Dana Batnag dares govt: File charges

Video tape shows a reporter, Dana Batnag, talking with Faeldon. Is this what police said aiding him to escape?

For Malaya editorial. click here.

From ABS-CBN online:

A foreign news correspondent being suspected of helping Marine Capt. Nicanor Faeldon escape after the November 29 siege at The Peninsula Manila hotel challenged the government Wednesday to formally file charges against her if it has evidence.

“I appeal to the authorities to file the proper charges before the courts to prove that this is a government of laws,” Dana Batnag said in a statement that also denied the allegations against her. Batnag works for Jiji Press, a Japanese news wire service.

She belittled the accusations against her. “I have not been informed by the police that I am a suspect in the escape of Faeldon.”

“I am honored to be one of the victims in the government’s witchhunt against the media, but my conscience is clear for I have done nothing wrong,” she added.

Reports, meanwhile, said that the military has already put the suspected reporter, who has not been officially named, under surveillance.

Earlier, Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez said the Philippine National Police should name the reporter who allegedly helped Faeldon in light of the fact that Batnag’s name surfaced in relation to the charge.

“With that revelation, it would be better for PNP to come out with [a] name and evidence. And [for] this Dana to meet this head-on so we can lay the issue to rest,” Gonzalez said.

“It’s good for her to come out and make the denials so PNP will be forced to come out with evidence,” he added.

Batnag supported

Groups of journalists, meanwhile, issued statements in support of Batnag.

The Foreign Correspondents’ Association of the Philippines, of which Batnag is vice-president, said, “FOCAP will not comment based on a rumor. We are appealing to the authorities to stop maligning the media. And they should file the appropriate cases in court, the right venue to clear these allegations.”

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), for its part, said the reports linking a member of the media to Faeldon’s escape is “tantamount to rumor-mongering.”

“We challenge them (police) to file the case if they have a case to file. Otherwise, they should stop the witchhunting and rumor-mongering that it has allowed itself to sink into,” the NUJP said.

The group said it stands by “any journalist that the PNP will falsely accuse in its shameful campaign to justify its arrest of journalists last Nov. 29 and the

subsequent threats they issued.”

Meanwhile, government television network RPN-9 said it has reviewed raw footage “many times over” of the standoff at The Peninsula.

“We came across this certain video which was apparently taken by one of our cameramen by accident — Capt Faeldon in one corner of the Peninsula lobby, speaking with one lady reporter,” a statement signed by RPN news and current affairs director Marigold Haber-Dunca said.

“We are not siding with anyone, we are not passing judgement on anyone, let the video speak for itself. We are making this video available to anyone who needs it, in the interest of transparency,” she added.

Inquirers tags Batnag

While The Philippine Star and other broadsheets have been referring to Batnag as the “mysterious lady reporter” who allegedly helped Faeldon escape, a report in the Philippine Daily Inquirer written by Alcuin Papa identified the foreign correspondent.

The Inquirer article said that according to an unnamed military source, Batnag gave a press identification card to Faeldon that allowed the wily leader of the band of rebel soldiers to escape.

The sources said they were not authorized to talk to media but explained that Batnag was captured on camera by a crew of RPN-9.

Reached for comment, Batnag said, “I won’t even dignify any statement made by an anonymous source. The police should make it official.”

Batnag, the report added, further stated that “it seems they are trying to pin the blame on media for Faeldon’s escape. It would be better if they just filed the case in court.”

PNP Director General Avelino Razon, meanwhile, declined to name the reporter. He said he is confident that Faeldon and his accomplices would soon be arrested, even saying they would probably do so within a few days or weeks.

The 42-year-old Faeldon was arrested after participating in the siege of the Oakwood apartments in Makati City in July 2003. He was then consorting with a female military lawyer and this led to his eventual arrest.

He joined former Navy Lt. Antonio Trillanes IV, now a senator, in the walkout from from a court hearing on the Oakwood rebellion case. Together, they walked to The Peninsula which they held for several hours.

