Last Tuesday, Mandirigma/Fearless Warrior posted the information that former Senators Tito Sotto and Tessie Oreta have left LDP President Edgardo Angara and have joined Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco’s Nationalist People’s Coalition.
Monday night I was talking with Oreta and she was telling me her disappointment about being left out in the list of of possible senatorial candidates of the opposition in favor of her nephew, Noynoy Aquino. She was critical of the selection process of UNO.
She and Sotto had long severed political ties with Angara. She had always been loyal to Estrada. There was never any mention of her talks with Danding Cojuangco.
That’s why I told Mandirigma/Fearless Warrior that it’s not true Sotto and Oreta are joining NPC.
Today, Sotto and Oreta took their oath with NPC.
I talked with her again and she confirmed she and Sotto have joined NPC because they have to belong to a party since they are no longer with LDP. She said she now expects the party to push for her inclusion in the senatorial slate.
I took it to mean it was the opposition senatorial slate because NPC has a policy of allowing their members freedom of choice. Chiz Escudero is with NPC and he is assured of a slot in UNO.
I was so surprised to watch Lynda Jumilla’s report in ABS-CBN’s TV Patrol that the two are being considered in the administration ticket. Indeed, because Cojuangco is Arroyo’s ally.

I tried to call her back but she is not available. Same thing with Sotto.
With the above new information that you posted Ka Ellen, I think I deserve an apology from you. Since you posted and mentioned my name on this thread, I would like you to admit that sometimes you tend to be judgmental like the rest. Deleting this and covering up your skin to protect your profession as a journalist which you claim you’ve been into for a long time don’t help.

I am always an advocate of a strong party system of government where individuals joined in as members or nominees for candidates in accordance to each ideologies, beliefs, programs of governance, principles or even to the extremes, one’s biases and prejudices.
Like the case of Sotto and Oreta, being known to be opposition personalities, but having dropped or have no room in the line up for them should have campaign for their fellow members, but instead jumped for the opportunity to run themselves. In a strong party system this scenario should not have happened, cuz the party interest is above that of personalities. And of course the other parties would prefer to endorse their own members and win the contest based on their programs and promises during the campaign and how they are going to go about implementing them. Not just empty promises and ‘ no expense spared’ as per Secretary Ermita style and of course a handsome return on investment for winners…

As for Sotto and Oreta, I thought they should have had more sense not to allow themselves to be used by the Bansot even when they join the NPC because of their friendship with Danding. Mahirap ang palipat-lipat ng partido sa totoo lang. Why can they not form their own party if they are that desperate to run and think that they can win without attaching themselves to someone with money. Kung talagang matalino at malinis sila, ipakita nila.

I had been patient and tolerant after realizing what I did to npongco, who went to the extent of “stalking” by tailing your posts, was quite harsh. That, after coming off from a similar situation in PCIJ, had me reining-in my cool.
But we can’t allow the same thing to happen here – the ranting and carping that achieves nothing but destroys the smooth flow of ideas. He has experienced firsthand how Anna can argue without letup with a similarly determined (and similarly witty) Jorge Bocobo or the many others, like you, yet the debate never gets diverted to the ad hominem personal lane.
He was aking for it, Anna gave it to him. Now, he hits hard at Ellen, in similar fashion as npongco, that I can’t take much longer. Not that it’s okay for him to bash Anna but I know she can handle it without anybody’s help (winks at Anna). Ditto for Ellen. I don’t mind if he calls me Prince Valiant as what Npongco or some dude in PCIJ did. I’d even be flattered. It’s just that I find it disgusting to see men trying to bully women.

