Osmeña bolts LP senatorial ticket

From ABS-CBN news online

Former senator Sergio “Serge” Osmeña III has bolted the senatorial slate of Liberal Party (LP) for the 2010 elections reportedly due to a disagreement over the party’s choice to include as members some key people from the Arroyo administration.

Osmeña, who is a member of Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), was included in LP’s senatorial slate for the 2010 elections as announced by its leaders Monday.

According to a reliable source, Osmeña disagreed with the LP decision to include former senator Ralph Recto and his wife Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos-Recto in the party.

Recto was also included in LP’s senatorial slate.

The source said that Osmeña did not want be part of a slate that would endorse a former member of the Arroyo administration such as Recto.

Before joining LP, Recto was a leader of Lakas-Kampi CMD and before the merger was a member of Lakas NUCD. He also ran under the administration coalition of President Arroyo in his unsuccessful bid for reelection in 2007. He was socioeconomic planning secretary in the Arroyo administration from mid-2008 until he resigned last August to prepare for another Senate run.

The source said that Osmeña cited that Recto, when he was a member of the Arroyo administration, did not oppose the wrong policies of the president.

Osmeña also reportedly took issue to the fact the Recto had a big role when he was a senator in the enactment of the Expanded Value-Added Tax (E-VAT) Law. Osmeña reportedly said that the E-VAT is a big burden to the Filipino people.

Osmeña said that Recto’s positions were contradictory to the new politics and reforms that are being espoused by the LP tandem of Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III and Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas.

Osmeña was the campaign manager of the Genuine Opposition during the 2007 elections.

Meanwhile LP vice president Butch Abad said the leaders of the party were discussing the issues raised by Osmeña possibly to convince the former senator to return.

Aside from Osmeña and Recto, the partial senatorial line-up announced on Monday by LP included detained Brigadier General Danilo Lim, former senator Franklin Drilon, Congressmen Rozzano “Ruffy” Biazon, Teofisto “TG” Guingona III and Akbayan Rep. Ana Theresia Hontiveros-Baraquel, former Congressman Nereus Acosta, and Sonia Roco, widow of the late presidential candidate Raul Roco.

LP had decided to open its senatorial ticket to politicians outside the party calling the slate a “Peoples Coalition.” From a report of Lynda Jumilla, ABS-CBN News

Gagawin ko rin kung ako. Great move, Serge! ‘wag ka lang tatalon sa barko ni Villar, you have my vote and commitment of kampanya in my town.

That’s my kind of politician, iniluluwa ang hindi kayang lunukin!

Can’t go wrong with this man, he definitely gets my vote!!!

Serge Osmena bolts LP because of Recto!!!

    (Reposted here, Mike. 🙂 )

    Ellen,

    ano kaya? Escudero-Osmena tandem.

  4. manuelbuencamino manuelbuencamino

    ellen,

  7. Mike Mike

According to news, Sen. Serge will continue his run for a senate seat but is going independent. Let all those political parties who wants to adopt Serge as guest candidate do that, but Serge doesn’t need to acknowledge them or to be in their political rallies. Para walang commitment or utang na loob. I believe that’s what Kiko “noted” Pangilinan did in the last election where UNO adopted him as guest candidate, but he never acknowledged nor joined any of the rallies of UNO then.

  8. Bonifacio Bonifacio

Someone informed me that the reason why Pimentel supports Villar is because Villar helped finance the electoral protest of Koko Pimentel against Zubiri.

  9. Bonifacio Bonifacio

It was in the TV news that Villar visited Sen. Trillanes in his detention cell and asked him to sign the resolution but Trillanes declined.

Ito namang si Honasan, pumirma. Ngayon na nagalit ang mentor niyang si JPE, sabi he was misled daw. He was made to understand that JPE was agreeable to the content of the resolution.

    Bobo.

  10. Oblak Oblak

Financing the electoral protest of Koko Pimental is just one of the many reasons why Nene Pimentel is supporting Villar. The common denominator is always money.

