57 killed, 42 hurt in Sulu clashes

These numbers are persons. Tao. Human beings. Filipinos.
What has Gloria Arroyo done to this country?

Update: 25 more killed- biggest casualty in a day

Three days of fighting between government forces and al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf militants in the southern island province of Sulu has left 57 combatants killed and 42 others wounded, a military spokesman said Friday.

A nine-year-old boy was killed in one of four engagements. He was caught in the crossfire when Abu Sayyaf members, assisted by rogue Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) rebels, ambushed Army troopers in Maimbung town on Thursday morning, said Lieutenant Colonel Bartolome Bacarro.

A total of 26 soldiers and 31 Abu Sayyaf members were killed, while 17 soldiers and 25 Abu Sayyaf bandits were hurt in the four incidents, Bacarro told reporters in Camp Aguinaldo.

The remains of only one Abu Sayyaf member was recovered, but “validated intelligence reports” point to more casualties, Bacarro said, adding troops were verifying reports that two sub-commanders were among the fatalities.

There were no reports of new clashes Friday.

Bacarro said two Army battalions would be sent to reinforce troops in Sulu, bringing to roughly 4,000 the number of forces running after over 200 extremists, who are allegedly hiding two Jemaah Islamiyah bomb experts who allegedly masterminded the 2002 Bali bombings, Umar Patek, and Dulmatin.

On Thursday, 25 soldiers from the 33rd Infantry Battalion were killed, 10 in the Thursday morning ambush, and 15 others in an armed engagement also in Maimbung on Thursday afternoon.

It was the biggest single day casualty for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in recent years, Bacarro said.

“As to the efforts against the ASG [Abu Sayyaf group], this will not slacken. We will continue looking for them, hunting them down,” Bacarro said.

Bacarro said the reinforcements would bring to 4,000 the strength of forces running after over 200 Abu Sayyaf bandits in Sulu.

The 33rd IB, which figured in the two engagements on Thursday, would be recalled and replaced by another Army battalion.

Bacarro belied observations that the heavy military casualties and the Thursday morning ambush in Maimbung indicated the Abu Sayyaf is on the offensive.

“Three of the offensives are government-initiated. We are the ones on the offensive,” he said.

Army troops scoured the towns of Maimbung, Parang, and Indanan after receiving intelligence reports that Abu Sayyaf commanders Radullan Sahiron, Albader Parad, Doc Abu, and Jul Aspi were hiding in the area, Bacarro said.

The first encounter was reported in Indanan town last Tuesday when two Marines were wounded after a Marine platoon encountered some 50 Abu Sayyaf fighters, the spokesman said.

On Wednesday, a soldier from the Army’s 33rd Infantry Battalion was killed while five others were hurt in an encounter with some 40 fighters in Parang town.

Then came the Thursday morning ambush in Maimbung, in which nine soldiers were killed on the spot and two wounded. One of the wounded troopers died later at the hospital, he said.

Later that day, troops from the 33rd IB battled a 120-strong band composed of Abu Sayyaf fighters, rogue MNLF members and lawless elements that left 15 soldiers killed and nine wounded, he said.

Asked about the MNLF presence in the encounter sites, Bacarro said: “These are rogue MNLF groups. We can say that even before, there are reports of collusion [between the Abu Sayyaf and rogue MNLF elements].”

The MNLF has confirmed that its men were involved in the clashes, but said it was an offshoot of an earlier military attack that killed a high-ranking leader and three others.

He also refused to link the Sulu pursuit to the hunt for the killers of 14 Marines in the neighboring island province of Basilan.

“It’s too early to say…We are taking these as two different theaters,” Bacarro said.

The suspects in the killings of the 14 Marines, 10 of whom were beheaded, include Abu Sayyaf bandits and separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels

reply : if the government forces according to Bacarro is on the offensive, why is it that they got almost the same number of casualties with that of the rebels? according to reports, there were 26 casualties on the government side and 31 on the rebels, and at least 10 soldiers were wounded. considering the ratio of troops between the government and abussayaf, 26 casualties in just a single day of engagement is amazing !

    Ak-47,

Since Assperon assumed as csafp, the results of combat operation are really amazing and disastrous to our soldiers.

By the way, the island commander of Jolo is Gen Rafael. He was the former camp commander of Fort bonifacio when Lt San Juan et al escaped from detention. He was relieved by Assperon then but later promoted to Major General. That’s Assperon’s worthy generals. Truly amazing!

