Arroyo, Dureza shower media with gifts

GMA, Dureza play Santa in Xmas party for media; ref, TV raffled; gift certificates given

MINDANEWS

ALABEL, Sarangani (MindaNews/5 Dec) — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is apparently trying to woo the provincial press, holding her first Christmas party ever with provincial reporters and their families from this province, as well as those in General Santos City and other neighboring areas.

She raffled off a refrigerator, colored television, video player, cellular phones and MP4 players during Thursday’s party at Isla Parilla, an upscale scenic resort of floating cottages owned by tuna tycoon Marfenio Y. Tan. Children were handed out paper handbags containing candies and toys.

Press Secretary Jesus Dureza distributed KCC Mall gift certificates worth P1,000 each to local media practitioners after the President left for the municipal gymnasium to distribute rice, sardines and noodles to the thousands of poor people waiting.

The regional director of the Philippine Information Agency, Olivia Sudaria, read the names as Dureza handed the gift certificates, reporters who witnessed the gift-giving, said.

A total of 114 gift certificates – worth P114,000 – was handed out purportedly representing the number who registered. But reporters who were present during the distribution said, not all who stayed behind were given because at least 140 reportedly registered.

Some reporters had earlier left to cover the President’s gift-giving at the gymnasium.

President Arroyo, in a blazing red dress, arrived at the resort at 12:37 p.m., shaking hands with her guests before joining them for lunch of lechon (roasted pig), grilled tuna belly, fried chicken, among others.

At least two of the four lechon were donated by SMI mining firm but Dureza announced this only after lunch, said a reporter.

Veteran GenSan media practitioner Paul Bernandez said it was the first Christmas party ever that Malacañang hosted for reporters in the area since the time of ousted President Ferdinand E. Marcos.

Ms Arroyo neither issued any statement during her stay, nor was she interviewed by reporters, as earlier requested by Dureza, who said she was at the Christmas party only for “fellowship purposes.”

The President, however, gamely posed for photographs with the media workers and their families.

Dureza, himself a journalist in Davao City during his younger years, said the Palace wanted to “give importance to the local press to erase the perception that only the Manila-based media are superior.”

He said similar Christmas parties will be held in other parts of the country.

MindaNews asked Dureza through a text message if the gift certificates were a personal gift to the media, from the Office of the Press Secretary or from the Office of the President. As of 12 noon December 5, Dureza has not replied to the query.

Malacanang first hosted a Christmas party for members of the Malacanang Press Corps at the Palace on December 1. A member of the Malacanang Press Corps told MindaNews the President raffled off three items – a refrigerator, a television set and a mobile phone. Reporters were given a gift pack of chocolates and choco-biscuits from the Philippine Amusement Gaming Corporation (PagCor).

The Press Secretary did not distribute gift certificates, the Malacanang reporter said.

In last year’s Christmas, the source said, it was the usual: food, raffle. Then Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye did not distribute gift certificates. (MindaNews)

  2. I think this is related to the cha-cha and to her precarious hold on power.

There is a brewing coup against Nograles. Apparently, Mikey Arroyo and Luis Villafuerte think Nogi’s support of Con Con instead of Con Ass is throwing a monkey wrench into the their Chacha train.

Don’t you just love it when these thieves fight amongst themselves.

Panic is the order of the day for Arroyo and her evil minions.

  4. This action is synonymous to the Dole-Outs previously undertaken. We have been reduced to mendicants and professional slaves by this EvilBitch.

Industrialization is really far off from her small skull.

Ellen, She’s also hosting lunch for national media on Monday December 8. I’d rather play golf!

  8. So it has come to “pera lang ang katapat ng mga yan” again.

  9. Hahaha I’m sure lahat nang GIPS na yan me mga PERDIBLING nakakabit! And whoever writes a negative column, babawiin ang GIPS maiiwan ang perdible! hahaha!

“fellowship purposes” , ano yun?!

To continue to fight through the months ahead for my personal vindication would almost totally absorb the time and attention of both the President and the Congress in a period when our entire focus should be on the great issues of peace abroad and prosperity without inflation at home.”

