  1. Mr Recto here has dilapidated the political capital that his late and respected nationalist grandfather Claro M Recto built.

As we say in French, wealthy families usually finally lose their wealth through the third generation; the wealth of a family is created by the grandfather, it is spent by the son and is squandered and finally dilapidated by the grandson.

We may not be talking here of wealth as in material wealth but Mr Recto-Santos has fallen into the same trap… he’s squandered his political heritage, all in the service of one immoral political midget.

What a waste of precious ration, this Recto has become.

  2. chi chi

  3. Hindi kaya political modus operandi ni Sotto at Oreta iyan just to get elected? If they win, babaligtad sila uli (vs Gloria)?

  4. chi chi

We don’t need you, opportunists, you’re just making ordinary pinoy lives more complicated. TSUPI kayong lahat! #$%@&^*&^$#$@%^ GGGRRRRRR!

  5. chi chi

    Anna,

It doesn’t surprise me at all. They are just being true to their real color, TRAPOS forever!

  6. mike_dlc mike_dlc

    from ana:
Hindi kaya political modus operandi ni Sotto at Oreta iyan just to get elected? If they win, babaligtad sila uli (vs Gloria)?

Possible, why not. Sana nga, pero I doubt it. Ang tanong, mananalo pa ba sila?

  7. Chabeli Chabeli

The next wave of JOKES-after TATAD, SOTTO, & ORETA-is RECTO, PANGILINAN & VILLAR. To my mind, these TRAPOS are “namamangka sa dalawang ilog..Kasi kahit sumakay yan sa tiket ng oposisyon, dahil nga walang prinsipyo, hindi ka makakasiguro kung sakaling magka-impeachment ay hindi yan kakampi kay Arroyo. Aside from Recto, this also applies to some of the JOKERS. Take for example, Manny Villar. Gloria knows about his baho regarding his loans..but that’s another story.

Most people do not want an Opposition that will be comprised of recycled TRAPOS. UNO listened to the voice of the people. Those who refused to listen, went to their corner, cried, & into to the arms of their Dirty Mama, GLUERIA ! Ah, nothing like a “winnable” ticket for Gloria !

  8. Tell you what Chi, I personally vote by process of elimination.

These are the guys I definitely didn’t and won’t vote for:

Recto Pangilinan Enrile Angara Honasan Revilla Villar Joker Arroyo; And will now add to that list: Sotto & Oreta + Tatad

    Nakalimutan ko na ang iba…

On top of my list: Pimentel, General Biazon (can he still run?), Lacson and if Alan Cayetano runs, I will vote for him. I have not considered JV Ejercito but for the sake of giving this gloria bansot government a run for their stolen money, I just might.

I prefer to put only 4 or 5 senatorial bets on the ballot but I find it difficult to vote for politicians whom I believe have failed my expectations.

  9. mike_dlc mike_dlc

    My short list…

    Chiz Escudero
    Alan Peter Cayetano
    Noynoy Aquino
    Koko Pimentel
    Ping Lacson

  10. Ay tama, Mike_dlc!

I forgot Chiz Escudero but will vote for him!

  11. We’re on the same wavelength: Chiz Escudero, Alan Peter Cayetano, Noynoy Aquino, Koko Pimentel, Ping Lacson

  12. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

I must say I agree with you there, Ellen…Maaga pa, mag-kaalaman na. And to further take-off from a previous item of yours, “Takbo, lahat kayong mga traidor, takbo”.

  13. Chabeli Chabeli

    Same w/ Mike_dlc & Anna de brux:

    Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, III
    Alan Peter S. Cayetano
    Francis “Chiz” G. Escudero
    Panfilo “Ping” Lacson
    Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel, III

  14. Chabeli Chabeli

I think the “Third Force” will turn out to be “THE DARK SIDE OF THE FORCE.” Heheheh. DIRTY MAMA GLUERIA is Darth Vader.

  15. chi chi

    Anna, Chabeli and Mike_dlc,

    Your candidates are mine, too!

  16. fearlesswarrior fearlesswarrior

Ka Chi, Angara is rejected by all sides. His political career has ended.

I just hope and wish Ms. Vilma Santos and Ms. Sharon Cuneta will do something so that their husbands become the true fighters for the Filipino people. The 2 senators have been “traydor” to our democracy. I believe they will soon join the ticket of the cheater & liar bansot.God forgive them!!! My choices: Lacson, N. Aquino, Escudero, Sotto, and Cayetano. I still have to fill the remaining seats. I must include J. Binay.

Please take note the timing of such turnaround by Atong Ang. Why now when election is fast approaching and President Erap is the undisputed leader of the opposition? Unang-una, bakit pinabalik agad si Atong sa Pilipinas when my source told me his immigration status in the US is still pending on appeal? Uncle Sam is excited and happy about the recent killing of one Abu Sayyaf leader. More aids are pouring into Arroyo’s government. Folks, things don’t look good for Erap and the opposition. Dirty tricks are indeed being applied now and with a bang! More than ever, we must be vigilant. More dirty tricks are coming…

Cuts bargain with prosecutor on P130-M kickback

    By Norman Bordadora
    Inquirer
Last updated 01:52am (Mla time) 01/25/2007

THE ESTRADA defense team had no inkling that the prosecution had a coup.

