Gall, not goal

(Pictures of the incident below)

Renato Constantino, Jr. (RC) would like to correct the published statement he said to House Speaker Jose de Venecia and 24 other congressmen during an emotionally-charged press conference at the Dusit Hotel last Friday. He said, it’s “collective gall” and not “collective goal.”

The complete sentence which jolted JDV and his friends:“I would like to say to you all (that) I am completely appalled by your collective gall. You’re totally bereft of principle that’s why you’re without shame.”

We all know what happened after that. Philippine Star columnist Carmen Pedrosa stood up and shouted at RC that he didn’t belong to the event because it was only for members of media. Vic Agustin, columnist of Philippine Daily Inquirer, threw a glass of water on RC.

Later Agustin said RC needed “a douse of cold water.’

There’s a text joke going around:

Flash report!

Cherie Gil just gave Vic Agustin a “douse of cold water” saying, “You’re nothing but a second- rate trying-hard copy cat!”

For those who are not familiar with the movie, “Bituin na Walang Ningning”, there was that famous confrontation scene between the fading star Cherie Gil and a rising star, Sharon Cuneta. Cherie threw a glass of water on Sharon saying, “You’re nothing but a second- rate trying-hard copy cat!”

Some pictures I took of that incident:

  1. From Rep. Roilo Golez:

WE ARE A NATION IN EXTREMIS

The political situation today is what is called in the Navy as “in extremis” which means collision, i.e., steel shredding collision is imminent and unavoidable.

The Malacañang-driven majority have only themselves to blame. Using pompous words, scandalously flawed arguments and brazen, arrogant and shameless use of numbers, they rammed first the illegal amendment of the House Rules, then their unconstitutional Resolution 1540 down the people’s throat throat under cover of darkness (they thought no one was looking). Now they backtrack and offer Con-Con.

But it’s too late for that. The fight of the House minority has now been taken over by the real majority, the majority of the people. The forces are now about to collide. Matira ang Matibay.

  2. Hi Ellen.

PDI has a news article on the incident. And Philstar.com has a very funny photo of Pedrosa in the background looking like she was screaming her lungs out on its splash page.

Ironically, in light of all that has been happening, Philstar has this news article from their Washington bureau saying that President Bush lauded the Philippines as a “shining example of democracy.” At least, according to RP Ambassador to the US Willy Gaa.

  3. I should see that Philstar photo. Pedrosa was really hysterical last Friday. At least Belinda Cunanan, who was there with husband Thelmo, director of SSS, was taking it calmly. So was Gina de Venecia.

Ang galing talaga ni RC. When I arrived at Dusit, RC was already seated in front with a lady companion, in the section reserved for JDV’s supporters.

Nakakatawa kasi when RC started berating the congressmen, we all went in front of him. So, sa likod na namin sina JDV and his gang.Natabunan sila.

On the personal side, they served sandwiches. Since I did not have breakfast,I was starting to eat the sandwich when RC stood up and spoke his piece. Kamuntik lang ako mabulunan. Tayo kaagad ako to be in front of him. Nawala na ang sandwich after the presscon.

  4. Statement of the Movement for Free Philippines
    Dec 9, 2006

There is a time for everything under heaven.

It is time to stop the extrajudicial killings.

It is time to defend the Constitution against the
relentless assault of sectors out to defraud and
    hoodwink the entire nation .

It is time to stop the lies on top of lies to the
    Filipino people.

It is time to cleanse the COMELEC so we can have CLEAN
    ELECTIONS.

It is time to end the degradation of public trust and
accountability in our national political life.

It is time to end the creep of pronouncements,
intentions, and actions towards a renegade undeclared
    dictatorship in the land.

We stand for human rights thus we cannot condone
    extrajudicial killings.

We stand for the Rule of Law and hence we condemn the
vicious and treasonous attacks on the Constitution.

We are for the TRUTH and thus cannot accept the
continuous stream of falsehoods and the spin of lies
from officialdom who believes that they can fool the
    people all of the time.

We stand for true public choice in questions of
leadership and legitimacy and we cannot tolerate a
COMELEC that subverts the people’s sovereign will.

We stand for FREEDOM and hence we cannot countenance
any support, witting or unwitting, for a renegade
government bent on imposing its ‘diktat’ over the
    land.

