Aquino on the brink of victory; Mar ties with Jojo

Last month, people say the vice presidential race would be a walk in the park for Liberal Party bet Mar Roxas as he pulled away from Nacionalista Party Loren Legarda with Pwersa ng Masa Jejomar Binay trailing behind.

But a lot of things changed with Sen. Chiz Escudero entry in the Aquino campaign and introduced an Aquino-Binay ticket. This is Social Weather Station’s latest pre-election survey for the May 10 elections.

Aquino pads poll lead

With the May 10 elections just around the corner, Sen. Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” C. Aquino III has picked up steam to widen his lead in the presidential race, results of the final BusinessWorld-Social Weather Stations (BW-SWS) Pre-Election survey showed.

Down to the wire VP race as Binay, Roxas share lead

Makati Mayor Jejomar “Jojo” C. Binay has caught up with Sen. Manuel “Mar” A. Roxas in the vice-presidential race, tying with the former solo frontrunner in the final edition of the BusinessWorld-Social Weather Stations (SWS) Pre-Election Survey.

Last Senate slot up for grabs?

Just one slot in the “Magic 12” senatorial race appears up for dispute, with recognized politicians — most of them incumbents and former senators — bolstering their hold in the rankings, results of the final BusinessWorld-Social Weather Stations (SWS) Pre-Election Survey showed.

Oh my golay, only Serge Osmena in my list lands the magic 12.

  2. Talaga, Chi.

But the more that it’s important you voted for the new faces.

Ah, that’s the only consolation in my going to the polling place this morning, Ellen. Tapos na ako, kayo naman. 🙂

    He took five bullets
His rivals have criticized him for authoring zero laws in his 12 years as a lawmaker (nine years as representative and three years as senator) and working only for companies either owned by his family (Intra-Strata Assurance Corp. and Central Azucarera de Tarlac) or were run by friends of his parents (Nike distributor Mondragon Philippines).

But what the public did not know was Aquino’s role in his mother’s administration, when, as a 26-year-old, he became the confidante of his mother who was learning on the job how to fend off coup plotters, opportunists and backstabbers in the Palace.

Aquino was hands-on in managing the security of his mother, especially after he took five bullets in one of the military uprisings staged by then Col. Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan just 18 months into his mother’s term (this event fueled his fascination for guns and military hardware).

President Aquino constantly turned to her son for his personal take on policy reforms and proposed deals which was why he has become adept in doing research on his own, a trait he would carry in the elections.

“Whenever my mother wanted a background check on someone or some project, he went to me for help. There are only a few people she trusted during those days and as his only son, it was my duty to protect her and I did,” Senator Aquino said.

  7. We find it amusing the statement of PMP Spokesman Rafael Calinisan on Jojo Binay’s upsurge in the survey for VP:

Binay should even be leading by now. No black propaganda can stop our dark horse. (GMANews.TV)

    Black na, dark pa.

The more we need to separate elections for Senators para masala :), else we’ll have what we have now! COMELEC gising!

The endorsement of Chiz boosted Binay’s ratings. The fact that the alleged shady deals and hidden assets of Binay were not exposed more thoroughly by his rivals also helped.

Maybe Mar was too decent? But exposing a rival’s shenanigans is not black propaganda.

Mar was too confident because of his wide lead? He expected Loren to slide down with Villar and forgot Binay altogether. And who would ever have expected that Chiz could go to that extent of doing him in this early. Chiz did not have to do it. But he did. The sly one is not as boyishly innocent as he looks.

  10. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

I really hope it is going to be a Noynoy-Mar team that will win. I don’t think a Noynoy-Binay win will be a good match.

If Noynoy wins and Binay wins, the first thing that Noynoy should look into is Binay’s Statement of Assets and Liabilities… and everything that is not there.

Di ko matake ang inyong LOGIC, 10-years Igan NOT 1 day or 1 week ang paghihirap ng bansa at mamamayang Pilipino.

