Cory, Erap lead biggest rally against GMA yet

In their biggest anti-Arroyo gathering so far, sectoral groups yesterday gathered at the Ninoy Aquino Monument in Makati City in an interfaith prayer rally attended by former Presidents Corazon Aquino and Joseph Estrada, who reiterated their calls for President Arroyo’s resignation.

Senate witness Rodolfo Noel “Jun” Lozada, who exposed payoffs and other anomalies in government’s national broadband network deal with a Chinese firm, also briefly addressed the crowd that organizers said peaked at 80,000 at the monument at Paseo de Roxas and Ayala avenues, with the protesters on Ayala reaching the Glorietta area.

Police estimated the crowd at 15,000 at its peak.

“Sobra na, tama na, resign na,” Aquino told the crowd.

Aquino said at her age, she thought she was done with rallies but said the times are calling for her to act.

Estrada said the red windbreaker he was wearing symbolizes his desire to be with the people in the continuing search for the truth in the overpriced NBN deal with China’s ZTE Corp.

He said he is with the people’s struggle to search for the “truth” and that President Arroyo should follow the public’s call for her to resign.

“I just want to be remembered as the one who championed the masses,” he said when asked if he had publicly decided to go against Arroyo.

He described himself as an “understaying” president and Arroyo as “overstaying.” He asked the crowd what should be done to someone overstaying. “Palitan na,” said the crowd, to which he said: “Hindi ako ang nagsabi niyan.”

Lozada said some P1.47 billion in government funds intended for various projects is missing.

“Pagkatapos ng gabing to, pakitanong sa gobyerno ninyo kung saan napunta yung P1.47 billion na di ninyo nakita,” he said.

Lozada criticized the police that reportedly blocked several groups of protesters, including contingents of militant groups from Southern Luzon.

He thanked Filipinos supporting him in the search for the truth, particularly in alleged overpriced NBN-ZTE deal.

Joining the United Opposition in the rally were leaders of various Church groups, including Jesus Is Lord’s Eddie Villanueva and Archbishop Oscar Cruz and Bishop Teodoro Bacani.

Also among those in the rally were Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, Rep. Risa Baraquel-Hontiveros, former senator Loi Estrada, former Speaker Jose de Venecia’s wife Gina, Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, civil society leader Pastor Boy Saycon, and ZTE whistle-blower Joey de Venecia III.

Villanueva asked Arroyo to open her eyes to the Filipinos’ living conditions and to the military to remain the “protector” of the Filipino people.

Bacani, in a moment of sarcasm, said it has become hard nowadays to tell the truth in the country. If someone wants to talk about the truth, he would be sent to Hong Kong, Bacani said, referring to Lozada.

And if that someone already wants to go back to his home in Pasig, he would be transported by government agents to Alabang, Bacani added.

Bacani appealed to former socioeconomic planning Secretary Romulo Neri to come out and tell the whole truth in the ZTE deal.

Neri has told the Senate he had been offered by former elections chair Benjamin Abalos P200 million for the approval of the NBN project.

The Alliance of Progressive Labor and the Health Alliance for Democracy, which also joined the rally, called on the public to join the continuous expressions of dismay over Arroyo’s insistence to cling to her post.

Defying last-ditch scare tactics, a broad movement of groups seeking President Arroyo’s resignation yesterday mobilized tens of thousand protesters at the interfaith rally at the Ninoy Aquino Monument in Makati City.

Organizers placed the crowd at 75,000 to 80,000. The police figure was 15,000.

Makati City Mayor and United Opposition president Jejomar Binay unleashed a minor political earthquake when he ended his opening remarks by calling on stage former Presidents Corazon Aquino, in her trademark yellow dress, and Joseph Estrada, in a red windbreaker.

Aquino and Estrada gave brief remarks before the crowd, in an apparent effort not to violate the agreed rally protocol that no politician would be allowed on stage, except for Binay who was tasked to deliver a welcome speech.

Aquino and Estrada sat beside each other on the makeshift stage.