Balimbingan time na naman! Traditionally, the incumbents usually win because they have the machinery and the money and the people to do the dirty work for them. After the candidates win, kanya kanyang banatan na. Irregardless, these candidates who are openly showing their color at the very beginning of a campaign are simply cutting their chances of winning. Any candidate in his right mind will not affiliate themselves with the administration. Maybe this is the first time ever that the incumbents wont win. If they do not cheat, Tiyanak’s candidates will not win, period!
Earlier I read an article about the superpowers’ hands in the upcoming elections. US is not the only superpower now, there is China, Russia etc. We will have a hybrid senate!
Interestingly, there was another article about Tiyanak’s trade pact with China. What benefit will China give the tiyanak? It will be the other way around, what benefits will the Philippines give China in this trade pact!
For those who wish to run under the Tiyanak’s party, good riddance! You will never win this time around. But if your intentions are to turn coat after the elections, this is exactly what the tiyanak deserves! Give it to her.
Going back to oreta and sotto, I would bet my bottom dollar especially on sotto’s case, that if they indeed run under gloria’s tiket to peryahan, sa kangkungan sila pupulutin. What happened with Tito Sotto and Tessie Aquino is a simple move of transfering from one party who’s not active to another party which is active. It’s does not necessarily mean that they are automatically joining the ticket of the administration. They resigned from LDP because LDP is no longer a potent force with Ed Angara as its president confirmed that he’s not running not even in the third force.
In joining the NPC, they are in a company with Chiz Escudero. Remember Chiz was Danding Cojuangco’s proxy in a wedding with gma making abresiete with him? It could be a another strategy the same stand as the LP and NP battng for their own candidates for inclusion in the senatiorial ticket. NPC will now have the bargaining power.
But just like in the past, there’s always nagtatampo if not selected. Lipat sa kabila. It will not surprise us if finally Tessie Oreta will do that. After all, her sister Lupita is with gma. Tito Sotto, I believe will not follow suit but if he does, it’s his ball game. Hayaan natin. Anyway, he was the nino bonito of gma before. But for me, it’s like a kiss of death for both of them. What is the main problem why we “whine” and criticize our goverment officials up to the President? Because we think that these people did not truly win and they cheated in the elections. So, who made these candidates win? First, it’s the people, the voting populace, who made them win the elections. And secondly, the entity that counts the votes of the people.
On the first element, it is hard to determine what a voter is in his mind when he is casting his/her vote in the polling place. Everything depends on his judgement and opinion about the candidate basing from the criteria he set forth as his standard for a good government servant. There is not much problem about this. The problem comes now if his/her vote is not counted by the very insitution of the government or society whose mandate is to uphold a honest, orderly, peaceful and transparent conduct of elections.
Ellen, I suggest something has to be done with the COMELEC through your column/blog and investigative reporting. First, the people, up to this time, is not aware of the actual exact number of voters in every town, city, province, district, region and for the whole nation. Second, the voters list is not updated despite acceptance of new registrants. Third, counting is still in the “stone-age” practice. Fourth, “disenfranchisement” of voters is still in existence during election day. Fifth, the COMELEC Commissioners are all politicians. Sixth, the COMELEC officials can be bribed depending on who is the “highest bidder”. Seventh, the military and the police should not be used in the conduct of elections in any capacity.

Just got a note from MLQ on this mess about Sotto and Oreta, who cannot remain with the Opposition and is running with the GMA ticket under the NPC while Chiz Escudero is running for the Opposition also under NPC, which is what Danding Cojuangco is all about—a sigurista!
But with or without Danding’s money, Escudero, I believe, has earned his keep for being consistent. I know for a fact that a group of veterans are voting for him because of the reputation of his grandfather, who never made it into Zaide’s history books, but according to interviews we made with WWII veterans, he was the organizer of the guerrilla movement in southern Luzon and the Visayas in WWII.
As one guerrilla said, “Kung tatakbo si Chiz Escudero para pangulo, iboboto namin siya!” Right now, tatakbo siya for Senator! Pihadong panalo siya!
Come to think of it, but the picture of Chiz Escudero in Inquirer with the Switik must have been a trick to give the impression that Chiz is likely to jump ship, too, ala-Sotto and Oreta. I think what is painful for warrior was for his comment or post to be called a rubbish. I was really shocked myself when i read it and especially coming from Ellen herself. There could have been a better way to state that his post was not welcome, but for anyone whose post to be described rubbish, i myself would also say ‘aray’.