Maybe I’ll advice our PM to do the same during the Hiatus to discourage the Coalition to pursue their plan of the takeover when the Parliament resume in January 27 and since the Auto industry especially Chrysler is about to go over, we will instead buy out all its surplus stock and give them away even to the oppositions. thanks GMA for the Idea, but where will we get the money???we spent all the funds last election and the rebates have not come in yet. (govt. is refunding half of the party expense plus $1.95 for each vote cast for the Party)

I think so too. This is for the Cha-Cha. No pun intended Ellen, but, really… I am confident that those media peeps will not succumb to gloria’s “Pera Lang Ang Katapat TakTiks”.
Though it remains to be seen in the coming days if gloria and dureza has succeeded in their objective.

Over at the Senate, Bolante asked the Supreme Court to release him from the Senate custody. Bolante is being assisted by four lawyers. Who provided him with these many lawyers? Who paid for them? Pro-Bono? Here’s another VIP criminal. He even complained of noise and asked to be transferred to a better room. Instead of jail, this crook is detained in a comfortable room. Not so much restriction. His family could visit him anytime. He would enjoy watching the Pacquiao fight while drinking beer. But let’s be on guard. He may sneak out of the Senate while people are crazy over the Pacquiao fight.

Bribing the media has been this evil administration’s policy since the beginning. They now focus on provincial media because those from Metro Manila are harder to bribe except of course those like Alex Magno. People in the provinces are not very well-informed of this government’s crimes and anomalies. They count on media. So, it’s a smart move by Malacanang to bribe them. But who knows, some of Metro Manila’s journalists are already on Malacanang’s payroll. Just read what they write.

    This was passed to me:

Subject: Why Mike Arroyo could not fly to U.S.A.

Thank you. Yes I am thankful that Mike Arroyo is barred from entering USA. What could be more eloquent, clearer that the first gentleman should cease from his corruption. This is a notice to other corrupt politicians. These days, all politicians are presumed corrupt until they have proved they are not, (the reverse). It seems that our society has accepted that corruption is a way of life.
We need outsiders to ostracize our politicians because our society even make them sponsors in baptisms and weddings. We idolize these corrupt politicians.

    Angel E.

  21. Mike Pidal barred from entering the USA? I pray this is true for this crook has the habit of hiding in SFO when he feels threatened with investigation for the illegal activities he is said to be engaged in.

  23. “Bribing the media has been this evil administration’s policy since the beginning. They now focus on provincial media because those from Metro Manila are harder to bribe except of course those like Alex Magno.”

During the holocaust, 6 million Jews were systematically killed not because of what they did, but what they are — Jews.

I may not like much of the articles of Alex Magno because of his pro-gloria sentiment, but he has good grasp of political economy and really do his research. By singling out the guy as belonging to “easy-to-bribe” (in contrast to the harder to bribe media in maynila) media personalities is not only unfair but malicious.

well, we have seen not a few media people (i like reading them) who devoted their profession in seeking every little negative issue about gloria and magnify it according to his/her own agenda. One can’t read any good news about gloria in his/her articles, as if gloria has not done any good at all in her life as president of the republic.

what’s the difference between a media pundit who deliberately highlights some good deeds of gloria and the one who selectively sees only her evil deeds?

  24. bitchevil bitchevil

deepcaring, you sure have a deep heart for that Alex Magno. So far, you’re the only one I heard of trying to defend him. Well, it’s your right. Aside from being a journalist, he was appointed by Gloria in one juicy government position. He has a good grasp of political economy that’s only favorable to his master in Malacanang. That’s all I can say. Bribery? It can be in many forms.

  25. Valdemar Valdemar

…..The reason why one can’t read any good news about Gloria is because there’s nothing good to write about her. Unless you read Alex Magno’s column or the Manila Standard paper, you can’t find any good thing about the Evil Bitch. But, thanks for writing a little good thing about your President. At least, this blog has some variety.

  32. Isagani Isagani

I don’t think Gloria can buy anything for 1000 pesos in gift certificates. If anything, tokens palang ito, maybe, if there is an ulterior motive.

Marami pa ring marangal na journalists. I am sure that they will not be easily persuaded, lalo na kasama ang pamilya, to change sentiment for cheap.

  33. bitchevil bitchevil

Like other professions, journalists also have to survive. Not everyone is like Ellen.

  35. Crab mentality is often alluded to Filipinos, but this mentality and tradition that the Magnanakaw is imposing on Filipinos is worse. This woman has perfected the system of lagay (bribery) that she calls her “loyalty check”!

