Politician’s initiative yun. Pekeng Initiative yun.

Tama sina Sen. Joker Arroyo at Sen. Nene Pimentel.

* * *

“Samantala, lets go on with our own lives, umpisa pa lang tayo, patapos na sila.”

….As a Catholic, I was a bit miffed in seeing the picture of those in attendance at Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales’ first mass. There was a Muslim official and his Muslim wife, a Protestant and Gloria Arroyo. I had no problem with Gloria, who is a devout Catholic and adheres to majority of the Ten Commandments.

    An addition:
“No wonder that she did not hold hands with those beside her during the Lord’s Prayer. As the only Catholic who believes in the Mass, she had to keep to her own faith.”

It’s supposed to be a humble celebration of the Holy mass and a high-profile celebration of Cardinal Rosales’ appointment as a cardinal. They might have invited people from different denominations, making the occassion an inter-faith gathering. The mass is a separate celebration, although non-catholics are supposed to be civil in this celebration.
Holding hands during the singing of the Lord’s Prayer is not mandatory. As a Catholic “President”, she could initiate hand-holding with the non-catholics without any resistance. She opted not to as a “devout” catholic keeping the faith to herself. Parang “People’s Initiative” ‘ika nga.

Washington State (not Washington DC) has a lot of experience with initiatives. Here’s a link about Tim Eyman, an individual who got a reputation, both good and bad, in the initiatives game.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Eyman

If you are able to open the link and read the article, notice that in at least two cases, his initiatives won but were later declared unconstitutional by the Washington State Supreme Court for having more than one subject matter.

Of course, the initiative process in the Philippines is different. I just can’t help comparing because it is very obvious that the so-called “People’s Initiative” for cha-cha is very broad in its scope. It would never pass in Washington State on substance, but more so, because it would be shown for what it is–not a true people’s initiative but a government sponsored mutilation of the existing constitution. But then again, ibahin natin ang Pilipinas.

    From The Daily Tribune:

“P2.6 billion for the plebiscite represents a wasteful use of taxpayers’ money: The government just raised the value-added tax (VAT) rate from 10 to 12 percent — in effect increasing the tax burden of every Filipino. Why spend P2.6 billion for a referendum that is of dubious value? The amount is better spent for teacher training, new school buildings and classrooms, improved health care and more roads and irrigation systems. For example, P2.6 billion may be used to build approximately 10,400 classrooms.

The country’s political and economic problems flow from the doubtful legitimacy of the current leadership and poor governance – not the form of government. Spending P2.6 billion for the plebiscite is a monumental waste of taxpayers’ money.”

YES, POOR GOVERNANCE INDEED. UNANG TAON PA LANG NG ADMINISTRASYON NI GMA AY HINDI LANG POOR GOVERNANCE KUNDI FAKE GOVERNANCE PA!!! SOBRANG IMMORAL SA PAGWAWALDAS NG PERA NG BAYAN!!! THE PHILIPPINES NEEDS A SAVIOR FROM THE EVILS OF GMA!!!

Are they proud of their parents, their spouses?

Its a run away train!!! yeah its running, but where to go, its like a mrery-go-round, round and round where it stop nobody knows. ganyan ang tren na pinatakbo ni gloria.

Speaking of J de venecia, when will he learn that he is being used by gloria and her clowns for chacha, after getting what they want, de venecia will be side stepped. does de venecia thinks that gloria will endorse him, as the prime minister??? I think not, hehehehehehehe, yan ang napapala ng mga hudas.

Masyado nilang minamadali, take a look at the senate hearing yesterday, even comelec comm borra admitted there was cheating, what does it mean???it only means that the legitimacy of the leprechaun is highly questionabale, of course it is understandably, that her lawyer and her clowns will say its dead, when does this issue becomes dead, when the people can ask or question her legitimicay??? that’s the power of the people,we can question it.

    BATONG-BUHAY

For your information, most of the people who were at the the mass last saturday (FVR/de castro/drilon/pimentel etc)most of them left after the mass, they did not join the lunch, maybe tehy cannot stomach gloria’s presence at the luncheon in honor of cardinal rosales.

