The killings continue

As we were writing this piece, news came in that another person identified with a progressive organization was killed in Surigao del Sur.

Reports said Hermie Marqueza, a member of local farmers group Kapunungan sa mga Mag-uuma sa Surigao, was killed inside his home in barangay Maitum in Tandag by unidentified gunmen armed with M-14 rifles Monday night.

That was hours after Gloria Arroyo announced in front of the monument of Ninoy Aquino in Intramuros the names of members of a commission that she has created to “conduct an independent probe on killing of media practitioners and militant activists” which has become a daily occurrence while she continues to hold on to her stolen presidency.

Karapatan, a human rights group, said Marqueza is the 729th activist to be murdered under the Arroyo administration since 2001.

The killing of Marqueza bolsters the reading of Sen. Aquilino Pimentel of Arroyo’s pathetic position: She cannot control the military.

“They (military officers) have her by her G-strings and are ready to undress her whenever she displeases them,” Pimentel said.

Many of the ranking officers in the military are where they are now because of their active participation in Arroyo’s cheating in the 2004 elections. She has to satisfy them all the time to keep their mouths shut.

Arroyo’s destructive all-out war against the communists was her way of pandering to the military’s wishes. No way that the inurgency will be eliminated by guns and bullets but that will make the military officers happy and wealthy.

Arroyo’s credibility has sunk so low that nobody expects the Melo Commission to come out with anything expect to absolve Arroyo and her generals.

Rep. Teddy Casiño had a point when he questioned the independence of NBI director Nestor Mantaring and chief state prosecutor Jovencito Zuño. How can these two employees of the government take to task Arroyo and her generals even if they have proofs staring them in their faces?

Bishop Camilo Gregorio saw through the trap and wisely declined the appointment.

The Counsel for the Defense of Civil Liberties urges Arroyo to desist from implementing Executive Order creating ‘The Commission to Conduct an Independent Probe on Killing of Media Practitioners and Militant Activists’ and immediately institute the mechanism for a genuine independent probe acceptable to the victims and the public.

“Absent mechanisms to ensure independence, effectiveness and credibility through transparency and consultations, the latest probe body will be nothing more than a publicity stunt aimed at pacifying the snowballing criticism of the people and the international community over the political killings, without any serious attempt to identify the perpetrators and the masterminds behind these attacks,” Codal said.

Codal finds unacceptable Arroyo’s creation of a probe body to investigate political killings without any consultation from the victims and the human rights sector to assure the public that the body is genuinely independent.

Codal said for any investigating body to be truly independent, it must have fiscal and administrative autonomy from any government institution, especially from the executive.

Codal said: “The Commission must have all the powers under Section 37, Chapter 9, Book I of the Administrative Code of 1987 including the power to issue summons and subpoena duces tecum and contempt powers, specifically the power to facilitate contempt sanctions against anyone who refuses to implement that Commission’s order.

” The President must assure that any member of the AFP, the PNP and any official will appear before the Commission, and that any duly notified executive official who fails to appear will be summarily punished by the President herself with suspension from whatever position or rank until that official appears before the Commission.”

Codal also said that “the body must not only have the power to investigate the killings, abductions, torture and massacres but also the power to prosecute the perpetrators to ensure that no one will belittle its authority.”

Codal urged Congress to issue a joint resolution calling for such an independent body.

Killed inside his home!! No more safe haven … except head for the hills to level the playing field.

Philippines bogus commander in chief Gloria Arroyo and her fascist generals are loose cannons. She relies too much on the military’s support to keep political power. Hello Garci generals hold key military positions as a reward for massive cheating in Mindanao Island during the 2004 national elections. All-out war against the communists resulted to extra-judicial killings of suspected NPA supporters and militant activists. Field units are out of control. The civilian militia unit, the Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu) and military sponsored-death squads may be the perpetrator of heinous crimes and human rights abuses in the countryside. I doubt the Melo Commission’s independence. The presence of two top government officials from Department of Injustice in the Melo fact-finding body tainted its credibility. It’s a Malacanang creation intended to whitewash political killings. It’s another Moro-Moro and waste of tax payers’ money. Mrs. Gloria Arroyo has zero credibility.

Tsk, tsk, tsk,…..hehehehehehe Ms. Ellen have you read the position of the PAMUSA??? They asked the Bush admin to ban the corrupt leaders of the Philippines, hehehehehe… ulit it smack the very face of the TONGressmen who supported the killing of the impeachment.

According to NOGnograles “Who are these people? They convict congressmen who do not follow their whims and caprices? Who are they?” House majority leader Prospero Nograles said. “They are worse than dictators who kill others who do not agree with them. They should file their cases in court,” he added.”