The Movement for a Free Philippines has always fought
for FREEDOM and DEMOCRACY. We stood at the forefront
of the struggle against an officially declared
dictatorship in the past. We cannot stand idly by
while an undeclared dictatorship usurps the democratic
space which we have fought so hard to regain.

With the resounding voices of the clergy, the militant
advocates, the enlightened military, and the concerned
common tao raised in PROTEST, the enemies of FREEDOM
in our land are blinking. The usurpers of our
Sovereign Will should now tread softly for their
nefarious activities have been exposed in the light of
day. Nevertheless, let this not be the time to lower
our guard. Let all good men and women of the Filipino
nation stand up and be counted in this continuing
mission to serve what is best for our people and
country. Let us move forward with deliberation and
fortitude and by the grace of God Almighty , ‘WE SHALL
    OVERCOME’.

Time for someone who had the guts such as RC to stand and be counted!

Nakakatawa naman ang perdosa na yan….Saw her philstar. photo: that screaming stint in vivid colors! Nakakalaglag-bituka siguro ang tili…I can just imagine! Ha-ha!

If we only have more people like RC we would not be in this pit we are in. Kudos RC! You woke up some of our sleeping
comrades. Emotions are high right now. Let us not let our guards down. Let us be vigilant.

Ellen, just read in the news update that Tiyanak did not cool off the con-ass. THEREFORE, LET US CONTINUE OUR PROTESTS!

  7. Ellen:
I agree with every word of the statement made by the Movement of Free Philippines.
I have two things to say about the loud mouth of Carmen Pedrosa (1) was she sober? if not what was she on! (2) suppose it could be worse guys; because you could be married to her!
I like the vast majority, agree and admire Renalto Constantino Jr. on his stand in front of JDV and his group of nodding dogs. What a good man this RC is, well done.

Only good words and admiration for Mr. RC. It is during times like ours that heroes are born.

Throwing water, like what Vic Agustin did to Mr. RC, does not ease the pressure off or calm people down. It ENRAGES them even more.

What may happen is that everything will move forward. Like what a friend told me earlier, the “schedule” has been moved up.

To Gloria, JdV and the CONASSes: LIKE IT OR NOT, HERE WE COME!

    Nightmares galore for Gloria

    EDITORIAL

    12/10/2006

Instability under the Arroyo administration was that which was bared to the world in the postponement of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit and it was not because of the weather, either.

Typhoon “Seniang” was made a convenient excuse for the resetting of the Asean Summit with Gloria entirely believing she can fool all the people every time.

This time, however, the Gloria farce assumed a comical face in trying to pull a fast one over leaders of Asian nations.

A different typhoon is brewing north as Speaker Joe de Venecia and his hacks in Congress take the final stage in ramming through Charter change (Cha-cha) through a Constituent Assembly (Con-ass).

It was apparently a safety vacuum for Gloria and the Cha-cha engineers amid a swelling public uproar against the unwanted push — as as police forces were needed to be concentrated in Cebu — that prompted the cancellation of the Summit.

The capability, or the lack of it, of the Arroyo government in maintaining order was thus, highlighted in the cancellation of the event.

Reports on a terror plot further added a dimension of panic for Gloria to push her hand in canceling a supposed Christmas Party for the Asian leaders.

Well, Gloria can just console herself with the convenient alibi if the typhoon came around.

Between now and January, however, the news focus on the summit will have shifted from the dull integration aspect to the capability of the Gloria administration to hold it.

Global attention has now been attracted to the brewing political storm threatening Gloria, something she would have intended focused on the Asean Summit.

For one, the world’s news agencies have sent reporters to cover the summit and canceling it the day before it is held would leave them with a potentially dull day.

Yet, the more hard-nosed journalists among them would smell something bigger than the summit with the abrupt cancellation.

For sure, they would not be leaving Cebu. Neither would they stay there until January to hit the beaches.

In a day or two, either the terrorist threat angle or the Cha-cha railroading and the subsequent protests it would be generating on Monday would be on the agenda of the biggest global news agencies.

It would be a good bet that a sizable number of foreign reporters assigned in Cebu would be redeployed in Manila to cover the start of JdV’s Con-ass maneuvering and the street rallies it would generate not exactly because it is a potential headline grabber, yet, but only to get anything to pay for the reporters trip to Cebu.