Yesterday, Charlie “Atong” Ang, a former gambling buddy of deposed President Joseph “Erap” Estrada, agreed to return to the government P25 million, which he said he took from the P130 million in tobacco excise tax that he and Estrada “diverted” in 1998.

The return of the P25 million is part of the plea bargain that Ang offered to the Sandiganbayan, the court trying him and Estrada for plunder.

The agreement, if approved by the anti-graft court, would allow Ang to enter a plea of guilty for the lesser offense of bribery, which carries a six-year prison term, and avoid a possible sentence of 40 years for plunder, Special Prosecutor Dennis Villa-Ignacio said.

    Hello all,

I have been reading Ellen’s blog for sometime now and I really admire her and others who are regular to this site. I truly impressed by the wit, observations and analysis of all, esp. Anna D. B., fearlesswarrior, norpil, etc. I really used to like Anna d. B. because she really makes sense and knows what she is talking about. I am however been so disappointed by the way she’s been attacking FW lately. It really shocking to read all the things she’s been writing, the insults, the sarcasm, etc. I couldn’t believe she could really be that mean and so disrepectful of others’ beliefs. Worst of all, she’s been name calling and making so spiteful remarks. I thought all along that the regulars here understand and respect each other but how come this kind of hateful exchange of “patutsada” is being tolerated? I must admit, your credibility to me went down a notch. To FW, I salute you for taking all the beatings in stride, and you have my respect. To Ellen, yes, you do owe him an apology. Peace to all.

  20. fearlesswarrior fearlesswarrior

Salamat po Kabayang Agood. Hindi pala ako nag-iisa. Please don’t get me wrong, Madame A is a very intelligent woman and I think she’s nice to everyone except to me. This recent exchange between Ka Ellen and me, sumakay pa si Madame A. She added more fire to already volatile condition. Pero may pagkakamali din naman ako. I should not have reacted and just ignored it. I really want to have peace. Twice I offered peace pero sinupalpal niya ako. What more can I do? A. You only have to review all the past posts to know this. Once again, thanks Agood.

  21. fearlesswarrior fearlesswarrior

One more thing Ka Agood, she or they would again suspect that your name is an alias created by me. Multiple personality daw. When I changed my name mandirigma to FW, naging tutoo ako hindi tulad ng iba diyan.

Time for these politicians that there remain in them even just an ounce of decency and integrity. Balimbing, hindi maganda iyan. Kung hindi sila makasama sa slot ng oposisyon, so be it. Tumulong na lang sila na mabato ang mga nakasama sa kanila para manalo on the condition that the opposition does not include the balimbings from the other side like Villar, Pangilinan and Recto. Time for the party that will challenge the Great Switik’s to show that they can produce good people to run for the Opposition.

Nakakaawa! Babuyan pa! Pwe!

Tayo dito dapat tira lang ng tira! Out there I know na nakaka-blog dito ay may nakukuha rin kahit papaano. This is what I get from people who are able to get to connect with me privately. At least, kami dito sa Japan, may grassroot movement to educate the OFWs here to vote right. Problema nga lang sa embassy puede nilang dayain ang mga boto lalo na ngayong puro tuta ng mga switik ang nakaupo, something that actually is not the same in Japanese diplomatic missions overseas where the staff are bureaucrats and not political appointees!!!

The 8M Filipinos abroad should demand for better service and better DFA with a union of stronger bureaucrats who will not allow themselves to be used by crooks getting elected to positions in the government through vote-rigging/stealing and over-use of public funds plus donations from lobbyists and gambling lords.

    PATALSIKIN NA, NOW NA!

  23. Sorry, this should read: Tumulong na lang sila na MABOTO ang mga nakasama sa OPPOSITION TICKET para manalo on the condition that the opposition does not include the balimbings from the other side like Villar, Pangilinan and Recto. Time for the party that will challenge the Great Switik’s to show that they can produce good people to run for the Opposition. MARAMI DIYAN! MAGHANAP LANG SILA NG MGA MATATAPANG AT HINDI TAKOT KAHIT SA GASTOS!

WHAT FILIPINOS GET, THEY DESERVE! KUNG PALPAK ANG IBINOTO NILA, KASALANAN NILA. TIME FOR THEM TO LEARN HOW TO VOTE RIGHT!

In most cases, fencejumpers (opportunists)are punished by the voters, unless obviously they did jump on matters of principles. But jumping into the back of a “crocodile” for a swim is not, I believe a principled move. Such is the case of Sotto and Oreta that instead helping the camapaign of the opposition, they did for their own selfish interest abandoned the most important principle of a person, standing by your principles and willing to pay the personal sacrifice. I think that is still foreign to most Pinoy Politicians.

  25. Spy Spy

My advice for those who are anti-gma but are still confused whom to vote for senator is:
to vote opposition candidates who overtly and consistently fight and condemned GMA and her administration.
List them down and you’ll be surprised kokonti lang pala sila. Among them are Sen Lacson, Cong Cayetano,Cong Escudero.

Junk the trapos!

