric Buhain.

Unlike Midas that turns into gold everything that he touches, Mike Arroyo turns gold into mud. Bumabaho.

  9. A DFA officer who was in Busan was trying to justify the use of the word one-on-one saying there were occassions that GMA and Bush really talked. His words: “There was one time, he pulled her aside and he bent to kiss her. He nearly toppled.” That’s his idea of one-on-one which Trade secretary Peter Favila described as “fruitful and meaningful.”

Or they could have also had their one-on-one moment during the break when they were on their way to the rest room.

  10. I think the author of the article was a veronica uy. Also, just now, the article has reappeared on the INQ7 website, but it has changed! i guess like weblogs, they also update their stories (of course), strange thing is it has the same time stamp as the original article and Google cache also has the new version. i guess i will chalk it up to “editorial prerogative” which we as bloggers also exercise. I
won’t read anything sinister in it. Just recalling what happened to PCIJ and that TRO

  11. that disappearing article is much ado over nothing, rizalist. i wouldn’t get too excited over it. 😉

    Ellen,

Our DFA colleague who tried to redefine “one-on-one” was engaging in sophistry. A one-on-one is actually a bilateral meeting with the close aides and note-takers of the top honchos present. It is arranged well in advance and an agenda is previously set. From what I gather, this did not happen between GMA and Bush at the APEC meeting in Busan.

Our dear colleague was just doing his job though by giving his own definition. To him or her, I say “nice try.”

  13. E-mail from Stravinsky:

It’s not just the Thais and Malaysians who have complained. The Vietnamese earlier have done so (you have to correct your editorial
writer) and the Indonesians also have complained. That makes four.

  14. Enforcer, you are right. They were able to sell that to some reporters who didn’t know any better.

It all boils down to dishonesty.

  15. Anna de Brux Anna de Brux

Oh migosh! This is just unbelievable.

Philippine credibility is down to ZERO. Our poor athletes who must have worked hard to get to where they are have just been stripped of their gold, morally speaking.

Ellen is absolutely right! Gloria’s stigma is Filipino stigma.

  16. emmaroxas emmaroxas

I have always been ashamed that we have such a pretender and usurper in Malacanang, who goes to international meetings to represent us. I am ashamed of the fact that when she shakes hand with world leaders, they all look down at her with her pygmy size and all. It would have been better perhaps if she has great statesmanship and moral character that can cancel out the shortness of her physical stature. But as it is that woman GMA has really nothing to show for herself. Not any height of mind or body. Nor even honesty.

Before, I used to be proud of being a Filipina and earned the respect of my international friends. Now, I am terribly ashamed to get questions like, “how could the Filipinos have chosen someone like that woman for president?” My reply of course was and will always be, “We did not choose her; she just climbed into Malacanang and refused to get out. She is not our president and will never be.” She just enjoys parading herself before an international crowd who in turn enjoy looking down at her. For this I am utterly ashamed. She should never represent a people who have not chosen her and who desperately want her out of the position she usurped.

  20. Ellen, I got a nice email and visit from JV of INQ7.net on the “disappearing” article on FG. I posted it last night, and yeah karl, there wasn’t anything to get too excited about. Nice probe of how newspapers edit their stories and the daily publishing cycle. Basic lesson is: Google never forgets and no one publishing on the web can hide anything, (not that INQ7 was, just my overly skeptical antennae)

Talk about stigma – GLORIAHAN will be tops on Arroyo legacy. This latest imbroglio on sports cheating casts a not so pretty picture of the pinoy on the international scene. It is very much indicative of the cheating cancer that started from the top. The only other activity I know that starts from the top is digging holes.

  29. Yuko in Tokyo Yuko in Tokyo

Much as I wanted to see the Philippine flag being risen and the Philippine anthem being played at international sports competition, I never bothered counting Philippine medals in the recent SEA Games. Why? It’s just so suspicious considering the poor performances of Filipinos in other games, even the bigger Asian Games participated by biggies like China, Australia and Japan, especially outside of the Philippines, and with no world record set, the SEA Games looks more like a competition of losers! And with the GMA stigma, I can’t blame the Thai PM to make sure his country’s athletes are treated fairly especially with the possibility of another “Hello GarSEA”! (I just loved that text joke!)

I’ll start counting Philippine medals in the Asian Games, Beijing Olympics and other international sports competition outside of the Gloria-Garci territory.

  30. Enforcer Enforcer

Yuko has a very good point. There’s nothing to be excited about in the SEA Games because the standards are much lower than the Asian and Olympic Games.

The SEA Games are a consolation round for countries that in general have not made the grade in the Asiad and Olympiad.

While we may hate Gloria, her phone pal Garci and Mike Piggy Pidal Arroyo and all the guys who connive to keep Gloria, the cheat, the liar, the thief in power, I still believe that the Philippine athletes who went through the rigours of competing must not be slighted.

They exerted efforts, sweated blood and tears to compete with other athletes who exerted similar efforts, similar tears.
Those efforts should to be commended.

Our athletes may be considered substandard in comparisson to the athletes of nations who give them better food, pay, housing but these Philippine athletes did their best. I don’t think any of us here could have fared better.

I agree that Gloria’s stigma as a cheat rubbed on our athletes but that isn’t their fault. It is my belief that these athletes and what they have achieved don’t deserve to be denigrated.

If we cannot give them the accolade that they deserve, or the encouragement that they need, the least we can do is to keep quiet. It is only fair to do so.

Gloria’s fault is hers alone and not that of our athletes’.

  37. Anelle Y2K Anelle Y2K

During the SEAGames, we saw how our athletes worked so hard, they drove themselves to the limit for a few seconds of glory. It wasn’t the incentive of money that they were going to get, but the honor they can give to the country and that it is i believe is the true essence and idea of sports. These athletes were able to lift the sagging morale of the Filipinos, kahit ilang araw lang nagkaisa tayong mga Pilipino bilang isang bansa. Sana magpatuloy ang kanilang tagumpay at mawala na ang “crab mentality” ng karamihan sa mga Pilipino na siyang pumapatay at sumisira sa maraming buhay…

Nobody is denigrating the achievements of our athletes. What we are simply pointing out is that their accomplishments during the SEA Games should be taken in their proper context: those games are simply not up to the standards of the Asiad or the Olympiad.

We realize the need for good news to feed the feel good factor. But we think this should be balanced off by some realism and humility.

Everyone should concentrate on getting rid of Gloria and her husband. While they are usurping Malacanang, the country will have no first class athletes to speak of.

What I suggest is to force Mike (P)iggy Arroyo to run around the Rizal statdium for a few hours till his tongue hangs. Then make his glorious election cheat and thief of a wife to swim the full length of the sea separating the Babuyan islands and Luzon.

    That will teach them.
