English major siya.

Nangyari na ito sa Germany, Scotland, Texas (US), and even in an Amish community school in Pennsylvania (US) kamakailan.

It was reported that Cho was taking anti-depressant. Almost everyone is already aware that this kind of medication leads to erratic behaviour and most often suicide of the taker. What about the parents, were they not aware that Cho was an emotionally disturbed young man?

Nakakalungkot!

Va. Tech gunman sent material to NBC

By MATT APUZZO, AP National Writer 3 minutes ago

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech gunman mailed a package of photographs, video and writings to NBC News in New York before he killed himself in the massacre that left 33 people dead, authorities said Wednesday. NBC said that a time stamp on the package indicated the material was mailed in the two-hour window between the first burst of gunfire in a high-rise dormitory and the second fusillade, at a classroom building.

The State of Virginia’s gun law requires gun buyers to go through a state-based criminal background check in addition to the federal NICS check. This is the best system since it includes checking both state and federal records to prevent criminals and other prohibited people from buying guns. In California, the 14-day waiting period for background checks failed to prevent Patrick Purdy, an insane career criminal who killed five children and wounded 29 others in Stockton, from purchasing the pistol he used to take his own life.

  8. chi chi

    Ka Diego,

Even with criminal background and federal NICS checks, purchase of guns is easiest to do in Virginia. Iyan nga ang pinag-uusapan kahit nandun pa kami some years back. In fact, most weapons authorities recovered in NY crime scenes were bought from VA.

    This one is from REUTERS…

Anti-gun campaigners in other countries where ownership is common expressed fears of a similar massacre.

Nandy Pacheco, head of the Philippines anti-gun lobby Gunless Society, said: “Not a day passes without a gun-related incident happening (in the Philippines). You hear it on radio, see it on TV and read it in newspapers.”

Shootings in the Philippines over trivial incidents are common. A few years ago several fatal karaoke bar shootouts were sparked by poor renditions of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way”.

Just recently as last week, our provincial government enacted a law to again put a limit on speech freedom by outlawing “internet bullying” where students using myspace and other accounts to bully and insults others including school authorities. This action was the results of the principal suspending students for bullying the school vice principal and others.

I believe this move is a right direction, because this bullying could progress into more serious development that could led students to radical and irrational actions if left unchecked. And the proper process to address school issues are also spelled out.

We have a very strict Gun Control law, but there are millions of firearms already in possession of millions of owners legally and illegally, and it won’t stop suicidal individuals to get one or break the law to commit the crime before taking their own.

  11. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

Pwe talaga!

  13. chi chi

    Yuko,

I don’t like baril. I shudder just by the sight of it. And when a sira ulo or irresponsible person got hold of a gun, siguradong may mababaril.

A day before the massacre happened, a student of my hubby committed suicide by standing on a railtrack. The conductor said that the train driver blew warnings several times when he saw the young man on the train’s path.

  14. I’m wondering, what could be in those environment that these unfortunate individuals live that contributed to their depression? It can’t be poverty because in poverty stricken countries like the philippines, Bangladesh, and other countries in africa, people fight for their lives.

  15. I remember several years ago when Toyota dumped Detroit’s Big Three and became the number one best selling car in the US. But I was scared as hell. In my school here in the US, I was never called Filipino. Either I am Cambodian, Laotian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean or Japanese pero ni minsan, hindi ako natawag na Pinoy.

What happened yesterday sends chills again sakin. I’ve warned all of my friends already, especially gathering nang mga asyano. Mahirap na.

They guy, from what they’re saying on TV right now, me sira pala and have been determined na baka daw chugihin nya sarili nya but for some reason nobody noticed the signs.

What could have brought these guys to be demons like those guys from Columbine? It’s tough here in America, everyone is busy working for a living. Everyone is working. Wala kaming maid to take care of the kids. Result? Karamihan sa mga bata dito, mga loner. This guy is a loner. I don’t know if there is some correlation. But who knows. Malungkot sa Amerika kahit mayaman sila. Bat’ ganun. Mahirap tayo, pero masaya.

Am sure, there’ll be some heated discussions again against the NRA dito.