  11. chi chi

Whoa!

  12. chi chi

So, karamihan sa pumirma sa reso ay nagkakanya-kanya ng dahilan when they found out that it’s so unpopular to the kapinuyan.

Ayaw man ng iba, it will be LP vs NP, with LP leading.

  15. Tiago Tiago

Yung lakas ngayon nalalagas. Kawawa si gibo. Yabang pa niya nuon na ang strength daw ng lakas ay ang numbers nila sa local goverments. wWll good luck to him. i never liked the cojuancos. Mga elitista pa din. Kelan kaya magdeclare si Chiz. He’s running out of time.

  16. martina martina

Pag walang masyadong comments, nilalangaw, laos.

The dust of” balimbingan” has not settled down yet and no definite realignment can be seen in the very near future. But there’s one thing though that is getting clearer and clearer by the day. Gloria’s boys are jumping over to the camp of Noynoy and he welcomes them with open arms. Till Election Day, almost all the president’s men and women will be with Noynoy and it will be all Gloria’s game all over again. So what happen to the transparency, moral and corrupt free that Noynoy is talking about when all the corrupt are now on his camp? It’s all crap.

Osmena switched his support to Noynoy because he believed in him. Now that he has seen a closed up of what kind of leadership Noynoy has, he lost faith, disappointed and frustrated. What better thing to do than to leave the party because he can not in any way stomach the kind of leadership Noynoy has been offering.

Noynoy is not a natural leader. He doesn’t know when to assert himself and be decisive. He can’t even say no to Palaka members known for their canine loyalty to Gloria who are moving in his camp. He is a believer of politics is addition never mind the quality.

As former PM Tony Blair said “The art of leadership is saying no, not yes, it is very easy to say yes”.

  18. parasabayan parasabayan

Nakana mo Florry! It looks like nagaaway away yung mga “big wigs” sa Noynoy camp and it seems like Noynoy is not able to contain them! This is why the people should really look hard and pick well.

Well, he has to live with his decisions.

  20. jpax jpax

I thought Serge move to LP of Noynoy because of Nonoy’s popularity created by ABS-CBN and the so called Yellow army, I was wrong pala he really can stand to his principle naman pala, more power to you Sir Serge.

Yan ba ang sinasabi ng LP na reform and new politics, hindi po ba marapat lamang na tawaging transactional politics ang pagkuha nila kay Ate Vi and Ralph Recto (packaged deal) to streghten their candidacies in batangas and Frank Drillon if I remembered correctly offered GMA to transfer the Malacanang to his province.

  21. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

In politics there is always the pure ideal to keep in mind. But no politician wins if he doesn’t compromise. For politics is the art of compromise.

Even in the private sector, in the corporate board rooms and in voting for board members, compromise is practiced. The losers have to concede to the majority who won.

So compromise is a normal day-to-day activity for anybody, not just for politicians.

The thing though is the degree of compromise one is willing to accept. This is what separates the man with more principles from the man who has little.

Even the principled Serge has compromised many times. But this was not one he could accept. There’s a limit to compromising.

  22. Tiago Tiago

For the information of others, Serge has done a lot to the people of Quezon (by the way, a stark contrast to the ever mayabang na Rep. D.Suarez), sponsoring irrigation projects. So it is just fitting not to tarnish this image by cuddling politics of convenience. Nothing against Noynoy the man, im sure he wants some kind of order to happen within the party, just that he doesnt have the stomach to lead and say this is how the party should be run. If he has the balls then, he should quit the party and run independent. His popularity is dropping, so says survey, lets see if he can keep it up till May2010.

People prefer Noynoy because they see hope in him and not because of what a political addition can bring to his campaign, as profess by others in his group.

If he is not careful or selective..Political addition for him may ended up a vote deduction in the end…

  25. olan olan

Political addition politic is condoning turncoats and butterflies..a sick way of winning the presidency!

