Today, while more than 30,000 Filipinos who tried to escape the grinding poverty in the Philippines are scampering for their lives in war-torn Lebanon, 16,000 Filipino troops are making sure that Gloria Arroyo will be able to deliver her State of the Nation address telling us that life has been great in her Enchanted Kingdom.
To stress her point, she will present boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, Miss International Lara Quigaman, the gold medalists of Southeast Asian games and the Filipinos who made it to Mt. Everest.
While those Filipinos trapped in Lebanon have to endure the endless firepower of Israel pounding Hizbollah targets, Filipinos here will have to endure a different kind visual assault.
Presidential chief of staff Michael Defensor said Arroyo’s SONA today will not be just a simple speech. “It will be high- tech and interactive. The people can visualize and not just listen to what she will say.”
Since Arroyo cannot tell the nation the truth, she is giving us glitz.
At least one sector of Philippine society refuses to b e impressed. “No amount of flashy audio or visual presentation can hide the deepening poverty in the country”, said Dr. Giovanni Tapang, chairperson of Scientists for Truth, Scientists for Change, who will be outside the Batasan today to show their disgust over Arroyo’s bogus presidency.
“The people are not looking for a high-tech SONA. We are looking for truth, for justice and genuine change,” Tapang said.
Tapang further said that if Arroyo really wants to be interactive, “she should go out and meet the thousands protesting outside and hear how loud their cries are for her to step down.”
He said Arroyo’s pitch to make a “First World Philippines in the next two decades” via her proposal to have mega regions “would not take off unless she addresses the lack of locally based industries and land reform. She hasn’t even given top priority to the budget for research and development for the past few years, how do we expect her to make us a First World country?”
The activist scientist group must belong to some 10 million Filipinos (31 percent) of those who know about Arroyo’s SONA (65 percent of Filipinos) who believe that she does not give a truthful situation of the country, according to a survey conducted by Pulse Asia from June 24 to July 8, 2006. Only 19 percent or roughly six million Filipino adults consider Arroyo’s Sona truthful.
Almost one in two (49 percent) or some 15 million Filipino adults are unable to say whether or not what Arroyo says in those elaborately-produced SONAs, complete with designated applause in specific parts of the speech, are true.
Malacañang has to resort to high-tech gadgets to dazzle a people who continue to disapprove and distrust her. Pulse Asia’s survey on performance and trust on Arroyo showed that 44 percent or about 21 million Filipino adults express disapproval for Arroyo’s performance while 47 percent or nearly 22.5 million Filipino adults distrust her.
Pulse Asia noted that the latest figures are practically the same as that in March 2006 (50 percent disapproval and 50 percent distrust).
Only 26 percent have a positive assessment of Arroyo’s work while 23 percent express trust in her.
Twenty-nine per cent are undecided on the matter of presidential performance while 30 percent cannot say whether they trust or distrust her.
Pulse Asia said: “Despite her administration’s aggressive campaigns to highlight several economic programs and numerous social amelioration projects, President Arroyo has yet to regain the public’s trust and the people’s appreciation of her performance as Chief Executive.”
Pulse Asia further noted that “No president before her has experienced as extended a period of low public esteem. Whereas public disenchantment in terms of low approval and trust ratings generally improve for Philippine presidents within two to three quarters, President Arroyo’s deflated approval and trust ratings have proven less tractable and outright improvements in public assessments of her performance and trustworthiness have been slow in coming.”
The high rate of disapproval and distrust of Arroyo as shown in the survey reflects the Filipino people’s desire for the most basic in governance – truth and justice. Instead, the bogus president’s answer is high-tech glitz. That’s the state of the Filipino nation today.
Scams, crooks and frauds dazzle their intended victims with glitz and promise of wealth never before experienced or seen. With the current state our country is in, what we need is truthfulness and sincerity. Unfortunately, these are traits the pretender in the palace does not possess. As for her perfomance for the past year, there were big changes indeed. She had destroyed and bastardized all institutions in trying to cover up her mess. She had abused her authority to the fullest and used her attack dogs to to nible away at any semblance of democracy. The worst, is how she in her lust for power and wealth had pushe more people to live way below the poverty line. This, this is the true state of our nation. No glitz or technological magic can erase these facts.
So Gloria will speak of lies and glitzes on state of kingdom address (SOKA). Natcherly, what else can we expect. The mere fact that 16,000 troops are providing security for her to deliver the message is an indictment on her criminality – malaki ang kanyang atraso sa taumbayan kaya nangangatog ang tuhod kung humarap sa publiko. Sa halip na mahalin siya ng madla, suklam na suklam sila.
GMA will look like a JOKE in her SONA using her “high-tech glitz” to deceive people (AGAIN). However, it doesn’t seem like she’ll succeed in her gimmick. She may be correct in saying that people are “tired of politics and would want to move on.” What she ommitted is that people are TIRED OF GMA and would want to move on WITHOUT GMA.
Doesn’t it make you wonder why GMA needs to be protected by 16,000 soldiers in the Batsan when she delivers her SONA? It definitely says something about her: Aside from being SCARED, it certainly affirms that FILIPINOS HATE GMA. She’s the only Philippine President who needs to be PROTECTED AGAINST FILIPINOS! If GMA needs to be protected by that many soldiers, then she is the Filipinos’ TERRORIST!
“Lying” has become GMA’s trademark. No one can take this honor away from her. And that’s what we’re going to hear at SONA…Lies and lies again. By the way, the Bolante issue seems to have died down. Expect it to vanish in the air like that of Garci and other Malacanang crooks. The Filipinos in the US must rally and protest in front of the US Justice Department to make them see that they are against the apparent cover-up and conspiracy of this Bolante case.

