An exciting US election

David Plotke, a recent visitor courtesy of the US Embassy, said he didn’t rule out that George W. Bush’s secretarry of state Condoleeza Rice would vote for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

Plotke, professor of political science and chairman of the Historical Studies Department of the New School in New York, said this before Rice’s predecessor, Colin Powell endorsed Obama.

Powell’s endorsement was a huge boost to Obama’s candidacy not only because the former was a Republican but as former chairman of the US joint chiefs of staff and secretary of state, he has helped neutralized the propaganda of Republican candidate John McCain’s camp that Obama is naïve in matters of security and foreign affairs.

Powell said he is voting for Obama because he sees the 47-year old African-American presidential aspirant as “ a transformational figure, he is a new generation coming onto the world stage, onto the American stage.”

In his Nov. 2 interview with Jamaica Gleamer newspaper, Powell, who has Jamaican roots, said he sees in the young Obama “commander-in-chief” quality.

Powell, who had declined suggestions for him to enter politics in past elections, said he is impressed with how Obama has run his campaign: “I believe he has demonstrated in this campaign that he understands the issues that we face and he brings the leadership and organizational abilities that one needs to be a good commander-in-chief. If you look at the campaign that he has run, it has been almost perfect, and it has been run almost like a military operation. So, I believe he has the leadership and management skills as well as the substance and the style, frankly, to be a good commander-in-chief and a good leader of foreign policy for the American people.”

Asked how his endorsement would encourage military personnel and veterans, who are inclined to favor Vietnam war veteran McCain, to vote for Obama, Powell said,”Because I was a soldier, military personnel and veterans will take my view into account, but I find that so many of our soldiers now are exceptionally well informed through the Internet and television that they can make informed judgments. I hope they will look at my judgment and compare it to the judgment of others and make an informed choice.”

It’s a very close race with Obama enjoying a slight edge and appears within reach of becoming the nation’s first black president. The battle-scarred Mc Cain goes back into history hoping for a Truman-beats-Dewey-style upset.

The 1948 US presidential election, the greatest political upset in American history, is always a reminder to candidates and media publications the perils of over-confidence.

It’s useful to recall that in the 1948 US presidential the top two candidates were incumbent President Harry S. Truman (Democrat) and Republican Thomas E. Dewey.

Opinion polls, which at that time did not have today’s sophisticated technological tools, put Dewey very much ahead of Truman. So sure was Chicago Tribune of Dewey’s victory that it had for its morning-after issue a banner story “DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN.”

A photograph showing the victorious Truman grinning and holding up a copy of that issue of Chicago Tribune is a humbling reminder to media to keep its ear close to the ground and stick to what is the truth as you see it. Leave the fortune telling to Madame Auring.

This year’s election has generated excitement all over the world because of the possibility that it would produce the first black president, something unthinkable decades ago. But what is it to the Philippines, which long ago receded in the Washington’s radar screen?

Not much. Whether it’s Obama or Mc Cain, an American president will work for the interest of Americans. Which is what it should be, as that is what they are elected for. As David Plotke observed, both candidates don’t question each other’s patriotism.

One thing to be concerned of with Mc Cain is that even if he tried to distance himself from the unpopular Bush, another Republican administration would mean the same arrogant mentality that led to the invasion of Iraq using the lie of weapons of mass destruction.

It’s a continuation of the same policy of “either you are with me or against me” which Gloria Arroyo enthusiastically embraced in the aftermath of the Iraq invasion.

It’s a continuation of the same supercilious, shortsighted policy that look at other nations, especially the smaller ones merely as instruments for maintaining the U.S. status as the only superpower in the world, and not as partners in global development.

Obama is more for engaging those who don’t agree with U.S official policy, like Iran, in a dialogue. It’s not weakness. It’s wisdom.

It is hoped that the world will be better with a less insecure leader of the most powerful country in the world.

Personally, I like Obama because he was smart enough to evade the persistent efforts of Arroyo for a photo opportunity meeting with him last June. Just that simple.

Thanks to Google for photo. (ofamerica.wordpress.com)

Many those in Bush’s cabinet as well as Republicans are silently supporting Obama. They have long acknowledged the mess Bush has created since he took office eight years ago. Even though the gap has narrowed down, it’s still Obama who shall win.

What does an Obama victory mean to us Filipinos? We know that he’s sympathetic to minority and Asians. He lived and went to school in Indonesia as a kid. He grew up in Hawaii, a state that’s predominantly minority. There are many Filipinos in Hawaii. Most of all, it’s time for a change. If a minority doesn’t get it this time, when would it be?

Let’s try Obama for four years and see what he could do. If he fails, then we could dump him next election. As for McCain, are we sure he’s going to live for four more years?
What if he dies earlier? Gosh, not a Sarah Palin running the government. We don’t want to see a President wearing a $150,000 clothes in the White House.

The US financial crisis is far worst than an economic recession. Tax Foundation economists have described Barack Obama’s tax plan as an advancement of redistribution, focusing on dividing the “economic pie”, while John McCain’s tax plan places more emphasis on “growing the pie.”

grow the pie or divide the pie? given the fact that the US is in financial mess.

  3. asiandelight asiandelight

is there really a pie to distribute?

OBAMA: We live in a more competitive world, and that is a fact that cannot be reversed … but we must find a way to make globalisation and trade work for American worker, we will not send jobs overseas.

McCAIN: American workers’ concerns should be addressed by helping them to adapt and compete, not retreat into isolationism and protectionism.

  4. victor victor

So following each tax plans, in essence dividing the electorate along the income lines. those above the bracket will go for McCain as they don’t want their bigger shares devided into smaller sizes, instead wanted them grow bigger, while those on the lower incomes will go for Obama as they wanted their reasonable shares of the Pie which they believe they have the right to have. That is an interesting descriptions. well, it just a matter of 3 or 4 more days and all well be history.

Unemployment in the US has reached 7.1% nationwide. The rich and the greedy have also lost their money on stocks and real estate. Everybody in America are losers including the very poor and even the rich of the world.

Who will employ the unemployed? It is not the US government for sure but the private sectors- Those who own small businesses, medium size businesses and large corporations. Going back to Obama’s tax plan, he will tax individual’s and corporations who generates revenue over $250,000. Statistics shows that small business in America, the backbone of its economy has an average revenue of $ 6 mil a year. Taxing these corporations will not stimulate the economy and will not generate employment. It will actually bankrupt the businesses. It cannot pay for taxes and labor for employment.

The impact of the tax code on economic activity under each candidate’s policies would differ in several important ways. Under Senator McCain’s proposed policies, the top marginal rates (35 percent on individual income and 25 percent on corporate income) would be significantly lower than under Senator Obama’s plan (39.6 and 35 percent, respectively.

Recently, with unemployment rising? is there really a pie to distribute?

WASHINGTON—History’s longest and most costly US election campaign—with a price tag estimated at $2 billion—headed into the final stretch, with Democrat Barack Obama basking in a hefty poll lead on Sunday and Republican John McCain looking to pull a shock upset.

In its latest daily tracking survey, Gallup had Obama gaining momentum and leading 52 percent to 42 percent.

But asiandelight you know as well as most know that elections are not won by how good the programs a party has, but how they are communicated to the electorate. Do you believe the McCain campaign so far was successful in this regard? American voters are no different from any others. Karl Rove was successful in handling the Bush Campaign and even his Presidency, despite in retrospect, the result, including the Meltdown, which may or may not be the result of his Presidency, but I do believe the expensive Iraq war has something to contribute to it too.

But like the Great Yogi said: “it ain’t over ’til it’s over”

Obama could really be hiding some surprises. In response the neocons may be ready to pull off a “Garci” too. Italian paper Corriere interviewed US writer Erica Jong headlined: “Obama Loss Will Spark the Second American Civil War. Blood Will Run In the Streets.” Jong said: “The record shows that voting machines in America are rigged… My friends Ken Follett and Susan Cheever are extremely worried. Naomi Wolf calls me every day. Yesterday, Jane Fonda sent me an e-mail to tell me that she cried all night and can’t cure her ailing back for all the stress…. After having stolen the last two elections, the Republican Mafia… And it’s not a coincidence that President Bush recalled soldiers from Iraq for Dick Cheney to lead against American citizens in the streets.”