  26. I make my choice based on 4 parameters.

    New politics vs. Winnability.

    Issues-based campaign vs. Money-based campaign.

    Platform vs. Popularity.

    Performance vs. Promise

    ******************

Which is beneficial to the country?
Which is trapo, which is not?
    Which candidate personifies which?
Who, therefore, is worthy of my vote?

  27. Kung wala talaga e di N.O.T.A.

  28. chi chi

Sa susunod na presidential eleksyon, atin na!

  29. As former PM Tony Blair said “The art of leadership is saying no, not yes, it is very easy to say yes”.

Florry, pardon my saying this but Tony Blair is the most hypocritical PM Britain ever had. He almost always said yes but he meant no. He is best described as the purest of pure horse shit.

  30. Agree with Chi, Tongue, e hindi tayo boboto nyan.… walang puwedeng iboto.

  31. florry florry

    Anne,
I’m just quoting Tony Blair. That’s his exact words and I am not refering to his kind of leadership. I know he was like a lapdog of Bush but he made sense and provide some food for thought and if he can’t equate his words with actions at least he left something to live by.

  32. Statement of former Sen. Ralph Recto on Serge Osmena’s reported plan to bolt LP:

My service in government is of public record. It is one unstained by any charge of corruption or wrongdoing.

I have always been known to speak out my mind, be it in the floor of the House, committee rooms of the Senate, and inside Malacanang.

I opposed EO 464, CPR, Charter change, the national ID system, ang pagpaslang ng mga akbista, the State of Emergency proclamation, and in NEDA, the onerous provisions of the Laiban dam contract, the ZTE proposal, RFID, SICPA at marami pang iba.

I have never allowed my party affiliation to get in the way of my principles.

I have unfairly borne the blame on a tax measure as if it was an executive decree that I signed but it was a measure pushed by the World Bank, proposed by the Finance department, endorsed by Malacanang, originated in the House, approved by the Senate. This tax measure would not have passed without the support and cooperation of the members of Congress, including contributions made by Sen. Serge Osmeña.

I did not invent VAT; it was introduced to the country when I was still in college in 1988.

My position on taxes in general is that each has an expiry date. A tax for one era might not be needed in the next. From Day One, the next administration should set out the goals of plugging tax leakages, stopping smuggling, promoting honest procurement and curbing corruption so with more money in hand it can schedule the phasing down of tax rates, not only of VAT, but of income and business taxes.

I believe that a Noynoy Aquino administration will create a healthy economy, boost business confidence, and halt corruption, moves that will engender tax obedience among the people who after seeing that the taxes they pay are spent properly will be encouraged to pay the right taxes, thus generating enough revenues that could pave the way for the reduction of tax rates, which is the best dividend the people can get for honest governance.

  33. I don’t like to comment on Recto’s participation or authorship of the VAT because I am not really familiar with it and also because I understand that VAT is a necessary levy.

  34. MPRivera MPRivera

    Anna,

    Tama ka. Necessary. Kinakailangan.

  35. Statement of San Juan City Mayor Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito:

Senator Osmeña showed he is a man of principle.

In including Ralph Recto in its senatorial slate, the LP proved it is no difference from other parties employing politics of accommodation.

Accepting PaLaKa members will not fit the image LP wants to project. How can LP, which is supposed to be the “righteous” party, promote politicians who are in conflict with their own principles?

  36. VAt is not bad per se but the one that Recto pushed was the Expanded VAT, that imposed 12 per cent VAT on oil imports.

Mar Roxas was vehemently against it because if you impose E-VAT on oil, it will affect the prices of almost all commodities.

Arroyo and Recto stood pat on it because it gave the administration billions and billions of revenue.

  37. chi chi

  38. eestrada eestrada

Let’s hope that since recto is now in mar roxas’ camp, he’ll take the latter’s position on EVAT when (and if ) he becomes senator