Bayan secretary general Renato Reyes Jr. said rally organizers saw the crowd peak at around 5 p.m., soon after marchers from various points in the country’s financial capital converged at Paseo de Roxas and Ayala avenue.

Reyes said the huge turnout represented “the strongest rejection yet of Mrs. Arroyo.”

“No single group or person claims credit in leading this initiative. No one is excluded and everybody, every group, made a contribution.

Mrs. Gloria Arroyo made this possible. Her bankrupt and corrupt regime provided the urgency for everyone to set aside their differences and struggle together for truth and justice,” Reyes said.

‘Goodbye Gloria’

Priests in white cassocks recited the rosary, university students shouted “Fight for Truth” and office workers from nearby high-rise buildings sprinkled confetti.

“Goodbye Gloria” and “Kick Out Gloria, Change the System” were among the hundreds of placards held up.

In the interfaith portion of the rally, representatives of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente, United Church of Christ in the Philippines, the Philippines for Jesus Movement and Jesus is Lord Movement alternated prayers, reflections and stinging rebukes against Arroyo.

Hundreds of green balloons were released at the end of the program to signify “that we are sending prayers to God,” said Fr. Joe Dizon of Church-based group Solidarity Philippines.

As in the rally last February 15, more protesters applauded and responded when speakers, including bishops, pastors and priests, raised calls for President Arroyo’s resignation.

‘We’ll be watching’

In lieu of “inspirational remarks,” Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz led the protesters in shouting “Gloria resign!” several times.

Sister Mary John Mananzan, prioress of the OSB congregation in the Philippines and leader of the Association of Major Religious Superiors in the Philippines, drew applause for warning politicians aspiring to replace Arroyo that “we will watch you closely, make no mistake about it.”

“We’ve had had enough so expect the people to take action when necessary,” said Mananzan, who noted she was the only female religious onstage.

A big number of new faces joined the rally. The Catholic Education Association of the Philippines (CEAP) mobilized about 10,000 students from member schools, colleges and universities.

Leading the CEAP marchers was a throng of about 500 seminarians bearing an image of the Our Lady of Fatima.

Students from rival schools Ateneo and De La Salle marched together, along with those from Don Bosco in Manila, Mandaluyong and Makati; Adamson University; Sta. Isabel College, and Poveda.

Voices, faces

Students from these schools waved placards and shouted slogans reflecting the calls of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines: “No to EO 464!,” and “Don’t suppress the truth!”

The newly formed student coalition Youth Act Now! mobilized about 5,000 students from UP Manila, UP Diliman, PUP, FEU, Technological Institute of the Philippines and other universities.

Youth Act Now! solicited photos from students and they were flashed on giant screens near the central stage. Student leader Vencer Crisostomo said it aimed “to show the voices and faces of people who demand the truth and accountability.”

Followers of Bro. Eddie Villanueva numbered about 10,000 and came mostly in yellow t-shirts, ribbons and caps.

Evil

Members of the Makati Business Club, led by executive director Alberto Lim, marched from the nearby Asian Institute of Management.

Faculty members of UP came in their “sablay,” the state university’s equivalent of the toga.

Also this time, the statue of slain senator Ninoy Aquino was not dressed up by flags. A placard was planted in his hands. “Gloria is evil,” it said.

Trade unionists from the Kilusang Mayo Uno carried hundreds of masks portraying the likeness of President Arroyo, but with horns, fangs and the word “evil.”

Latecomers include contingents from the Southern Tagalog region as well as two buses bearing students, faculty and administrators of De La Salle-Dasmariñas.

The Cavite-based La Sallians reported they were blocked at Daang Hari in Imus by a certain Col. Quilingen “for no apparent reason and without any traffic violation whatsoever” and were held for an hour before they were let go, according to La Sallian blogger Jhay Rocas.

Alphonse Rivera of the Salinlahi Alliance for Children’s Concerns said “Gloria stinks!” He led about 200 kids in a march that paraded a “roleta” (roulette) showing the various means to force out Arroyo from office: oust, resign, out or impeach.

Brisk sales

Also mobilizing but in smaller numbers were the Black and White Movement, Akbayan, Sanlakas and Laban ng Masa.

