Similarities of Pakistan and Philippines

Lahore- The governor of Punjab, Lt. Gen. Khalid Maqbool (ret.), in welcoming visiting members of Philippine media, enumerated three features common between Pakistan and the Philippines that should move relations between the two countries from “warm and cordial” to vibrant and gainful.

The first common feature, the governor said, is the two countries’ adherence to democracy “haltingly but successfully.” Second is both governments’ reliance on employment of nationals in other countries. Third is our colonial past.

It is interesting how Pakistan and the Philippines, in their own peculiar ways, have dealt and are still dealing with these realities.

By the way, the members of media who are here on the invitation of the Islamabad Public Research Institute include Dante Francis Ang II of the Manila Times, Natalia Diaz of Inquirer, Lyn Resurreccion of Business Mirror, Fatima Parel of People Asia and myself. Gemma Cruz representing Manila Bulletin was with us in the first part of the trip but had to skip Lahore for an important commitment in Manila.

The governor welcomed us in his elegant official residence which reminds one of stately mansions and lovely gardens in Jane Austen movies.

As governor of Punjab province, Pakistan’s second largest, Governor Maqbool oversees a population of 86 million in area of 79,284 square miles that includes Lahore, considered the cultural and intellectual capital of the country.

The beauty of Lahore is in its being able to preserve much of the tangible elements of its splendid past. We visited Lahore Fort that existed in the 14th and 15th century which through its halls of special and public audience, show a mechanism of leaders’ consultation with the people, the essence of good governance.

There’s also the magnificent Badshahi Mosque, the second largest in the world.

We witnessed the fascinating flag-lowering ceremony at the Pakistan-India border of Wagha, 12 kilometers from Lahore. This tourist attraction shows how the two countries have been able to transcend their violent history and are now responsible members of the international community resolving differences through peaceful means.

We asked the governor how Pakistan is able to nurture their deep sense of nationalism despite having been colonized by the British. We notice this in their daily attire, the shalwar kameez and their use of Urdu as lingua franca.

Noting the colonization of the Philippines by Spain and the United States, the governor quipped, “I don’t know who was the better colonizer.”

He said their people are deeply embedded to the cultural foundation of Pakistan.”Pakistanis are quite accepting what comes out from the West while retaining our own religious beliefs, deep attachment to our own language, our own dress. We think we have a multicultural identity. We have a deep sense of history but we need to be part of the world.

The governor said there’s a big number of Pakistanis working in the United Kingdom, the United States and in the Middle East and they remit to their families about $5 billion annually. (The over 10 million Filipino overseas worker keeps the Philippine government afloat with their estimated annual $10 billion remittances.)

He said although there are a number of Pakistani professionals working in other countries, the bulk are unskilled. He expressed admiration how the Philippines have “successfully sent trained and skilled workforce” all over the world including Pakistan.

There are about 3,000 Filipinos working in Pakistan mostly in telecommunications, hotels and hospitals. Filipino domestic helpers are beginning to be deployed here. In Lahore, there are some 300 Filipinos, among them three chefs in the Chinese and Japanese restaurants of the five-star Avari hotel. We asked Gov. Maqbool how Pakistanis regard Filipino workers.

He said Pakistan is a growing economy and needs to be competitive. If an entrepreneur invests billions of rupees to put up a hospital and a hotel, they would require people who can give sophisticated and quality service.

He said Filipino workers in Pakistan is not an issue. “Actually we should not be getting people from outside. We are 150 million people. If we are not able to train nurses and hotel people, we are not doing a good job. ”

“I hope that if people from the Philippines come and work in hospitals and hotels, our people also need to work hard and become sophisticated. This will be an incentive for them to work harder and come up to the required standard.”

On the similarity of our political situation, a glance at Pakistan’s newspapers’ front pages supports that view. They recently had a parliamentary election that gave parties opposed to President Musharraf’s government a resounding victory. A coalition government was formed which elected Yousuf Raza Gilani as prime minister.

Newspapers report conflicting stand of coalition members on the re-instatement of the judges purged by Musharraf last November to pre-empt legal challenges to his questionable re-election as president. The bottomline in this issue is the independence of the judiciary.

Yesterday’s headline of “The Dawn” says the impasse on the May 12 re-instatement of the judges threatens the fragile coalition.

It’s like reading about Philippine politics.

