Spokesman of the Genuine Opposition
The following article appeared in today’s issue of the The Daily Tribune. Tamano holds Master of Laws from Harvard, Juris Doctor at the Ateneo de Manila and a Master of Public Administration, UP
Last Saturday, while in conference with Sen. Serge Osmeña and RC Constantino, the Genuine Opposition campaign managers, at the former headquarters of the GO at Manilabank in Makati City, I had a bittersweet realization: GO was now officially dead. No, this has nothing to do with the fight for the Senate presidency that has been thoroughly discussed in the media as the sign of the demise of the GO. It had everything to do with the completion of the GO’s objective as a political organization and a coalition.
The GO was not, in the strict sense, a political party, meaning that it could be registered with the Comelec and would be eligible for consideration as a dominant minority or majority party. It was a coalition of numerous political parties such as the UNO, LP, NPC, etc., which had a simple objective. In a nutshell, our main goal as a both a coalition and a political organization was to get as many of our senatorial candidates as possible, elected in order to protect the independence of the Senate and allow it to remain a watchdog and check and balance against corruption, whether it be the executive, legislative, or judicial kind.
Despite the seemingly limitless resources of Team Unity (TU) and its — or its cohorts — attempts at cheating, the GO did what most people thought impossible: an almost complete defeat of the GMA administration candidates. Obviously, this feat could not have been accomplished without the support of the public and the invaluable help of election watchdogs such as Lente, PPCRV, the party-list groups, etc. In fact, only two TU members (Arroyo and Angara who, by the way, are not authentic administration stalwarts) were able to get elected. Of course, we still have the Migz vs. Koko debacle but that is, again, another story. To all those who supported us, allow us now to offer our deepest gratitude.
With the job accomplished, the coalition has become superfluous. This is the reason that the Manilabank office that I went to last Saturday, which used to be a hotbed of activity — with our staff, the candidates and their campaign teams, the press, supporters, and kibitzers interacting, often boisterously — was now, for the most part, quiet and still.
Does the death of the GO as a political organization mean that the GO candidates may now turn their backs on their campaign promises to fight corruption and be a check and balance to the enormous powers of the Executive? No. Or more accurately, the answer is “no” if the GO candidates want to have a future in politics. The mandate that was given to the GO candidates had a simple premise: that once elected, our candidates had to be true oppositionists, hence the descriptive term “genuine.”
Translated into concrete action, being a true oppositionist, would mean they would hold the government accountable for its misgovernance, conduct investigations — regardless whether those who would be subjected to the inquiry are powerful, rich, or influential — of those involved in government scams that took away money that the state could use to help the poor, and enact legislation that would protect free speech, such as the decriminalization of journalistic libel.
As shown by the 2007 elections, our voters are much more savvy, informed and discerning. They will hold elected officials accountable and their memories are not as short or as forgiving as before. Stated otherwise, the GO senators should be put on notice that if they fail to live up to their promises to the public, then they will have nothing but defeat to reap in the 2010 and future elections.
So as long as the GO senators live up to this mandate, then although GO as a campaign organization may no longer exist, the ideals of the GO, as expressed and articulated throughout the campaign, continue.
During my stint as GO spokesman, I believed that our ideals were simple and basic and that they were founded on a belief that public office was a public trust and in the discharge of that trust public officials, and the government in general, had to be accountable, transparent and responsive to the needs of the people.
Ultimately, after the heat of the elections has died down and the histrionics, vitriol and rhetoric have ended, it will be performance that will count. Will the opposition senators do the investigations that the public is clamoring for such as inquiries into the Joc-Joc Bolante scam or “Hello Garci?” Will they come up with good legislation? Will they refuse bribes? One of the reasons the electorate overwhelmingly supported the GO senatorial candidates was that they agreed with their ideals of accountability, transparency and responsiveness. If the GO senators live out these ideals, on a daily basis, as shown by their performance in the Senate, then the spirit of the GO, despite the death of the political organization, lives on.
Just as I thought , politics has already devolved back into nature, each bird trying to reach the lead of the V-flight.