Vendors reported brisk sales of barbequed squid, mineral water and rally paraphernalia, especially t-shirts and pins bearing photos and quotations of star witness Rodolfo Noel “Jun” Lozada.

Performers included The Wuds and The Jerks, and new rap artist Peter Parker who drum up interest among the predominantly youth crowd.

In a statement sent from his outpost in far-away Utrecht, The Netherlands, exiled Communist Party of the Philippines founding chair Jose Maria Sison said “the magnitude of the protest mass actions today (will) indicate how close is the end of the Arroyo regime.”

“If the level of 50,000 to 100,000 protest demonstrators is reached at the focal point in the national capital region, then we can hope that in the near future we can reach the level of hundreds of thousands or a million demonstrators that will certainly persuade the bureaucracy and the military to withdraw support from the Arroyo regime,” Sison said. – With Reuters

70,000 come for Truth! source: Malaya

Sinabi na ngang 80,000 more or less, pinipilit pang 15,000 lang daw. Inggit lang sila kasi maski yong crowd doon sa EDSA 2 did not reach that figure.

Baba Na, Gaga!

First time yata sumama ng CEAP sa mass action, dati-rati neutral yan.

  8. Yes, mabuhay ang mga kabataan! Iyan ang tunay na mga pag-asa ng kinabukasan—walang mga naging among dayuhan iyan at walanang US bases na nakikialam sa palakad ng bansa. So, more or less, iba ng kaunti sa takbo ng utak noong ipinaganak before and a little after WWII. Ang this evil regime is serving its purpose of galvanizing the Filipino resolve to be independent and free!

  10. While Senate President Manuel Villar thinks he should not be joining opposition rallies because of the ongoing senate investigation on NBN/ZTE (contrary to the views of Senators Ping Lacson, Chiz Escudero and Noynoy Aquino), Rep. Cynthia Villar was in the rally.

Cynthia marched with Gina de Venecia, wife of Rep. Jose de Venecia, former Transportation Secretary Josie Lichauco and other members of the Concerned Citizens Group.

I remember during impeachment voting for Gloria…there’s this guy who said “wala na bang pipirma para sa katotohanan”… dapat siguro itanong din sa ating mga kababayan “Wala na bang sasama sa rally para sa katotohanan”.

    Susan Roces spurns anti-GMA suitors

    — I feel bad about this..the rally is for “truth”. Bakit siya aatras ngayon. Ang laban naman di nakukuha sa biglaan
she maybe frustrated because the last time she is pushing for Gloria oust medyo hindi nagbunga ng maganda. I feel she is just avoiding ERAP.

They should invite Ms Gina de venecia sa next hearing ng senate because she knows so many things against Gloria and FG.

  12. andres andres

The rally was a big success! We made our statement! Kung di pa naharang ang ibang papunta, we would have easily reached the 100,000 mark!

What we need now is a solid unified stance. What is important is that we were shouting with one voice in yesterdays rally!

We do not need intramurals at this time. Si Evil Bitch lang ang makikinabang.

Over-all, the Filipino people have spoken!

  14. Elvie: While Senate President Manuel Villar thinks he should not be joining opposition rallies because of the ongoing senate investigation on NBN/ZTE

    *****
Legalistically speaking, Elvie, tama si Villar. It can be construed as “conflict of interest” dahil siya ang pinuno sa Senate. He has to play neutral para hindi sabihin hindi fair ang imbestigasyon nila.

Meanwhile, iyong hindi pagpapapunta ni Gloria Dorobo sa mga dapat na imbestigahan should be taken as proof of guilt. Dapat iniisip na nilang ipa-aresto iyan. Unbelievable na walang batas to make it possible to strip the fake president of her right to abuse and be above the law!!!

At least, si Villar, though not a lawyer, is trying to be legalistic or do things according to existing criminal procedures.