When it was first announced that the alleged gunman was an Asian student, I shuddered with the thought na baka it’s a Filipino, huwag naman sana. My other concern was, magpipista na naman ang Filipino bashers in this blog. I wonder why there are people who are so happy on any bad things about the Philippines and the Filipinos. I understand that there are about 85 Filipinos studying at Virginia Tech and thank God, not one are among the fatalities.

Only last September 13, 2006, similar shooting incident happened here in Montreal’ Dawson College with 14 killed including the gunman. Reading of similar incidents in US and Canada, I haven’t heard or read of campus massacre in the Philippines in the same magnitude.

  17. chi chi

    Ellen,

If you go to http://www.msnbc.msn.com perhaps you’ll get some ideas why Cho was so troubled. This young man was full of rage and hate for the rich and women, plus yong mga photos, videos and recordings niya ay parang video game.

I can only offer answer to what happened to my hubby’s student. No drugs involved, his was a problem of parents divorcing. Mahina ang naturalesa. That suicide incident was also the first in the history of the school.

Aside from the campus massacre in Dawson College last September 13, 2006, there was also the so-called Montreal Massacre which occurred on December 6, 1989 at the École Polytechnique de Montréal. Twenty-five year-old Marc Lépine carried out a shooting rampage at the school, killing fourteen women and wounding four men and ten women before committing suicide. The incident led to more stringent gun control laws in Canada and has become a symbol of violence against women for the women’s movement. (Souce: Wikipedia)

  20. Reyna Elena,

Re “What happened yesterday sends chills again sakin. I’ve warned all of my friends already, especially gathering nang mga asyano. Mahirap na.”

Unbelievable… I remember the Japanese bashing epoch in the US. This was a typical American lynch mentality similar to the lynching of blacks as late as in the 60s.

I do hope Asian men in the US wouldn’t be targets of racial prejudice because of the Virginia Tech killings.

  21. Stats from UK’s The Independent…

    America and its guns

    * There are nearly 200 million privately owned firearms in the US

    * In 2004, there were nearly 11,000 homicides involving guns, according to the FBI

    * Total number of victims from firearm incidents was 477,000 in 2005

    * A British citizen is 50 times less likely to be a victim of gun homicide than an American * One third of firearms are handguns

    * 16 children and teenagers are killed by gun accidents in the US each day

    * Guns that are kept for self defence are 43 times more likely to be used to kill a friend or family member

    * Possessing a household gun increases the chance of suicide by five times.

    * Guns are used five times more often for self defence than for crime

    * 24 per cent of people who draw their guns actually fire them

    * 5,000 gun shows are held per year across the United States

Andrew Buncombe writing for The Independent in Blacksburg also writes:

Europeans have long failed to understand Americans’ “thing” with guns, their apparent obsession with owning firearms, the insistence that their constitution – written more than 200 years ago – gives them the God-given right to arm themselves to the teeth with the latest and most deadly weapons. What is it with this American exceptionalism, they ask. Why do they think different rules apply?

While the shooting at Blacksburg will reopen the gun control debate, at least locally there is anecdotal evidence that the shootings at Virginia Tech have led to an increase in the purchase of weapons by people buying them for self defence.

  22. sleeplessinmontreal sleeplessinmontreal

    Ma’m AdbBrux

I just watched a discussion in the local TV regarding tighter gun control. The pro-gun panelists are insisting that there is no evidence gun control reduces crimes and so forth and so on. According to them, in the US of A, there are more deaths due to road accidents compared to the gun-related deaths.

    Reyna Elena

I visited your blog. Wow, you’re being offered as partyleader of TOP. Pero kinunsulta ko ang Comelec list of official senatorial candidates, there’s no one there named Buenafe A. Brigss.

  23. Reyna Elena:

Once I was told by my lawyer to postpone a hearing regarding a case I filed in the SF court against some swindler who happened to be Filipinos. The court hearing was set on Dec. 7, but my lawyer asked for another date.

Cho showed many signs of instability. He was almost committed to a mental institution but later on released to an outpatient treatment. He stalked women, wrote disturbing stories about killing people but no one realized the gravity of his mental health. The easy access to gun ownership in Virginia also contributed to the situation. The privacy issues hampered the sharing of vital information on people in the US. This incident should be a wake up call not only to schools but other institutions as well to be on the look out for disturbing behavioural patterns of individuals in their midst. Be careful with over medication as well, this may lead to adverse effects on people. For parents, material wealth should not be the yardstick for success. Keep an eye on your siblings. Emotional health should be a priority by everyone.