Genuine Opposition ideals of accountability, transparency and responsiveness becomes extinct. Senators Villar, Cayetano and Escudero had exploited “GO ideals” as their vehicle to political victory. The Filipino electorate wants real fiscalizers not Moro-Moro actors.
There’s no doubt that Adel Tamano did an excellent job and ran rings around the TU spokesmen and explained how GO viewed things Genuinely clearly and positive by telling the truth as a way of obtaining justice.
There’s a BUT, a big but in that Senators Villar, Cayetano & Escudero can only be Genuine if they stay within their stance that they took to obtain the vote of the people who placed them in the Senate to straighten this crooked administration.
Yes, they should have no doubt that they were voted in for the sole reason that they said they would straighten this crooked administration. At different times before they, all three warned Arroyo that the people were watching her and here was a penalty to pay in the not too distant future. They all three of them seem to believe that the people who voted them into the Senate are no longer watching them, but they are wrong, they too will also pay a penaty in the future for not staying Genuine.
If the people of this country wanted administration senators they would have voted Team Unity to get it but they didn’t, did they! Manny, Alan & Chiz, you know what you are doing is selfish and a wrong to the people of this country. Be men enough to think of the people and country not just for your own selfish agenda.
Galit pa rin si Manong Diego. Ako, medyo nahimasmasan na ng konti nitong sinabi ni Adel (sigh). Mahirap kasi, itong mga dating madaldal, pagkatapos bumitiw sa real opposition bloc, ayaw na magsalita.
But I still need to be convinced by their actual performances. Magbabantay pa rin ako at sisiguraduhin ko, huwag kayong magkakamaling humimod sa tumbong ni Pandak, kundi goodbye na sa inyo!

I can only think that all three of theses senators believe that they have already proved themselves to the electorate but the truth is that they have yetto prove to the electorate that they can produce what they promised to do.
Do they honestly believe that these other remaining Genguine Senators are not capable of producing the results they promised the electorate who voted for Genuine Opposition.
Kahit anong sabihin nila, parang nakaloko pa rin sila. These crooks tricked the voters that they shared the feelings and sentiments of majority of Filipinos (90 percent of them as a matter of fact) and that they were indeed running under a new coalition of supposedly enlightened politicians, old and new, to make sure that the unano is out of office before the end of this year by hook or by crook.
Not a Philippine voter, this is in fact was my impression when the United Opposition was established, but when I was reading their platform, etc. and the inclusion of the crooks, the adulterers, etc. in their group, I could not help but have my doubts. Nevertheless, despite my doubts that it would be the same kind of set-up as they had when FPJ ran with another bunch of questionable trapos, I went with supporting the group with that typical Filipino “Bahala na attitude” especially when finally Trillanes was included there, and my staff and barkada pledge to support and help campaign for him.
Ang masakit iyong panloloko nina Escudero and Cayetano, huwag na si Jinggoy kasi hindi naman siya kasama sa GO, which he can claim as a matter of fact. Iyong dalawang iyan ang nadenggoy tayong lahat. Let us not forget that. Next time, the best thing really is scrutinize all those candidates regardless of whether they are in groups to be organized by Binay, et al (but not one conniving with the criminal at the palace by the murky river and her cohorts) and see if they are the traditional politicians. Katwiran ko, anybody willing and eager beaver to connive with Mrs. Pidal must be one in her league, for no person in his right frame of mind, love of God and country, or even just a little scrupple can and would want to work with her because she is plain and simple, a criminal. Anybody who loves God, truth and justice should have nothing in his/her heart but to remove her and put her in jail where se belongs.
Now, I feel sorry that I did not campaign for the three kapatiran candidates! I should have listened to my friend.
Re the Koko and Migz debacle, what do Adel Tamano and Company plan to do about it. Abandon ship na ba sila? Ang sagwa naman! No wonder nawawalan na ng gana si Koko. Hence, the need to call on the 90 percent Filipinos who helped GO to help Koko, too, versus this wannabe menace who wants to be Senator even on tampered votes. Bakit papayagan manalo ang walanghiyang iyan alam naman ng lahat na daya ang boto niyan?
Gosh, dito iyan pinaghuhuhuli na ng mga pulis ang mga walanghiyang iyan!

Bottom line, We now know that they are not loyal. They are selfish. At least now they’ve done us a favor of making it clear that they doesn’t care about the Filipino people or the will of the voters,or any of those trivial things. They care about themselves.Amen,Jesus!