  9. vic vic

Yes indeed, it was a very expensive campaign…The last Federal Election in Canada which the defeated Liberal Leader lamented as being won by the Conservatives because of their Bigger campaign funds, all of $15 millions donated by 120000 contributors while the Liberals raised only a paltry $3 millions plus same as the 3rd party Democrats. Very inexpensive compares even to the Philippines.

  10. bitchevil bitchevil

Canada has one of the most peaceful and clean elections. Canada is the most least corrupt countries. Canada has one of the best banking system. One reason why Canadians could relate to Obama is his strong middle class stand and as others criticize, socialist position. Canada has little of those. Canada’s health care system is one example.

  11. asiandelight asiandelight

the US elections are won by independent voters. Majority of the base will stay to their corresponding party. What concerns me is this: many who were not exercising their civic duty to vote in the past US elections even before Clintons are now voting because of “the change they can believe in” A promise that may not be delivered in the next four years. These new voters think that by contributing their votes, it will CHANGE their lives- an entitlement mentality. I think people should vote without expectations.

  12. bitchevil bitchevil

No one knows the future. Change can only happen if we try. If people have given other leaders the chance to govern even if it was a lousy leader like Bush, why not Obama?

Gloria being pro-poor is a big lie! Only for photo-op! Diyan siya magaling! Pang-landi lang!

Funny that a lot many Filipinos should be prejudiced against him though.

  18. bitchevil bitchevil

Many Filipinos are prejudiced against Obama because he’s Black. For many Filipinos, anything white or associated with whites is good. I have heard several times Filipino parents saying they don’t mind their children marrying any nationality except Blacks. Another thing is that many Filipino Catholics even if they are Democrats don’t want Obama.

obama is a making of a good US president, napakalalim na tao, balanse ang katwiran at desisyon, matalino at higit sa lahat may pusong maglingkod sa bayan.

nakakatuwa after eight years of bush leadership may obama na muling magsisimula ng politics of change hindi lang sa us maging sa buong mundo.

sana umabot din sa pinas ang “politics of change” at “yes we can” battlecry ni sen. obama, kasi hirap na ang pilipino sa politics of malacanang mafia at arroyo corrupt-poration – ang “politics of mafia” and “yes we cheat” “yes we corrupt” “yes we lied” “yes we commit constitutional violations” at “yes we commit human rights abuses”

Americans especially the right wing Republicans often associate the Muslims with terrorists. This is totally unfair. In the words of Gen. Powell, he said Obama is not a Muslim. Even if he is, so what? What’s wrong with being a Muslim?

  21. God is punishing America for what Bush did/do to people who have nothing to do with the activities of those violently against US covert operations around the world.

Iraq definitely did not deserve being attacked by Americans. Number of Iraqis slaughtered in US War and Occupation of Iraq has now reached “1,273,378.” That definitely is not something that God can overlook. “An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth,” so says the Hammurabi law of old.

If McCain becomes president of the US, we may be able to see the complete destruction and annihilation both by men and nature of America, and the world may come to its end, for I doubt that he will be any different from Dubya Bush.

I’m not predicting doomsday, but it is as they say, “written on the wall.”

Now let’s go back to Bush as the main blame for going to IRAQ- please also understand that majority of Congress voted for the war.

Here’s a good starting point of why China is now in Iraq: Iraq Signs Oil Deal With China Worth Up to $3 Billion.
    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/29/world/middleeast/29iraq.html
” Iraq had agreed to provide security for Chinese workers and that the Chinese company would also bring its own security team.”

Take Note on security. An Obama presidency pulling troops out of Iraq will not be good for Chinese investment. What’s good for China is good for the US. Just think about it. How will america pay for its debts to China. It is not business, a give and take?

A lot of filipinos is not prejudice against Obama. The Philippines could be better off with the Republican’s free market and trade policies. The democratic party is subscribing protectionist policy which is not good for Philipppine economy. One example is to decrease the qoutas of working visas. Second, Obama himself said- he will not send jobs overseas. That’s protectionism. there’s plenty out there for the world to consider. Obama is only interested in distributing the pie within the US but not the world.

I guess popularity contest always win and money talks.

  23. You bet, BE. Filipinos even condemn their own dark skin with many Filipinos now trying to be fair skinned with all those papaya soaps.

An Afro-American friend of mine once complained of how Filipinos discriminated him. He said he never felt discriminated in Japan, and thought that he would not be subjected to any discrimination in the Philippines because he was not actually black but brown-skinned. But lo and behold, he was disgusted to know that the Filipinos were as prejudiced against blacks as a lot many of his fellow Americans—hindi naman sila puti!

  24. bitchevil bitchevil

Majority of Congress voted for the War because they were deceived by Bush and his gang. Bush ignored the CIA information. Bush knew there was no weapons of mass destruction; and he tied Saddam to Bin Laden to justify attacks on Iraq. It was all about oil…and would continue to be especially under McCain administration. That’s why it’s time for a change. A change of leadership. Someone like Obama who promised to end the war in Iraq.

  25. bitchevil bitchevil

Grizzy, I cannot agree with you more. In the Philippines, Filipinos with Black American blood are being made comedians on TV and movies. They make fun of them. Those with Caucasian blood or so called mestizos and mestizas are made stars.

Obama is in the wrong side of main stream America. Records will show, Barrack Hussein Obama is the most liberal democrat in Congress and the most unqualified presidential nominee in the history of the United States of America. Obama is in favor of socialism, spreading the wealth as he eloquently explained to Joe the Plumber in Ohio, and Universal health care in which a big mistake. Americans still much in the dark about Obama’s relationship to the terrorist Bill Ayers and Rev. Wright (Not god bless America but god damn America as per Rev. Wright). As for Collin Powell, he defended the war in Iraq and spoke at the United Nation in regards to Sadam Hussein having WMD, an hypocrite since Obama is against the war in Iraq. In my opinion, the only reason Powell is supporting Obama only because of his color not Obama’s qualification since he has none. Kinda of scary if Obama is elected, just no one really knows who will show up in the White House, and individuals connected with Obama. McCain has been tested and deserve at least four years in the White House since he has already gave up over five years of his life in Hanoi Hilton, and the only man that really fought for America. McCain walk the walk!

  30. I am actually thinking of joining a group of Japanese from a town in Japan called “Obama City” to attend the inauguration of Obama if he wins.

I cannot vote in the US but I have been an active supporter of Obama in Japan. I liked the guy even before he was declared the democratic candidate for the presidential race.

I did not like Hilary because she is the type that would be willing to deal with the devil just to be able to stay in power ala-Gloria Dorobo. She can be distracted by her ambition to be the most powerful in the US and in the world, and that is not good and really dangerous.

  31. asiandelight asiandelight

The war in Iraq is about OIL. With China, India, Europe and US increasing demand for oil, there’s no way that the world will be better off. Increasind demand with little supply makes OIl prices go up. With China securing its oil supply in IRAQ now could mean lowering demand of OIL from OPEC. This will stimulate oil price to go down plus US financial crisis , hurting consumer confidence to buy chinese products will also lower the demand for OIL. Lots of things to learn. Please do not focus on Bush. Focus on Oil price and how it is going to affect the auto industry, manufacturing and the world’s commodities. The less OIL demand, the lower the price of goods. Expect continued price drop in OIL and expect weakening of our Philippine peso against the dollar.

The US financial crisis has nothing to do with IRAQ war. The US financial mess is all about the housing bubble that the democratic party extended credit to unworthy buyers which will connect to Obama’s policy of welfare for all even though people cannot afford to pay the mortgage of their homes. A person must work to pay his bills not the other way around. That’s why my concern, people are voting because they are being promised of HOPE and CHANGE. That will not be the true and most pinoys know.

    Obama actually sounds Japanese.

Toney, there are just so much talks about McCain’s military service and war records as if this is his only credential. Well, it actually is. Having fought in Vietnam and as POW don’t make one a tested person. He was just at the right time and place; the right history. After several decades, the world is a lot different. How prepared is he in economy and even in war conflict? We’re now talking about nuclear confrontation, not the conventional combat happened in Vietnam. McCain’s war impulse and known hot temper might make him press the computer bottom to start World War 3 which all of us will regret. We need a calm and composed leader like Obama who’s even willing to talk to the enemies.
That’s what we need today…diplomacy and communication. Not arrogance and combative nature we see in McCain…just like Bush.

Hopefully, hindi niya malalansi si Obama even with the Filipino adviser of Obama there to try to make the appointment. Ang alam ko kapampangan ang isang campaign manager ni Obama who was featured in some article in the Philippine media. Pihado ko ina-approach na iyon ng mga strategist ni Pandak.