“Pero kinunsulta ko ang Comelec list of official senatorial candidates, there’s no one there named Buenafe A. Brigss.” I’m glad you did. But that one site he I found lists him, baka nuisance candidate. I any case, I gave him what I promised kahit na wala akong kainte-interes with their platform whatsoever.

Honestly, ystakei, if am offerred a party leadership about Overseas Filipinos or COCOFED fighting for what the Coconut farmers deserve, then I’ll probably consider. But offering a pary leadership to me for a platform that surrenders the governance of the Philippines to the United States?! Ugh! Ga-patuka na lang ako sa ahas dong!

Also, in the area of discrimination? Tell me about it! Grabe dito in some part of the country!

  37. It is ironic that the shooter came from a country known as the Land of the Morning Calm, where crime using guns is rare. This shooter was really mentally sick. He reminds us of other mentally sick people who have no qualms in oppressing good innocent men, putting them in jails and letting their innocent wives and making children suffer.

Please note that although Canada ranks no. 8 as every one has the privilege of owning firearms for hunting and recreational purposes, but only Police Officers are authorized by law to carry firearms as weapons in performance of their duties. Soldiers are not, unless on training or on a mission. Border, Custom and Immigration Officers are unarmed. Anyone else carrying firearms in person other than hunting or target practice (firearms must be disabled during transport) are breaking the law or criminals.

But this strict Gun Control Law would not stop suicidal individuals like Cho, Mark Lepine and others to do what they had done. There will be more debates on this issue both sides of the borders, because we are experiencing a rash of illegal arms smuggling from the south, as we tightened our Firearms law the smugglers are making a killing(in making profit).

  42. vic vic

Ako rin BOB, member nang CSSA (Canadian Shooting Sports Ass.) the umbrella organization for all firearms sports including hunting. But our worries are lesser, because we have a very strict gun control law, that recently as five years ago, Long Arms (rifle and shotguns) are required to be registered and handguns shorter than 4″ barrel are now prohibited (easily hidden) since we are not allowed to carry guns in person, other than for hunting and target practice and transport permit are only for that, transporting firearms from place of safe storage (residence) to the place of activities.

But the number one victims of guns in our case are self-inflicted one, suicides. Much, much higher than all others combine…

Homicide 15%
    Accidents 4%
    Total 100%

  45. Vic: But this strict Gun Control Law would not stop suicidal individuals like Cho, Mark Lepine and others to do what they had done.

Yes, but at least, the victims will be fewer unlike when one is carrying a gun. At least, if he kills himself, he does not victimize anybody.

Years ago, there was also such mentally ill Japanese who went on a rampage at a station in Tokyo. He was not carrying a gun. He used a knife and a hammer. That’s why when I see someone walking and talking to himself, I make sure to stay away and keep a distance. Mahirap na baka biglang magwala kasi.

I have actually met a lot of these troubled lot in my work at the police and prison translating for people who have committed heinous crimes in Japan. It’s when I meet them that I do a lot of praying in fact. Look into their eyes and you see the devil there.

  46. Reyna Elena:

Hindi ko kilala iyan as I go for GO 11 + O and don’t care about the others. I don’t even bother look for the names of the others not in the Genuine Opposition lineup.

As for the partylist, I support Akbayan and GABRIELA, which is tying up with Migrante, the NGO that helps the OFWs especially where there is a concentration of Filipinos. A friend of mine supports the PEPC, which she assures me is not bogus contrary to what Etta Rosales says.

Yuko, I can not exactly recall, but there was an incident of gas poisoning by some crazy fellow (cultist) in the subway some years ago. And also Timothy McVeigh used regular farm fertilizer to blow up the federal building in Oklahoma.

I agree with you that stricter gun control or banning gun could have prevented the type of Virginia Tech massacre, but craze people will find other ways to do worse. I think detection of the root cause, and preventions are better solutions on the American settings because the American will never give their rights to bear arms.

  48. The devil, I guess, is busy working on the youth, the hopes of the fatherland/motherland. We are in fact having the same problems as in the US, UK, etc. regarding these kids who are suicidal and/or homicidal.

A lot many of these troubled kids even claim they hear voices that compel them do the things that they know to be wrong, and punishable even by a higher law.