Gloria would then be getting the world focus that she so craves with the supposed holding of the Asean Summit.

While the Summit itself, which is essentially a yearly social gathering, would not have merited even a second page story among major news agencies, its cancellation has the potential of hitting the banner.

Such cancellations of an international commitment are just not done. No one, but no one will ever take the Gloria government seriously after this abrupt cancellation that moreover the world knows had nothing to do with the puny storm that was not even going to hit Cebu.

If the storm were indeed the real reason for the cancellation, then there was no need for this, since the summit could have been transferred to Manila instead.

Still, the Philippine government, taking Gloria’s line, claimed that Mrs. Arroyo wanted to focus all her energies on the typhoon victims, which line just doesn’t jell, since she and her aides were one in stating that Cha-cha was to be the priority, even when the victims of Typhoon “Reming” in the peninsula were waiting for relief and services from government.

But again, Gloria thought of nothing but her political survival, fearing the wrath of the people who are outraged over the House railroaded Con-ass.

And she and her congressional allies now try to dampen the fire in the people, by postponing the battle for Con-ass yet Gloria is still faced with a potential global image nightmare.

    “BAGYO!”

There are times when looking at these events, just makes us wonder what makes these people separate from the Politicians that leads them. Priding themselves the guardian of Speech Freedom, the Media personalities, like t my namesake Vic Agustin, and that Lady Pedrosa, can not even tolerate a fellow citizen vent his frustrations toward the Representatives who he believes Breach the Trust of the voters who had the courtesy to have given them the opportunity to attain such honour. I posted this entry in my site today. A few of my country men and women visit my site and hope they can symphatize with what is going on.

    How Low Can They Get?

Some Comic Events happened in some Press Conference held by the Philippines Politicians, where a Citizen who rose among the groups of Media People and said his Piece towards the Speaker of the House and his Group of Representatives, was immediately mobbed by the crowd, hustled out of the conference room, poured water by one of the country’s leading Newspaper Writers and was vilified for interrupting the “news conference”.

This was not a surprising event in the Philippines, where Politics is a Dirty Word. Where Politicians are accused of corruptions, unbridled corruptions and they are playing the Lords of the country. Majority of the 80 millions of the county’s Citizens suffering in Silence of abject poverty, not because the country is poor – it has a very rich natural resources, a well-educated young professionals and trades people that are in demand in most other parts of the world, other than their own, but because of the mismanagement, the concentration of wealth to the very few Oligarch that use the convenience of Politics to maintain and hold their interest and the wealth of Nation. And these Oligarch also known as the Ruling Class or the Elites can just about afford to pay their ways and that’s is including influencing what we have known here in this part of our world, as the guardian of the Truth and the ultimate check, the Media. Going that low, we can only hope that there is no other way to go… but up..

I am quite shocked by the behavior of Ms Pedrosa and Mr Agustin.

As journalists they should have allowed Mr Constantino, clearly a concerned citizen, to air his views in that
forum without taking side even if the said forum had been “reserved for the press.”

As journalists, whatever their affiliation, they should have known that any citizen has as much right as a journalist to
freedom of speech. It wouldn’t do democracy any good to stifle Mr Constantino’s right to dissent.

A healthy debate in the open contributes to keeping democracy alive without which it would be difficult for
any citizen to be truly free.

Ah! What a strike! RC’s vitriolic vituperation perfectly expressed the exact sentiments of the Filipino people!

I am so proud that courageous people like Renato Constantino Jr are alive and kicking asses, especially that of the Con Asses headed by de venecia and the FAKE CHIEF EXECUTIVE macapagal arroyo.

    Damn that fake regime!

  34. chi chi

that’s a good question. under this regime when we are all fired up, display of dissatisfaction will range from mere cursing to killing them all!

  35. Chabeli Chabeli

Gloria and the CON-ASSes are not giving up, are they? In the recent issue of The Daily Trubune, Gabriel Claudio was reported to have stresed in a text message that ““The President had always been firm and consistent with her support for Charter reforms and the need to shift to a unicameral parliamentary system, but she made it clear during her caucuses with the members that she would leave to Congress the methods and processes for achieving that goal,” he said.

Bunye also said Charter change remains one of the administration’s key parliament agenda that has acquired a life of its own in the national consciousness.

