Aling Maria from Tondo and Triccie from Forbes Park marched together with some 10, 000 others yesterday in Makati chanting “Gloria, patalsikin! (Oust Gloria)” to celebrate International Women’s Day.
In a joint statement, women’s groups said, “We demand that Gloria step down, from the sake of our millions of women and their families whose quality of life has deteriorated over the years as a result of her insensitive, anti-women, anti-poor policies and programs. We want a government that truly respects, protects and promotes women’s human rights.”
The women also said: “Women have found no support from Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, a woman president. Her 10-point agenda makes no mention of any gender concern. She has denied official support for full reproductive health and family planning services, thus, putting at risk women’s health and lives.”
They also condemned the repressive actions of the Arroyo administration, which was highlighted by the arrest of Akbayan partylist Rep. Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel in a separate rally in Quezon City.
Former Transportation Secretary Josie Lichauco said the arrest of Hontiveros-Baraquel and another partylist Rep. Liza Maza (last week) is lamentable. “We have women leaders in this country who are being subjected to warrantless arrest. How can this be done by a woman president to her fellow women?”
Former Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman said Arroyo is not a good model for women because “Siya ay nandaya, nagsinungaling at nagnakaw. (She cheated, she lied, she stole.)”
All political colors were represented. Among the groups who participated in the rally were Bangon Pilipinas-Women, Black and White Movement, Forces of the United Middle Class, Gabriela, Gabriela Women’s Party, Global Call to Action Against Poverty, KMLG, Laban ng masa, Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino, NCW, OFW Family Club, Welga ng Kababaihan, women march, Womenspeak, BMP, Sanlakas.
There were also women employees of the National Housing Authority.