He mentioned that PAMUSA is worse than dictators, but look who’s talking, they are the ones who worse than a dictator. They, the TONGressmen who killed the impeachment are worse than all of the dictators.

Nyak, nyak nyak….. natatakot sila na hindi na sila makatuntong sa US of A, tit-for-tat, if the leprechaun imposes PP1017 and others, PAMUSA is invoking on them “US President George Bush’s Presidential Proclamation 7750 which suspends entry into the US of individuals involved in public corruption “that has a serious adverse effect in specified US interests” surely does, it has adverse effect on the TONGressmen, is SI-raul-O will tell bush he is a destabilizer???

That is for you all TONGressmen who killed the impeachment.

    From Northern Territory News:

US beats Australia to South-East Asia trade

    By staff reporters
    22August2006

THE US could beat Australia to the punch when it clinches a trade deal later this week that may open the door to the lucrative ASEAN group of countries.

The US is set to conclude the agreement with South-Eeast Asia this week that is expected to boost free trade and help Americans benefit from a larger East Asian tariff-busting program.

The trade and investment framework pact is expected to be clinched by US Trade Representative Susan Schwab and her counterparts from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) after talks in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, officials said today.

The US already has trade and investment framework agreements (TIFA) with key individual ASEAN economies, aimed at setting the stage for free trade agreements.

As the upcoming TIFA deal is regional in nature, many expect it to lay the guidelines for a future free trade pact between the 10-member ASEAN and the US, its largest trading partner.

“It’s early to predict what the next step is but the US-ASEAN TIFA arrangement is a positive opening of possibilities on the trade front,” said Ben Dolven, senior director at BrooksBowerAsia, a South-East Asia focused advisory firm.

“It reflects an understanding on the part of the United States that a great deal is happening at the regional level and that the United States wants to be there,” he said.

ASEAN member countries are now the fourth largest trading partner of the United States, with two-way trade totalling about $US150 billion ($197 million) last year.

Trade talks between Australia, New Zealand and South-East Asian officials are progressing but there is some dispute over the place of labour, environment and intellectual property in the negotiations.

Ramon Vicente Kabigting, a director with the Philippines’ department of trade and industry said last week that those areas were sensitive for the 10 ASEAN members and were not up for discussion.

Negotiations were launched last year towards creating a free trade zone known as AANZFTA which would embrace ASEAN, Australia and New Zealand.

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has said that economic unity would increase two-way trade between Australia and ASEAN members that already stood at $US41 billion in 2005.

Australia has made a concerted effort to forge closer ties within ASEAN in recent years, last year dropping its opposition to signing the grouping’s non-aggression pact in return for a seat at the inaugural East Asia Summit.

The US has not signed the pact.

How much more pathetic could MIDGET get?…

No less than the person she tasks to head the commission is very hesitant to accept the post… Kiss of Death?…

Also, Bishop Gregorio who might be one of the Bishops MIDGET was able to bribe but whom I think was given a reprimand by no less than the CBCP to ‘think twice’ in accepting being a member of the commission…

Napansin nyo ba si MIDGET and her DOGS?.. They are not on the offensive, rather they are on the defensive end… as if dapat lahat ng naga-alburoto eh i-pacify NILA, or else… The Generals, the LIMATIC Congressmen, The Mayors, the Cabinet Members, the rich, the poor, the Left, the Right, the Media, CHAVIT SINGSON, JOC-JOC BOLANTE, GARCILLANO, etc… Lahat na nanghihingi ng favor and dapat lahat PABIGYAN, kasi kung hindi mas mauuna pang pumutok ang baho ni MIDGET and her DOGS kesa sa Bulkan Mayon!

    IE patch carries security bug
Microsoft’s most recent security update for Internet Explorer introduces a serious security flaw on some Windows systems.

    By Joris Evers
    Staff Writer, CNET News.com

There’s more trouble with Microsoft’s latest Internet Explorer patch: It introduces a serious new security flaw on some Windows systems.

The vulnerability could let miscreants hijack a Windows PC running IE 6 with Service Pack 1 and the MS06-042 update installed, Microsoft said in a security advisory published on Tuesday. The flaw lies in the way IE handles long Web addresses and could be exploited by luring users to specially crafted Web sites, according to the advisory.

“An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could remotely take complete control of an affected system,” Microsoft said in its advisory. “We are not aware of attacks that try to use the reported vulnerability.”

Microsoft released the MS06-042 security update on Aug. 8 as part of its monthly patch cycle. The update, deemed “critical” by Microsoft, addresses eight flaws in the ubiquitous browser. It is one of a dozen security updates that Microsoft released this month on Patch Tuesday.