“This administration will pursue the high cause because it is the right thing to do for the public interest as it will do away with a degenerated system and help build a new Philippines,” the presidential spokesman said.”

BINGI NA, MATIGAS PA ANG ULO!

  36. Ellen,

Hurrah for Renato Constantino! And I totally agree with him and join Vi in her condemnation of Pedrosa and Agustin. Constantino’s action is analogous perhaps to one little step but which, in fact, is a giant leap for decent Filipino mankind.

It is actually not the unicameral system that is bad in itself but it is the despicalble collective gall of a few legislators led by de Venecia and his ilk that’s giving unicameral system a bad name because of their shameless, disgusting attempt to deprive the voting Filipino people of their right to determine the kind of system they want for their country; De Venecia’s and his ilks’ absolute disregard for the already legally established May 2007 election processus alone is already one major reason why any political effort they propose should be stymied; they have proven beyond reasonable doubt that they no longer are worthy of the slightest trust.

As I have said, the unicameral system in itself is not a bad system. It works in many European countries. But it cannot work in a country where proponents for a unicameral system are not mature enough to know the difference between a working democracy and a virtual tyrany, the former is sovereign will ultimately resides in the people while the latter resides first and foremost in a group that believes their will alone should matter.

There seems to be no democratic nation in the world today that has traded its right to a direct national vote for an “indirect” vote. But I know at least of one country where it used to be the other way around, where parliament or the assembly elected the president but the system changed, voters now elect their president by direct universal suffrage: France.

I believe that if the French REVERTED TO THE FORMER SYSTEM whereby only the members of parliament were allowed to elect a president thereby annuling the citizens’ right to elect their national leader by direct national vote, there would be a revolution in France again.

We should throw water at Gloria’s face and shout at her saying, ““You’re nothing but a second-rate, trying-hard copy cat!”” to be a President.

We should also tell her that she has 72-Hours after Monday to vacate Malacanan, or else!

And lastly, we should tell her that we “would like to say to you…(that)…” we are “…completely appalled by your collective gall. You’re totally bereft of principle that’s why you’re without shame.””

The water thrown by Vic Agustin to RC could be made to a movie entitled: “TUBIG NOON, UNOS NGAYON” or “THE GLASS OF WATER THAT CREATED THE STORM”. Calling Joel Lamangan!

And speaking of storm, I posted somewhere here that Seniang means: S-ignificant E-vents N-ow I-ntensifying, A-lis
N-a dyan, G-loring. I found out that if there’s another storm, sana naman wala na, PAGASA, in its naming scheme, will call it TOMAS.

    T-otal
    O-uster of
    M-acapagal
    A-rroyo,
    S-alamat po, Lord!

    RC says:
“I am completely appalled by your collective gall. You are totally bereft of principles, that’s why you are without shame.”

    Joeseg translation for today:
Pwe!”

Kudos to Renato constantino Jr. May we have more ‘speaking truth to power’ moments like these. This is the best antidote to a fake presidency.

  40. cvj,

second that again and again. indeed, Constantino’s truth speech is the best antidote to the radioactive political poison that this political pollonium 210 presidency wants to cotaminate the citizenry with.

MFP’s statement is a little late in coming. How long have been since glue & company started their abuse of the constitution?

Ang ginawa ni Mr. Renato Constantino ay sadyang kahanga-hanga…TAMA LANG ANG KANIYANG GINAWA…and artsee, it’s Mr. Constantino who got “the BALLS”, not those “SHAMELESS” men hiding behind their “borrowed title” as representatives of the people. I’ve seen the “scene” in TV Patrol, palakpak agad ako with muching fist pump(ala Tiger Woods whenever he makes his magnifecent putts), but my joy became anger when this “old witch” named Carmen Pedroza stood up behind Mr. Constantino and “utter her sucker words”…”you should respect our Congressman(or something in this context)”…aleng carmen na may hindi pantay na kilay at parang nasubsub sa cemboco ang mukha, iyang mga TONGRESSMAN na sinasabi mong dapat irespeto o kaya’y hindi dapat “bastusin” ay MATAGAL NANG PANAHONG GUMUGULONG SA MURA NG SAMBAYANANG PILIPINO.

