Public can’t accept PNP closure of Ramento killing

Police authorities said with the arrest of four suspects in the murder of Bishop Alberto Ramento of the Philippine Independent Church, the case is considered solved. Click here for Malaya story.

Ramento’s killing was a “plain and simple case of robbery with homicide, and not extrajudicial killing” as militant groups have alleged, said PNP chief Oscar Calderon.

But many find that difficult to accept.

The Most Reverend Godofredo J. David of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente had said in a statement, “There are glaring indications that Bishop Ramento’s murder was thoroughly planned and politically motivated. We believe that the brutal killing was the inevitable consequence of his principled engagement with the people and their struggle for the fullness of life.”

The Promotion of Church Peoples’ Response (PCPR), mande up of bishops, priests, religious sisters, pastors, deacons and deaconess, seminarians, religious and lay workers in the church and church-based and church-related institutions, programs and services, called for an “immediate, thorough and impartial investigation” after condemning the police’s immediate conclusion that the prelate was a victim of robbery with homicide.

“PCPR believes that the case was politically motivated in nature as prior to the killing incident; Bishop Ramento had complained about receiving death threats and his inclusion in the military’s order of battle,” said the group in a statement.

The Citizens Congress for Truth and Accountability headed by former Vice President Teofisto Guingona has expressed serious concern “over the haste with which police dismiss the killing of Bishop Ramento as an ordinary case of robbery with homicide and not a case of political killing.

Guingona said “this may result in allowing the real perpetrators to escape investigation and prosecution. CHR participation in the investigation may help ensure that all possible angles and evidence will be considered and the real perpetrators prosecuted.”

The Counsels for the Defense of Liberties (Codal) urges the police not to hastily conclude that the killing was an ordinary case of robbery as it may mislead investigators and cause the real criminals to escape investigation.

Codal stressed that Bishop Ramento was an outspoken critic of Pres. Arroyo and has been an active member of the Presidium of the CCTA. “He voted to find Pres. Arroyo culpable for graft and corruption, electoral fraud and human rights violations in the CCTA verdict,” Codal noted.

The Cordillera Human Rights Alliance (CHRA) said Ramento was killed “to silence a man of truth and a staunch advocate of peace, justice and human rights.”

“We share in the grief of his family, friends and his church. We find the statements of the Philippine National Police that say his murder was simply in relation to the robbery of the church unacceptable,” said Beverly Longid, CHRA vice chairman.

Ask any professional hitman and he will tell you that all ambushes are made to look like robberies or holdups in order to throw investigators off his tracks.

Haven’t you noticed, most unsolved killings lately were perpetrated by men who carried them out with military precision, and take note, while on the way or back from the bank. Not even the hardest criminals just shoot anybody to get their money.

The reason being given that the Bishop’s slay had robbery as the ulterior motive and the police imediately declaring the case solved creates more doubts than it settles.

  2. vic vic

If Gloria is sincere in her resolve to stop the Killings, political or otherwise, she shoould order the dismissal of PNP chief for hastily concluding the case as “Plain and Simple Case of Robbery with Homicide” as if taking a human life is just a simple ‘Case’. In a country Ripe with political murders, every case should be treated as one, especially if the victim was involved in civic duties, and until a very thorough, conclusive evidence indicate otherwise it is better for the Authorities to refrain from Premature announcement. Make them look foolish and stupid and aggravate the suspicions all over that the killings are indeed Political.

  3. Ellen,

I made comments on this in another loop, and I cannot help sympathizing with those people being framed up to admit to something they have not done, or if they have, they must have been hired by the very same people who are now accusing them.

This is not actually a new story but something that has made the Philippine police look really despicable, corrupt and incompetent. The lack of respect for authority in fact is a reflection of the lack of respect the Filipinos have for their policemen.

It is disgusting for these policemen to be showing the faces of these suspects on TV for instance just for the pogi points even before they can firmly establish evidences against them. What they do not realize is that showing off these suspects do not make them heroes but the asslickers that the criminal suspect calling herself “President of the Philippines” makes of them!!!

For one thing, nobody is buying this police claim that this case is closed. For one thing, I understand that Bishop Ramento was a very powerful critic of the bogus president and like the many who have criticized the crook and her minions, he was marked for either libel suit or be buried 6 feet underground.