What is more appropriate, holding a Christmas party and giving gifts to the members of the media or to the poor families? At least the former has something while the later has nothing. It would have been a merry Christmas for some poor families, but obviously Gloria’s way is different. It is not into the true spirit of the holidays but has more to do with blowing roses and perfumes at the backsides to make herself smells good. She assumes that the people are so dumb, ignorant and stupid that they cannot see beyond her gimmick. And to top it all the party’s expenses did not come from her own pocket. It’s still the people’s money spent for a selected few.

    Erap Mansions Revisited:
    http://www.pcij.org/blog/?p=1955

….So? I’ve visited Erap’s mansions many times. Tell me a leader who doesn’t own mansions? Does your President, the Evil Bitch, not own mansions? In San Francisco? Why not say RP means Republic of Pidal?

  42. bitchevil bitchevil

Incidentally Dinapinoy, Erap’s video explaining all the false accusations against him and the grand conspiracy in his ouster has not yet been allowed by the government to be released to the public. Here is Salonga’s book but no Erap’s tape? I’ve always maintained my position in stating that Erap is no saint; and he has committed many mistakes in his life. However, we should look at the other side of his character…his concern, care and love for the poor. This is an undeniable fact that even his foes acknowledge. What about your Evil Bitch?

  43. Do we only have two choices? Are we confined only to choose between the Evil and the Stupid?

With all due respect to everyone who still loves Erap, does he really have what it takes to be a leader?

How the hell he left Malacanan with overwhelming 11 million votes without a fight? What kind of leadership is that?

Again, what kind of leadership is that?

    Stupid!

    Pareho silang may kasalanan.

With Erap, “Guilt not proven”, or “Jueteng money is not Public Funds”, wika ni Rene.

  47. Yup, Republic of Plunder where the presidents are conceived to be robbers and thieves. Nakakahiya!!! Por dies por singko!

    Sumpit,

Bakit? Kasi base sa mga sumusunod na survey:

From Pulse Asia – Most Corrupt Philippine President

    1- Pres. Gloria M. Arroyo – 42% after 8 years
    2- Pres. Ferdinand Marcos – 36% after 20 years
    3- Pres. Joseph Estrada – 16% after 2 years

From Information Please® Database – World’s Ten Most Corrupt Leaders

    1. Mohamed Suharto President of Indonesia (1967–1998) $15–35 billion
    2. Ferdinand Marcos President of the Philippines (1972–1986) 5–10 billion
    3. Mobutu Sese Seko President of Zaire (1965–1997) 5 billion
    4. Sani Abacha President of Nigeria (1993–1998) 2–5 billion
    5. Slobodan Milosevic President of Serbia/Yugoslavia (1989–2000) 1 billion
    6. Jean-Claude Duvalier President of Haiti (1971–1986) 300–800 million
    7. Alberto Fujimori President of Peru (1990–2000) 600 million
    8. Pavlo Lazarenko Prime Minister of Ukraine (1996–1997) 114–200 million
    9. Arnoldo Alemán President of Nicaragua (1997–2002) 100 million
    10. Joseph Estrada President of the Philippines (1998–2001) 78–80 million

If the 2 surveys were consolidated, our country tops the numbers in the list of the World’s Most Corrupt Leaders. These would then be:

    2- Pres. Gloria M. Arroyo – 42% after 8 years
    3- Pres. Ferdinand Marcos – 36% after 20 years
    11- Pres. Joseph Estrada – 16% after 2 years

From the above figures, it is probable that Erap may surpass the corruptions of FM and GMA if he stayed as long as they did.

  49. andres andres

    Syria,

Even in the international press, they talk of the Pacquiao effect on crime. Wala daw krimen, dahil lahat nanonood.

    EDSA 1 – CIA removed Marcos thru Ramos, Enrile & Sin because he had a very comprehensive Industrialization Program. In 1986, Bataan Nuclear Plant is about to be switched on which could have propelled us to a tiger economy. His only fault was Imelda;

EDSA 2 – Erap had a chance for greatness but he blew it up by allowing his adversaries to do it to him. He had the mandate to decisively institute real & meaningful reforms like what the KME & Gen. Lim proposed. But what did he do? More drinking, gambling? Once you become a leader, you should get rid yourself of your vices because you are more than a role model.

EDSA 3 – Again, after the Estradas instigated the masses to attack Malacanan, where were they went? Were they at the frontlines as leaders should be? Please answer that.