  26. Agood Agood

Hello again. As you could see, I am a first timer here and should have posted my comments on the “Sotto Oreta” thread. That means I am not FW bec. I don’t know my way around yet. I am a woman and have been out of the country since 1989; spent the first 8 years in Europe and have been in the USA for 10 years now. Even though I’ve been out of PI so long now, I am still very much in touch and very knowledgeable about PI thanks to weblog like these, TFC and GMA channels. Like all of you, I am concerned with what’s happening back home and fervently wish and pray that Philippines will rise up once again and eventually be at the forefront of democracy and economy, and get rid off all the “trapos” in the government. I cannot believe that our country is being run like a family business with the eager participation of corrupt politicians and military (the latter who should be the defender of the hoi polloi but have now become the modern day berdugos). Sana dumami pa ang katulad ni A. Cayetano. Peace to all.

Enter uli ako ng sandali to acknowledge you Kabayang Agood. Welcome to the group. Masasanay ka din dito. I like your opening remarks.

    Yuko,

One thing sure, these third force- wanna-bes are just trying their luck to be included in the UNO list. Unlike Dirty Mama Glueria ticket (who has people’s money) and UNO, they don’t have the machinery in the grassroot level to guard their individual ballots.

  30. You bet, Chi, it’s time Binay and company choose the right! Maraming mapapagpiliin sa too lang. Money, they found out, is not a problem.

Kuwento ni Senator Pimentel sa amin na masaya daw sila despite the attempt on the part of the Bansot to mar their campaigns. Pati ang kawalan nila ng pera tinira but they were undaunted. Nanalo sila as a matter of fact.

Pangatlo ang pilipino sa mga nahuhuli dito for theft and robbery. Nakakahiya talaga sila! And they pride themselves for being the only Christians (kuno) in Asia!

Time to teach Filipinos a simple arithmetic as a matter of fact.

They don’t know when to quit. Gaya na lang ni Tatad at Oreta, don’t they feel that there’s no chance for them to win ever again. It’ll do the opposition and us good if they will just disappear and let the likes of Chiz and Allan take over the senate.

  34. Indeed Yuko! Ellen needs to focus on other things – she has graciously hosted us in this blog.

Again, so why bother with nonsense?

  35. On the other hand, I cannot help feeling sorry for Angara for being now a scapegoat of these politicians without spines. For what they have shown, Sotto, Oreta, et al, should call it quits. Sira na sila as a matter of fact for joining the bandwagdon where the money is ala-Brenda.

Tawag diyan, mga ganid! Buti na lang I never fell for Sotto or Oreta, not even Loren as a matter of fact. I have my standards based on my religious beliefs, and I am glad that I have stuck to our beliefs as when I say that I will never patronize or vote a candidate with history of adultery, etc. regardless of any attempt to correct the situation even by devious means as when Legarda’s husband converted to Islam so he could legitimize his harem!

At least, over in Japan, our politicians abide by some standard rules—adulterers are out! Pag nabisto, nagre-resign and/or nagpapakamatay! Wish it would be the same someday over in our birthland! And when we vote, we really participate. Otherwise, we boycott and nobody says he has won!

    PATALSIKIN NA, NOW NA!

  36. Sinabi mo pa, Anna. Why bother with the nonsense? Kasi wala silang common sense! It’s as simple as that.

Frankly, I don’t even have to be a genius to blog here and share. It’s all common sense, and practical experience as when I volunteer for people who run for office in our community or from the grassroot movements that I am part of. Eventuality with the help of a very strong media, bistado sila and they jump to their untimely death.

Sayang nga hindi uso sa Pilipinas ang scouting good politicians from the grassroot movements. Mas alam nila ang problema and they know how to solve them. Lamentably, those they have in the Philippines, don’t get voted. They get killed via extrajudicial killing!

    PATALSIKIN NA, NOW NA!

Hopefully, Filipinos will become better voters this time, and protect their votes, they should!

Sotto, Oreta to join admin ticket

    By LYNDA T. JUMILLA
    ABS-CBN News

Now that former senators Vicente “Tito” Sotto III and Teresa “Tessie” Aquino-Oreta have bolted the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP) to join the Nationalist People’s Coalition, what’s next for these two opposition stalwarts and known loyalists of former president Joseph Estrada?

Sotto and Oreta are set to join the administration senatorial line-up under the guise of a “unity ticket,” according to sources in the opposition.

    http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryId=64473

  39. Chi,

What can I say but pathetic! Now as for the guy who was crying wolf here from day one he heard of the negotiation with Danding to put Oreta and Sotto under his wings versus Angara, you bet your bottom dollar this guy is an insider vent to discredit the Opposition, which held on to its resolution to keep the Opposition slate clean sans the trapos that Oreta and Sotto prove themselves to be by this rumor.

On the other hand, why should this be considered a threat to the Opposition if the Filipinos indeed have learned their lessons? Apparently, what these Internet Brigaders are trying to do is discredit Ellen, and even the bloggers in this blog, and make it look that Filipinos indeed will never learn because they are hopelessly debased starting from the wannabe criminal calling herself president!!! Mabuti nga iyong sama-sama na sila!