But then, of course, Obama is not that easy to be hoodwinked as proven when he evaded a close encounter with the Dorobo. Best to do is for a lot many Filipinos to write to him and express their feelings and sentiments against an Obama-Gloria Dorobo coalition!!! 😛

  39. Rose,

Sure only God is the “only one who can decide and can give life,” but let us not forget likewise that He has given us the freedom to choose, and it is a privilege and order that God has not taken back.

As they say, “With privilege comes responsibility.” God has given the Commandment, “Thou shalt not kill” but he has given us the freedom to choose whether or not to follow His Commandments, and we surely know the consequences of disobedience to them.

Obama must have based his opinion on this fact—free agency and the consequence of our action, pros and cons of following or disobeying God’s rule. At least, he is not being a hypocrite unlike McCain.

Sa totoo lang, naaalibadbaran ako kapag naririnig ko si McCain calling his audience, “My friends.” Kakaalibadbad talaga!

In the US, if one suffer from acute injuries or illness, the emergency room will never ask if you have insurance or not. You will get treated right away. It doesn’t matter if you have insurance or not, the government always bear the burden. The difference between Obama and McCain is healthcare itself. McCain focuses on quality such as extending immigration working visa for health care professionals to supply the demand of workers. Second , a person has a choice to choose their insurance plan with $ 5000 rebate on first year. I will take the $5000 and spend it in Boracay… heheheh.

Obama’s policy is healthcare for all which is good. But why is he not in favor for visa extensions for health care professionals.

The problem in america in terms of healthcare is two folds:
    1. lack of professionals to service the sick
    2. lack of money due to US Financial mess. Where would Obama gets the money for his healthcare for all? Who will service the sick if professionals are lacking.

My take on healthcare policy is to correct the demand of professionals workers. Open Immigration so that pinoy nurses can come. But Obama is not willing to open its borders. He is for protectionism.

It is not time for CHANGE that people believe in. It is time to just sit and wait. hehehe 🙂 kinakabahan na ako parang mananalo tong kapatid ni Gloria. hay naku.

It’s an interesting election for me. hopefully in the next 72 hours, I can move on. God Bless America and Philippines.

  43. Reasons Why McCain Might Win

One poll has undecided voters at 14 percent on the last weekend, which means most of them probably really aren’t undecided, that they are either going to stay home or vote preponderantly for McCain and pull McCain across the finish line.

Obama frequently outpolled his final result in primaries, which might have many causes but might also indicate that he has difficulty closing the sale.

The argument in the past two weeks has shifted, such that many undecided voters who are now paying attention are hearing about Obama’s redistributionist tendencies at exactly the right moment for McCain.

The tightening in several daily tracking polls indicates a modest surge on McCain’s part that could continue through the weekend until election day. If he is behind by three or four points right now, a slow and steady move upward could push him past the finish line in first place.

In terms of the electoral map, the energy and focus McCain is directing at Pennsylvania could pay huge dividends if he pulls it off. If he prevails there, it might follow that the message will work in Ohio too. And if he wins Pennsylvania and Ohio, he will probably win even if he loses Virginia and Colorado.

Early voting numbers are not oceanic by any means, which may indicate the degree of enthusiasm for Obama among new voters is not something new but something entirely of a par with past candidates, like John Kerry. And they show more strength on the Republican side than most people expected.

What happened with the Joe the Plumber story is that Obama has now been effectively outed as a liberal, not a moderate; and because liberalism is still less popular than conservatism, that’s not the best place for Obama to be.

The fire lit under Obama’s young supporters in the winter was largely due to Iraq and his opposition to the war. The stunning decline in violence and the departure of Iraq from the front page has put out the fire, to the extent that, like the young woman who made a sexy video calling herself Obama Girl and then didn’t vote in the New York primary because she went to get a manicure, they might not want to stand on line on Tuesday.

Hispanic voters, who are always underpolled, know and appreciate McCain from his stance on immigration and will vote for him in larger numbers than anyone anticipates.

There you have it. It’s admittedly not the strongest case, and the idea that McCain will win on Tuesday is hard to square with the fact there isn’t a single poll that has him in the lead. But unexpected things do happen in politics every election.

  44. florry florry

Personally arguing who will be the better president between Obama and McCain doesn’t make any sense. Before the actual election of Nov. 4, all we know about them are thru their rhetoric and speeches. So nobody can base their assumptions on the basis of their programs and promises. Obama is a very good speaker, an orator who can mesmerize his audience, and can even promise anything for the audience to digest but that doesn’t mean he can be a good president. On the other hand McCain is already an old man more experienced in public life, trying hard to get out from the shadow of Bush administration nicknamed himself as the Maverick but that doesn’t mean he will be a good president either. Just like in many previous and any political exercises before they made so many promises and programs but those are things easier said than done. Making promises and having a platform is different from actual implementation especially at this time of global crises. So nobody really knows how they would fare in the presidency. So until then wait and see.

  47. You’re always welcome Rose.

Much of Obama’s rise to popularity has been due to his domination of the paid advertising. With his coffers swollen by $150 million raised in September, he can buy any available advertising time. But McCain has considerable resources at his disposal as well.

Obama sent shock waves through political circles when he announced that he had amassed $150 million in campaign contributions in September, giving him upwards of $600 million for his campaign.

While his fundraising makes a mockery of McCain’s paltry $100 million in taxpayer funded campaign money, the real advantage to Obama in the election is not likely to be decisive.

Obama is, of course, still the front-runner. But McCain is closing hard as the race enters its final day.

  48. bitchevil bitchevil

Do you notice that whenever McCain gives his speech, he always says “My friends, my friends…friends…” And he has difficulty stretching his hands. I don’t mean to make fun of an old disabled man. I’m more worried about his age. At 72, he would be 76 if he completes his term. If he runs for re-election, he would be 80. Will he be still alive within eight years from now?

  49. asiandelight asiandelight

    Rose,

sorry to hear about your hospitalization experience. here’s my take on your case, avoid HMO plan. Get a preferred plan like PPO. The HMO plan is like Obama’s plan. You will have no access to quality healthcare. Take the $5000 credit from McCain if he wins and change your plan to PPO. make sure the hospital you choose and doctors providing your health services are in your insurance network. I don’t like HMO. It’s healthcare for quantity not quality. Although the PPO plan is more expensive but Health is your only Wealth.

in the meantime, please take care of your health. get a blood test and cholesterol check. Prevention is the best cure. Lots of alternatives out there. Also pay a nutritionist to assess your food intake( probably about $100.00) hindi puede kumain nang masarap na tuyo, anything with high sodium is not good for everybody.

  50. asiandelight asiandelight

    Bitchevil,

McCain’s mom is still alive and coherent at 94 years old. If Obama wins, there’s no guarantee either that he will last 4 year term. With all the death threat Obama receives, Biden is too old to become president either.

  51. bitchevil bitchevil

Obama will die if he gets assassinated. But the consequence would be very serious. Perhaps a civil war. McCain’s mom is 94. Gee, don’t tell me that McCain can run the country at 94.
He may have the longevity of genes; but does he have the mind of a young man? Not with his hot temper. I’m afraid that the US would keep attacking nations if he becomes the President.

  52. asiandelight asiandelight

another concern I have: tax payers money to pay for security. I don’t think many americans are ready for him. hate is still in the air. this will cause further civil unrest and more tax payers money to investigate. bakit na man kasi… ano ba. it’s not peaceful at all this election. parang pinas. too many Acorn fraud and other investigations going on Obama’s foreign donations. sayang ang pera nang gobierno just to protect him.

In a month, the cholesterol went down to 226. What did he take? Vit C, 3000 mg, and niacin 100 mg twice daily. Yun lang. Walang pure lysine sa PI, so I sent that to him, but that was after a month on Vit C and niacin.

You can get these in Walgreens, mura lang. No need to buy the formulations on the website.

Obama should thank his stars for being black. He might even win the US presidency because of it. Obamania is in because of his color. If he was a white man he will never be in such a situation. Never mind if anybody agree or disagree but those are the whispers and unspoken fact about him.

White America wanted very much to shed the ugly label of being a racist. They wanted to show that America is the showcase of democracy in this part of the world; the land of equality and of equal and unlimited opportunities. They also wanted to make history (if he wins) by electing the first black president. Of course it is not a unanimous thing. Some whites are saying they are for Obama but actually they are for McCain, so even if the polls show that Obama is winning the race, possibility of McCain to win the prize is still there. That lies the danger, because if McCain slips through inspite of his poor showing in the polls it can be said that America is not yet ready to entrust the steering wheel to a minority.