PATALSIKIN NA, NOW NA! STOP HUMAN TRAFFICKING! STOP THE TRAFFICKING OF HUMAN ORGANS FROM THE PHILIPPINES!

  4. Read somewhere that the good Bishop was living a modest life.
    Tas, ROBBERY with homecide?
    Who’s gonna believe that crap?

  5. ‘Case closed’ means in THEIR parlance….na-salvage na!

HOW MUCH MORE CAN THE PILIPINOS TAKE of this??? Do we just accept that we are being lead by a “Terrorist” in Malacanan? She’s only 4’9″, what’s so difficult in ejecting this woman?

  7. Yuko shares this letter to Amb. Domingo Siazon from the National Christian Council in Japan:

    October 4, 2006
    Ambassador Domingo L. Siazon
    Philippine Embassy

    Dear Ambassador Siazon,
We are grieving and in state of shock upon learning that Bishop Alberto Ramento, the Chairperson of the Supreme Council of Bishop of the Philippine Independent Church, was stabbed to death yesterday morning with initial report that it is a case of robbery with homicide. It is knowledge that Bishop Ramento had been receiving death threats due to his advocacy that is critical to the Arroyo government’s policies.
To mention some is in his June 12, 2006 Interfaith Rally against Charter Change, Bishop Ramento again took to the stage in Liwasang Bonifacio to denounce the administration’s moves to revise the constitution. During his speech, he proudly announced that during its deliberations, the leadership of the Philippine Independent Church was unanimous in its opposition to charter change. This announcement drew applause from the audience and leaders of other churches and faiths present at the rally.
The Aglipayan Bishop was active in human rights and civil liberties issues, being a founding convenor of the Movement of Concerned Citizens for Civil Liberties (MCCCL). He spoke out against the spate of extrajudicial killings under the Arroyo administration that like him the progressive church leaders and workers have been among the targets of political assassination in the provinces.
While the Philippine National Police quickly suggest robbery as the motive of the killing, we cannot be content knowing that he is an outspoken critic of extrajudicial killings and other human rights violations under the Arroyo government.
Bishop Ramento has dedicated his entire life solely for the poor and the oppressed just like when he stood by striking workers of Hacienda Luisita. He has been a staunch peace advocate and human rights defender that dated back from the martial law years of former President Marcos.
As we join all peace-loving people of the Philippines in praying for Bp. Ramento and

other victims of human rights violations in the Philippines, let it be known that we are calling on the government of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to make a quick and thorough investigation of the murder so that justice may be served.
Therefore, we are asking your office to convey our demand in the strongest term to the Philippine government to give an impartial investigation to the death of Bishop Ramento.
    Respectfully yours,

    Rev. John Yuji Kanzaki
    Rev. Toshi Yamamoto
    Chair, Philippines Committee,
    General Secretary,
    National Christian Council in Japan

Malaking issue ito worldwide kasi member the Council of Churches Worldwide ang Aglipayan Church.

    To: anna-de-brux
    Sent: Friday, October 06, 2006 4:17 PM
Subject: Re: This is what I personally received.

    anna:

although i was not blessed to have met the bishop in life, in his death i have come to know him.

archbishop cruz of lingayen has high praises for him as a man of God and of the poor.

coming from a catholic archbishop who also has great credibility, that was great tribute to the man.

i have added my humble words to prod the law enforcement agencies to look for, arrest and punish the perpetrators of the unspeakable deed that cries to the heavens for justice.

i do not think that they should just dismiss the murder of the bishop as the afterthought of a robbery. the people in the area knew him and as the pastor of the poor, there was nothing to rob him of – except, indeed, his life.

everyone knows what terrible government leaders we have. but we also have great people like bishop ramento who will in the end make the difference for the better for all of us.

I ask the Lord God to bless him.

  14. Yuko,

Jun is being the true heir to Gloria punggok and her fatso husband who’s become baboy with all the nakaws that he’s made…Let’s ignore him. His is the rant of one who is simple minded – nothing he can do about that. He probably was born that way.

  15. Vic’s comment is spot on:

“In a country Ripe with political murders, every case should be treated as one, especially if the victim was involved in civic duties, and until a very thorough, conclusive evidence indicate otherwise it is better for the Authorities to refrain from Premature announcement.”