One thing I can vouch for with authority in fact is Senator Pimentel and his son Kokoy whom I have worked with on a lot of projects for Filipinos in and out of the Philippines. Let’s say they are personal friends, but I am one who will not patronize even a sister or a brother if he is a crook, and I can tell anyone to back off if he/she only has “tsismis” to present versus personal testimonies that I have of what the Senator and his children have done for their country and people sans publicity!

I don’t know Cayetano but he seems OK to me as he stands firm on his ground versus the Fatso. He can be the Opposition’s banner carrier as a matter of fact. Sotto and Oreta could have provided him with the full support to put the Opposition up. But on the other, it’s good riddance that they have joined their kabalen.

As for Chiz Escudero, I have heard of the bravery of his grandfather. I was hoping he would be as brave, but personal relationship with the bogus president must have held him back!!!

Kawawang Pilipinas! Apparently, maraming bobo! Me? I’ll support Trillanes! I’ll tell my friends to vote for him, that is if he can get a nomination.

SAKIT NG PILIPINAS, SI TRILLANES ANG LUNAS! BUGAW NA ASTA PROSTITUTA PA, PATALSIKIN NA, NOW NA!

  40. tikbalang tikbalang

  41. Come to think of it, all these blah-blah about Sotto and Oreta in fact is more another tactic to discredit the Opposition, which is a sure winner in the May election, even at the expense of Angara.

I wonder how much this politician from Quezon rumored to be one of those responsible for “balding” the forests there is getting for allowing himself to be a scapegoat?

I say, “Nice try!” The Opposition is here to win. Getting Sotto and Oreta to the Switik side is an attempt to give the impression that Erap’s hold on the “Mahirap” who make up the majority of the voting population is weakening. Well, to see is to believe!

On the other hand, what a wonderful way indeed to kill any growing love of country in Filipinos with these examples of treachery. Isa lang naman ang tanong: Who do you serve, God or Mammon? Danding may have the money, so what?

Quote for today: “And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations. • • •If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? • • • No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” (Luke 16: 9, 11, 13)

  42. BLACK KNIGHT BLACK KNIGHT

A lot of the people he patronized stabbed him at the back. That was what my mother said about him.

Kamag-anak ng mother ko si Marcos on the father’s side (Rubio family), but one thing sure is he did not patronize any of his relatives on his father’s side.

I saw him when they were in Hawaii. He was a pathetic sight. Si Danding Cojuangco din, I saw in SFO but never had the chance to talk to him on one to one. Kasa-kasama siya sa mga meeting with the Marcos loyalist movement doon. Now, mabango siya kasi may pera siya!

All the more reason now why we should back up the Opposition. Yehey!

  44. I see, Ellen’s blog is still the way I left it. The zombies have once again risen and they are more rabid than before. The joys of blogging. Nice to know that the friends I have here remain true to their word.

Its better that at this early stage, the trapos have unmasked themselves. They have nothing to offer the opposition and more importantly, the people. I’m glad the opposition is listening to the stakeholders than stick with political prostitutes.

    To all:
I refrain myself to post my comment in here because the temperature is getting hotter, can we please cool down the thermostat a bit. It’s been my greatest desire to post in this thread too .As you can all see ,there are two things that we all differ in opinion .Religion and politics ,unless we can learn how to compromise we will have an infinite discussion.
As I can see, we are starting to form a third force.
In politics there is no permanent allies, those politicians are compared to a wise businessman. They are only looking for there self interest and profits .They don’t invest money if they lost unless ,it is not there capital. Or they are a gambler.
Now ,we can see transparently what are there motives .Selfish and greed.

  46. Sinabi mo pa, Schumey. With the turn of events, I see a great future for the Philippines. Umpisa na! I guess, natoto nang husto sina Binay sa experience nila before, during and after the election. God willing, sila ang mananalo!!!

    SEN. JINGGOY EJERCITO-ESTRADA
Total Number of Bills/Resolutions Filed: 279
    Pending In Committee: 261
    Pending Second Reading: 3
Consolidated/Substituted In The Committee Report: 11
    Consolidated With Adopted Resolution: 3

Wow!!! May ibubuga naman pala si Jinggoy. Or rather, may ibubuga naman pala ang legislative staff niya. They do all the hard work anyway. He was able to file 279 bills and resolutions during the 13th Congress. But the proof of the pie is in the eating…Ilan ang naipasa? Tatlo? A measly 3 out of 279? That’s 1.07%!!! Either his bills are really crappy or everyone hates him in the Senate and people kill his bills even before they get read or enter a committee. Just take a look at the numbers. A good 93.5% of his bills are stuck in committee!!!