Faeldon was thought to have escaped during the melee. The government has put up a P1-million reward for his recapture.

Nakikipag-converse lang pala e! Why it took the PNP to release this video footage, kasi ay walang evidence…ni walang sound/voice to confirm what Faeldon and Batnag was up to.

Yuck talaga!

  3. The video was taken inside the hotel. Paano yun naging aiding to escape?

  4. chi chi

Gloria owned RPN news current affairs director Marigold Haber-Dunca…

    Hmmmnn…Nagpapalakas, nagpapakilala, O Spy?!

  5. chi chi

CIS pala! Ke aga-aga kong nabibwisit sa PNP.

  6. chi chi

It’s better for PNP to make a case out of this video and charge Ms. Batnag. Tapos, counter-charge ni Batnag for million of $$$$ for damages.

  7. chi chi

Sus…CSI! take 3 na toh a! Kape muna ako.

  8. Chi,

Re: The Inquirer article said that according to an unnamed military source, Batnag gave a press identification card to Faeldon that allowed the wily leader of the band of rebel soldiers to escape.

Yup, why dignify an anonymous source…fishing fishing pa rin sila!

Why the RPN cameraman didn’t shoot Batnag giving her press ID to Faeldon if this was the case?

But then, of course, ang gusto lang nilang ipalabas, si Ellen ang tumulong kay Faeldon. Gunggong talaga ano?

  13. chi chi

Gloria Pidal is scared shit to make war with the international/foreign press. Let’s wait for a day or two and the Pidal woman will release a statement distancing herself from the PNP’s statements.

  15. Why do the police, the military and this government not do battle with the real enemies of the Republic instead of harassing media people?

If these government agencies were only doing their job properly I doubt this sort of suspected problem with media will arise! The root cause of all these is perceived corruption, moral and financial, at ALL levels in government — it is at those levels that law agencies should train their guns and not at a news reporter.

Sense of values is all extraordinarily wrong!

  16. chi chi

    Yuko,

I believed so, buti na lang niresbakan kaagad sila ni Ellen. Pahiya sila! Akala nila ay mapapatahimik nila si Ellen at itigil ang kanyang fight for truth and justice.

  17. Right, you are, Anna.

The job of the police is to enforce the law. The law guarantees freedom of the press. What they are doing is suppressing that freedom.

Indeed, “Sense of values is all extraordinarily wrong!”

  18. Chi,

  19. Chi: Patented ang style ng EK!

Sinabi mo pa! Tignan natin ang next palusot ni Dorobo and Company. Meanwhile, balik na ako sa trabaho muna.

hurray to Dana Batnag! That is the correct response. I admire her for her courage to stand up for what is right. I agree that the police should file the case in court and not to rumor monger… the real problem is…they cannot pin Dana with their evidence. Speak first, seek evidence later….hehehehehe. PNP, Puro Palpak Palagi…what a name…

  21. john_grisham john_grisham

  22. john_grisham john_grisham

PNP should stand for Pulis na Palpak. hehehehehe.

    Hi Chi,

RE: Why do the police, the military and this government not do battle with the real enemies of the Republic instead of harassing media people?

Believe it or not, the Filipino People do side with the authorities and the Police on this one. That is the reason the Media has gotten zilch for sympathy and are now beginning to look like fools. They simply don’t have the moral high ground on this one. They cannot erase the impression that at least some of them were at the Manila Pen in active sympathy for these putschists like Faeldon. Women reporters and military freedom fighters. Journalist intellectuals and rebellious, handsome rebel senators. How romantic.

What many miss is that the Media involved have lost public confidence. It’s nothing to do with Press Freedom. They look like spoiled squealing brats who want twice the size of the Freedom cake as everybody else!