A Binay win means there will be two Presidents: Erap and Noynoy, hehe…

It’s really depressing to see the names Jinggoy, Bong, Lito, Recto, and Pia at the top.

We need a Crusade for Suffrage of those who can ONLY read and write in this downtrodden country, we need some changes in our motherland. Keeping the status quo only asserts our complacency on how the electorate are easily bought and manipulated by the powerful moneyed politicians.

Again, this is subjective and I acknowledge the prejudicial aspects of doing this. Otherwise, que sera sera na lang.

  15. Oblak Oblak

  17. Ellen,

Could the survey results for senators be real? I may be wrong but day in day out, seems that you have the same tradpols at the top of the first 12 in the list. Is there a chance that these non-stop publications of survey results is a way of conditionning people’s minds about future final results to discourage future objections?

Extraordinary that an actor who has not achieved much as a legislator should be at the top and the usual tradpols who are highly suspect in term of ethics are there too? You’d think that by now, Filipinos would have wisened up…

  18. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

Anna, I think it is still primarily a case of name and face recall for most. A big majority as you know are not as informed or as educated, nor do they have the funds to buy newspapers.

So all they have is the TV and radio. But how many of the new and deserving candidates get sufficient TV and radio time considering the cost of exposure? Add the fact that in this election, there is a bewildering number of candidates to get to know and choose from. Makes your head spin.

  19. chi chi

Both scored 37% in the May 2-3 poll, conducted roughly a week before the elections, but SWS said it was mentioning Mr. Binay’s name first in announcing the results “because the survey gave him a 0.2 point lead over [Mr. Roxas].” -sws survey

  20. Oblak Oblak

Get from the rich, get his share and then konting ambon ng grasya sa mga taga Makati (Using ambon in relative term).

  21. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

Mar admits that he spent too much time campaigning for Noynoy that his own campaign practically got sidelined. And thus the Binay surge.

What a pity if Mar loses the Vice-Presidency. The most qualified, the most decent among his rivals. Gave up his presidential ambitions for Noynoy. Campaigned hard for his President at the expense of his own campaign..stabbed in the back by someone who wriggled himself into the LP camp and whose intention was to endorse Mar’s Villar-like rival.

  22. chi chi

When was Quiboloy’s endorsement of Mar? Kasi the INC endorse of him is still not counted yet in the survey. As Ellen said, this will give Mar about two million votes more.

  23. Phil,

Thanks for the pointer — indeed, I forgot all about the element of name recall.

Good Lord, if these tradpols do win, we’re in for another circus in Congress.

  24. Only one of my senatoriables is in the list of the top 12.

  25. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

I didn’t like Chiz before. I thought he was too sly, too slick. Too much like a snake-oil salesman. Too ready with pat monotone answers. Too ambitious.

When he bolted the NPC and gave up his presidential ambitions, I began to think maybe this man really had principles and character. I was already feeling good about him.

But that good feeling has dissipated. What he did was improper, un-gentlemanly, snake-in-the-grass-like.

I think his primary goal in wriggling into the LP campaign was not to primarily endorse Noynoy but to destroy Mar’s chances at the Vice-Presidency.

    Sly fox. Too sly.

  26. rose rose

ang ginawa ni Chiz (smiling cheez sa kodakay) ay ang paghanda niya sa pagkandidato niya for president contra kay Mar who will most likely be a candidate…in 2016…indeed he seems to be too foxy…

  27. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

Oblak, agree with you on that point. Binay will stick like a tuko to his position of power and use that power to get more power and wealth. Reminds me of someone who would use even his own frail ailing mother to win votes.

Haven’t you noticed Binay’s TV ads? It says that “with Binay, gaganda ang buhay”. He’s the only vice-presidential candidate who thinks that it is the vice-president we should give credit to if our lives improve. Has his President Erap noticed that? I guess not.

  28. Oblak Oblak

Kakosang Phil – “Has his President Erap noticed that? I guess not.” – Nagtataka ka pa?