A decade ago, a 14-year old boy decapitated an 11-year-old mentally ill kid, and sent letters to the police ridiculing the police for how they handled the other cases he was responsible for. He actually killed two and inflicted injuries on several others. Everybody thought it was the work of some deranged adult until someone told the police of his obsession for dacapitating cats, and when he was asked to come to the police station, he thought the police were arresting him and he blurted out that he was the murderer he was looking for. The fingerprints in the letters he sent matched his, and the police confirmed that he was indeed the murderer.

He claimed that he heard voices and was told to do the heinous things he did. The police did not attribute it to some devil possession and thought that he was just some crazy kid.

He was put in a juvenile prison, and has been released since. His father committed suicide in shame after his trial.

If the VT mass murderer had been Japanese, his parents would have committed suicide by now to amend for what he did.

  49. Vic,

The Subway Sarin Gas Poisoning was not carried out by one person. It was carried out by members of a cult headed by a swindler, who had been in jail before created his own cult, and having doctors, lawyers, etc. joining him in his campaign against the society that sent him previously to jail. Still, I won’t consider him insane although frankly speaking, a person who can commit a crime deliberately is for me crazy, for if one is normal, he wouldn’t want to commit a crime.

One must be crazy to have the guts to plan out hurting other people. Degre-degree lang nga.

At least, Cho killed himself. Otherwise, he cannot be sent to jail with his lawyer insisting on the state of his mind, and claim insanity.

  50. Problem with America, Vic, is that they have done too many amendments on their Constitution, etc. that instead of making things better they have actually caused a lot of people to get confused and be abusive.

  52. aftershox aftershox

I don’t think this tragic event has anything to do with gun laws. Someone determined to commit mass murder or even just one and then kill himself is not going to be deterred by any strict gun laws. Gun laws and more gun laws are not going to deter such people, they will either get it at the store or off the street or perhaps find other means of accomplishing his intentions – end result will be the same.

What concerns me now is the repeated airing of the video he sent to NBC. Further exposure of this video will push another deranged, lunatic, person out there to carry out another tragic event and perhaps attempt to beat the 30+ deaths. I wont be surprised if his vid on youtube.com already.

We have to commend our schools administrators in the Philippines for being security conscious. While others disdain seeing blue uniformed guards at the gate or doing rounds in the school premises, it minimized if not totally discarded hooliganism in the campus. What we can only read or hear from time to time are victims of hazing but none so far of campus massacre in the likes of Columbine, Virginia and two such incidents in Montreal.

    Reyna Elena

I was the one who wrote that Buenafe Briggs is not among the official senatorial candidates as listed by Comelec. I went to your blog when I read your reaction to a post na napakahaba but off topic.

Cho was described as a loner. I could just imagine what kind of life he had growing up. His parents were busy earning for the family in their business and probably he did not have any playmate. I suppose there are not many Koreans in that place. Fortunately with Filipinos, we have extended families- maraming titas at titos at lolos and lolas at nagkikita pag weekends. My nephew went to school in Queens where they live, for grade school and intermediate. Maraming siyang kaklase na Filipino. But in High School he went to a Jesuit School in Manhattan at sa umpisa pinagtatawan siya ng mga ilan sa escuela. They were a handful of Filipino kids at that school pero doon siya nagtapos. I offered to pay for the expenses for him to join a summer class in Europe pero he refused. Ang sabi- Auntie Rose, they are all puti. Up to this day, I have not met a “puti friend” of his. Ang barkada niya ay mga Philam kids. I don’t know if the Korean community has this. Thank God for the Filipino values. The following year I took him home to experience Christmas in the Phil. He enjoyed his three weeks stay at ang laging tanong niya ngayon ay “when are we going home?” It was just too bad we did not go home to Antique at that time.

  58. Rose,

Orientals are a clannish lot, but this Cho must have kept away even from the Koreans, and most likely he was possessed by devil.

I can relate to Cho’s experience of racial discrimination, though. I had the same traumatic experience when we immigrated to the US, and reason why I left and settled in Japan. My mother herself had developed some inferiority complex because of her Ilocano accent. Americans would taunt her by keeping on saying “What? What?” everytime she spoke. Sabi ko na lang sa kaniya, “Don’t worry, Mother, the British say the Americans have murdered their language!”