Many failed to see one basic similarity between the Philippines and Pakistan…both start with the letter “P”…he, he. If Pakistan despite their poverty and chaotic government is now a Nuclear Power, why can’t the Philippines be one? Think about this…if the Philippines has nuke, our neighbors and the large countries would think twice before intimidating and challenging us. We do have good scientists.
Filipinos are not lacking in intelligence and education.

Ellen: just wondering..on the similitaries of the two countries..have you noticed any signs or talks of gov’t cheatings.. tongpats..greed…corruption…things that are the ills of the Phil.?
Re: the comment of the governor on who is a better colonization.it seems to me that the British are better..
We discussed Gandhi’s book in our Non Violent Peace making class and his civil disobedience worked..I wonder if it would sa Phil.

On national pride and wearing of costmes..I attended an International Night to raise funds for the seminarians last night and to see people in their native costumes was simply beautiful..and it was really a testimony of the universality of the catholic church..many of the countries represented were basically “Spanish”..Bolivia, Equador, El
Salvador, Phil. and of course US and Ireland…each presented us with their dances and songs..and the food was also international..I congratulate the organizers of St. Aedan’s Church, JC their pastor Fr. Joseph Altarita and his assitant Fr. Sebastian for the success..I also met a seminarian from Mindanao..many of us came Filipiana..and while waiting for my ride in front of the bulding ang lahat na dumaan ay napahanga ko.simple kimona made in Antique..at nagsabi ang ganda daw..(hindi ako) kundi ang suot ko..just they wait and see when I wear a terno or the patadiong sa susunod..tatayo ako ng isang oras sa harap para makita ang “beauty” (hindi ako..I am only 4’11) ng ating sariling damit…

We dont see us wear the national dresses unless we attend occassions forced by the government sometimes with pocket money to go for public employes or when there is a wedding. But one thing sure we are developing a national uniform, the ukay-ukay.

  5. rose rose

Val: you are right..we only wear the national dresses to attend special occasions..pero come summer time the kinonas (not the fancy ones)..and the barong polo are very appropriate…once my nephew (who was at that time studying at St. Peter’s) modelled a barong nang hiram with sneakers on..he didn’t even know what goes with what..so during their Christmas break umuwi kami at ipinagawa ko siya ng ilang barong..He enjoyed his stay in the Phil. at ngayon had been asking “when are we going home”..mag iipon daw siya para makauwi sa 2009..gustong pumunta sa Boracay pero bago siya makapunta doon uuwi ko siya sa Antique..

  6. rose rose

pero na notice ko may kamahalan din ang mga native dresses natin..not so if we pay in dollars..pero sa karamihan mas mura ng di hamak ang ukay ukay..

Sharp difference between Pakistan and Pinas…the first P can afford to employ foreign maids as in pinays with just salaries; the second P can not afford to give employment even to it’s own citizens.

  11. I have gone to Pakistan myself some years back. I went there with a group of Japanese NGO and visited an Afghan refugee camp in Islamabad that was less progressive than the sights Ellen and companions must have been taken to for the needed publicity on Pakistan prior to the Pandak’s visit there.

In other words, I have seen only the back-streets of Pakistan similar to those places shown in Angelina Jolie’s “The Mighty Heart” filmed in fact in India and infested with wannabe Pakistani terrorists. In short, I did not get to see any of the fantastic tourist spots in Pakistan as the usual glamourous tourist.

As for the colonial mentality, one thing I notice though is that a lot many of those occupied by Great Britain have not that much attachment to the British as the kind of adulation Filipinos feel deeply for the Americans.

I doubt if the Pakistanis have the same amount of gratitude to the British like some gratitude to God the Filipinos feel for Americans that one American I met even commented that he loved going to the Philippines because people there looked up to him as a god!

  12. Up until the end of WWII, or the early and mid-50’s, there were a lot many Filipinos, especially the lolas, still wearing the “kimona’t patadyong.” Both my maternal and paternal grandmothers left a lot of their clothes that are now considered novelty and not daily wear as they did. In fact, the first terno I wore was a handed down from my maternal grandmother.

  13. J J

They retain national identity because unlike the Spanish, the British encouraged the retention of the identity of the peoples they colonized.

Similarities between Pakistan and the Philippines, viewed from US foreign policy perspective:

Pakistan’s location is strategic in the war against terror. Philippines’ location was strategic too for the war against communism before.

The Philippines has NPA and Moro rebellion, a concern to the US now and before.