Are we seeing another Afghanistan in the making? The most alarming part of this battle is not between the government troops and rebels; but the unseen hand or hands. Yes, foreign elements are involved.

  4. parasabayan parasabayan

Truly amazing! Asspweron at his best! If he does not incarcerate his top officials, he gets his men killed!

I agree that I can see foreign hands here. The US forces are supposed to be on hand and the Malaysian government is there as well. What else can happen? Who else is behind this outbreak?

Maybe Gokusen can tell us the different factions in this war zone!

  5. goji goji

Gokusen is a local hand not foreign hand so I doubt if he knows anything. Get it?

Parasabayan: At first I was wondering why you mentioned Malaysian gov’t..now I get it..hindi ba malapit ang Malaysia sa Mindanao?..and for a time there was this question of the claim on Sabah? Financial investment or an independent Mindanao to be part of Malaysia? Mabilis ang kumpit..at mahusay magsisid ang mga tao sa Mindanao..nakipaglaro ata si pang gulo sa mga ito..for herself but certainly not for the country..That’s what it seems to me..Malaking kuarta..malaking kahon na puno ng kuarta..G.. not as in gloria but Greed.

It will be amazing for us if these highly idiots commanders(COLS. & above show)that be on the front line leading and facing the enemies with their capaign medals, ribbons and commendations kuno, take a look at them when they are in Gala attire it seems they engages in so many battles. We spent so many hundreds of thousand,to send them abroad and locally to gained and acquired some knowledges of tactics and stragetic fighting guerrilla warfare in rural and urban engagements.Thsee ridicules the entire outfit of AFP,25 in a single day, with the numbers of opponents are 1:20,20 for AFP,1 for abus,AFP got some edges on weapons, airsupport, you name it they got it,but the trouble they can get accounted for it,while your opponents are relying only rag-tag armies, probably their brains are more advance in art of fighting and ability to succumb everyone to they final resting place. The lives of our gallantry men depend on their unit commanders wether it is batallions or company from direction order, but if incompentencies been applied on those orders, gallantry will become history only w/o success.

I doubt they even got the enemy casualty numbers right. I heard on radio yesterday morning it was 25 dead AFP against 27 on the Abu-MNLF side but our soldiers can only account for five enemy bodies.

  10. vic vic

Here we have a superior numerical troops hunting more or less 300 “terrorists” and they seem to be on the defensive, getting ambushed instead. Is this the lack of training or lack of leadership or lack of motivation? Just like the Commander bragging she can do this and that, still has to prove herself on anyone of them. For the sake of the Marines and the fighting soldiers, may this one would not be the one of her monumental failures..

  11. chi chi

A 9 year- old boy was killed in a crossfire again! &*^^%%$#

And the **&&^tanging-ina ng bayan is “concerned” about this war! How many more children will be caught in a crossfire, and how many more soldiers and civilians will die in Gloria’s name?!

The fact is that Gloria doesn’t know what to do and cannot command her cheat-of staff but too scared to let go of her stolen throne for she might end up in prison or decapitated, too, by her own trusted personnel.

Pakawalan ninyo sina Col.

Life is too precious to lose in a battle like this in the name of fake Gloria and supot Asspweron. Walang katuturan na pagkamatay!

  13. chi chi

Palaging bokya e!

  14. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

Baka natu-tulog sa pansitan. Palaging failure of intelligence.

  15. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP)’s numerical advantage is rendered useless against the Islamic militants due to hit and run tactics and their familiarity of local terrains. Mao Tse-tung defeated numerical superior Kuomintang Army by luring them deeper into favorable terrain and striking them with lethal blow. The Afghan mujahedin rebels annihilated much superior Soviet occupation army with the same Mao’s guerilla warfare tactics. The AFP foot soldiers are best trained in guerilla warfare. They had been fighting Huks insurgency since 1950’s, the 1970’s resurrected CPP-NPA guerilla war and Moro rebellion. Unfortunately, military top brass’ incompetence, corruption, low moral and politics are key factors for the unnecessary lost of lives in the battlefield. What do we expect from Hello Garci Commander-In-Chief and her Generals? Pati casualties may dagdag-bawas pa. Ano ba iyan!

  16. chi chi

What I can see happening is that Asspweron’s AFP is sugod lang ng sugod directionless just to show for propaganda purposes that his kasuputan is doing something.