  36. DJBRIZALIST DJBRIZALIST

    Adebrux,
Unfortunately for you, the Philippines economy, strangely enough, is now one of the bright spots in the world. Both China and the US economies will take the greatest hits, in some ways because those two economies are “producer and consumer” drivers of the world economy. The Philippines, with its ENGLISH speaking labor force is among the most prepared to take advantage of WHEREVER the best opportunities might be in the post-Crash scenario. There will BE a post-Crash economy, one way or the other. It’s the Year of the Rats, the small, nimble, little brown box-toting world-trotting workers and pilgrims, surviving in a world of falling giants: the elephants and dragons of the world.

And of course local media will continue to lunch at the Pen with rebels and putschists while painting themselves as victims of fascists.

Over at Malacanang, Ermita replied: “Bishops in Palace? What’s wrong with it?” What’s wrong? Is there nothing wrong with handing out white envelopes again? Hello Bishops, magsalita naman kayo. May tinanggap na naman kayo?

With the indulgence of the group, maiba lang ako ng kaunti. Maugong ang balita na baka Erap-Villar o Villar-Erap sa 2010.
If there’s no legal question for Erap to run again as President, Erap might share the term with Villar. After three years, ipapasa niya kay Villar. Another option is for Erap to run as Vice-President with Villar as President. It’s a very good combination: Villar has the money and resources while Erap has the votes and mass support. Of course the above is just rumor. From now on, expect more rumors to come. But come to think about it, they are a very strong team, aren’t they?

“Press Freedom” does not require NEUTRALITY of Mass Media.
Even OBJECTIVITY is not required. Just look at any gossip column or print ad or tv commercial, and you will see how free our speech truly is. The Press is allowed to LIE or tell fairy tales, if it wants, because, press freedom is the freedom of the free market, in this case of news, views, obits, ads, cartoons, and the whole gamut of information in the media. Freedom of speech doesn’t assume the audience is infantile.

Freedom of Speech allows partisanship, but not aiding the escape of arrested rebels. I don’t know that Dana Batnag is guilty of that. But the fact is Nick Faeldon escaped. No one help him? No one saw him? With All those nosey, reporting reporters and kodaking photographers?

But I thought that is why they refused to evacuate even after several police advisories to do so: to find out stuff? Yet no one knows anything about Faeldon escaping?

Maybe the Media thinks the Public is stupid. But some people can smell disingenuous and hypocrisy when they see it. Especially in some kettles who’ve make it a career of calling the pots black.

The Media screwed the pooch at the Manila Pen. It is THEM denigrating Press Freedom by demanding more freedom than everybody else. It is media that is diminishing Democracy with their hubris and arrogance.

Djbrizalist, your points apply to the police also. Yep, also to that DOJ guy. If both sides follow the law, ok lang. But the reality of it is, your side are the ones who break their own laws first.

“Kabaro”? Ibig sabihin magkapareho ng sex, di ba? Someone must have inspired the idiots to weave their script on this word.
But wait!

    Atty:

Ayaw ni Susan Roces. My friend close to the Poes told me that she has not even bothered to congratulate Erap for the pardon. I don’t think she is that close to Erap.

—-I agree. Susan is not that really close to Erap. Not only did she not visit Erap in his residence after he was pardoned, they did not meet at the cemetery for FPJ’s anniversary. Susan has so far not attended any of Erap or Jinggoy’s parties since Erap left Tanay. Sa tingin ko mas malalim ang dahilan. Remember once Erap was accused of dumping FPJ during the election to favor GMA administration? I remember Erap did not categorically deny the accusation. Incidentally, majority of the FPJ fans are also Erap fans. Parehong mga masa naman. And please notice that not all of FPJ groups are joining the Erap groups’ activities these days…and vice-versa. If there’s indeed a gap between the two groups, they better settle it now before 2010.

At first, he threatened to sue the lady reporter because of the alleged video. Kahapon sa interview, he humbly said in a low voice that the PNP needs more collaborating evidences to convict Dana. Hindi daw sapat iyong video na ipinakita. Talagang siRAULOL. Mananakot muna tapos biglang babait-baitan. That has been the policy of DOJ since he became the Sexcretary. And we can say the same to these crooks in Malacanang and PNP. They would first threaten people; then if people fight back, they back off and sing different tune.