  15. Since they are dealing with a criminal though, I guess it is just right for Lacson, Escudero and Noynoy Aquino to attend the rallies. At least, kung nandoon sila, siguro naman matatakot ang mga pulis ni Gloria Dorobo na gawan sila ng kalokohan kahit na in some cases, kapal ng mukha ng mga ungas na magsinungaling even with proofs of misdeeds caught on video ng mga TV networks at cellphones ng mga hina-harrass nila.

Salamat kay Mayor Lim for the back-up given to Mayor Binay. At least, behave iyong mga pulis within the vicinity of the rally center.

Di maganda ang holier than thou attitude niyo minsan at nakaka turn off.

Let us just give credit where it is due.

Sabi nga ng mga tiga Black and white, “Now Na!” o diba, sosy?

    Peace!!!

  17. Padami na ng padami ang nakakapasok sa Makati to join the rally. Next time, iyong nasa checkpoints na mga sundalo at pulis, for sure, makakabayag na at baka kasama na rin sa martsa! Just you wayt, guys!

  33. Statement of Sen. Kiko Pangilinan:

The list of illegal and unlawful acts grows longer. This is an attempt at hiding the truth about the growing disenchantment and the popular outcry against the administration as seen in the number of protestors in Makati.

The more they try to hide the truth, the more they fan the flames of outrage and anger now being felt by our people. The no fly zone policy is another attempt by this government at preventing the truth from reaching our people. The act is deplorable and violates our right to a free press. This is another unconstitutional act committed by government.

  34. Gabriela Gabriela

I agree with you on this, Andres: “Sana lang yung mga B & W and other civil society groups di na tumira ng ibang mga personalities o grupo na sumama kahapon. What we need now is a solid unified stance. That’s why I’m disgusted that this Boy saycon said on TV that civil society walked out when Erap spoke? That’s a lie. There was no walkout.

People and that include “civil society” personalities (btw, ano ba ang ibig sabihin ng civil society?) were there long after Estrada left. Ang daming tao up to the end.

Ano ba ito si Saycon? Ahente ni Gloria sa oposisyon?

Kilala naman sila as a matter of fact. What is important, walang nagbibida-bida sa rally ngayon. Lahat ng kasali, masaya. Na-achieve ang goal to gather as many people as those who can get throgh the checkpoints!!! Umpisa pa lang iyan. There are more to come. Tama na ang sourgraping ng mga ungas! Alam naman nilang it is just a matter of days bagsak na si Gloria.

Kaniya-kaniya diskarte, basta isa lang ang goal—truth and removal of the kapalmuks.

  36. bitchevil bitchevil

Almost all sectors have spoken and called for GMA’s resignation except of course the military that’s in cahoot with Malacanang. And while many religious groups have also spoken, we still have to hear from Iglesia Ni Cristo. El Shaddai has recently manifested its support for Gloria after a long silence. What about INC? People are waiting for INC’s position on this matter.

Bwahahahaha! Sinabi na ngang puro bata lang ang papagsalitain kaya nga hiyang-hiya si Cory dahil akala niya mga bata lang ang magsasalita doon, but it was wisdom an pinagsalita sila ni Erap. Very meaningful to refute allegation by the Dorobos kabayaran that Filipinos cannot unite. Si Cory represented the haves and Erap the havenots even when Erap in fact is not poor, materially speaking. We saw them bury the hatchet. If that is not reconciliation and unity enough, what is?

  38. bitchevil bitchevil

Honestly, I was glad to see Erap and Cory on the same stage. However, I think they should not have been there on the stage since it was supposed to be an inter-faith rally. It should be the religious leaders who were on the stage, not political figures. That’s my sincere and honest take on this thing.

Now, she has mobilized her demolition squad to undermine the impact of the rally last Friday, and trying hard to plant the usual devilish seed of discord among the organizers of the rally. Talaga namang demonya!!!

Pareng Expat-pinoy, ayos ba tayo diyan?

Tell us, we are willing to listen and ready to hear your side?

Please tell us the truth of this unresolve Pidalismo standoff?

RE: Honestly, I was glad to see Erap and Cory on the same stage.