The company planned to release a new version of the MS06-042 update on Tuesday to fix a problem with browser crashes reported by some users after installing the original fix. That crash, it turns out, is the result of a “buffer overrun” flaw introduced by the security update, Microsoft said. The flaw could be exploited by cyberattackers.

Further compounding the troubles with the IE patch, Microsoft postponed the release of the updated fix at the eleventh hour because of an undisclosed problem discovered during testing, Stephen Toulouse, a Microsoft Security Response program manager, wrote on a corporate blog Tuesday.

“Providing the update in its current state would have resulted in customers being unable to deploy the update,” Toulouse wrote, adding that the issue was discovered late Monday night.

As a result, users of IE 6.0 with SP1 are vulnerable to cyberattack regardless of their patching status. Microsoft advises users to install the patch and to disable the use of Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) version 1.1 in the browser.

The security issue does not impact other versions of IE, such as the version in Windows XP with SP2 or on Windows Server 2003, Microsoft said.

This is not the only patch Microsoft issued this month that is causing trouble. On Thursday, the company released a “hotfix” for a fault in security patch MS06-040. The fix addresses the problem of programs failing if they request one gigabyte or more of information on a patched system.

An update to the MS06-042 update is still in the works, but Microsoft could not say when it would be ready.

Yes, Dirk Pitt, let’s BOYCOTT PETRON!!!

  14. Nelbar:

I’m amazed at how many Filipinos especially in the Philippine Tongress would still want to give the cheat a chance. Dito iyan matagal na iyang nasipa o nakalibing na, not that we have the same system being implemented by the Malacanang tenants to get rid of their enemies and critics, but that people here have more sense of delikadeza that when exposed as when the cheating done by Garci and Gloria through the Garci tapes was made known to the public, they either jump from tall buildings, hang themselves by hotel bathroom curtain rail, or the more messy seppuku, otherwise known as harakiri, and/or submit himself/herself to the authorities.

Alas, in the Philippines, we see the pakapalan ng mukha, and the nerve of the Fat Guy, et al to threaten their critics with law suits, etc. and worse death by some paid hitmen, most probably one of the Macabebens known in Philippine history as having no scruples and loyalty and deserving of the unpalatable nomenclature, “dugong aso”!

In short, huwag ka nang magtaka! Wala nang pag-asa!

  15. Speaking of the oil spill at Guimaras, the same place where whole village was dumped recently by a mountain that one cannot help wondering why the natives there have to go through another trial and tribulation.

Now, the Philippines is one country that has calamity not just once but many a year, but look at how ill-prepared the country is that it has now sent SOS to countries like Japan, etc. that has learned to be more equipped because of past experiences in dealing with the force of nature and men.

Now, where is the prosperity that the Pandak has been harping about the manipulated falling down of the peso rate that she fools everybody to be the gauge of the success of her “successful daw” economic policy?

Now, the question is, how long do Filipinos have to allow this crook to continue pulling everybody’s legs while she, her husband, kin, friends and cronies run the treasury dry?

    Kawawang Pilipinas!

  16. Who is Gloria kidding creating all those BS commissions? The Mad Man at the Justice Department has declared all critics of the Pandak in the media as leftists and commies ready to be shot at by paid policemen and military men. The Pandak cannot wash her hands in this affair. She was the one who gave the order for the police and the military to shoot to kill any leftist or commie who crosses her. Puede ba, tigilan na niya ang arte niya unless of course, this Pandak is now nearing senility, and cannot remember what she says a while ago, and say another thing about a minute or two. Please, PATALSIKIN NA, NOW NA! 😡

  17. Nelbar,

A lot many of the bloggers have experienced one way or another being blotted off from this blog. Same story at other blogs run by the world press that is apparently vulnerable to hacking by the Internet Brigade of the Pandak. May communication center ang mga iyan sa Cebu, you know.

  18. bayonic bayonic

    yes , BOYCOTT PETRON !!!

they have billions and billions of profit every year and yet they won’t claim responsibility for the Guimaras oil spill ???

and what may I ask has happened to the plan to move the Oil depots away from Pandacan ???

  20. In 1994, i bought some Petron stocks. kunti lang naman. I already forgot for how much. all i know now is, they are worthless. If i bought it for 10.00 per share. ngayon .05 na lang yata ang per share. Example lang ang numbers. Just to show you that the company is palpak.

  21. I am told that the military has even adopted the tactic of marking the homes of those they want killed. And nobody is arrested for it especially when those conducting the round-up, killing, etc. are soldiers being paid with taxpayers’ money!!! Kaya siguro maraming maligno sa Pilipinas, actually ghosts of people who are seeking redress and justice for their death even after life.