Pakistan has Al Qaeda problems in the Northeast Frontiers, a serious concern to the US (serious enough for anti-Iraq Barrack Obama to say he’s willing to unilaterally send troops to Pakistan if Musharraf fails to deliver in the war on terror).

The Philippines had the US bases, so we were important to the US before. The US was desperate not to let the Reds gain power.

Pakistan has nuclear power, so they are important to the US more than we were important to the Americans before. That’s why desperate not to let the extremist gain power in Islamabad.

US intervention in Pakistan is heavy. They support democratization to placate anti-Musharraf forces whose discontent might fuel further extremism, while supporting Musharaff, whose firm hand they need to contain the extremist.

The result: a divided government with Musharaff as president and a pro-democracy oppositionis as prime minister. Not bad for US policy and Pakistani democracy.

    Speaking of National Dress:

  16. The Pakistanis, too, speak various languages, and though at present Urdu is considered the national language, there is now a movement to give Punjabi, Pushto, Sindhi, Siraiki and Balochi similar status as the national language(s) of Pakistan.

Yet, despite similar confusion as to which of the major languages there should be considered as the national language, never have the people of Pakistan heard of any head of their government clamor for English to be made as “the national language” unlike what the idiota now wants done, which is shelve the 1958 ruling re the adoption of Pilipino (based on Tagalog) as the national language, and replace it with English, the lingua franca when the US occupied the Philippines.

I really cannot understand why Filipinos would tolerate being treated as more inferior speaking their native tongue than when they speak a foreign language that they actually cannot fully comprehend nor consider their own.

    Golberg,

We met him five years ago at iyan ang unang ipinagyabang sa amin.

A year after Gloria stole the throne, our friend led a group of students to study developing countries. They were invited in Malacanang and he was too proud, nakamayan daw niya si Gloria. For many years, he was saying “I know Gloria Arroyo”. Ngayon, he says that he’ll visit Pinas again when Gloria is out, and “I regret the day I shook Gloria Arroyos’ COLD hands”.

    Sharif’s party quits Pakistan government

    By Kamran Haider htthttp://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080512/wl_nm/pakistan_coalition_dc

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif pulled his party out of Pakistan’s six-week-old coalition government on Monday, plunging the volatile Muslim nation back into political uncertainty.

Sharif, whose Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) was the second-largest member of a four-party alliance, made the announcement after failing to break a deadlock with its main coalition partner over the reinstatement of dismissed judges.

Sharif made the restoration of 60 judges sacked by President Pervez Musharraf in November the main condition for joining the coalition led by the party of Asif Ali Zardari, the widower and political successor of the late Benazir Bhutto.

Marine Capt. Nicanor Faeldon said to Gloria:

“Today, the last of your Garci generals retires from the military. Keep him (Esperon) close for he is rare among us in uniform: An officer willing to prostitute his own institution just to keep you, a fake President, in power. Even if he has officially retired from the service, you have corrupted a once worthy officer into a personal guard dog. He has persecuted those who chose to serve the people instead of you”.

Faeldon charged that the honors and awards Mrs. Arroyo lavish on him may seem to prove that lying and stonewalling make for a rewarding career. http://www.tribuneonline.org

Off topic too: Bishop Yniguez pointed out a very important point, that is, ” ano kaya ang kapalit ng pardon ng 9 na Magadalo”? Expect a postdated, predated or dated the way the asspweron wants kind of affidavits against Sen. Trillanes, Gen Lim and the Tanay Boys. Asspweron plays “very dirty”! Or, since he will be assigned to the customs (from reliable sources) he needs some help with the continued “illegal acts” to protect his patrons. Now ass will be working more for the Fatso and his two hoodlum sons! Hindi matatapos and bayaran ng utang! The evil bitch has to make sure that asspweron will continue to be within her domain!

    GMA went to heaven:

GMA dies and goes to Heaven where she meets St. Peter. She notices that there are clocks everywhere. She asks St. Peter why are there so many clocks here. St. Peter tells her that each clock represents a person on earth and that every time a person tells a lie, the clock ticks off one second.

St. Peter explains that the one clock has never moved because it belonged to mother Theresa and she never told a lie her whole life. The next clock belonged to Abraham Lincoln and since he only told two lies his whole life, only two seconds had clicked.

GMA asks, “Where is FG Mike Arroyo’s clock?” St. Peter says, “Mike’s clock is upstairs in Jesus’ office. He’s using it as a ceiling fan.”