FYI ulit, Atienza muscled his way in, to be seated in the same row with gloria, atienza is supposed to be seated at the second row, but knowing how good atienza as an ass licker, he will have his way (kapal talaga)

OF PUBLIC HIGHWAYS, FERTILIZER FUND, Marcos money from Swiss banks, atbp.

Gloria Arroyo’s Cha-Cha initiative is like a runaway train. It runs loose without definite destination. There’s no valid reason to waste P 6.5 billion just to perpetuate political power. The estimated 6.5 billion pesos budget for plebiscite should use to build school buildings, hospitals and farm roads.

Thank you for your note Jinx, however I’m not after the goings on before and after the mass. I was just taken aback by Ducky Paredes’ statement in his column proclaiming Gloria to be a devout catholic and her adherence to most of the ten commandments. Also, he seems to show displeasure with the presence of muslims and a protestant in a catholic mass. What’s wrong with that? Isn’t it admirable to see a multi-faith group honoring a new cardinal? Parang lumalabas tuloy na salvation is exclusive to a particular religion.

  13. myrna myrna

I agree with Batong Buhay. I too was a bit taken aback by Ducky’s line.

Although Gloria “professes” to be a Catholic, I agree with you that there’s nothing wrong with allowing Muslims inside the Temple of God and I say idem re your pronouncement that Gloria ain’t being a Catholic at all because she lies, steals, cheats, etc., etc., etc.

I am prepared to believe that there are more of our Muslim brothers in Mindanao who are far more qualifed to be Catholics compared to Gloria. Besides, I am just as surprised to see Gloria reciting Our Father knowing that she is thinking of how to further con our people.

Her presence in the mass is her prerogative but it must stop there!

Ms Anna d brux, I believe Ducky got lost in the meaning of the word catholic. You see in the Philippines the word catholic refers only to the Roman Catholic church while in the Creed of the Apostles that came out of the Edict of Milan, the word catholic means universal. Universal as in “universal body of believers” to which Protestants profess to belong.

But during the Protestant Reformation that swept through Europe and led by Martin Luther, they were considered DESTABILIZERS and were burned at the stakes because they were criticizing the doctrines and dared to make a stand in direct contrast to that of the Roman Catholic Church.

FVR is a protestant and he is one of those GMA considers as destabilizers of her government. It should be an honor for him that Gloria did not hold his hands during the mass, however underserved the honor was. But right now he is CLUELESS.

I am a protestant and we recite the Apostles’ Creed that says in part: “ I believe in the holy catholic church…..” in our regular worship services. This means that we belong to the universal body of Christ. WE belong to the Original Apostolic Church but not to the Roman Catholic Churh.

However, Ducky is right in one thing, FVR had it coming when he attended that mass where he does not belong. But you see, FVR has long been disowned, without his knowledge, by a lot of Protestants and Born Again Christians.

  27. anna de brux anna de brux

    Hi BFR,

Thanks for the confirmation that Protestans are catholics too. Yes, I realize that Ducky got lost in the meaning of catholic.

As we say over here, Protestants of the Anglican faith are also catholics (like my husband) and they recite the Apostles’ Creed as we do the Roman Catholic way.

However, being of the Roman Catholic faith myself, I am often surprised by the way some Philippine Catholics of the Roman Catholic variety, like Gloria Macapal-Arroyo and those Arroyo dishonorable generals, could be so callous – that they tolerate stealing, lying, cheating, etc as a part of daily life.

Moreover, I find it so surprising that Gloria Macapal-Arroyo, a so-called devout Roman Catholic but of the Philippine variety should shamelessly use God as her excuse to steal, lie and cheat with impunity.

She’s become rhinoceros and alligator skinned that she can no longer feel the “kutya” of Archbishop Oscar Cruz when he said that (alluding to Gloria’s boast) “Talking to God is called prayer but when God speaks back to you, that’s called schizophrenia.”

Very soon, because she no longer can distinguish truth from lie, her head will start to spin and her hallucinatin might goad her into ordering a statue of herself planted in every church to be called Santa Gloria…

    Naku po!!!!!

  28. myrna myrna

pag si Gloria naging Santa, talagang iba na ang mundong gagalawan. sa birthday niya ngayon DAW, ang only wish ko is for her to have longer life, para naman pag tanggal na siya sa pwesto di medyo matagal din siyang mag suffer. di gaya ng nangyari kay milosevic….