What about the three which got consolidated with an adopted resolution? Surely we must credit Jinggoy’s acumen as a Senator for at least passing three noteworthy resolutions. Let’s see what the three resolutions are all about:

    RESOLUTION: SRN-425
    DATE: 1/23/2006
TITLE: RESOLUTION HONORING MANNY ‘PACMAN’ PACQUIAO FOR HIS VICTORY IN THE RECENT BOXING REMATCH IN LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA HELD LAST JANUARY 22, 2006

    RESOLUTION: SRN-586
    DATE: 11/13/2006
TITLE: RESOLUTION COMMENDING RONATO ‘RONNIE’ ALCANO FOR HIS VICTORY IN THE 2006 WORLD POOL CHAMPIONSHIP WHICH IS CONSIDERED AS THE WORLD’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS 9-BALL TOURNAMENT, THUS BRINGING PRIDE AND HONOR TO THE FILIPINO NATION

    RESOLUTION: SRN-590
    DATE: 11/20/2006
TITLE: RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING AND COMMENDING MANNY ‘PACMAN’ PACQUIAO FOR HIS REMARKABLE VICTORY IN THE CONCLUSION OF A BOXING TRILOGY AGAINST ERIK ‘EL TERRIBLE’ MORALES ON NOVEMBER 19, 2006 IN LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

Anak ng p…atola!!!!!! Bakit puro resolutions honoring and commending sports heroes ito? Any Tom, Dick and Harry could do this. This is NOT the work of a Senator. I am not paying my taxes so that Jinggoy could congratulate Manny Pacquiao! I have nothing against Manny – in fact he should get all the accollades and more. What I am against is that I pay taxes so that the imbeciles in the Senate (na hindi ko naman ibinoto pero nanalo) should hunker down and get to work drafting laws for the betterment of the country.

  49. Thank you for those who continue to support this blog for the principles it stands for.

As we are experiencing now, there are a number of saboteurs who have invaded this blog.

It’s a bother, yes. But let’s see it as a price we have to pay for making our presence felt.

This blog is in the top 30 in the Philippines and one of the top five political blogs.

If we don’t matter, they won’t waste their time on us. The know that we are making an impact, that’s why they are out to destroy us.

We will not let them have their way.

actually Ma’m Ellen, they are not wasting their time, cause it’s what they’re paied for to do. What’s being wasted is the money and resources of our country, ito ang trabahong ipinangako ni gloria at ng kaniyang mga alipores, ang gawing gestapo ang mga kababayan nating naghihikahos upang magsilbi nilang aso na kakahol at kakagat sa bawa’t Pilipino na sisigaw at boo-boo sa kanila.

Look people, there are a lot of things to be considered when we choose who we want to vote, for example, the qualification of a candidate. We should be wise enough to select who we want represent us in the halls of congress. It’s no secret that there are candidates who only represents their own personal interest.

We should vote wisely in the may 2007 election.

    vote wisely.

Congrats to Ms. Ellen for having one of the most read blogs in the internet. Different views are being poured out by bloggers like me with the single obejective of flushing down the draing the cheaters, stealers and liars of our country. Having said that, I’m sorry to say that this blog or any another blogs with the same objective is still not enough (although making headway) since we still need to reach out to the millions who have no access to the internet. A text brigade perhaps? Any suggestions?

  61. joeseg joeseg

I am aware everybody understands that in politics and specifically in getting into the senatorial slate, there’s always the backdoor maneuvering to get the needed attention and finally the nod of the selection committee. Until the final list has been announced, we are in animated suspense and everything is speculative.

What happened with Tito Sotto and Tessie Aquino is a simple move of transfering from one party who’s not active to another party which is active. It’s does not necessarily mean that they are automatically joining the ticket of the administration. They resigned from LDP because LDP is no longer a potent force with Ed Angara as its president confirmed that he’s not running not even in the third force.

In joining the NPC, they are in a company with Chiz Escudero. Remember Chiz was Danding Cojuangco’s proxy in a wedding with gma making abresiete with him? It could be a another strategy the same stand as the LP and NP battng for their own candidates for inclusion in the senatiorial ticket. NPC will now have the bargaining power.

But just like in the past, there’s always nagtatampo if not selected. Lipat sa kabila. It will not surprise us if finally Tessie Oreta will do that. After all, her sister Lupita is with gma. Tito Sotto, I believe will not follow suit but if he does, it’s his ball game. Hayaan natin. Anyway, he was the nino bonito of gma before. But for me, it’s like a kiss of death for both of them. Fini.

Pero tayo dito, let’s stick to the issue. Why we are here is because we are being allowed to write and say our piece by the gracious host. Let’s not abuse it repeating what has been said already.

Finally, no matter what and how we argue, as far as I am concerned, the objective remains the same, is 12-0.

Arroyo backs freeze on minimum wage hike

    01/25/2007

President Arroyo has backed calls by the business community for a freeze on an increase in the minimum wage, her spokesman yesterday said.

The House of Representatives passed a bill last December increasing the daily minimum wage of Filipino workers by P125, staggered over three years, in a bid to give low paid workers more purchasing power.

Wages in the Philippines vary by region but the national daily average is around P283, according to the Department of Labor and Employment data.

The minimum daily wage in Manila is higher at around P350 pesos.

Businessmen, particularly those operating medium-sized enterprises, have warned of massive layoffs and a possible increase in inflation if the pay raise had gone ahead.