Even though I’m a Filipino, I’m glad our candidate didn’t win the title.

Did you read Inquirer’s story on the Pulse Asia survey? It’s said,”When President Macapagal-Arroyo delivers her sixth State of the Nation Address today, she is politically stronger than she was a year ago.”
I thought it was a different survey from the one reported in other newspapers and mentioned here by Ellen. It turned out it’s the same.
Yes, her approval rating increased from 19 to 26 and her trust rating from 17 to 23 percent. But look at the huge number of Filipinos who disapproves and distrust her: 44 per cent disapproves of her and 47 percent distrusts her.
One in two Filipinos disapproves and distrusts her. And they are jumping with joy over that?
Do you believe these surveys? I don’t. The only one I believe that is made in the Philippines is that of Ibon Foundation. Otherwise, find out who is requesting for such survey and how many of the data have been tampered with.
The best gauge for whether this crook is doing good or not is the condition of the life of the ordinary citizens in areas like Tondo, Payatas, etc. sans those NGOs for example getting donations to build housing, etc. tricks and get half of those donations for their own upkeep!!! That is why I am for the return of the old concept of doing civic activities and charities done by those who have extra to spare without bothering others to contribute to their collection campaign!

What a contrast indeed! I would spend not even a fraction of a second to listen nor watch Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s delivery of her SONA, not because she is not a good public speaker, neither that her voice is incongruent with her physique (which is naturally not her fault), but because I believe that she would only be posturing the usual presidential prevarications which have become her trademark , and the litany of lies and promises which would just be added to what a lady columnist in another major daily called “The SONAs, full promises yet unfulfilled.”
About a year ago, Arroyo dreaded showing her face on television fearing perhaps that chaos could break in more than two-thirds of the households nationwide as viewers might throw anything at hand at their TV sets or hurl fecal invictives upon seeing her most despised visage on screen after her almost a month of public appearance abstinence owing to that infamous “Garci tapes.”
That was the time her top dogs; the Gonzaleses (Raul and Norbert), Defensor and Bunye who espouse canine loyalty to her, wanted forgotten as it was the blackest day in their mistress’ life, when her spinmeisters labored for about a month to devise a defense mechanism that would control the damage she has inflicted on herself.
The best they could do was make this extremely arrogant woman do the “supreme sacrifice,” of apologizing to the nation live on television by admitting that she committed a “lapse in judgment,” when she talked several times to a Comelec commissioner notorious for questionable manipulation of election results.
I do not want to see that spineless House Speaker rise to his feet and give cue to his equally spinelesss followers in Congress to stand up and signify their enthusiastic outburst of applause at every pronouncement Arroyo makes.
Her achievements do not even qualify to fit the definition of ovation used in ancient Rome as a “lesser ceremonial tribute to a hero whose deeds were not great enough to justify a full triumph.” Her deeds are neither great nor heroic.