  16. Mrivera Mrivera

anna, i disagree. simple minded? maybe not. mabuti pa nga sa kanya ang fungus, mas pinakikinabangan ng marami dahil nagagamit sa science pero siya, ang gumagamit yung parasites in the society.

    Hahahahahah!

  18. Mrivera Mrivera

losers are those who are trying to cover up their inability to do what is expected from them and pass the blame by harming those critical of their ineffectiveness and lapses.

  19. Elvira Sahara Elvira Sahara

Right ka diyan Mrevira! Losers are like this “Jun” kuno who’s only job is to contradict the opinions of those who are against her employer. It won’t take anylonger, iho, then you’ll define to us the meaning of Losers, dahil ikaw at ang Ama mong sa Malakanyang ‘yon! Sabad-sabad ka lang, gago!

  20. Anna,

I don’t read this guy/gal as a matter of fact. I just follow the leads of others I know are not asslickers of the Bansot, who may be just one or two posting in various aliases, one of them must be the daughter, who is often in the Malaya forum blogging in various email addies and ID’s.

Over there, I have easier way of tracing the source(s) with the help of some net investigators who are looking exactly for materials for their study on how to make the Internet Law here work properly.

I’m actually not deceived regarding the identity of this bogey trying hard to mess up the discussion in this blog. But no dice, we are here to stay, right, friend, until the Bansot is safely placed in a cubicle at the Maximum Security at the Muntinlupa Penitentiary?!!! 😛

  21. Correct me if I am wrong but the information that I got is that the slain Aglipayan bishop is not the first, but the third or fourth from his church based in Tarlac. Now, another one is also getting a threat and all aimed I believe at being blamed on the owner of the Luisita Hacienda just because she is no longer a staunch supporter of the Bansot, the genuine “Dugong Aso.”

The slain bishop is very political so who will believe the crap that his death is a simple case of robbery resulting in murder?

For one thing, the members of the National Council of Churches in Japan are not buying the crap about the death of the bishop being called a robbery with murder. The bishop was threatened before his death because he is very critical of the Bansot and wants her to step down. Therefore, she has the greatest motive to get rid of the bishop! It’s as simple as that. It’s common sense!

I can’t say much about Pimentel, nevertheless it’s like pot calling kettle black. I took exception for your lacking a sense of responsibility on the statement you’ve made toward a person with whom we’ve great admiraton. Ellen has been of what I believe are doing more to the betterment of the country in bringing about truths and justice to public and her readers, more than I can say of illegitimate Gloria. First and foremost you should kiss the ground of a great Pilipina Ms. Ellen and be grateful for providing you a blog where you can air your dissatisfaction without fear or even shot by drive-by mask killers. I hope you can appreciate Ms. Ellen generosity. You stated, “pangiitriga abante style courtesy of corrupt and irresponsible writer like you, ellen.” What you said was far from the truth, it’s pure hate on your part withtout foundation. You calling Ms Ellen corrupt and irresponsible are unimaginable, callous and it could only came from the game-book of fake Gloria. How can you justified corrupt and irresponsible? You can’t, because it’s all about lies and to mis-inform the readers. Does is it have some familiarity of Malacanang patented spin of false propaganda? You bet!

Re: Public can’t accept PNP closure of Ramento killing

WHY? The Philippine National Police under the leadership of Jose Pidal’s cousin PNP chief Oscar Calderon have zero credibility. He promised to stop jueteng nationwide in 30 days and just a hot air after all. Task Force Usig is selling the idea that militants and journalists were killed by the communists. The arrest of the robbery-murder suspects does not mean case is closed. Are they fall guys? How about the death threat angle? The general public has lost trust and confidence to the police under bogus Arroyo regime. There’s a perception that PNP is the protector of Gloria and Jose Pidal crime family. Pulis Ni Pidal (PNP)?????

i will try to be kind to jun by asking him to explain how he came to the conclusion that ellen is corrupt and irresponsible.

  32. According to an Inquirer report, 5 more Aglipay priests fear that their lives are in danger.

All five are vocal critics of Gloria’s inept government.

The threat to their lives alone constitutes a serious violation of moral decency.

Gloria would do well to accept that she has lost all morality to even “fakely” govern this nation.

First step is for her to step down and to call for elections. She will not do it but all people who have lost all sense of morality believe that they’ve nothing else to lose if they’ve lost everything by way of decency.