The House has now deferred implementation of the bill subject to new debates. (for full story, click to http://www.tribune.net.ph)

  65. ptz_public window ptz_public window

    prans,

as far as i can remember P125 wage increase (for private sector) and P3000 increase (for govt employees) is a brainchild of AnakPawis party list, just not to show malacanang contempt to our workers and govt employees which for years have never been given the fair increase (legislated that is) amidst years of inflation, they look for their fall guy in the House.

They found Rep. Remulla (of Cavite) to file the re-consideration of the Bill… at any rate ayaw ipakita ni GMA na i-ve-veto nya ang P125 increase bill… sympre eleksyon year ngaun, gusto ba nyang mamukhang anti-labor?

Economic growth likely short of 5.5% target
    from tribune’s business section:

    01/25/2007

The economy likely grew in a range of 5.3 and 5.6 percent last year, compared to 5.1 percent in 2005, the economic planning department yesterday said. Official growth figures are due for release next Wednesday.

The government previously said it expected the economy to grow 5.5 percent last year.

Dennis Arroyo, policy and planning director of the National Economic and Development Authority, said last year’s growth was driven by the services sector which likely advanced by between 6.0 and 6.3 percent.

Agriculture was expected to have delivered growth of 3.8-4.0 percent, while the industrial sector likely grew 5.2-5.4 percent, he added.

On the demand side, Arroyo, no relation to President Arroyo, said last year’s overall growth was driven by domestic consumption and exports. AFP

    *****

Over here, Anna, these are the kind of politicians that wiser Japanese voters do not vote for. That is why those who are disatisfied with their parties usually form their own parties and factions in and outside of their groups or form some coalition with another parties to form another party as in the case for example of the Minshuto, which unfortunately lost its integrity when a young lawyer, who just got himself elected for a position in the Upper House of the Japanese Diet, failed to prove culpability of a leading politician during the reign of Koizumi, and everybody in fact losing face, even the fact that the integrity of the Koizumi administration came under public scrutiny.

But then, of course, Japan is not the Philippines, where majority of the voters do not even understand that they have a right to demand for more quality politicians, not just some idiot riding on his grandfather’s illustrious name, or even a not so illustrious father whose own reign is remembered by Filipinos as one of the worst in Philippine political history as in the case of the father of the Great Switik who rose to power through grave manipulation and cheating.

  77. You bet, Ellen, hangga’t maaga nagkakaalaman na.

I actually wondered how Binay would accommodate the sourgrapes. Ang daming gustong sumama sa Opposition because nobody wanted to be identified with the Great Switik anymore, and they are allowed only 12 Senators, and they have to produce real tough ones to save the Senate as a matter of fact.

Umalis na iyong mga palpak at pasikat! Ironically, these sourgrapes, who professed to be anti-GMA are now the ones up to glorify her! Parang si Brenda! Nauseating! Talaga naman! In short, pakitang tao lang pala!

I wonder how much money will go around to make Sotto, Oreta and even Recto to win again this time? I hope not!

Let’s pray for the Opposition to produce the 12-0 winnable candidates, who can prove that money should not be the criteria to win a position in the Philippines, but guts, brains and most of all the will and desire to serve for the Philippines and the Filipinos! Time for these politicians to know who their bosses are—the public who vote for them and not the other way around!!!

A good citizen’s interpretation of the NEWS

PNP: Iloilo Assault Team Lacked Force
The Philippine National Police said Thursday the officers that assaulted the Iloilo Provincial Capitol last week should undergo re-training courses for failing to use enough force during the siege.
    abs-cbnNEWS.com (1/25/2007 6:10:19 PM)

Interpretation: Members of the assault team lacked the guts, are not hungry enough, and do not have yet the experience in violating human rights like their Metro Manila counterparts. Indeed they need more training and some incentives to really live up to their monster image. When nobody is killed or get hospitalized, then not enough force was applied to scare other officials marked for suspension or dismissal.

Take it or leave it. Iyan ang pinakahuling balitang nakuha ko. Salamat at Mabuhay!

  85. Jay,

Re: “Why are Trillanes and Gringo in jail in the first place? ”

I don’t know why Gtringo is in jail and feel sorry that Trillanes and his comrades (many of whom were the bravest, the most upright and patriotic junior officers of the AFP) but Trillanes failed in his bid to topple Gloria so he’s in prison.

Perhaps, Trillanes and his group didn’t really want to blow up Oakwood but only wanted to call attention of the people, the media and to tap on the good people to listen to their grievances. So that when they had been heard, they surrendered and nobody was hurt. If that was truly their objective, then they succeeded… their objective attained.

I would like to give Trillanes and his group the benefit of the doubt, hence the above thought; on the other hand, if their mutiny (actually, based on what I’ve read, one could conclude that their act was a botched coup d’état rather than just plain mutiny) was actually botched by none other but by themselves, i.e., because they had meant to go through with a REAL coup d’état for an objective even if it meant sacrificing their lives but failed because they got scared at the last minute and surrendered, then I will have serious misgivings about Trillanes and his friends.

  86. I hope your advice reaches him. I’m not sure if he got my message regarding the OECD and the Brigade des Finances. He is one tough cookie. This is the kind of people we need in government.