  53. Valdemar Valdemar

One big difference between the Philippines and Pakistan is the tacit unity of the three branches of government in the Philippines after Estrada. They were one in persecuting him. They are one in making money. They sealed it with a MOA. The judicial process emphasizes the presence of proofs of evidence. Little by little they alter the laws to cover their foot trail. I wonder if the new bill of Angara included a diary as a good proof also.

  54. PSB:

Maski ngayon puedeng gawan ng movie iyan. Kaya nga to prove that Erap is in league with these devils who pardoned him, he should make movies similar to those that Michael Moore has been producing to inform the people of the truth about the real state of the nation. He should ask his son, Jinggoy, to use his power as a senator to demand for facts about the rice crisis created by Gloria Dorobo and her minions.

Yuck! Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!

  56. Valdemar: I wonder if the new bill of Angara included a diary as a good proof also.
    *******

  57. Rose:

If you want to see Gloria’s photo in terno, search the internet for her inauguration as president in 2004. Hindi ko kasi tinatago ang litrato ng ungas except those with her panties exposed to use to show that this creep has no class despite her efforts to rub shoulders with the royalties of the world. Kung gusto niyang maging reyna, mag-aral muna siya sa isang finishing school and learn good manners and right conduct, etc.

Transport in mainland Bicol was paralyzed when drivers staged pickets and rallies demanding the removal of the 12% VAT on oil products and the repeal of the oil deregulation law to reduce prices..

  62. Kakatawa ka, Rose. I’d love to meet you when I go to NYC.

I found a long-lost cousin, who lives in PA, and we plan to have a reunion when I visit the US again late this year in NYC. I’ll get hold of Ching Valdes, too.

I’m thinking of visiting UK likewise from there. I promised my son I’ll take him to Oxford and ask my professor there for a recommendation for my son to enter Oxford. I was there in fact long before my son was born. He’s 23 now.

I told him to go to UP, pero ayaw. Mainit daw. UK will be good for him kasi hindi masyadong mainit. Sensitive ang balat kasi sa pawis. Kundi daw Oxford, OK na siya sa SFO because my folks are there, and it is always cool there.

  63. BTW, Rose, I am campaigning for Obama here. I don’t like Hillary since the Lewinsky scandal just so she could stay in the White House. I thought she was worse than Imelda, et al. Now, the more I listen to hear, the more I see a woman difficult and fearful to scorn. Walang pinag-iba kay Dorobo as a matter of fact.

One of my sisters is now a Democrat as she does not like McCain. I guess Romney was advised by members of our church to quit as it was not doing him any good when he would make statements that would jeopardize even his own faith and principles in life.

There is a town in Japan named Obama, and he is surely getting a lot of publicity there.

Binabati ko si Gen. Ass sa kanyang pagreretiro. Enjoy your retirement sir. Go around the world and visit beautiful places like Paris, New York, London. Barcelona, etc. till 2010. Don’t forget to see our kababayans too in Iraq, Afganistan, Lebanon, and Pakistan. If you will not be given any executive position in the government.

To General Yano, it is nice to dream the imposible dream. But keep dreaming sir, it makes us all happy.

The “Hello Garci” operators continue to reap the rewards. Bello is just appointed to a cabinet position.

Over at the Senate, GMA’s gang and attack dogs came in full force at the Senate Power Hearing. The Joint Committees led by number one GMA defender Miriam Santiago and son Rep. Mikey Arroyo didn’t have the delicadeza to inhibit themselves considering that the power crisis is getting to be a battle between the Lopezes and Malacanang. GMA’s gang in the Senate was complete: Santiago, Joker, Enrile. Even though we believe that Meralco has a lot to explain about the very high power rate and we understand that the Lopezes are businessmen out to gain profit, we should not ignore the fact that Malacanang is actually hitting ABS-CBN that has become a torn for Malacanang in her media and public image. Let’s see how the Lopezes handle this matter. Let’s see if they are brave enough to stand up against the evil regime just like they did to Marcos. If they give in, then we could say the Lopezes are also a bunch of BS…

Kung ako iyong pari, I will recommend an excommunication of the Dorobo and her kurakot staff.

‘Tanay boys’ rule out seeking pardon

    BY VICTOR REYES (www.malaya.com)

KEY leaders of the alleged power grab attempt in February 2006 yesterday said they are not going to ask for pardon from President Arroyo.