And good people in the Philippines still support her?

  33. This is the first and last I will say about comments saying I’m corrupt. Honesty is my credo in life. And that I use in my writings.

I ignore all those allegations of corruptions because they are untrue.

  34. npongco npongco

It’s absolutely unfair to call Ellen corrupt. Whoever said that should be shot by firing squad. Even though I don’t totally agree with Ellen’s moderating style in this blog, I know her to be a person of unquestionable integrity. She’s one of the most honest journalists in the county.

  35. Jun Jun

(Kung talagang di totoo, but I am sure of what I am saying. Another Aglipayan priest killed in Surigao del Sur. Is this just a coincidence? What’s happening? It seems that there’s a pattern of both killings. Death squads are roaming freely and kill their prey in a precision manner without a trace.

Another priest of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI) or the Aglipayan Church was killed in Surigao del Sur Monday, a week after the murder of Aglipayan bishop Rev. Alberto Ramento.

Initial reports from ABS-CBN Regional Network Group said three suspects stabbed and shot dead Dionisio Ging-ging, 53, in Barangay Bajao, Tago, Surigao del Sur. Operatives of the police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group are investigating the incident.10/8/06 ABS-CBN

  40. Diego,

I heard about that… has the report been confirmed?

Ellen, I don’t understand why you allow such nasty comments by this Jun to be posted here given the fact that sometimes you delete our (my) negative comments about some personalities. I hope you would be a little consistent. And that not only disciplining this bastard Jun; but also your best friend Queen of the Blog who keeps directly or indirectly attacking me.

Mrivera, you can use a toy gun. A fake gun works as well as a real gun just like Jun’s boss in the Palace who despite being a fake leader is operating like a true one; that is, sucking people’s blood and money.

  47. kitamokitako kitamokitako

I just want to express my piece. I have long been a reader of Ellen’s columns even before i became aware of this blog. I found her consistent in all her stand in any issue. I used to have 3 favs, her, Banayo & Paredes. If ever she had been dishonest, probably, any reader can sense it. I have never doubted her, otherwise, i would not even join here.

It is easy to sense when a journalist is ‘envelop’mental, by using commonsense. I have long concluded that Common Sense is not what Jun has.

    Cheers for Ellen!

Ang galing pang mag-frame up.

I am sorry to hear if indeed Ellen is undergoing a chemotherapy. Hindi ito personalan. Sometimes it helps when you stop harboring negative comments to other especially kung wala ka namang pruweba. Politics in the Phils is not healthy. I advised Ellen to spare herself from this kung gusto mong gumaling ng mabilisan.

  52. npongco npongco

Are you really undergoing chemo, Ellen? Sorry to hear about that. I will pray for you. I humbly suggest that you temporarily discontinue moderating this blog for the debates here are getting worse each day. It’s even getting out of control. Why not designate someone to replace you in the meantime? What about Ystakei? And she can get Anna as her co-moderator.

  53. Noel,

I nominate YOU as co-moderator in case Ellen decides have the blog under moderation temporarily.

And I second my motion! Finished!

Those who vote “aye”, raise your hands! (Anna raises hand…)

OK, the vote is closed! SO BE IT!

NOEL PONGCO (npongco) is nominated and elected to be YUKO’s co-moderator if Ellen decides to have the blog moderated by commenters here in the future.

  54. “Politics in the Phils is not healthy.” This is the most sensible thing I’ve read by Jun.

  55. npongco npongco

Why not? But not co-moderator. I’m a man so should be the leader. I don’t allow a woman especially in the caliber of this comadre of yours to dominate/overpower me. How was the voting? I didn’t see any hand raised…

    Motion of Confidence

A Motion of Confidence is a motion of support proposed by a government in a parliament or other assembly of elected representatives to give members of parliament (or other such assembly) a chance to register their confidence in a government. The motion is passed or rejected by means of a parliamentary vote (a Vote of Confidence). Governments often propose a Motion of Confidence to replace a Motion of No Confidence proposed by the opposition.

Defeat of a Motion of Confidence in a parliamentary democracy generally requires one of two actions:

    1. the resignation of the government, or
    2. a request for a parliamentary dissolution and the calling of a General Election.