A few things to ponder about Atong Ang’s turnaround: To save his own ass, he recanted his story and pinned down Erap. Ang abogado ni Ang tauhan ni Singson. Ang’s mother and family were reportedly harassed. Death penalty was abolished partly or mainly to allow Ang to return home. Two months in jail proved to be too much even to the most loyal friend. The brainwashing, intimidation and even threat. Singson and Defensor have visited him on several occasions.

You said it, Anna. That was how it was to me, and why Trillanes and Company were easy to believe Cimatu that their grievances would be heard and nothing untoward would happen to them. They were actually tricked!

    ellen ..

    am surprised and really impressed.

  95. “Oftentimes, people who are sincere and have no evil thoughts can be as naive and easy to be deceived!”

    Agree.

Nonetheless, Trillanes should have exhausted all that was possible by confronting his FOIC on his charges concerning thievery in the Navy, after all his UP thesis was already an open secret within the Navy.

Instead, he decided to go it alone with Honasan who was not his commanding officer at the highest level.

I do realize, he was naive and got tricked.

The moral of the story – NO SURRENDER!

  96. Jay,

Corruption is not a Philippine Navy monopoly. It’s all over the AFP, GHQ included as well as in DND.

  97. Anna,

The way I understood the report and transmissions from Manila was that Trillanes was talking to people on top at the AFP about the anomalies they were complaining about, but when they did not listen, he went to Malacanang as a last resort. The bogus president, being part of the anomaly, did not do anything of course. Thus, the attempt to make it public via media exposure, etc. at the Oakwood.

  98. He might have been talking to the CSAFP but HE WAS (although is still one) A NAVY OFFICER… Chain of command dictates that he should speak to his FOIC if he cannot talk to his immediate CO because he belongs to that service.

  99. Particularly in 1999 when he could have done it with no threat to his life.

What I disapproved of is that he erred in his judgement by going to Honasan first.

That’s wrong! Even when he submitted his grievances to Gloria, twas too late.

If I had been his FOIC when he did what he did, I WOULD HAVE PLACED HIM UNDER ARREST RIGHT AWAY and not released him without having faced a court martial first.

He cannot expect to correct a wrong by doing another wrong.

  100. In 2003, after he submitted his grievances to Gloria, his FOIC then committed a blunder by just placing him “under protection” and releasing him after making him sign a waiver.

    He wasn’t arrested.

  101. And by the way, I told his FOIC then (2003) that he committed a monumental blunder re releasing Trillanes!

  102. His FOIC said he wanted to be a father like figure but I said, then he behaved like an idiotic father.

  103. Point is Anna, it’s easier said than done. The guy must have approached a lot of people as spokesperson of his group whose voices were not being heard. Honasan must have been suggested to them to approach since he was with the government but still considered one of them. I just don’t know if it was Honasan who suggested that he should bring the matter to Malacanang for proper action.

Alam mo naman ang sistema sa Pilipinas. Ipagpapasa-pasa ka no matter how much you want to go through proper protocol.

  104. Yuko,

True, easier said than done but he FAILED to approach the ONE OFFICER he should have approached instead of going all over the place, assuming he did, in 1999 – as a NAVY OFFICER, he should have gone to his FOIC then which I know he didn’t, not by a long shot!

  105. He says too in his UP thesis that Commo Domingo tried to eliminate corruption; NOT TRUE! Absolutely not! Commo Domingo, Class 69 was as corrupt as his classmates but of course, very close to HONASAN.

Commo Domingo DID NOT eliminate corruption in the Phil Fleet! On the contrary, he had a hand in many of the purchases.

tungkol kay Chiz Escudero seguro huli
siya sa iboboto ko. Dahil sa tatay niya
na naging instrumento ng magasawang Marcos
noong Martial Law.

Parang high sipsip potential.
Parang dikya, bata pa walang backbone. Ayun takbo kay Gloria sa Malacanang to receive an award, lipad sa Davao to escort Gloria.

  107. I don’t want to blacken the record of these Navy officials gratuitously. Just that Trillanes’ papers contain some inaccuracies.

Commo Domingo served his nation well but Trillanes cannot make me gobble something that I know is not true.

  108. Ellen, seems the title of the blog post here “Habang maaga, magka-alaman na” is very à propos!

Anyway, did you hear about Manny Pacquiao’s recent application for 20 gun permits for his security that was approved by Comelec? What ever happened to the murder case against his bodyguard who killed a civilian in Gensan? The guy is either running for Mayor or Congressman. Just imagine if he is already a politician. Ilan kaya ang bodyguard niya?

  111. Anna,

His reason must be because he could not trust his FOIC, which is logical! So, he has to tell someone else he could trust. I would do the same if I were in the Philippine Navy and everybody looks corrupt to me! He could have resigned first and expose the anomalies in the AFP, but what guaranty was there that he would not be lynched? I think this is also the reason why a lot many soldiers there now, especially the low-ranking officers, are not as bold to do something to correct what is wrong.

Pathetic, it is indeed what’s happened to Trillanes and friends, and the whole AFP!

  112. Yuko,

Then he misplaced his trust. Wrong judgement call!

In the military, they have to face the music squarely. How could he have not trusted his FOIC but trusted Domingo?