Now, if old McCain wins and dies, too, stupid Palin takes over and the whole world is dead.

    Ah, Americans.

  64. So if Obama wins the US will be an Obamanation?

  65. These Americans are sometimes stupid, but I sleep well at night knowing they are guarding that wall. Would we rather have China or Russia?

I have admired the way Americans provide federal funding for their campaigns, unlike here in the Philippines, it shields them from beholding to interest groups – why did Obama chose private funding? If they are trying to copy Philippine politics they are in for a big surprise.

Whether its Obama or McCain, we will have to wait and hope that the future will be better for our country, no, we have to work for it…

  66. Now, if old McCain wins and dies, too, stupid Palin takes over and the whole world is dead.- Tongue

    Ha! ha! ha!

  67. bitchevil bitchevil

Many have the opinion that an Obama victory is good for the Philippines and other countries. Too bad other countries cannot vote; but if they can they would vote for Obama. What’s needed today is global cooperation. For the countries to cooperate, a likable person is preferred. The world is sick and tired of Bush’s face just like we Filipinos are tired of GMA’s face. Whenever we see these two on TV, they make us more depressed. Unfortunately for McCain, people see Bush when they see him. America needs a calm and charismatic President. Obama is. McCain may be a good man; but he has a bad temper and impulsive.

  68. Many people honestly believe Obama will be assassinated if he wins the Presidency. My reaction was, “Yeah, right”. This is the 21st century not the 1960s. The color of your skin doesn’t matter anymore.I do not believe the color of Obama’s skin would be the sole reason for such an attack, but after I paid 50 pesos to an old woman in front of Quiapo church, she made me do believe assassination attempts could be possible. Associations between Obama and terrorists are easy to make. His name sounds eerily familiar to Osama’s. And his middle name is Hussein. His overall name sounds more like the name of a man identified in the 9/11 attacks than a man running for President of the United States. Then the old woman realize that this is just coincidence, but she would not put it past some to make the associations.

For another 30 pesos she pulled another card on the deck to see if she could find any other reason that were threatening or implied harm to Obama. She found it in a “sotang bastos” card. admittedly, is over the top and probably a card or two shy of a full deck, but this hatred demonstrates that the liberal camp can spark a bit of rage,

For another 20 pesos the old woman told me that Obama could win easily if he choose Hillary Clinton. Now,most woman are voting for Palin.

Then, the woman asked me who is Sara Palin? I told her, give me back all the money I gave you and I will tell you who is Sara Palin plus a bonus if you are interested to know who is Monica Lewinsky.

  69. I don’t know, but if Obama wins just because he staunchly anti Bush – its no different from our local politicos posing as anti Gloria.
Platforms should not be founded on being anti-whoever but on workable plans and equally solid track records.
I’m not into US politics that much but just by hearing the rhetorics – Obama sounds very much like Chiz Escudero. Very eloquent, composed, knows how to play to the crowd, a darling of the press, etc.
If we’re to look at the merits, track records of actual leadership, management experience should matter. How many bills/laws did they pass, not to mention personal philosophy, associations, peers. If we have something like this when Gloria was initiating her move against Erap, all her associations with who’s who Philippine corruption scene, etc., it would have been a different story…but I remember the media at that time was beating up Erap so badly too…
If people based their decisions on likability, and eloquence, Mike Velarde could be our next president…

  70. The first instinct might be to point to Obama’s race. Certainly some people will not vote for a black candidate. But that may be offset, at least in part, by a greater turnout from black voters, plus the support of Americans thrilled to see the country turn a page in its troubled racial history.

Then there are the smears Obama endured — lies about his background, religion and nationality. Internet-fueled rumors falsely label him a Muslim, which, despite American pride in religious freedom, remains a pejorative among some voters.Obama doesn’t even know that Kenyan auntie is “tago ng tago” sa America.Obama want to grant driver license to illegal aliens.Obama want to distribute wealth to lazy americans. No way Jose! I work hard for my money then Obama will take a portion of it and give it to a lazy ass.

But there are other reasons. The sharp social divide seen in the 2004 election, when Bush defeated John Kerry, has not disappeared. For many voters, Obama is simply seen as too liberal, especially on issues like taxes, abortion and gun rights.

Obama has had difficulty connecting with working-class voters. He did not help his cause in primary season when he made comments once about bitter rural voters who cling to guns and religion because of their economic frustrations. Some people were disturbed by Obama’s longtime relationship with pastor Jeremiah Wright, whose anti-American diatribes circulated on the Internet.

    Relative lack of experience
Some voters are concerned about his relative lack of experience, especially as America is engaged in two wars and memories of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks remain fresh.

McCain is about as formidable a candidate as Republicans could have offered, given the party’s unpopularity. Unlike other Republicans, McCain could try to distance himself from Bush. Though he has agreed with Bush on most policies, he defied the administration on some big issues, including global warming, treatment of terrorism detainees and campaign finance.

  73. Its the ground game that counts not the issues. If you have so much money to pay for task forces to round up warm bodies (actual voters), register them, get them out to vote, media coverage, visibility, mobility, etc…but you have to agree, Gloria’s gound game was and is unbeatable – manipulating the election returns.

Governor Palin was a Mayor, Chaired the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservative Commission and presently governor of Alaska. Gov. Palin is the only candidate running with Executive experience, in comparison with McCain, Biden and especially Obama a community organizer. Gov. JOHN McCAIN PRO LIFE? WHAT A JOKE

    By Chuck Baldwin
    August 22, 2008
    NewsWithViews.com

Once again, “pro-life” Christians are doing back flips to try and justify their compromise of the life issue by trying to convince everyone (including themselves) that John McCain is truly pro-life. However, these same people know in their hearts that John McCain shares no fidelity to the life issue in any significant or meaningful way. Like many in the Republican Party, McCain’s commitment to life is about as deep as a mud puddle.

Dare I remind everyone that the “pro-life” GOP controlled the entire federal government from 2000 to 2006 and nothing was done to overturn Roe v. Wade or end legal abortion-on-demand? When George W. Bush took the oath of office in January of 2001, over one million innocent unborn babies were being murdered in the wombs of their mothers every year via legal abortions in this country. And when George W. Bush leaves office in January of 2009, over one million innocent unborn babies would still be murdered in the wombs of their mothers every year via legal abortions in this country. Eight years of a “pro-life” President and six years of the “pro-life” GOP in charge of the entire federal government and not one unborn baby’s life has been saved. Roe v. Wade is still the law of the land, and abortion-on-demand is still legal in America.

Had John McCain and his fellow Republicans truly wanted to end legal abortion, they could have passed Congressman Ron Paul’s Sanctity of Life Act. Year after year, Dr. Paul introduced this bill, and year after year, it sat and collected dust in the document room on Capitol Hill.

What would Congressman Paul’s bill do? It would do two things: 1) It would define life as beginning at conception and, thus, declare the personhood of every pre-born child. 2) Under Article. III. Section. 2. of the U.S. Constitution, it would remove abortion from the jurisdiction of the Court. In practical terms, Dr. Paul’s bill would overturn Roe v. Wade and end legal abortion-on-demand. So, where was John McCain? Why did he not support Ron Paul’s bill and introduce a companion bill in the U.S. Senate?

How can John McCain, and his fellow Republicans in Washington, D.C., look pro-life Christians and conservatives in the eye in 2008 and expect that we take them seriously when they say that they are “pro-life”? If the GOP had truly wanted to overturn Roe v. Wade and end legal abortion-on-demand, they could have already done it. They controlled the White House, the U.S. Senate, and the House of Representatives for six long years, for goodness sake. The reason they did not do it is because they did not want to do it. They merely want to use “pro-life” rhetoric as a campaign tool to dupe gullible Christian voters every election year. And the disgusting thing about it is–it works.

If the GOP had truly wanted to overturn Roe v. Wade….” Statement is not quite correct. Senate records will show that Senator McCain never supported to overturn Roe VS Wade.