The real state of the nation is what those 16,000 military and police forces around the Batasang Pambansa shows. They are their to protect this woman from the citizenry which majority has consistently showed their inacceptance of her as their president. She has succeeded in uniting people of different persuasions from all walks of life and of polar differences into a common objective of calling for her resignation and seeing her out of their lives.
She has imposed that “evil trio” of measures: the CPR, 1017 and 464, all of which the Supreme Court unanimously decided as unconstitutional, to prevent any attempts that may emperil her illegal stranglehold of power and obfuscate the grave charges of scandals Arroyo is widely believed to have committed.
The common people, the studentry, the professionals, the clergy, the laity, the civil society and even members of the police and the military have been calling for her resignation and the numger of signatories to the impeachment complaints grows daily. They represent the more than two-thirds (and growing army of)) the citizenry who are fed up with her and who would not shed a tear if she vanishes into thin air.
She does not want to resign but the great majority of the population are resigned to the belief based on the real state the nation is in under Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo this country is irreversibly in its downward spin.
Arroyo should bear in mind that her voice will ring that familiar “Hello Garci,” sound, as it reverberates in the halls of the Batasan, frequently punctuated by the commas of claps of hands of those congressmen whose hands have clasped the bundles of pork barrels and doleouts Arroyo gives so that they would continue to supporting her whims snarl at her enemies.
Before or after her SONA the wives of those congressmen garbed in “extravagant gowns with studded jewelries,” like that lady columnist (not in the Inquirer) wrote, would form the “honor line” wanting their hands to be shook by her (she might have an idea where the pork barrel funds went).
In the cities and in the countryside people are sure to go about their daily grind, not expecting anything from her speech but lies, more lies and more empty promises, as empty as their pantries, their wallets and their stomachs.
That is the true state of the nation.

At the phase this evacuation of the OFWs in Lebanon is going, the rest of the batch of OFWs may not even be able to come home at all especially with both the Israelis and the Hizbollah determined to fight to the end instead.

ito na po dapat may qualification din ang magpost ng blog dito Ellen. Parang kausap natin mga lasingero lang sa kalye eh. hahahahhahaha. Pag nagsalita parang sa kanto kanto lang. And of course sometimes I dont see any reason to argue kasi mga tabas ng dial pansin na sobra ang baba.Wala sa linya ang argumento. Alam natin yan. Example ang mag alwyer kahit liar mas marami di sial nagsasabi ng below the belt kundi yong argumento ng isa ay papatayin ng katunggali. Dito below the belt . Kaya paano magkaroon ng good changes of ideas??????

Whenever I read and hear all those sad events happening in our country, I can’t help but shed a tear or two. Yes, I really do. I’m very worried about the next generations to come. In a way, I agree with your opinion Spartan. I find it hard sometimes to reconcile religion/faith with the realities of politics. I think you misinterpreted my statement thinking I’m willing to forgive GMA. No. Forgiveness comes with justice. That’s the famous slogan of Cory Aquino who still refuses to forgive the Marcoses. This, despite strong demand by the jailed soldiers and the Public Defender’s Office to re-open the Ninoy assassination since new evidences surfaced proving Marcos had no hand in his murder.
When Gloria declared “I’m sorry” no one has forgiven her until this day. How can she be forgiven when she refuses to explain why she’s sorry?