Let’s say for the sake of argument that at that instance (in 1999) when he was making his investigations, gathering info for his report, he could have found something incriminating his FOIC so didn’t trust him but then, why should he clear Commo Domingo who was one of those who was corrupt in the Phil Fleet?

In other words, there was bad judgement call and for a Navy officer of his so-called intelligence and depth, to have erred by miles and miles, something is amiss.

Therefore, I prefer to reserve judgement. I cannot at this point, approve of what he has done because of the missing dots.

  113. Also, in 1999 things were different from what the AFP finds itself today or since Gloria acceeded to power in 2001.

While corruption was prevalent in 1999, the AFP had not been tied to Gloria at all lock stock and barrel so Trillanes could have gone to his FOIC then and as I said, he didn’t so why not?

  114. My personal take is that Two or three members of Class 69 and Honasan used and abused young, idealistic Trillanes and his friends

Granted, a young, idealist of a navy lieutenant is easily impressionable particularly when his superiors give him importance.

My question is what makes us so sure that Trillanes has gone beyond that?

  115. Yuko,

I would like to tell Trillanes and his friends that I was one of those who defended their stand after they surrendered in that I felt that they had the courage of their convictions to face military charges according to the Articles of War.

More so when Gloria’s people including General Efren Abu decided to back out of a gentleman’s agreement with Trillanes’ group that they would not be facing civilian courts.

It was traydoran of the lowest category. I believe they cannot and should not trust this government anymore.

However, having said that, I reserve my judgement on Trillanes and his acts or failure to act in military, navy officer fashion before the ascent of Gloria to power.

  116. I don’t see any difference in 1999 and 2001, Anna. The corruption in the AFP has been ongoing since I can remember especially when FVR was manning it. He wrote his term paper in 1999, and his superiors could have read it, but they did not do anything to correct the mistakes and anomalies he pointed out.

Then, finally, he blew his tops and with his friends did the last thing they thought could trigger some action. You’re right, they failed and now they suffer but I won’t condemn him without fair trial. He has to be heard, and if there is anything he should be punished for, is how he put a lot many lives in danger at the time of the Oakwood mutiny.

That, however, will depend on the evidences of the explosives they actually boasted they planted around the said premises. Over here, it can mean termination from service and a prison term (no suspended sentence allowed for cases where human lives are likely to be sacrificed).

Still, I am willing to excuse this fellow and challenge him to prove his worth as the antidote against corruption that he professes he loathes as in SAKIT NG ‘PINAS, SI TRILLANES ANG LUNAS!

  117. I understand Yuko.

But I am a militarist and for as long as he carries the title of Lieutenant PN, I will treat him as one.

  118. Just as you have written above, Anna, the FOIC also is to blame for what Trillanes did in 2003. All the more reason why I am convinced the guy and his fellow mutineers had reached their limits when they staged their publicity stunt, which it was more like.

On the other hand, you’re right. Dapat sana patay kung patay! At least, I did not see Trillanes surrender. Iyong mga kasama niya ang nag-surrender.

  119. Also, what I don’t understand is why he trusted and cleared Commo Domingo of corruption?

  123. TonGuE-tWisTeD TonGuE-tWisTeD

Jay Cynikho (jay seneca in PCIJ?), the information you have on Chiz Escudero’s father is faulty. The brahma cattle purchase as you attributed to Salvador Escudero as your reason Chiz is low on your list is unfounded.

The cattle was purchased by a biotech scientist under Imelda’s Minstry of Human Settlements in the 70’s for his research experiments which aimed to use genetic modification technology in support of Imelda’s vision of taking the Philippines abreast with the first world in food technology. I can’t recall the doctor’s name now neither can I find his card but I do know he was hired later to the wildlife preservation projects in Mindoro and Palawan to breed in captivity the pilandok, Palawan Bearcat, tarsier, tamaraw, Philippine crocodile, Philippine Eagle (in Davao) among other species nearing extinction. A friend of ours even sold the doctor his VW Brasilia for use inside the Palawan farm.

He was then breeding huge cattles that produced tender meat, were less susceptible to disease, and feeds on locally available stuff. This was done in parallel with the other projects of Marcos such as Bt-corn, miracle rice, GM-tubers (potatoes). Marcos tapped the brightest minds during his time and many farmers now still benefit from them.

I still remember I was in a motorized banca with a Deputy Minister to inspect their farm tractors, which my company supplied, en route to their experimental farm in Caliraya Laguna when another banca with armed NPA soldiers stopped out boat in the middle of the lake. I thought it was an ambush because one of the men said “Si secretary yan”. The one I suppose was their leader then said, “Okay na po sir, magandang araw po”. In the farm, I saw the huge breed jay cynikho was referring to. (In fact, everything in the farm was huge, from fist sized calamansi to tilapia weighing more than a kilo each.)

It’s bad enough that Salvador Escudero is being wrongly blamed for importing these cattle (was it illegal, in the first place?), especially if it was impossible for him to influence a project under a different minister, never mind if it was ONLY Imelda Marcos’. What’s worse is that it is now also being used to discredit his son Chiz Escudero for a non-existent sin.

It’s pathetic logic in its worst!