  86. Sarah Palin is not stupid. If she’s an idiot Alaskan won’t vote for her as their governor.

Many Republicans and conservatives have reveled in the pick of Sarah Palin, Vice Presidential Candidate on the Republican ticket. Numerous reasons account for the support Palin has received from conservatives and the GOP. One reason Sarah Palin admirers give to explain their support for her is her “everyday people” appeal. These voters prefer the simple talk of Sarah Palin and John McCain to the poignant speech of Barack Obama- which is of course, their choice. However, much of the McCain/Palin supporters’ beliefs travel beyond the realm of preference- many of those supporters actually condemn the intellect of Barack Obama. This is evident with such statements as, “He (Obama) has so much to say but I just can’t be bothered to try to understand it.” Or, “He (Obama) can’t just say what he needs to without blathering about.” These are actual quotes from everyday people.

Since when has being a highly educated person become something to look down upon in America?

  87. reyp reyp

Wrong grammar on Baldwin’s part but the gist is there….Republicans are just using the abortion issue for election purposes…all talk, NO WALK.

It is really disgusting as this strategy works very well. Maraming tanga nagpapaloko. IF they really want pro-life, vote Ron Paul.

  88. cocoy,
My fears exactly. The governor of the biggest state, actually leading a big staff, balancing an enormous budget, etc. can hardly be that stupid.

Lets face it, if you listen to somebody talking in tagalog with a bisaya accent it really sounds stupid or “tanga”. Then again, its the actual accomplishments that count not the rhetoric, but thats just me…

  89. Smart people like Gloria Arroyo, Chiz Escudero, Cayetano, etc. sounded smart too, and looked the part. Hmmmmm, thats why we swallowed hook, line and sinker – hence the heaven-on-earth government we are enjoying right now.

Sarah Palin may be wrong about the existence of a “real” America where people are decent and patriotic – and a “fake” America where they’re not.

McCain campaign has devolved into silly arguments mixed with smears: Obama is a “socialist” and a “redistributionist” because he favors a progressive income tax.

The sad fact: McCain, joined by his running mate, Sarah Palin, who seems to have no constraints on what ugly or dangerous words come out of her mouth.

Palin fired up her angry crowds by accusing Obama of “palling around with terrorists,” a reference to his limited association with Ayers. Some of her supporters responded by calling Obama a “traitor”.

Tsk..Tsk… these are not the American people we’ve known before.

  93. Toney, I laughed because of that “stupid” adjective and not because the joke was on a woman. Gender has nothing to do with the joke that a stupid creature, who’s idea of foreign relations is being next door to another country, would become president of the world’s superpower.

Tongue, didn’t say woman. He said “palin”. Palin could be a man or a woman and the joke is still there.

  94. Tilamsik Tilamsik

John McCain and Sarah Palin, the Republican candidates, have shown themselves to be authoritarian aristocrats. Indeed, their campaign has warmed the hearts of fellow authoritarians, who applaud them for their negativity, nastiness, and dishonest ploys.

The McCain/Palin campaign has assumed a typical authoritarian posture: Rather, they simply ask voters to “trust us” and suggest that their opponents – Senators Barack Obama and Joe Biden – are not “real Americans” like McCain, Palin, and the voters they are seeking to court. Accordingly, McCain and Palin have called Obama “a socialist,” “a redistributionist,” “a Marxist,” and “a communist” – without a shred of evidence to support their name-calling, for these terms are pejorative, rather than in any manner descriptive. This is the way authoritarian leaders operate.

  95. IF Obama will do an FDR or better a Lincoln, he’ll be assassinated for sure. And he knows that.

So being a member of CFR like Biden, he’ll try to satisfy both the greed of the Elite and basic needs of masses.

In short, nothing to be optimistic about.

It’s still a long way to go for this planet.

If ever McCain would loose in the presidential elections, he has no one to blame but himself and that of Bush. The Americans are fed up with 8 years of Bush as has been proven by his popularity rating dropping to an all time low. 8 years of Bush has somehow affected a lot of Americans thus the negative sentiments toward him. “It’s the economy, Stupid.” It is still debatable whether the financial crisis should be blamed on Dubya, but the fact is, it happened under his watch. Obama on the other hand does his campaign very well and taking advantage of Bush’s unpopularity by associating McCain w/ Bush. As for picking Palin as his VP. She had somehow become more of an excess baggage than an asset in McCain’s quest for the presidential post. So many controversy pops up during the campaign, like the abuse of power and the US$150K wardrobe.. etc….

I can say a lot about Biden the gaffe machine and Obama’s idealogy, and especially those supporting Obama/Biden ticket, they’re not examining the most important issues, what will do to America, they just want change, change to what? I truly believe, Governor Sarah Palin is the only honest candidate on that bunch and she’s a woman. A special woman once said to me (she work in a large corporation), “I’m not too concern about men of trying to bring me down, but spiteful jealous women.” Lots of truth to that statement, as I watch women specially in the main media, 24/7 negative comments about the Governor. Those women are just having problem accepting Governor Sarah Palin. You would think these women will promote the advancement of women, but…. Governor Palin is not a joke, she’s a real woman that America need. Men’s did enough for over 200 years, it’s now the women’s turn to rid of corruption in Washington, the good ole boys network.

Who would be better for the Philippines, President Obama or President McCain? I believe Democrat Barack Obama would be more sympathetic to Filipinos.

First, he is an African-American, therefore belonging to the minority. In the US, Blacks, Latinos and Asians like the Filipinos usually work together to push their issues. Obama will be more open on immigration reform towards Asians.

Second, Obama grew up in Indonesia and therefore, has roots in Asean.

Third, Obama also grew up in Hawaii where Japanese and Filipinos predominate. Many Filipinos in Hawaii know him personally.

Fourth, after New York, Chicago and the state of Illinois consist of the second biggest concentration of Filipino Americans in the US many of whom have supported Barrack Obama in earlier campaigns.

Fifth, the Democrats are the party of labor while the Republicans are the party of big business. An Obama presidency would be more generous in giving development aid to impoverished countries. Obama has pledged to bring the US troops home from Iraq. That would release billions of dollars that can be made available to help emerging countries like the Philippines.

Sixth, just as it was during the Clinton presidency, there will be more Filipinos working in the White House.

Seventh, if Obama wins as the first black President, any Filipino American can also aspire to be President. The barriers have been broken.

We’re used to seeing such blatant caricaturing on US politicians. But Sarah Palin is something new. She’s all caricature. As the candidate of a party whose positions on individual issues are poll nowhere, her stick is not even designed to sell a line of policies. It’s just designed to sell her.

In the End the Amercian Voters will decide their destiny. But for me, the biggest fault of McCain campaign is timing. Wrong time, for a Right Person. After 2 terms of George W. distracted by Iraq, Afghanistan and Ben Ladin and the Monster of them All the Financial Meltdown and the looming R and the Shrinking of the U.S. Economy people of course wanted change and McCain is associated with W. As for Palin her fault is being a Woman in a Man’s World and trying so hard.

Comes Wednesday, this issue will be settled. U.S.A will move on, who over wins, that is for sure, because there is the Economy to Fix, the War to tend and the “boys and girls” to bring home to. And the Slooganeerings will end where the actions will begin. That is America, the guy down south, always a good neighbour to us.

    Vic,
You said it right. “USA will move on” whoever wins in the election. There are many good former presidents of the USA from the republican and democratic party. Most served the American people well. Sad to say, that cannot be said in our benighted country.

In the hours before Election Day, as inevitable as winter, comes an onslaught of dirty tricks — confusing e-mails, disturbing phone calls and insinuating fliers left on doorsteps during the night.

The intent, almost always, is to keep folks from voting or to confuse them, usually through intimidation or misinformation. But in this presidential race, in which a black man leads most polls, some of the deceit has a decidedly racist bent.

Complaints have surfaced in predominantly African-American neighborhoods of Philadelphia where fliers have circulated, warning voters they could be arrested at the polls if they had unpaid parking tickets or if they had criminal convictions.

Over the weekend in Virginia, bogus fliers with an authentic-looking commonwealth seal said fears of high voter turnout had prompted election officials to hold two elections — one on Tuesday for Republicans and another on Wednesday for Democrats.

In New Mexico, two Hispanic women filed a lawsuit last week claiming they were harassed by a private investigator working for a Republican lawyer who came to their homes and threatened to call immigration authorities, even though they are U.S. citizens.