“I cannot see that we will reach that point. I know we are not guilty. If you ask for pardon, you must first accept your guilt,” said former Marines commandant Maj. Gen. Renato Miranda at the sidelines of court martial proceedings against him and 27 other Marines and Army officers.

    ***

Yano will have a difficult time dealing with the case of the Tanay boys. He knows deep in his heart that the case is just a drama of Asspweron to please and make happy the fake commander-in-cheat Gloria.

    Mabuhay ang Tanay boys!

  71. parasabayan parasabayan

Yano was once the president of the court martial panel so he should know the case very well. He knows too that the case was just asspweron’s case against the Tanay Boys. Asspweron was involved in the election rigging of 2004 which brought about the demoralization of the AFP. Yano, I was told is a very religious man. I hope that the Holy Spirit touches him and he would make the best decision for everyone, keeping the families of the detained and their careers in mind and not just the political whims of a few. Two of the detained(Querubin and Parcon) are medal of valor awardees. Meaning in defense of their country, they were selfless while they went to war. It is time for Yano to respect these men and restore them the freedom they so deserve!

NBN-ZTE is back in the headlines again! I guess the evil bitch has a lot of enemies inspite of her “deodorizing” tactics. To the evil bitch I would say, you can not forever hide from your sins. One of these days, you will have to answer for all of them!

  73. bitchevil bitchevil

Jun Lozada has the intention of going abroad if the ZTE hearing goes nowhere. FYI…Jueteng witness star Sandra Cam is now abroad working as OFW. We’re losing so many credible witnesses. In the meantime, the criminals are still in power in Malacanang.

  74. parasabayan parasabayan

I can not blame Lozada for leaving the country at this time. Every which way he turns, he hits a wall. The legal system is so corrupt. It just knows one face, that of the evil bitch! Once this bitch is gone, let us get all these witnesses in droves and put the bitch and her family all in jail!

  75. parasabayan parasabayan

Lozada has to think about his family above himself.

  76. bitchevil bitchevil

Unfortunately, the Evil Bitch is preparing to stay in power beyond 2010.

  77. parasabayan parasabayan

The evil duo were golfing in Shenzhen, a few meters from the ZTE office according to the “new” witness. After the golfing, the couple(evil bitch, fatso and abalaos) went for a meeting at the ZTE building. The evil bitch and her bulldogs may again say that the picture was just digitally put together. Bunye will no longer be in Malacanang soon kaya wala ng magsasabing “may dalawang larawan” just like the “two disks” on the “hello Garci”.

  78. bitchevil bitchevil

Wanna bet? The Pidal Mafia is now tracing and hunting down this new witness. And when he appears, he might say things that favor the Mafia instead of making damaging statements. It happened before and would happen again…

  79. Someone in this blog mentioned about Filipino body cleanliness. I think that’s one thing that differs them from the Pakistanis. 😛 I don’t know but I got a lot of headaches when I was in Islamabad and the border of Afghanistan.

Was it the time when the glorified yayas were in the party to China? Lets ask those yayas what transpired. Possible sila doubled as GROs, too.

  81. Why can they not copy the procedure in UK, Japan, etc. where the head of the state is questioned on policies that affect the lives of the people who vote for them representatives in the country’s legislative branch? It is not enough that the idiot deliver the same lies over and over again, year after year about the SONA. Tignan natin kung papaano mambobola si Gaga without her ghost writer to tell her what lies to say as she will be forced to answer questions extemporaneously.

Hindi puede iyong mga interviews na pinipili pa niya kung ano ang sasagutin niya that renders any interview with the idiot as useless as it is talking to a monkey! Someone should challenge the idiot to appear in Congress or Senate to answer unanswered questions regarding the many utang she has incurred since 2001 in the name of the people of the Philippines.

Her telling the likes of Neri for instance to ignore summons for senators to grill them should in fact be taken as admission of guilt, and the creeps be made legally responsible for all anomalous activities that they fail to clarify and justify. Problema nga lang iyong dapat na mag-prosecute sa mga ungas kakutsaba noong nag-appoint sa kanila, a privilege in fact that should have long been cut off since EDSA 1. Ang bobo naman!

  82. chi chi

The Pidal yayas sure have lots of stories to tell. I agree Valdemar, they might have doubled as GROs.

  83. bitchevil bitchevil

Why don’t they charge Soc Villegas or even this Cardinal Rosales who played a role in kidnapping witness Doble from the seminary at the height of the Garci tape scandal?