  54. From RC:

    Hi Ellen

Maraming salamat uli. Pakiparating naman sa iyong mga contributors and
taos puso kong pasasalamat sa ipinamalas nilang suporta at pag-unawa sa

While I had no illusions I was speaking for anyone but myself, I am so
glad that, no matter how inadvertently, I have articulated what our
silenced people feel in their hearts.

On the other hand, if there is anything I wish my action has produced it
is this: having contributed to opening the floodgates of disgust, each
Filipino should speak up and thus exercise the power that each one of us
inherently has. A power that others have wielded for so long in our name.

To my mind, the issue is not about elections these false leaders seek to
mislead us with. It is no longer about charter change, either con-ass
or con-con. Having exposed themselves with their arrogant machinations
for self serving objectives, they have lost the right to lead.

    Warm regards

carmen pedrosa looks like a rabid dog ready to bite. wow. what devotion to the ex-future prime minister who will never win by popular vote.

i hear vic agustin has been indefinitely suspended. i say it’s about time. he is apparently known in the business community as naghihintay ng lagay. he does not check his sources and he rarely asks the other side before going to print.

he is unapologetic about what he did. he committed slander by deed and he should be taken to task for it. the inquirer shouldnt coddle a criminal like agustin and should terminate any and all connection to this aberration.

in way, ok rin yun at lumabas ang tunay na kulay ng nagpapanggap na journalist na yan.

I myself salutes him, we badly need more people like him…MABUHAY KA MANG RENATO!!! And don’t worry about those two “askals” of a journalists, especially the one that “cowardly splashed” you with the water he’s suppose to be drinking. My thought is what on earth for?

No need! All on her own, she’s shown she’s capable of doing that – she’s been grabbing more than the lion’s share of the showing of respect for Joe de Venecia and his clique… Just look at her pic in the Star, how she roarrrrrred and growled to defend her dear little rats, er cubs!

  61. chi chi

    Mrivera,

Was degenerated Bunye concious enough when he said that the charter change has acquired a life of its own in the national consciousness?

Yeah, I believe him because due to their obsession to change the charter, they repeatedly assault and gang raped the Constitution. The result; it has now come very much alive in the people’s consciousness ready to kick them out of Malacanang!

  62. Mrivera Mrivera

chi, everytime this titing bunye tries to shield gloria mukhang bato’s lapses and incapability to govern, he always seemed like hallucinating as if he is “high” or something what. it is only in gloria mukhang bato’s administration where most of the cabinet members are blindly following a leader who has no right to be where she is. a power grabber giving orders to everyone around her to do things not for the country’s benefit but for her own survival! and for them, too!

GMA has one accomplishment thus far: Dividing all sectors of society for her benefit. Divide-and-rule tactic that is. Even the media, who should be the conduit of the sentiments of the people, have been corrupted. Expecting they get noticed by gma who is known for rewarding those who are loyal to her, it is a pity many mediamen fall prey to this shameful and deliberate attempt of gma to secure her stint in the palace for the rest of her stolen term..Obviously, the likes of Agustin and Pedrosa belong to this kind. No matter how they vehemently denied it, it is apparent these two were there as a show of support for gma & jdv and not as mediamen..Good thing RC was there and pounced on them single-handedly to the shock of JDV and his cahoots. JDV did not expect an RC at the press con. He thought he would be hearing all ‘hallelujahs’ that time.

  66. Statement of the NATIONAL UNION OF JOURNALISTS OF THE PHILIPPINES (NUJP)

    WE STAND BY FREE EXPRESSION

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines is embarrassed and saddened by the ill-judged and unconscionable behavior shown by some colleagues in the media who ganged up on activist Renato Constantino Jr. during the press conference called by Speaker Jose de Venecia last Saturday.

We particularly deplore the action of columnist Victor Agustin of the Philippine Daily Inquirer who doused Mr. Constantino with water.

We will not begrudge the journalists concerned if they felt that Mr. Constantino was out of line by speaking at a press conference they believed only the media were entitled to attend.

But for them to berate Mr. Constantino and, worse, physically attack him for expressing himself is tragic. For how can we, who invoke press freedom and the right to free expression in the exercise of our calling, even deign to prevent others, especially citizens who actually own these freedoms, from exercising these rights?

The NUJP would like to make its stand clear on this sorry incident. Under no circumstances will we abide by any attempt to stifle free expression from which the freedom of the press merely emanates, especially not through physical means and especially not by one of our own.