  22. artsee artsee

  23. nelbar nelbar

Yes Ellen, that was 1994 and it was only at 9 pesos per share with individual investor could buy only at 500 shares. That was Petron’s Initial Public Offering.

Nagtataka nga ako nuon kung bakit iyong iba ay nakabili ng mas marami pa as ‘thousand in shares'(divisible by 500).

Ngayon ang Petron shares ay trading at 3.9 per share with a minumum(board lot) 1000 shares investment.

1]. Catholic Bishops [dahil they are on the take: envelopes, please!]

  26. You are right nelbar. I regret that I did not unload it during the IPO like what many others, who were smarter, did. No, what I’m holding is a useless paper.

  27. Statement of Judy Ann Miranda

    Partido ng Manggagawa

On the day that the House majority was killing the impeachment complaint against GMA for cheating, lying and stealing, she was again lying to the people on the fantastic benefits of a national ID.

She was again in her enchanted kingdom while promoting the advantages of a single ID instead of many that makes for a bulging wallet. Workers do not mind a bulging wallet if it is full of added money from a P125 wage increase.

A national or unified ID will not lead to better services for the workers and the poor since the real problem is not the lack of a single ID but the lack of budget for social services. Instead a unified ID in the hands of GMA, Bert Gonzales and Gen. Palparan will facilitate the building of a unified machinery for state terror.

Apparently they are not contended with the Spanish-era cedula and instead need a unified ID with biometrics to facilitate their “sona” and hamletting operations not just in the countryside but also in the cities. With a national ID they can terrorize not just the peasants and poor of Nueva Ecija and Bulacan but any Juan de la Cruz anywhere in the country.

As long as the government has fascist tendencies and does not respect human rights then the workers will oppose a national ID that will not be used to deliver services but be abused in assailing civil liberties.

INC tipped balance for GMA, says solon

PRESIDENT GLORIA MACAPAGAL-ARROYO might have implored divine intervention in the most serious political crisis of her four-year administration but it was the hand of the influential Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) that ensured that the impeachment process would be decided in her favor, administration officials said yesterday.

Albay Representative Joey Salceda said the INC tipped the balance in favor of the President when the religious sect decided to flex its muscles and called on members of the House of Representatives whom its flock helped get elected in 2004.

“The Iglesia came in at a crucial moment last week by putting the brakes on the signature campaign (by the pro-impeachment camp) just when it was starting to snowball,” Salceda said.

The President’s economic adviser noted that the common denominator among those who were absent or those who abstained from the voting was their debt of gratitude to the INC., said Salceda in reference to the crucial role played by the sect in Ms Arroyo’s victory over the king of Philippine movies, Fernando Poe Jr., in the 2004 elections.

    Tears of joy

A Malacañang source confirmed the INC’s role in holding the fort for the President, who was grateful for the religious sect’s support.

“The President was brought close to joyous tears when she learned that it was Ka Erdie Manalo (INC’s spiritual leader) who was calling the lawmakers one by one,” the source said.

Salceda said that the INC was a prime believer in the status quo and that this was not an opportune time to be rocking the boat in the face of the crises facing the country.

But while the INC proved to be the President’s trump card, Salceda said the opposition should not look beyond itself for losing the impeachment battle because of their “big-ticket blunders.”

I don’t know if there’s something wrong with my thinking or how I view the continuous killings out there. It seems to me that a parallel exists between the tactics of the military on one hand and the fat guy and company on the other. The military in its extra-judicial activities operates outside the law, while the fat guy, in filing cases against those deemed to be political foes operates within the law. Their operations though differ in the executions, the military through violent means, and the fat guy (if you consider it as peaceful) uses threat, intimidations, and the courts who are just willing to be used as his props, have just one goal in common. That is to instill and strike fear in the hearts of the masses.
Heart is the core of all activity in human life. Heart almost always overrides the will of people’s mind. Heart always wins over. But these people who are running this corrupt government are heartless. They have no feelings of love and compassion, only contempt and hatred, and hatred is evil. With their sowing of fear, people now feared to join mass actions, soldiers also feared to make their moves thinking that they might only end up in cells.
Fear has taken far too much already among the masses, and while it may not kill, fear can cripple the spirit, the quality of life, and leave people stuck behind meekly watching the Philippines go by. And once fear takes over the country, the monsters at the monster’s palace and their minions will be in cloud nine. They’ve won. The only consolation left is to just entertain a wishful thinking that thunder and lightning strike at the monster’s palace and turn everything inside into ashes. Then there will nothing to fear.

The Pandak and her minions should not be too sure, though. As the old adage say, “He who lives by the sword, die by the sword.” Or in the Saviour’s words, “Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.” (Matt 26:52)