And don’t label me as Evil Society. You don’t have to do that. It doesn’t help your case. Just answer those questions.

Lim at Trillanes.

During Pacquiao fight there might be “lull” in violent crimes, but what about other forms of crimes, like for example illegal bettings on the fight, isnt’ that a crime?

  58. bitchevil bitchevil

SumpPit, Erap has a soft heart contrary to his tough image on and off screen. He left Malacanang not because he was afraid; but because he cared for the people who might die in cross fire. In fact, his security including the Presidential Group were all ready to shoot the people. Also, Erap thought he was stepping down temporarily. He knew he did not resign; and at the very worst, he thought GMA would only play the role of acting President. And we all know what happened.

  59. bitchevil bitchevil

Correct, Andres…not even one of Erap’s cabinet members were involved in corruption, at least not caught. SumpPit said Erap was a lousy leader…but he had one of the best cabinet members, a very good economic team. Erap knew his limitation so he picked the right guys. Now compare him to this Evil Bitch who claims to be an expert in economy…most of his cabinet members are involved in wide scale corruption.

  60. bitchevil bitchevil

SumpPit, I agree with your assessment of the two or three Edsas. Edsa 1 & 2 had one common backer, the US-CIA. Edsa 3 was composed mostly of El Shaddai and INC members who were Erap supporters. Had INC members not instructed to withdraw from the rally, it would have been different. Instruction from the church leadership came a bit too late. Some either did not know about the order to withdraw or went through with the rest to Mendiola. It proved to be costly for INC because two or three of her members were shot and killed. The government did not realize the huge number of INC participants until after the tragic incident. Many of those taken to jail were INC members.

I observed that most of these comments about th fall of President Erap was not his mistake but a grand planned of Tabako, ano ba ang binabasa nýong broadsheet e baka ito grupo ng mga conspirators with Arroyo and her minions.

Ang sinungaling e kapatid yan ng magnanakaw…Not only once but twice, gusto pang humirit!

Every conflict and coup, FVR’s signature was on it. Whenever there was a coup, real or not, FVR usually went abroad. He returned when the coup failed or when the situation was back to normal. Didn’t you notice that?

If not for the 11 million votes Erap got, he would have also been cheated. FVR and the others tried the dagdag-bawas but Erap’s victory was overwhelming. Cardinal Sin hated Erap but could not do anything. Sin wanted every leader to kiss his ass; but Erap did not. Sin started the hate campaign against Erap even before the election. Unable to destroy Erap, Sin and his co-conspirators began plotting to oust Erap as early as his first day in office. Erap’s ouster was a conspiracy of all sectors. The only ones who were loyal to Erap were the poor masses. Those in Edsa 2 were the elite, the business sectors, church, the middle class. Very few represented the majority of the masses.

  63. balweg balweg

Korek BE…Erap is not ordinary politician like those who joined recently or bagito in the mainstream political arena.

Many people especially those elitists, civil society groups, leftists, business sectors, church leaders and other concerned Pinoys (Not all ha) are all critical to Erap. Why? Please, would you explain it well!

  64. bitchevil bitchevil

The AFP ordered ceasefire on Muslim rebels during the Pacquiao-Dela Hoya fight. The reason is of course the soldiers and rebels want to watch the fight. Christmas truce is sometimes violated but not a Pacquiao fight. Does it mean Pacquiao is more popular than Jesus to AFP, government’s enemies and criminals?

  65. bitchevil bitchevil

Balweg, Erap’s detractors keep using his human weaknesses and vices as reasons for his inability to govern. They say Erap was not qualified morally and intelligently to lead the nation. But the question is…why was Erap elected as Mayor for so many years…elected as Senator, Vice President, President without having to resort to cheating? Because people love him. It’s this mutual love between people and Erap that makes him a legend in Philippine politics. Not even Uncle Sam could destroy Erap. Erap was not well liked by Washington not because of his poor English but his nationalism.

  66. How despicable! Another way of bribing media — gift certificates, of course s less brazen than cash in plastic paper bags or envelopes.

  67. Agree with Jug — “The goal is to get Gloria out, if we have to work with Erap we will have to, but it doesn’t mean we put him back in, let him find vindication in contributing to this change.”