And Gloria? The pint-sized queen of termites “concerned” is completely useless because of Hello Garci, I totally agree Ka Diego, balik tayo sa legacy ni Gloria. She’s inutile!

  17. My brother-in-law sent me a song sung by Asin titled “Ang Bayan kong Sinilangan” and it tells of the fighting between
“brothers” in Mindanao. He says it was written during the Marcos era but it still rings true today and much worse.

The idiotic criminal squatting at the palace by the murky river has to go. Bakit ayaw pang humirit ang mga pilipino. Pambihira naman! But when we think of the many lives already wasted to make the Philippines a country Filipinos can be proud of, we realize that it has been all a waste, and we begin to feel like most of the people left there, “Just get out of the Philippines as fast as one can!” Nakakalungkot!

    Kawawang bansa!

  18. Chi,

If pinoys will not move agressively, the tradpols will do nothing but mangotong and mag-away, and the soldiers will just follow Asspweron’s order even when they know that they are just being used for business and propaganda, Mindanao will soon be a wasteland, if not yet!

  20. chi chi

    Yuko,

  21. cocoy cocoy

Chi;–The conflict in Mindanao has complex of origin that go back many years ago. These MILF and the Abu were out there fighting in their jungles before Marcos.

But our interest here is not in the conflict dead in the soldiers or the Abu’s, but in the innocents and helpless who were slaughtered during, between, or after these wars. This because they happened to live on one side or the other, or were victims of the repression and terror of those Jihadist or governments that occupied their land. Of those killed by warlords little need be said. Although some warlords were considerate of their subjects, ruling benevolently, generally they were tyrants brooking little opposition. Repression was often massive and massacres were not infrequent; opposition usually meant death.

Gloria and Esperon were no different than the warlords. They murdered opponents, assassinated critics, and employed terror as a device of rule. Moreover, was considered scum, lower than vermin. Their foot soldiers were mistreated, often fed poorly and ill paid; and if wounded or sick they were left to fend for themselves, often to die slow and miserable deaths. In turn, soldiers often treated civilians no better. Looting, rape, arbitrary murder, was a risk helpless civilians faced from passing soldiers or those occupying or reoccupying their villages and towns. But killing by Esperon’s military was also strategic and ideological. They especially sought out communists or communist sympathizers for execution. They went so far as to kill anyone they felt had cooperated with the communists or had been tainted by them. While such killing may have numbered a few from village to village, when these victims are added up over all the villages, people were all dress in black. Maybe, if Jonas is still alive and able to escape, his revelation collaborated the truth

  22. goji goji

International media is also talking about the Mindanao conflict. It’s all over the news around the world. I saw it on CNN today. It made mention of US troops helping the Filipino soldiers.

  23. chi chi

Agree, agree, Cocoy. And we are not forgetting that during this current dispensation that the casualty in the Mindanao conflict is the biggest “and still counting” because of bobo intelligence, while civilians have no rest from fear in sight.
    Gera talaga!

  24. chi chi

    goji,

I was just thinking of the US troops training pinoy soldiers. What could possibly happened na bokya sila parati?!

I’m not a military-minded person and don’t know the rules of the game, pero ang tagal na meron daw training unless lahat ng trained soldiers ay nagbabantay sa pwet ni Gloria!

  25. goji goji

Chi, training can be forever. The foreign troops can always say they are there to support and extend logical assistance. Yet, the RP soldiers are equipped with night vision and sophisticated weapons. Who are providing these? My thinking is just the RP soldiers are in front battling it out while the foreigners are the ones in command. Let’s just pray that this recent conflict won’t escalate into a major battle that we have witnessed in other countries. Or is Gloria Arroyo now implementing her Plan C to stay in power beyond 2010? With less than three years before she steps down, that’s one option she can pick.

  26. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

Ano ba ang Plan C ni Gloria? Martial law o charter change?

  27. goji goji

Diego, Charter Change is Plan B and Emergency Rule is Plan C.
If this conflict in Mindanao gets worse and the US are heavily involved, what would stop Arroyo from declaring emergency rule using terrorism as the reason. Please take note that the West has long been crying about the Al Queda link of these Muslim rebels.