“He was questioning her status, saying that he needed to see her papers and documents to show that she was a U.S. citizen and was a legitimate voter,” said Guadalupe Bojorquez, speaking on behalf of her mother, Dora Escobedo, a 67-year-old Albuquerque resident who speaks only Spanish. “He totally, totally scared the heck out of her.”
In Pennsylvania, e-mails appeared linking Democrat Barack Obama to the Holocaust. “Jewish Americans cannot afford to make the wrong decision on Tuesday, Nov. 4,” said the electronic message, paid for by an entity calling itself the Republican Federal Committee. “Many of our ancestors ignored the warning signs in the 1930s and 1940s and made a tragic mistake.”

Laughlin McDonald, who leads the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project, said he has never seen “an election where there was more interest and more voter turnout, and more efforts to suppress registration and turnout. And that has a real impact on minorities.”

The Obama campaign and civil rights advocacy groups have signed up millions of new voters for this presidential race. In Ohio alone, some 600,000 have submitted new voter registration cards.

Across the country, many of these first-time voters are young and strong Obama supporters. Many are also black and Hispanic.
Activist groups say it is this fresh crop of ballot-minded citizens that makes some Republicans very nervous. And they say they expect the dirty tricks to get dirtier in final hours before Tuesday.

“Oh, there’s plenty of time for things to get ugly,” said Zachary Stalberg, president of The Committee of Seventy, a Philadelphia-based government watchdog group that is nonpartisan.

Other reports of intimidation efforts in the hotly contested state of Pennsylvania include leaflets taped to picnic benches at Drexel University, warning students that police would be at the polls on Tuesday to arrest would-be voters with prior criminal offenses.
In his Jewish neighborhood, Stalberg said, fliers were recently left claiming Obama was more sympathetic to Palestinians than to Israel, and showed a photograph of him speaking in Germany.

“It shows up between the screen door and the front door in the middle of the night,” Stalberg said. “Why couldn’t someone knock on the door and hand that to me in the middle of the day? In a sense, it’s very smartly done. The message gets through. It’s done carefully enough that people might read it.”

Such tactics are common, and are often impossible to trace. Robo-calls, in which automated, bogus phone messages are sent over and over, are very hard to trace to their source, say voting advocates. E-mails fall into the same category.

In Nevada, for example, Latino voters said they had received calls from people describing themselves as Obama volunteers, urging them to cast their ballot over the phone.

  112. This election has become about far more than John McCain vs. Barack Obama; it has become about whether the United States will remain the champion of freedom – economic and political – or whether we will join the queue of formerly great nations now struggling to pay for all the social welfare “benefits” their aging and lazy populations demand.

  113. McCain is a passionate patriot who has always been, and will always be, guided by what he thinks is best for America. McCain believes in winning wars.

McCain is much, much funnier than Barack Obama. But then, almost everyone is.

Anyway, the catholic church after reading my post, maybe, about the old woman in front of Quiapo church who predict the future with a “Sotang Bastos” cards in hand, contradicted my beliefs so with Manila mayor.Mayor Lim want to spray paint there booth.

  114. McCain may not be a Ph.D. economist, but he understands that raising taxes and adopting protectionist trade policies will deepen and prolong this recession. Nor would he permit Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid to push through the “card check” law – a union-backed measure that would reverse 73 years of labor law in this country by scuttling the secret ballot in union elections. Even George McGovern has denounced this job-killing, freedom-smothering law that Obama supports. Greater unionization will translate into lost productivity, inflationary pressure and fewer jobs.

Mc Cain earned his math master degree inside the vietcong prison camp by scribing roman numerals inside his prison walls, which all prisoners always do on their calendar.

Catholics claim Christians are not for Obama because of his controversial position on several issues. Are Catholics really Christians or can they speak for all Christians? The Catholic Church should check their own backyard. Who commit abortion, divorce and other immoralities? Aren’t they Catholics? Obama is a Christian. Even if he’s not, is this an issue? What if he happens to be a Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist or even Atheist? There are many Catholic leaders who don’t practice what they have been preached. Isn’t Gloria Arroyo a devout Catholic?

I don’t care who wins the US presidency, it’s foreign policies will not change. I placed a huge bet on that…with the hubby, a registered dem.

Yup, Rose. Iyan ang isa sa bet ko…US policy towards my beloved Mindanao.

  120. Cocoy, Chi, Rose, your comments this date induced me to break my silence on the US 2008 elections. Among the flood of opinions in Ellenville, yours were the rare sentiments that touched on Pinoyland, particularly Mindanao. Just as Cocoy fears there is more than a hint that an Obama presidency will make an unneeded change: an America that turns inwards – laissez faire, noninterference in the affairs of others, globally. I prefer being dominated by Yankees rather than Chinks.

  121. bitchevil bitchevil

While it is true that the US foreign policies would basically the same whoever wins the election, McCain is geared towards war and strengthening US military presence abroad. Obama wants to bring back the troops in Iraq and so far, all indications point to a calmer, friendlier, accommodating Obama administration. How does Obama’s victory affect the Philippines particularly Mindano? Well, these GIs who disguised themselves as humanitarian and medical groups but actually are engaged/meddling in the Mindanao conflict would be sent home by Obama government.

  122. asiandelight asiandelight

“Well, these GIs who disguised themselves as humanitarian and medical groups but actually are engaged/meddling in the Mindanao conflict would be sent home by Obama government.”

if that’s the case, then conflict in Mindanao will continue. We don’t have the capabilities nor the financial leverage to secure our Mindanao. United Nations will not promote its cause unless implementation of their projects are safe and secure to those who are involve. Our own military are not as good as we think.

  123. bitchevil bitchevil

What makes you think that the Mindanao conflict would stop if the US soldiers remain? The longer the conflict, the better for them. Conflict justifies their presence.

  124. bitchevil bitchevil

Take note that our government is against a few thousands of Muslim rebels. If the RP military really is serious in eliminating them, we could even without the US soldiers. If we are against a foreign country, then the US’s help is more justified.

The word “bitch” is not used for men. It is used only for women. So, it cannot be applicable to Obama, only to the evil bitch, who has no shame.

  126. I had the good fortune in fact to meet Obama last year when I was there in summer. He came to the Bay Area, and I had he luck to be around Oakland when he rounded up the place for supporters. I volunteered to be one in Japan where there is a pretty good number of American voters. I actually volunteered to be more like a cheering squad. 😛

The guy surely has charisma, but talking to him in person even for just a minute or two makes one feel the sincerity of the guy. Asian ang dating. It must be because he spent his formative years in Indonesia.

That’s what I call international as a matter of fact, not as provincial as the guy who pretends to be friends to all. Ipinagmalaki pa kuno ang mga peklat niya sa guerra. Marami akong kakilalang nagsilbi sa Vietname na may peklat din pero napilitan lang naman magpunta sa Vietnam dahil ayaw makulong when the draft was compulsory.

Sign of patriotism, I doubt. Iyon ngang pinsan ko nasiraan ng bait sa Vietnam, but I doubt that he has really felt that patriotic to America.

  127. This US election is really exciting for me. I have never really participated in any US election before. But the desire to make sure that no Bush advicate gets the seat at the White House has made me change my mind about being just a passive observer. I felt that doing something to make sure that no puppet of Bush sits there will surely help change not just the US but the world—if possible, be war-free.

Hopefully, Obama will not get assassinated by some crazy white, brown, yellow and even black lunatic thriving in the US of A.

No candidate in US elections have been so badly battered by media as Sarah Palin. She is not stupid or idiot or a moron as they pictured her. How can she govern as mayor and then governor of a state if she was what they say about her. Her only fault is she is Washington outsider and she is a woman, and other women are seeing green with envy. She is not recognized as a member of the elite. She did not come from a prestigious school. She graduated at University of Idaho with a degree in Journalism, while all previous presidents came from either Harvard or Yale except for John McCain but his being a war hero and many years of public service made him quite acceptable. Yale graduates dominates the US presidency over Harvard.

My experience with Ivy league schools, they are not smart. I worked in one of those schools and those people who think they are smart mostly have no common sense. They are bookies. If anybody smart enough to establish a school of hard knocks and purely common sense then I go for it. Parents sacrifice and send their kids to a good school like Columbia but what does those schools produce but radicals. Harvard is just Berkely of the West Coast. If true that Obama is from Harvard, then they have produced the most liberal person on earth with his association with Bill Ayres, Rezko, Farrakhan, etc. The problem really lies on this Ivy League schools who employs radical palestinian like Khalidi. I can not wait and see America being rulled by these underground characters. It would be very interesting indeed.

Not even Barack or Biden dared to question McCain’s patriotism, Yuko. McCain maybe of many things that run counter to what I believe in, but not that one. Fair is fair.