  59. @ystakei and sleepless in montreal,

(thanks nga pala sleepless) on buenafe briggs, ok lang yon, i think my readers were able to dig up some news and was able to help me. he’s on my site galit na galit sa mga readers ko! he he he! and he’s still inviting me to join them. HA HA HA! PWEDE BA?! as i have said, how could someone invite you to join your party when what you believe is counter to what they believe?!

    @aftershox,

much as I would like to agree with you, but I can’t seem to comprehend that strict gun laws here in America is not supposed to make those guns land in the hands of these kids! no offense, but that alone makes it a gun law issue!

Actually, I was very mad as well this morning. It’s on the Philadelhia Daily News, he was brandishing a gun, just how could this print media sensationalize a demon like this just for money?! There’s backlash on the media already for capitalizing on these pictures. They just don’t learn. I can’t believe these US media are just cold bloodied and insensitive to those who lost 32 innocent students!

  60. sleeplessinmontreal sleeplessinmontreal

    Reyna Elena

It’s a good thing to inform you that the two major nespapers here in Montreal didn’t carry in their front page about the Virginia Tech. It’s buried in page 8 or so. Broadcasts on the incident is already toned down and the menacing pictures of Cho not shown anymore.

  61. Sensationalism is what sells a newspaper, Reyna Elena. Point is such sensationalism in fact has been somehow a factor why there are lots of copycats who want to see their names in print even the wrong way.

I can’t understand that mentality, too. I was once upon a time working as a special correspondent in the Philippines, but when an editor tried to change my story to make it more sensational and put me in a some precarious situation for the same of sensationalizing my expose the wrong way, I said , “No!” and then quit. Anyway, I had other means of making money for my keeps.

  62. America is paying for all wrong policies they have implemented there based on their wrong interpretation of their laws.

In fact, a leader of our church even prophesied America’s doom if Americans go the way they have been doing as sensationalized in Hollywood movies. Sodom and Gomorrah is more like it.

  63. @ sleepless, ystakei and tita ellen,

Nagwawala yong Senate Candidate sa site ko! His name pala is BRIGIDO, pinalitan daw nya nang “Briggs” because the Americans cannot pronounce his name, according to him!

  64. sleeplessinmontreal sleeplessinmontreal

    Reyna Elena

I enjoyed reading entries in your blog. It appears Briggs was among the nuisance candidates whose name was scrapped that’s why I wrote here that there’s no one by his name as released by Comelec. The way he reacted sa mga comments, he can’t be a politician. Sa umpisa pa lamang, pikon na. If he will ever post here, I think puputaktihin siya.

  65. @sleepless,

you should have read yong tirade nya saakin. he compared himself to Mahatma Gandhi and to Martin Luther King. Can you imagine? Hirap kausapin si Brigido. Although I was thankful sa invite to be their party leader, kaso mo, I don’t believe dun sa LATAporma nya. Filipinos are probably the most nationalistic people in the world, di ba? So, meaning, there’s something wrong with his product “agenda”. Why would you sell an idea na maging State nang United States and Pilipinas na yong mga kausap mo eh super-makabayan. It doesn’t go along di ba?

  66. sleeplessinmontreal sleeplessinmontreal

    Reyna Elena

Sure I read all those. Binanggit pa niya si Rizal. Ibang klase rin, it takes all kinds.

CNN is without letup broadcasting the Virginia Tech Massacre and everybody in the household agree that we observe moratorium in watching the channel. Nakakasawa na rin. It’s almost 1am here and I’m going to sleep na.

  67. @sleepless,

Tulog na rin ako. It’s 12:33 na and i;m tired watching this news na puro insulto daw yata inabot ni Cho sa school, but there there the mental twist, i don’t know what to believe.

  71. Nelbar,

Cunanan did not go on a rampage. Cho did, and that makes a big difference. Cho was an immigrant, Cunanan was a natural-born American. I doubt if he was a victim of racial discrimination that I guess Cho felt he was subjected to, for he must have not spoken English when he first came to the US, and for an unstable child, such treatment can be doubly traumatic.