Bakit?

goji;—The war in Mindanao is not a strong reason to justify the declaration of Martial Law. She will be having difficulties to convince the International leaders to support her because there is no nationwide civil unrest. Every nation and not only in the Philippines has a problem of terrorism. Martial law is only declare under the doctrine of necessity when a calamity occurs such as war, riots and rebellion that cannot be dealt with in a normal, peaceful manner. Arroyo could not declare Martial law for her own political survival

    Gokusen,

kahapon,Twenty four government soldiers died yesterday in two separate encounters in the island province of Sulu, including former combatants of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) now affiliated with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP),
The first firefight took place yesterday morning at Barangay Lanut Baranjah, Indanan Sulu. A contingent of Philippine Army soldiers conducted a patrol in the village when a heavily armed Abu Sayyaf ambushed them that resulted in the killing of 11 soldiers two others seriously wounded, who were immediately brought to the public hospital in Jolo for medical treatment
Seven of the 11 Army casualties were MNLF integrees who were integrated into the AFP as a result of the 1996 GRP-MNLF Final Agreemnt.
another Army patrol clashed with ASG militants in Barangay Tabaking, Maimbung, Sulu which resulted to the death of 13 soldiers and one from the Abu Sayyaf Group. The firefight lasted until midnight last night which prompted the AFP to launch heavy bombardment against suspected lairs of the ASG
the AFP suffered heavy casualties during both encounters because the ASG wore Army unforms complete with patches and disguised as Army soldiers.

    Gokusen;
The ongoing war in Mindanao is a ground breaking ceremony. The architect have drawn the plan, and the players are at work. The president needs money, she spent a lot this last election, this is the only way she can produce cash.America has earmarked million dollars in military aid to the Philippines in exchange,U.S. will maintain an extended presence in the region, as the joint U.S.-Philippine Balikatan military exercises. In addition to the political significance of the exercises, they are important because participating U.S. troops routinely leave behind equipment and material that can then be used by the Philippine military, the U.S. military has supplied cargo planes, helicopters and trucks for the operations against the Abu Sayyaf. Arroyo was able to translate this into “kurakot” and her strong support for the Bush administration’s “war on terrorism” into millions of dollars in economic and military aid and billion in trade benefits. That is why, Esperon military spokesman tagged them as Abu Sayyaf. They will not used the term MILF because Esperon army is declaring war for the whole Islam. Bush administration had been monitoring the campaign against the Abu Sayyaf only and not to MILF or MNLF. If there is no conflict such as these “moro-moro” war and no casualties, how could the midget convince Bush that the Philippines needs fund in combating war against Al Qaeda and the war against terrorism.

U.S. support for the campaign against the Abu Sayyaf will strengthen Arroyo’s ties with Bush. Arroyo will not eliminate the ABU’s Moreover, If they are all perished , there is rising concern that other Moro political groups will be targeted as the newest terrorist threats once the Abu Sayyaf campaign dies down. Maybe,Abedol,Abulos Kurayyaf group, headed by kumander Kurraff Garciff. Who knows? What the name of a new terrorist group!

  49. My sympathy to the people of Mindanao and Sulu. I hope the Americans are not killing Filipinos, for they are not supposed to since the Moro problem is a domestic issue that the Philippine government is duty-bound to address without foreign interference.

Such meddling in Philippine affairs should be condemned as a matter of fact.

gusa77 Says: “……take a look at them when they are in Gala attire it seems they engages in so many battles.”

gusa, not all awards/medals conferred to an officer come from his personal achievements either on combat or garrison assigment. how the lowly soldiers discharge their loyalty and devotion to the constitution as main objective of their sworn allegiance to the republic is the basis of any officers’ awards.

even a wounded personnel medal should not be always taken as acquired when wounded in combat. some of them are self inflicted covered up by a fabricated after encounter report.

looking on the situation, the on-going battle in mindanao seems to have no military assault plan & contingencies, no specific target as to whom they are supposed to fire their weapons, no reliable intelligence reports (this is very clear, no doubt!) but most of all, “no commander in-chief giving the right order” to these poor soldiers. hence, i’ll come to conclude of the situation that gloria and esperon are simply standing “idly” no matter how many soldiers and civilians are killed (they never care), because to them, “business must not stop”, so ordered. signed gloria, esperon & bush.