    Kgg. bitchevil,

Nagpapatunay lamang na si Pres. Erap eh mayroong mababang kalooban, at nawika naman niya na pinatawad na niya ang mga nagkasala sa kanya noong 2001, so He is a fully man of dignity and honor sapagka’t ikaw ba naman ang maging AMA ng MASANG PILIPINO!

Remember, Apostle Peter, Mary Magdalene, Apostle Paul mayroon din sila kahinaan bilang tao but GOD chosed them para sa sangkatauhan, i may right bro.!

Hon. Erap magic still alive and kicking, kaya lalo siyang minahal ng Masang Pilipino di ba!

One of the few rallies I have attended and would say that it was a success! No Fly Zone was declared in order for the whole nation not to see the number of people who were there! Lo and Behold! The populace may not have seen the aerial view, but they sure heard the common goal of the Nation!… Katotohanan, Karangalan, Gloria Alis Na!

Checkpoints were set up to harass and drive away the would be attendees, some made their way, unfortunately a lot more failed to be there physically, but they were there spiritually!

Razon, anong rason mo naman this time? After kidnapping Jun Lozada on February 05, harassing the rallyist naman! Don’t even think of saying that you did not connive with Atienza, on orders of others to have Jun kidnapped and silenced! Razon, it’s a pity that you have let yourself be used and your name dragged into the mud. I would assume that you have no idea what the Jun Lozada episode is all about, until it was dropped into your lap on Feb. 05! Come clean and the nation may still redeem your lost soul! Continue with your lies, you’ll only find yourself deeper into the quagmire!
It was a beautiful Rally. Well-organized and Mayor Binay and his Team deserves the credit for an excellent crowd control!

See you on the next one!

  44. bitchevil bitchevil

No Fly Zone should have been limited to people like Neri. Neri has no Fly…

    Gabriela,

Nabubuhay at pumapapel tuwing may ganitong sitwasyon.

  47. andres andres

    Sa Black and White:

    Diba totoo?

I guess nobody asked for his statement or opinion nevertheless he issued one for just one purpose: to get some attention.
Filipinos maybe have a short memory, easy to forgive and forget but what Mr Pangilinan “noted” during the 2004 elections reamained fresh in their memories. He will always be remembered in his role as one of the author of the biggest political scandal in Philippine history. He is one of the biggest contributor to the mess and problems of Philippine society. Yes he was one of the gloria boys who conspired to steal the election from a legitimate winner and made possible the proclamation of an evil bitch to the presidency. And now he wants to show and wants us to believe that he is against the one he helped proclaimed without even issuing an apology and asking forgiveness from the Filipino people he helped cheated.
Maybe Kiko believes that he is well-liked by the people that’s why he is winning in elections. Somebody should knock the head of this guy and made him realize that he will never win even as barangay councilman if not because of his wife which he used as a political ladder to reach where he is now. Rumours has it that he is aspiring and aiming for a much higher post which is completely a different level of playing field. It is a field where the shots are direct hits. Maybe he is so self-confident because of Sharon, but, when he becomes an open target especially on his “noted” role, things will come out differently. Maybe that’s the time that he will wake up to reality.

No Fly Zone sa Makati? Kung sakaling may naligaw baka pabagsakin ng surface to air missile gawang diesel fuel at methane gas (Glorietta-2 fart missile). Si General Razon palaging wala s rason mula naging Pulis Ni Pidal(PNP) chief.

  50. Valdemar Valdemar

There are three kinds of truth. One is some people’s truth that led them falsely to the ouster of Estrada. The other truth is the one the Gloria minions ask for with evidences that hold water in the ‘proper’ fora. Senate is a non-forum, not respected. The third is the a priori truth of the CBCP that should not have existed in the first place.

They should be persecuted!!!

  54. andres andres

    Florry,

We should make people aware of the kind of person Kiko Pangilinan is!

  55. bitchevil bitchevil

Without offense to all Capampangan, it looks like many of these cabalens are traitors and cannot be trusted. For your info, Kiko Pangilinan is also a Capampangan and so is Abalos.

  56. avalanche avalanche

Nakakalungkot din makita na what was supposed to have been a PRAYER RALLY did not really turn out that way.

Down with graft and corruption!