  68. bitchevil bitchevil

To achieve something as big as ousting the fake President, it’s necessary to work with all groups including the enemies.
That’s what they did to Marcos and Erap. Why not this time again?

  69. bitchevil bitchevil

Here’s one that many don’t know: Malacanang kept saying it had no hand in the Congressmen’s endorsement of Con-Ass; but reliable sources say that most of the Congressmen were compelled to sign the resolution in the presence of the Evil Bitch during at house of Rep. Martin Romualdez in that birthday party.

  71. bitchevil bitchevil

Erap is unpopular with the elite, church, the US and others that continue to enslave the Filipino people. He owes it to the poor in his successful political career. He was a threat to those with vested interest; so they made sure that he was out of office sooner.

  72. Kahit ano pang pagba-bribe ang gawin ni Gloria Dorobo, the number of people protesting against her rule is increasing.

Kundi maka-protesta sa Pilipinas ang mga pilipino, damihin na lang ang protesta sa ibang bansa where they are freer to express their sentiments and feelings against this oppressive government.

  73. BE: Not even Uncle Sam could destroy Erap. Erap was not well liked by Washington not because of his poor English but his nationalism.
    *****

Poor English? I don’t think so. He’s an Ateneo boy, remember? Magaling mag-English si Erap, daig in fact si Gloria Dorobo. In fact, his Erapish English was just part of the gimmick to bring him closer to the poor “masa.”

I don’t think the US did not like him for his lack of capacity to speak English. It was more because of the publicity that he was a Marcos supporter, and yes, his being one of those who signed the bill versus the US bases, nothing to do really with whether or not the Americans understand his English for I doubt that they can understand what for example FVR or even Gloria Dorobo are saying with their heavily accented English.

  74. bitchevil bitchevil

What I actually meant was that Erap’s English was not up to others’ standard. Yes, Erap speaks better English than many of our politicians? Have you heard of Apostol, Herrera’s, Datumanong’s, and other politicians from up north and down south speak?

For the record, hindi ako anti-Erap.

  77. bitchevil bitchevil

Erap’s cabinet members were persons of great integrity. People like Prof. Diokno is well respected. The ones who betrayed Erap were Orly Mercado, Fred Lim, Angie Reyes and others. The late Gen. Calimlim was all tears at Malacanang when Erap left. Calimlim was a more decent General.

Yuck! Pati sa media, graft and corruption din.

Kung sabagay, when I went to college, and I wanted to take up journalism, sabi ng tatay ko, iba na lang ang kunin kong kurso. Dati din kasi siyang peryodista but he was too honest and full of integrity, he quit the profession before he could be corrupted.

Lahing hapon kasi, mataas ang pride at sense of dignity ala-Samurai!!!

  79. What others’ standard, BE? Erap does not speak the working class English I know of. He speaks Ateneo class English as a matter of fact, a kind of standard even of the Piggy husband of Gloria Dorobo.

Asset ko kasi iyan na marunong ako ng Tagalog at Ilocano aside from a working knowledge of Spanish, French, and English and a spluttering of German. Native tongue ko Japanese, English and Tagalog, not necessarily in that order.

Daming kailangan dito. Engineers, carpenters, steel fixers, masons, electricians, welders, office staff, drivers, mechanics, etc. The project will run in a span of more or less six years.

    Wala bang palakpakan diyan? bow!

  83. andres andres

Pasensya na mga people dito sa Ellenville, its not that i am defending Erap, naiinis lang ako because it seems we are losing our focus, which is our enemy, GMA!

  84. bitchevil bitchevil

I absolutely agree with andres. Why do they keep on bringing up Erap’s name? Why compare him to the Evil Bitch. Erap was a victim instead of culprit. Justice has not even been served him yet. Real criminals like Singson are free out there enjoying their lives. And no one brings up Singson’s name!

  85. Agree ako en toto sa sinabi ni Aatty36252 Says:

    December 7th, 2008 at 5:43 am

Kawawang Pilipinas! Walang mapili sa totoo lang. Iyong matino naman nakakulong!

  89. I’m not saying that all the things they said about Erap are true. I’m just saying, if you’re the President, behave.

Illegal, yes. But it is not stealing from the poor. Value was exchanged for value. It certainly was not plunder. Nobody is saying Erap is simonpure; but accuse him of his true sins.

Erap may be accused of many things – womanizing, tolerating jueteng, etc. But he did not steal from the poor.