For Erap, winning the election is only for the vindication of his name/reputation. He will be more interested in the trappings and perks of the presidency but will never care to work hard to fulfill his duties as president. I suppose, if Erap and Binay win, it will be Binay who will be the “shadow” president.

  29. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

Oblak, you got a point there. Erap will get inebriated and incapacitated, and presto…President Binay. No wonder those ads.

  30. I wonder why Adel Tamano is not making it into the top 12 — in my opinion, he should make a better senator than that actor who’s consistently doing no. 1 in the polls.

    Amazing.

  31. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/may/06/another-aquino-for-the-philippines/

The Washington Times is the mouthpiece of the Republican Party. Inroncially ,it is the Republicans who are sticklers for democratic processes and put their money where their mouth is. When Marcos was deposed, the Republicans were behind the Filipino people 100 percent.

And the Democrats? Obama and company even invited the evil bytch to the White House, for crying out loud! I just hope that this time around, they will find their mojo and help the Filipinos get rid of the festering sore that is Gloria Ampatuwad.

  32. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

The thought just struck me. Why should I worry so much about a man like Binay possibly winning the Vice-Presidency?
He will just be a spare tire with no duties unless assigned one.

If Noynoy wins, Noynoy can just keep this Villar-like fellow not in his Cabinet but in a closet where he can’t expand his wealth or his ambitions. He can meantime be investigated for his alleged unexplained wealth.

Noynoy can give Mar a good Cabinet position where he can be exposed well and prepare himself for the 2016 elections.

As for Chiz, his Brutus stab at Mar will lose him a lot of votes from the Noynoy and Mar camps in 2016. It was a major strategic mistake, Chiz.

But that’s too far off. Let’s see first if we will ever have elections at all.

  35. xonix xonix

guys calling chiz as sly and a fox, please remember who drew first blood. no other than mar when he tried to kick out the people of chiz working for the noynoy campaign.

to top it all, chiz was even the one paying for the services of his people helping the noynoy campaign while mar charges everything to the noy mar team

may i also remind everyone that when the group of chiz joined the noynoy team, villarroyo was already in a statistical tie with noynoy.

mar’s boys just sat on their fat ass thinking that victory was theirs. the same mistake he did now when he chose to ignore binay.

  36. Oblak Oblak

  37. xonix,

to top it all, chiz was even the one paying for the services of his people helping the noynoy campaign while mar charges everything to the noy mar team

Really? Wow, Chiz must be extremely rich.

Where did he get the money to pay the salaries of dozens of people (+ other ‘incidental’ expenses I suppose)…

Does Chiz have a private fortune?

  38. chi chi

That’s the news that we got from the dailies. But I believe in the rumor that someone very BIG finances Chiz group. Why?

  39. But I believe in the rumor that someone very BIG finances Chiz group.

    Utterly agree, Chi

Why?

Of course… why should he when someone else can finance the whole thing.

  40. To think that to have dozens of people and stringers on your payroll during election period must cost Escudero millions… Unless he has a private fortune (and can explain how he obtained this fortune), it’s easy to suspect that the money is coming from someone else. And if so, the people in the campaign hqs must know about it. Impossible to hide these things in Pinas politics.

  41. chi chi

Anna, speaking of the beautiful Viviene Tan…sexy noh? 🙂

  42. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

And all those TV ads of Chiz endorsing Noynoy (worth millions) were paid for by Chiz?

And I suppose those TV ads of his endorsing Binay were also paid by Chiz?

And also his TV ads endorsing Tito Sotto for senator?

How about those TV and radio ads of his endorsing a partylist group?

Indeed, Chiz must have quite a fortune.

  43. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

The other day I heard a radio spot.

It was Chiz doing his similar spiel on TV asking “Sino ang Presidente ko?” I was surprised it did not mention who his President was. No mention of Noynoy. Instead the ad mentioned the name of a party list group.

    Strange.