A problem of any kind should be talked out, decision made and action taken. Thats how successful countries are governed.
Is it habit of culture that it seems that any problem confronting our politicians is talked about but then repeatedly talked about even though there are ideas made on how to realise a correction to the particular problem, this includes politicians & politics.
If this is habit or culture it needs to be stopped now! We require Action on the countries lack of governamce problems right now not tomorrow. The Koko v Migz debacle included.
I’m just listening to ABS-CBN where the Comelec spokesman is putting over their view that the Commissioners are the best thing since sliced bread. It’s about time that the electorate’s opinion is that they are acting corruptly and seen as being devoid of all credibility. In short the public would like to see the Comelec disbanded in totality.

Maybe we can equate the mentality of the actions of Senators Villar, Cayetano & Escudero as the well documented ‘Crab Mentality’. They should remember that there are other stroger crabs in Congress that will undo them before 2010!
Senators Villar, Cayetano & Escudero will be starting the 14th Congress as enemies of the people and when the time comes that they look for support from the same people these senators will feel the heat – but not support of the people.
I read that Alan Cayetano called Ellen, but I’m also aware that I have not seen them explaining themselves on the television political shows to explain their actions.

At least, Tamano is not talking about going into politics in 2010. I won’t encourage him as a matter of fact to make statements now kasi baka madawit siya sa kasalanan ni Escudero at Cayetano knowing how close he is to them or so was the impression doon sa mga pre-election pictures nila.
Note that I don’t touch Villar kasi para sa akin dapat nakita na ang sungay ng taong iyan noon pa. Duda na ako diyan noon pa.
At least, iyong Kiko sa sobrang yabang umalis sa GO maaga pa lang. Kumampi man siya kay Gloria bistado na siya. Still nakinabang din ang ungas sa Opposition because people believed that he was running independent because he wanted to lick the unano out, pero hindi pala.
Ang gusto ni unano masira si Lacson dahil sa presidential ambition niya. Si Trillanes takot si unano dahil desidido si Trillanes na tanggalin siya! That I support wholeheartedly, and so do majority of Filipinos now.

While we saw the death of the GO which stands for Genuine Opportunists, we are seeing a rebirth of a genuine lawmaker in the person of Sen. Trillanes who is silently doing his job attending to his campaign promises.
In a news report, newly elected Senator Antonio F. Trillanes IV has filed two bills in the Senate seeking to boost the soldiers’ welfare and their families’ living conditions. The bills, Senate Bill Nos. 751 and 752, provide for an increase in combat duty pay and subsistence allowance, respectively, of all officers and enlisted personnel of the AFP and ensure that funds for the increases are made available in the national budget.
“Professionalism in the armed forces and adequate remuneration and benefits of its members shall be a prime concern of the state,” said Trillanes, quoting Section 5, Article XVI of the Constitution, in explaining the two legislative proposals.

The twin bills filed by Sen. Trillanes will certainly boost the morale of the AFP officers and enlisted personnel. At present, the combat duty pay of military personnel is only P240 a month. According to Sen. Trillanes, the amount hardly serves as an incentive for soldiers, who are subjected to risks and perils when they put their lives on the line to protect our people, our institutions and our democratic way of life. He added the soldiers’ combat duty pay was last increased in 1985. Imagine, panahon pa ni Marcos.
The other bill, SB 752, seeks to increase the subsistence allowance of military personnel from the present P60 per day to P150 per day, or by P90. But you know what? Gloria Arroyo, apparently tipped off of Sen. Trillanes filed bills, made an announcement that she’s ordering an increase of P30 in the daily subsistence allowance of soldiers. Gusto na namang ibandera ang kanyang kunyaring magnanimity pero lumalabas, mas mataas pa rin ang panukala ni Sen. Trillanes.
With Sen. Trillanes around seriously attending to his legislative duties even behind bars, who needs these genuine opportunists in the likes of Villar, Escudero and Cayetano?

Akala siguro ni Mr. Manny, palaging masisilaw sa kanyang salapi ang isipan ng sambayanan. Ang akala siguro ni Mr. Manny, madaling ayusin ang mga bagay-bagay sapagkat ang paniwala niya, Money Talks. May isang pilipina dito who got a stroke last Saturday. Binigyan ng mga doktor ng dalawang araw na limit. Kung mabuhay siya, vegetable ang labas sabi ng doctor. Her friends did not know what to pray. Sabi namin just leave it to God.
This morning she died, but I had thought about her since I learned of her stroke. Akala niya wala nang katapusan, but apparently she was wrong. And it made me to think of how men in their greed waste time trying to seek for the riches of this world, and very little of what God really wants for them to do for even just their own salvation.
Frankly, it gave me hope that all these evil deeds by the criminal enjoying her spoils at the palace by the murky river will soon end—depending on how much the Filipinos have learned their lesson perhaps.
No need to listen to some crazy advice. Filipinos should do what their conscience tells them to do, and what is definitely right—kick out the crooks Now!!!