  53. AK-47 AK-47

The ongoing conflict in Mindanao has caught the attention of international media. The only time the world gets to notice us is when we: (1) are engulfed by disasters; or (2), when we show off our predilections for the inane and the trivial. We try to get into the Guiness Book of Records for the longest longaniza, the longest bangus grill, the longest banana-cue, the largest kalamay, and all such trivial pursuits. Our country has become a perpetual theater of the absurd.

  57. Chabeli Chabeli

Blood being spilled in Mindanao for the country is a good thing. It’s patriotic, courageous & brave.

Blood being spilled in Mindanao for Gloria is a bad thing. It’s suicide.

My heart goes out to our soldiers who have lost their lives as well the families who have been displaced. Gloria is not worth it.

  58. I’m listening to the music of Asin as I read this blog at this moment. Inutil talaga!!!

  59. Here’s the page where you can listen to the Asin song. It’s about the civil war in Mindanao.

Dr. Annalisa Enrile, assistant clinical professor at the University of Southern California attended the Women’s International Solidarity Affair in Manila. Returning to the US on August 5, authorities barred her from boarding her flight because her name was allegedly on the “hold-departure order” list of the Bureau of Immigration.

Once all the reinforcements arrive, the military strength in Sulu will be composed of about 5,000 men. – GMANews.TV

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Saturday remained steadfast to her administration’s all-out war against the Abu Sayyaf group and other rogue elements accused of beheading 10 of the 14 Marines who died in a July 10 firefight in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan.

Mrs Arroyo said the war in Mindanao, which so far claimed the lives of 25 soldiers and wounded 10 others, is not an act of vengeance but a strategy to win peace,” against those who spread “mayhem” and “bloodsport” in the South.

“We cannot allow terrorists to hold the South hostage to their agenda of mayhem and bloodsport,” she said.

“We seek peace with those with peaceful intentions. But we also week justice for our soldiers, civilians and communities affected by this conflict. Our troops will prevail because our intentions are just and noble,” she added.

Our stars studed war planner are applying by numbers strategies against home court battles, those are not applicables in any type of war games due your opponents knew the weakness whom they running against with.Even their enemies were miles away they knew already how to set an offensive move,on just any environmental surrounding changes. What they need one company of rangers(120 men),familiarize on dirty tricks,ABUS are playing dirty so match it up w/dirty too. They don’t need 5 regiments of URBAN SOLDIER, those gallantry mens wiil be only history. Unless sending more troops are just to justified something they covering,300-400 mix fighters vs 5000 modern equip troops w/ air strike supports,a war tacticians with that count will never applied numbers games.Match up of expertise only they need.

Ellen, I agree. Arroyo is the heartless person in this world.
Marcos was described as the most cruel dictator; yet as a lawyer and soldier, he didn’t have the heart to launch such an unjustified attack on the south. Arroyo reminds me of Bush who used the 9/11 as the vehicle to attack Iraq that he had long planned to do before 9/11. Arroyo indeed learned so much from his idol Bush. Of much concern now is the involvement of US troops. It takes only one US soldier to get accidentally hurt or killed for the US to justify their all-out attack on the south. That kind of scenario is very possible as proven by history. From where we sit, we could only pray for the best.

  79. goji goji

I should have said the “most” heartless person, this Arroyo. She is not a lawyer and doesn’t know the laws; but common sense dictates that we must protect the people’s human rights.
She has never been a soldier so she doesn’t know how a soldier feels and think; but common sense dictates that a true blooded Filipino soldier does not want to fight and kill another fellow Filipino regardless of his religion. All these simple, basic values cannot be found in Arroyo, the most heartless person in the world surpassing that of Hitler.

  80. Valdemar Valdemar

Lets not fool ourselves anymore. Other countries adviced us not to go into any war anymore. They know we dont have a chance at all. We were never in the offensive. The enemies are. The generals are trying hard to fill their quota of cadaver bags. With the kind of hotheads we have, its better to capitulate now to stop senseless killings. I believe that small kid I asked at Jolo pier why they dont stop the war and he said, they will stop as soon as the army surrender. Our soldiers are trained for urban warfare against unarmed foes. Not against afghan vets. When did we ever win a war or skirmish in the south? Perhaps its high time to transfer the AFP HQs, the Navy, the Army and the Airforce in Sitangkai or nearby it so they can be always on warfooting. And transfer Malacanan there also. That will stop the protests here.

  81. goji goji

Valdemar, outwardly, other countries advise us not to go to war but behind the scene, they do encourage and even provide assistance. I need not elaborate.