  72. @ystakei,

regarding BRIHIDO, I don’t for a minute believe your sinulat nya na americans cannot pronouce his last name kaya pinalitan nang briggs! nyeta! akala ko tuloy mestizo! aboridyinis pala!

although i like the bridgette! he he he

  73. naku if you guys are just here in Philadelphia, I was driving this morning to work at nangga-galaiti ako sa isang radio station here because pinag-mumukhaan na why is it that the US government are bringing these sick immigrants sa US para daw sirain ang society nila! he’s blaming the immigration yon ang sabi!

i very angry at the statement dahil behind his reasoning about blaming immigration mukhang me racist twist yong statement nya!

and no one would even discuss that school bullying is a real problem here in america and no one seems to even address the issue seriously.

truth of the matter is, and this is based on my very own scientific findings, base sa sarili kong research na ginastahan ko nang isang sigarilyo and one cup of dunkin donuts coupled with statistical sampling sa neighborhood naming dysfunctional din yong katabi namin. here’s the result of my impirical studies: there is something morbidly (sobra ba ginamit kong word?) wrong with american culture. a lot of the kids here don’t even have any darn respect sa parents nila and they believe their teachers more! in my own turd world kawntri, the flippines, the only thing that we worry is – nagpaalam ba ang mga bata na lalabas sila at maglalaro? that is, we let our kids be kids and their only role is to play, magpaalam lang kung saan pupunta.

  74. Kalog ka talaga, Reyna Elena. I know someone called “Cely” but Americans would pronounce her nickname “Sili” as in “siling labuyo” so what she did was add one more “l” to her nickname to help the Americans pronounce her name right. Bulol kasi ang mga ungas! Hinalong kalamay kasi ang mga lahi.

Sa totoo lang hindi naman mahirap i-pronounce ang ingles that can even be pronounced as spelled like what many English I met in UK do as when they pronounce hat as in Tagalog “hat” not “het”to mean “sombrero” and “hot” as “hot” not “hat” to mean “mainit.” ‘Taragis talaga!

  75. Reyna Elena: there is something morbidly (sobra ba ginamit kong word?) wrong with american culture.
    *****

Bata pa ang republika nila and I doubt if they have really developed a culture worth adopting. Hollywood culture meron sila, and look at how they have destroyed other cultures too with its truly bad influence!

  76. Iyong anak kong binata kasing edad ni Cho. When he was younger, I sent him to my mother to try living there prior to enrolling him into a US high school.

Last visit niya doon ay noong 2001.

  77. parasabayan parasabayan

Reyna Elena, you are absolutely right, there is something missing in the American culture in raising their children the American way. They even call their parents by their first names. Children in the US can not be disciplined harshly. Parents can be jailed for this. Children can divorce their parents. In public schools there are always debates on whether “God” should be included in their daily lives. The 10-15% atheist always make this a big issue. So, kids in school are not taught the very basic religious values which we as Filipinos have. I am very glad that in my immediate family and friends, I can see our values in tact. Our children are taught the right values. Majority of my niece and nephews graduate from big universities( UC Berkeley, UCLA, USC and the like). Only a few( very negligible number) are short of the high expectations. Many of these kids are even American born but they attend mass on Sundays and they even know how to pray the rosary. I know it because when I travelled to Rome I bought each of them one and I see them use these.

I can not be onion skinned on allegations that immigrants are causing trouble in the US. Americans have more problems with incest, rape, serial killing and a lot of other horrible crimes.

The cases immigrants are involved in are only a handful. So, to this commentator who is so ignorant and racist, I would say “Hey buddy, know your facts first before you open your mouth” and that would be it! Ignorance is lethal. I would not lose any sleep on this. I heard more insults on our country being a low class most corrupt country in Asia. The latter bothers me more because it is absolutely true these days. My only answer is always, “it is going to be better”. I hope we can start the process of improving our country with voting the right candidates in the May elections.

  78. Sorry, this should read, “…I sent him to my mother’s…”

  79. Funny, parasabayan, but even the native Indians came from somewhere although they went there long before the Europeans made the USA penal colonies before they established a republic there some 200 or more years ago. Remember the movie, “The Barbarian and the Geisha”? That was how the Japanese looked at these barbarians when they first stepped foot on the Japanese islands, and blew their noses with their cotton hankies while the Japanese were already using tissue papers to wipe their sipon!

If you are not white, you are an immigrant? I have nieces and nephews, too, in the US and they have never been to the Philippines, the land of their fathers, and they call themselves “Fil-Ams” except for one autistic nephew who refuses to acknowledge himself as being part Filipino!