It is too early, but we already see political butterflies. We just hope you will be able to redeem yourselves in the future.
Whether he is allowed to serve as senator or kept in the dungeons of Gen. Hermogenes Esperon, Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV is already a success for standing up bravely for his beliefs and for keeping his words and commitments. When the going gets tough, public servants reveal what they are truly made of.
Who cares about Senators Miriam Defensor-Santiago, Lito Lapid, Juan Ponce Enrile and a host of turncoats like Vicente Sotto and Teresa Oreta? They pale in comparison to former Senators Raul Roco, Jovito Salonga and Teofisto Guingona.
Citizens have done their part and negated the much-vaunted command votes of Malacañang. They will remember Escudero and Cayetano as ingrates, who turned against the wishes of the people who gave their mandate as senators.
According to Juan Ponce Enrile whilst being interviewed on Strictly Politics he claimed that there had been meetings with Cayetano & Escudero before June 14th when they already knew that they would be joining forces with the senators of the administration.
What happened to the preaching of transparency we heard so much from Cayetano & Escudero. The electorate will never trust them again, once bitten twice shy.

Miriam Santiago in her effort to be in the news at para mapagusapan has been targeting Sen. Trillanes in saying that like Jalosjos, he can’t attend the Senate session and other activities. For all we know, Jalosjos story is miles apart from Sen. Trillanes. He was in incumbent congressman when he was accused and found guilty of statutory rape. He had money and organization to back up his reelection bid while in prison because his case was on appeal. When finally found guilty, he was stripped of his title as a congressman.
On one hand, Sen. Trillanes, case is still on pre-trial for the last four years he’s behind bars but the presumption of innocence is still with him. His case involves political offense while Jalosjos was a convicted felon, a criminal because his case involved a criminal offense. And there lies the difference which Sen. Santiago who claimed to be a know it all on legal matters failed to see or don’t want to see being true to her new calling as a sipsip numero uno kay Gloria Arroyo.
It will be interesting to note that the administration senators really would not want Sen. Trillanes to be attending the Senate session because he will be the center of attention and every action he will make will be in the news. Matatabunan silang lahat. They may be singing a chorus in defending the corrupt administration of Gloria while in the Senate hall but outside, the man in the streets, those who are in the far flung areas, they will be rooting for Sen. Trillanes.
Likewise, the GO elected but turncoat senators will not be spared by the venom of Sen. Trillanes words. It appears that this early, they are conniving with the administration to forestall the appearance of Sen. Trillanes in the Senate. But the people will be watching. They know them, they will remember their names, those who have not learned the lesson of the Trillanes Phenomenon. Villar, Cayetano, Escudero, markado na ang pangalan ninyo.

Voters often become much stronger emotionally, they want revenge, although they will experience bumps and turbulence, they do not give in to paralyzing feelings of guilt and hopelessness, instead they are much rejoicing to see hunyangos change colors as early. The hunyangos are now digging their own grave. Their political careers are terminally ill, within a certain short period of time and in 2010,the executioner which the voters will sign their death warrants. Pero siguro kung talagang wala nang pagpipilian kasi kung kay Garcillano lang naman ay di hamak namang OK si John Osmena o si Nikki Coseteng! But the fact remains that Escudero and Cayetano won because voters thought they were genuine oppositionists not opportunists!
Innggit lang talaga sila kay Sonny Trillanes because he is making a dent in this helplessly corruption ridden government of the criminal. Kaya di dapat na makaupo si Zubiri. Madadagdagan pa ng isa pang kurakot! Yuck!
I don’t believe Escudero and Cayetano joined the administration bloc because they are traitors. I know they are cooking something. Don’t panic folks, wait for the surprise…..these two young and brave gentlemen will remain good and defenders of the Pilipinos…….stay calm…just sit back and relax………
No goldenlion, we can’t just sit back and relax and wait for these two young men to do what is comfortable for them. They have responsibilities to the people, who like you, trusted them with the future of the Republic.
They’re now silent, and whatever little came out of the “babe mouths” are not acceptable to the majority of pinoys who voted for them.
We need more assurance and actions from them, like Trillanes is doing. Bakit sila puro SILENCIO?!