Decoding secret world of Opus Dei
    Friday, 16 September 2005

The successful novel The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown has raised public interest in the controversial Catholic lay group Opus Dei, depicting it as a sect focused on wealth and power.

As part of the BBC’s Who Runs Your World? series, the BBC’s Max Seitz travelled to Spain – the country where Opus Dei was founded and seems to be most influential.

Opus Dei – which in Latin means “Work of God” – has been accused of manipulating its followers, but denies all such claims.

People on the streets of the Spanish capital, Madrid, told me that they believe Opus Dei is a secret society which has infiltrated politics and businesses.

“Opus Dei has a lot of power in Spain, and it’s also influential in other countries,” one person told me.

“There are lots of things we still don’t know about them – they just let us know what they want,” said another.

Opus Dei is a powerful organisation which uses its schools and universities to grow more influential.”

    Opus Dei saint

But what’s the truth behind this perception? Is Opus Dei as powerful as people think?

This Catholic group claims around 85,000 members around the world, one third of them in Spain. Members are encouraged to promote the evangelising mission through their professional work.

In other words, they aim to be very successful in their jobs while at the same time being charitable to other people and trying to attract more followers.

In 2002, thousands of pilgrims from around the world travelled to the Vatican when Pope John Paul II canonised the founder of Opus Dei, Josemaria Escriva de Balaguer, in a “fast track” process only 27 years after his death.

He also granted Opus Dei the status of “personal prelature” – which has given the group some independence within the Catholic Church. That is why some say that Opus Dei grew more influential in the Vatican during the papacy of John Paul II.

But Opus Dei’s spokesman Jack Valero denies it: “The number of people from Opus Dei working in the Vatican is very reduced: five or maybe six people, including the spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls. The influence of Opus Dei in the Holy See has been exaggerated.”

But critics say there are more clergymen with links to Opus Dei, and that they have created a “Church within the Church”, something that the Catholic group denies.

Opus Dei has also had prominent representatives among governments and companies, although they usually do not publicly recognise their membership.

The Spanish sociologist Alberto Moncada – himself a former Opus Dei member – explains that the link between Opus Dei and power could be traced back to the 50’s, when two representatives of the group were appointed ministers during General Franco’s regime.

“Franco’s regime was a period of political and economic success for Opus Dei, but at the same time has given the group a bad name,” he said.

“People still remember this old time. However, things have changed. Although some members of Opus Dei are active in politics and businesses nowadays, they don’t act together like a mafia. That’s not true.”

The UK education secretary, Ruth Kelly, has recently confirmed reports that she is a member of Opus Dei.

In Latin America, Colombian President Alvaro Uribe is also said to be a member – something he has not confirmed.

Opus Dei’s spokesman Jack Valero says religion is something that should be kept private.

Opus Dei membership is a private matter,” he said. “We don’t publicise our members list. Some high-profile politicians say publicly that they belong to Opus Dei, yes, but that’s not relevant to their job as government officials or congressmen. What’s really important is how they do their job.”

It is difficult to pin down just how much money Opus Dei has. The group is decentralised into scores of foundations around the world, and it does not publicise its general accounts. Members have to donate a significant part of their income.

But maybe the most overlooked aspect of Opus Dei’s power is that it is said to wield over its followers. Accusations have been made of brainwashing and manipulation in centres where celibate members live, the so-called “numeraries”.

“Life is schizophrenic in Opus Dei centres,” says former numerary Carmen Charo.

“Each member has lots of spiritual tasks to fulfil, like praying, going to mass every day, training other followers, and his or her development as a free person isn’t really considered – one is always under the orders of the spiritual leaders, and also under their strict control. The same happens with your money.”

Members of Opus Dei respond to these criticisms by saying that they are normal people working in the midst of the world just like anyone else, and that they are free and can leave whenever they want.

“It’s a vocation,” says Jose Maria Villalon. “You can freely choose your way of life and I have chosen to find God in my work as a member of Opus Dei.

“Someone within the group could have made some mistake, even myself. That’s normal in any organisation run by human beings. However I completely deny that people are manipulated or brainwashed.”

So are Opus Dei members saints or sinners? Many in Spain say the answer lies somewhere in between.