Am curious because I know very, very little about INC so please tell me, is that an INC (Iglesia ni Cristo) doctrine?

  60. npongco npongco

It’s not only an INC doctrine, but so does the Mormons and most churches. The Bible clearly teaches that the man should be the head of the household. Christ is the Head of the Church. But for this Queen of the Blog and her Princess, that may not be true. They sure will cry out loud in protest. Aren’t they behaving like amazons in this blog?

Woman tops list of China’s richest for first time -—Reuters(Yahoo!® News)

SHANGHAI (Reuters) – A woman has topped a list of China’s richest people for the first time, elbowing past two-time leader Huang Guangyu of GOME Electrical Appliances and a coterie of CEOs at old-economy government enterprises.

Newly minted billionaire Cheung Yan -— the 49 year-old founder and chairwoman of top Chinese paper packager Nine Dragons Paper (Holdings) Ltd. -— saw her fortune balloon nine-fold to US$3.4 billion boosted by her firm’s March initial public offering.

The entrepreneur, who controlled 72 percent of Nine Dragons as of August 31, has lapped up a 165 percent rally in the company’s stock, according to an annual survey compiled by Rupert Hoogewerf, who pioneered a list for Forbes.

Cheung’s stellar ascent is rare in a Communist country whose largest corporations are state-owned or run by well-connected male executives, and where “capitalism” is still a bad word in some circles.

Decades after Mao Zedong famously remarked that women “hold up half the sky,” no female has yet made it onto the country’s all-powerful Politburo Standing Committee -— although Vice Premier Wu Yi is on the 24-member Politburo -— and academics continue to point out the inadequacy of women’s rights.

“China’s women are becoming more visible in business,” said Hoogewerf, who has published the list since 1999.

“Traditionally women have always been on the inside and men have been on the outside. It hasn’t been until the economic reforms that women have actually started to make inroads into the public arena.”

Cheung, born in northeastern China’s Heilongjiang province and now a Los Angeles native, began building her fortune in 1985, when she set up a waste-paper trading business in Hong Kong.

She later became the top exporter of scrap paper by volume in the United States, processing the paper in China to make containerboard.

Her personal wealth leapt from $375 million last year, when she was logged as number 36 in the survey, surpassing appliances king Huang’s $2.5 billion, according to the report.

Huang, chairman of GOME -— the country’s top retailer of household electronics -— had topped the list in 2005 for the second consecutive year, with a fortune of $1.7 billion.

The man who started his career with $500 and a Beijing roadside stall hawking radios and gadgets built GOME into a multi-billion dollar empire spanning nearly 100 cities across the country.

The number of Chinese billionaires on the Hurun list increased to 13, from seven last year and just three in 2004.

The rise in the number of China’s super-rich comes amid a widening gulf between rich and poor that analysts say threatens social stability even as the economy booms.

Chinese President Hu Jintao in July called for stronger efforts to tackle the wealth gap, saying salaries should be market-oriented but that the country must focus on fairness.

The 500 richest Chinese in the Hurun report are now worth an average of US$276 million, a 48 percent rise over the previous year, controlling a total US$138 billion in assets.

INC iyan, Anna. Iglesia Npongco Church.

Mrs. Gloria Pidal.

  64. Artsee,

Thanks for the info pero sa palagay ko Catholic si npongco at hindi INC (Iglesia ni Cristo) based on his other posts (but I could be wrong).

Anyway, para sa akin, pareho lang ang mga religion, ang importante ay belief in God or that there is just one God.

  65. npongco npongco

No I’m not, Anna. I’m not an INC member and will never be. INC is among the most popular cults we have today. The others are Jehova’s, Mormons, Moonies…I was born and raised as a Catholic. But quite honestly, I’ve long doubted this religion. I began to get cold in my Catholic faith when Cardinal Sin and these priests started politicking. They were very instrumental in the ouster of two duly elected Presidents of our Republic, Marcos and Erap. I asked myself: How could I belong in a church and religion where these leaders don’t practice what they preach. I said to myself: I don’t want to be a part of this hypocrisy. Now, I believe that religion and church are there just to control the people. Such groups create fear and always talk about the unknown. Scare tactics are being applied. Constant brainwashing and money making schemes just to fatten the pockets of these people running these groups. In the end, it’s all about faith and your personal relationship to the creator up there.