  132. Chi:

On the other hand, Chi, why do they have to make emphasis of McCain’s war record, and insult Obama for his lack of war experience. I really find it irrelevant to be calling him a patriot just because he was a prisoner of war in Vietnam, and Obama, who says he is proud to be an American, not being patriotic. It certainly is absurd and ridiculous.

Frankly, I’m allergic to Americans’ boasting of patriotism that is in fact nothing but annihilation of another race as what they did in Vietnam and presently, Iraq and even Afghanistan. It’s just too bad that a lot many innocent and even ignorant people are forced to get involved in their silly wars, my cousin, who has actually never fully recovered, included.

I would not call that patriotism that my cousin was caught in between and became one of the statistics. He told us in fact the torture, etc. he was subjected to when he was caught by the Vietcongs and imprisoned for two or three years.

At least, the US takes care of its veterans who are US citizens as in the case of my cousin, who gets a big stipend, medicare, etc. from Uncle Sam for losing his sanity, at least, much, much better than what the Philippine government cares to do for its soldiers, including those WWII veterans, who are being encouraged to act like paupers and pushed nauseatingly by Gloria Dorobo, et al to beg for even a little aid the US is willing to give them regardless of whether or not their efforts fighting for the US would be recognized by the US government.

On May 9, 2007, Edith Rodriguez at age 43 died a Martin Luther King Harbor Hospital in Los Angeles while she was already inside the Emergency Room. I really find it irrelevant to be calling him a patriot just because he was a prisoner of war in Vietnam, and Obama, who says he is proud to be an American, not being patriotic. It certainly is absurd and ridiculous.”…It’s not mean spirited nor it’s negative and importantly relevant that both men’s characters be included in choosing a leader. The one million question is, who would you choose to lead in time of war, McCain who has been tested, served America since he was 17 years old or Obama, inexperienced and never been in the battle? I believe the choice is very clear. If Obama is patriotic as he claimed and promoted by his handlers, why did he associated himself with unrepentant domestic terrorists Ayers and Dorn? And for twenty years, Obama’s religious mentor Rev. Wright spewing hate for America, inside the church, and yet Obama defended Wright of his action? Funny way of showing patriotism? I’ve seen numerous time, perhaps many of you saw it also, while the national anthem was playing, Hillary Clinton and Bill Richardson has their hands on their chest to show respect, while Obama refused to acknowledged it and kept his hands clasp together below his groin. Now that he’s running for president, Obama is playing patriotic game very conveniently. Obama will say anything to all different groups of people to just apeace such groups. Obama has no words of integrity! Obama is reminded very much of that corrupt Gloria, the one in stinking Malacanang.

  136. bitchevil bitchevil

One’s war record is admirable but not something to brag about.
Many were drafted lest that they be penalized by the government. Wasn’t Mohammed Ali charged because of evading call to military duty? America lost in Vietnam War where McCain brags he was part of. But, America should remember that tragic My Lai Massacre where thousands of Vietnamese civilians were killed by those GIs. Was McCain part of that massacre?

  137. vic vic

Canada brags about it’s Health Care System YET not too long ago a 45 year male died 34HOURS after arriving in the ER of Winnipeg Hospital.

We Brag about our health care, but we never said it is PERFECT!!! Japan, has one of the Best Health care system in the world yet it has a case of a expectant mother who died because no hospital will accept her because of lack of provider (forgot the term for that specialty). In every system there is this tiny crack, but I’m pretty sure that case in Winnipeg was investigated fully and measures were taken. It is not cheap, mind you, in Ontario alone, for the population of 12 millions the budget is $42 billions, 40% of the Provincial budget, yet believe there are waiting for elective surgery, this too is being addressed, knee and hip replacements take up to 2 years, But for Seniors and indigents it is still and the poor it is something to Brag about, especially if their maintenance medications is in the $10 thousands or more or what???

  138. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

Did McCain started the war in Vietnam or he was there only because his country called for his service? I thought John Kennedy did, LBJ exacerbated even more. When the vietcong were killing those innocent in thousand of civilians, who do you think should be blamed? In war, anything could happen, and Senator McCain just happen to be serving his country. I guess, anyone can pick and choose the talking point to make a negative attack. However, have the decency to provide facts. Senator never brag about his experience in Vietnam or his war record. However, I’m sure if the shoe is on the other foot, Obama will be bragging his war record, sadly he has nothing to brag about since he never been in the battle, except to organize some community in Chicago.

  139. vic vic

I meant if their maintenance medication is in the $10 thousands or more a year or what if there no Universal Health Care? Imagine all the pensions of Senior going to their medications, to their doctor’ bill, how about the Poor? those without jobs? how about the children who are sick? Yes, once in a while there is a failure, we do not deny it. Incompetence on the part of Health Provider, we do not Hide them, and sometimes lack of funds, our Leaders are up front with it too, espcecially at this time. But compares with most, I still say , I am very Proud of our Health Care despites the High rate of Taxes.

  140. bitchevil bitchevil

Toney, you’ve proven to be a lousy McCain campaigner. Did you listen to McCain speeches? All his speeches were about his war records…his being in Vietnam, a prisoner, tortured, scars, a tested warrior. No one said McCain started the war in Vietnam. He was just a young boy being drafted. But if he was old enough and a politician at that time, he would have supported the war just what he did to Iraq. Serving one’s country in time of war is commendable. There’s no dispute to that. But if this is the only credential a candidate keeps bragging, then you as a voter must think twice. Does one have to be in the military and been to war to be a good leader of the country? We’re not in times of war. If we were during the time of warlords and Barbarians, then we need a leader who knows military combat.
What the US needs badly today is to solve the economy; not one’s military background. And I believe Obama is the man for this. McCain is a good man…but he is 90% supportive of Bush’s economic policies for eight years.

  141. bitchevil bitchevil

One more point, a President or leader does not have to be an expert on everything. McCain could be better in foreign policy and military decisions; but Obama has legally knowledge as a lawyer. What’s a cabinet for? Obama would be surrounded by people who are experts in their fields. Obama could appoint and hire people who are experts in economy, military, foreign relations, immigration, etc. Obama knows that McCain could be of help in some fields; so he sincerely offers a job for McCain if Obama wins. What else do you want, Toney?

  142. bitchevil bitchevil

Vic, Canadian health care is the envy of other nations. As a matter of fact, Obama especially Hillary’s idea of US health care is similar to Canada’s. But, Canada’s health care has also some disadvantages. After all, there’s no perfect system. Many who abuse Canada’s system are the aboriginals. Many of them don’t work and depend on government’s help. A Canadian friend once told me that these First Nations sometimes get medicines for free and then sell them to sustain their drug addiction. While universal health care and equal distribution of benefits are good, the ones who shoulder these by paying taxes are at disadvantage.

  143. vic vic

bitchevil, yes the ministry know all about the abuses, the social problems of the First Nations and the Inuit and even the over prescription of some (medication to send to relatives overseas) but they can’t just stop these to sacrifice the whole. That is the idea of the Universality, the rich and the wealthy shoulder the Load and enjoy the most of their wealth as they will not be bothered by the masses who are content themselves. Even Doctors’ billings are mostly in an honour basis as it is very hard to audit thousands and thousands of health providers, including private clinics who billed the Health care for their services and Frauds and Scams can not be avoided in this multi billions enterprise, it can only minimized.

  144. Back to Palin, if you’re still not convinced she’s stupid, this is the latest, the transcript of the Palin-“Sarkozy” prank call:

    From About.com: Political Humor
A transcript of a prank phone call between Quebec comedy duo “The Masked Avengers” and Alaska governor and Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

    Sarah Palin: This is Sarah.

Masked Avengers: Ah, yeah, Gov. Palin.

    Palin: Hello.

Avengers: Just hold on for President Sarkozy, one moment.

Palin: Oh, it’s not him yet, they’re saying. I always do that.

    Avengers: Yes, hello, Gov. Palin.

Palin: Hello, this is Sarah, how are you?

AVENGERS: Fine, and you? This is Nicolas Sarkozy speaking, how are you?

PALIN: Oh, it’s so good to hear you. Thank you for calling us.

    AVENGERS: Oh, it’s a pleasure.

PALIN: Thank you sir, we have such great respect for you, John McCain and I. We love you and thank you for taking a few minutes to talk to me.

AVENGERS: I follow your campaigns closely with my special American adviser Johnny Hallyday, you know?

    PALIN: Yes, good.

    AVENGERS: Excellent. Are you confident?

PALIN: Very confident and we’re thankful that polls are showing that the race is tightening and…

AVENGERS: Well I know very well that the campaign can be exhausting. How do you feel right now, my dear?

PALIN: I feel so good. I feel like we’re in a marathon and at the very end of the marathon you get your second wind and you plow to the finish.

AVENGERS: You see, I got elected in France because I’m real and you seem to be someone who’s real, as well.

PALIN: Yes, yeah. Nico, we so appreciate this opportunity.

AVENGERS: You know I see you as a president one day, too.

    PALIN: Maybe in eight years.

AVENGERS: Well, I hope for you. You know, we have a lot in common because personally one of my favourite activities is to hunt, too.

PALIN: Oh, very good. We should go hunting together.

AVENGERS: Exactly, we could try go hunting by helicopter like you did. I never did that. Like we say in French, on pourrait tuer des bebe phoque s, aussi [translation: we can kill baby seals also].

PALIN: Well, I think we could have a lot of fun together while we’re getting work done. We can kill two birds with one stone that way.

AVENGERS: I just love killing those animals. Mmm, mmm, take away life, that is so fun. I’d really love to go, so long as we don’t bring along Vice-President Cheney.

PALIN: No, I’ll be a careful shot, yes.

AVENGERS: Yes, you know we have a lot in common also, because except from my house I can see Belgium. That’s kind of less interesting than you.

PALIN: Well, see, we’re right next door to different countries that we all need to be working with, yes.

AVENGERS: Some people said in the last days and I thought that was mean that you weren’t experienced enough in foreign relations and you know that’s completely false. That’s the thing that I said to my great friend, the prime minister of Canada Stef Carse.

PALIN: Well, he’s doing fine, too, and yeah, when you come into a position underestimated it gives you an opportunity to prove the pundits and the critics wrong. You work that much harder.

AVENGERS: I was wondering because you are so next to him, one of my good friends, the prime minister of Quebec, Mr. Richard Z. Sirois, have you met him recently? Did he come to one of your rallies?

PALIN: I haven’t seen him at one of the rallies but it’s been great working with the Canadian officials. I know as governor we have a great co-operative effort there as we work on all of our resource-development projects. You know, I look forward to working with you and getting to meet you personally and your beautiful wife. Oh my goodness, you’ve added a lot of energy to your country with that beautiful family of yours.

AVENGERS: Thank you very much. You know my wife Carla would love to meet you, even though you know she was a bit jealous that I was supposed to speak to you today.

PALIN: Well, give her a big hug for me.

AVENGERS: You know my wife is a popular singer and a former top model and she’s so hot in bed. She even wrote a song for you.

PALIN: Oh my goodness, I didn’t know that.

AVENGERS: Yes, in French it’s called de rouge a levre sur un cochon [translation: lipstick on a pig], or if you prefer in English, Joe the Plumber…it’s his life, Joe the Plumber.

PALIN: Maybe she understands some of the unfair criticism but I bet you she is such a hard worker, too, and she realizes you just plow through that criticism.

AVENGERS: I just want to be sure. That phenomenon Joe the Plumber. That’s not your husband, right?

PALIN: That’s not my husband but he’s a normal American who just works hard and doesn’t want government to take his money.

AVENGERS: Yes, yes, I understand we have the equivalent of Joe the Plumber in France. It’s called Marcel, the guy with bread under his armpit.

PALIN: Right, that’s what it’s all about, the middle class and government needing to work for them. You’re a very good example for us here.

AVENGERS: I see a bit about NBC, even Fox News wasn’t an ally as much as usual.

PALIN: Yeah, that’s what we’re up against.

AVENGERS: Gov. Palin, I love the documentary they made on your life. You know Hustler’s Nailin’ Paylin?

PALIN: Ohh, good, thank you, yes.

    AVENGERS: That was really edgy.

    PALIN: Well, good.

AVENGERS: I really loved you and I must say something also, governor, you’ve been pranked by the Masked Avengers. We are two comedians from Montreal.

PALIN: Ohhh, have we been pranked? And what radio station is this?

    AVENGERS: CKOI in Montreal.

PALIN: In Montreal? Tell me the radio station call letters.

    AVENGERS: CK…hello?

Johnny Hallyday is France’s biggest aging rock star. According to the BBC, Hallyday supported Sarkozy in the 2007 French presidential election.

As the governor of a state that borders Canada, you’d think that Palin would know that the prime minister of Canada is actually Stephen Harper NOT Stef Carse who is a famous Quebecois country singer.

Richard Sirois is a radio jock and not the “Prime Minister of Quebec”. Quebec is governed by a Premier.

The Masked Avengers spoke French on two portions and the translation is on the transcript.

Now who would take her seriously after Hustler’s XXX video “Who’s Nailin’ Paylin?”. She even tells “Sarkozy” “That’s good” OMG. That’s when the Masked Avengers thought they had enough and finally let her in on the joke.

I saw the vid after it was released last night but it was taken off the site when I checked as I write this. The story started with two Russian soldiers knocking on, wherelse? Her backdoor! She ended with firing their cream cannons for a facial.

If she wins, this video will be historical (or hysterical, if you like).

(Btw, if you want the link to the 20-plus minute video, just say so, I will give you the link, you might want to wait for it to be online again, hehehe)

If Sarah Palin could easily be pranked by a couple of comedians; what more real terrorists who might lead her to order attack on another nation if she becomes the President when McCain dies earlier?

    Bush hiding in the bush?

WASHINGTON — US President George W. Bush, weighed down by record unpopularity, was to stay invisible Tuesday as US voters decided the race to succeed him come January, the White House indicated Tuesday.

Bush was to have dinner with US First Lady Laura Bush and watch the election returns in the residence section of the presidential mansion, but had no plans to speak or appear in public, his press office said.

And once it is clear whether Democrat Barack Obama or Republican John McCain will be the 44th US president, Bush’s spokeswoman Dana Perino was to offer the White House’s official reaction.

So why are Canadian doctors leaving Canada despite their excellent health care? Greed, maybe?

Used of the word “brag” was not an intent to insinuate perfection in Canadian health care system. To make you and my younger sister (lives in Winnipeg) happy, I’ll change “brag” to “proud”. Cheers!

Not only doctors are leaving Canada, but nurses and other health workers. It’s all because of American dollars. Greed?
    Maybe…

GWB hides well his antipathy towards McCain. For one last act of defiance prior to leaving office, he should have campaigned for McCain on his own, even just for a day. Who knows, maybe he could have swayed some voters for the war hero.?

Who says Doctors leaving Canada? Those that left during the Cutbacks (doctors fees are budgeted and negotiated between their association and the ministries) are coming back after finding that it is not always better in the other side.

Example, a newly trained pathologist UST graduate instead of flying home after her fellowship in PA applied for Accreditation in Ontario and after a year mentorship got paid $300 thousands at Queen Vic’s Hospital in Barrie, Ontario, not bad for a very young doctor. My Sister and Brother in Law went to the States to practice medicines because they can not get accreditation in Canada during the old days, because there not much need for their services at the time, said that Doctors there hardly makes more than here. Caps limits for Family Physicians in Ontario is $500 thousands before pro-rated and higher for specialists and that is a lot for one year and they don’t have to worry if the patient is capable of paying.

why they are still leaving? one is the Weather. second, the rate of Taxes. Taxes is lower in the states and if your are gainfully employed you don’t worry about health care and education, because it could be covered by insurance and also there is public education in the state. also there are more available Jobs in the State and working Two Full time jobs is a norm for most Health care workers There..

Who says doctors are leaving Canada? The doctors say so. Many are unable to comply with the strict and different Canadian system. Most hate the high taxes impose on them. Many are over work. Anyway, I can say more and more but to engage in such talks with loyal Canadian like you would be a futile exercise.

sana maging daan ito sa mga pilipino na may pag-asa pa ang ating bansa na magkaroon ng isang lider na katulad ni obama, kaya nga hanggat maaga we nid to inform the filipino people the importance of choosing the head of our govt come 2010(at sanay may eleksiyon)

after glorias regime may magandang bukas pa ring naghihintay sa pilipino, magtiwala, magdasal at sama-samang magkaisa at magtulungan upang labanan ang korupsiyon ng malacanang mafia at arroyo corrupt-poration.

    mabuhay ka pilipino!
