Thanks Manny Pacquiao for a hassle-free Sunday morning

Thanks to Abs-Cbn online for Reuters' Steve Marcus photo
Boxing is too brutal a spectator sport for me but I’m thankful for the Pacquiao-Marquez fight yesterday.

No, I didn’t watch the third encounter of our very own Manny Pacquiao and Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez. But I enjoyed the free-flowing traffic because almost everybody was glued to television starting early morning. I left Las Piñas 7: 30 a.m. for an 8:30 a.m. breakfast meeting with friends at Italianni’s at Greenbelt 2.

I took the bus and made it to Makati in less than an hour!

There was a little problem though because Italianni’s was reserved for those who wanted to watch the fight so we transferred to Mary Grace, where we had a delightful breakfast of bangus and Vigan langgonisa concluded by hot chocolate and ensaimada.

I passed by Mercury Drug Store for my medicines on my way home and there were only two customers.

I would not have such an enjoyable morning if not for Pacquiao. Can’t we have a Pacquiao fight every day?

Facebook was full of commentaries about the Pacquiao-Marquez fight with many of the instant analysts saying that Pacquiao ‘s victory this time was not convincing.

Sportswriter Michael Martinez captured in his Fox News story the atmosphere at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas:

“ Manny Pacquiao lifted his arms in triumph Saturday night, but any joy he might have felt was tempered by an unusual sound inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

“Boos. Lots of them. For him.

“Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez engaged in a scintillating 12-round fight, but the result left a sellout crowd of 16,368 less than satisfied.

“Why? Because even though Pacquiao won a majority decision from the three judges, the feeling throughout the arena was that Marquez should have won.”

The New York Times’ Greg Bishop said it was Marquez who controlled the fight. “ Pacquiao did not look like a 9 to 1 favorite, but perhaps Marquez had been undersold, underestimated, all along,” he said.

Days before the, Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach predicted Manny would finish Marquez in six rounds, “four or even earlier,” Bishop said.

Veteran boxing analyst Ronnie Nathanielsz said in an ABS-CBN interview said Marquez had no chance with Pacquiao. “How can you pick Marquez who is going up in weight, who is aging, who is slower, who gets hit much more today than in the past?”

So overconfident were members of Team Pacquiao that Bishop said they “had wagered large sums on an early knockout, at 18 to 1 odds.”

Their over expectation was buoyed by the visit of Marquez’s longtime trainer, Nacho Beristain, to have Pacquiao’s autograph on souvenir boxing gloves.

Was it a ploy by Beristain to make Pacquiao overconfident?”

After Pacquiao was declared a winner, Beristain, called the result of the fight “a joke.”

Amid the controversy, Pacquiao’s ,”I clearly won the fight” statement sounded desperate.

(In a dig to the false report about Oprah rooting for Shamcey Supsup instead of the 2011 Miss Universe Leila Lopes of Angola, there’s a joke going around the social media: “ Oprah Winfrey says Pacquiao clearly won.”)
What now?

Reports said Marquez was so disappointed, he is thinking of retirement. “”I need to sit down with my family and my camp and make a decision about whether to continue in this sport,” he said.

While there were some who said that yesterday’s fight should tell Pacquiao to retire from boxing and concentrate on his work as a congressman, the Champ wants to go on. “I can fight any fighters as long as there’s no problem with my promoter. It depends on Bob Arum,” he said.

Arum, this early, is talking of a fourth Pacquiao-Marquez encounter: “I am bound and determined to find a definitive winner once and for all. If I can get both fighters to agree, I’d like to do a fourth fight once and for all,” he said.

Fox New’s Martinez talks of a “a payday of $10 million or more” to change Marquez’ mind.
More probably for Manny, the Champ.

I look forward to another hassle-free Sunday when Pacquiao meets Marquez, Part IV.

Pacquiao beats Marquez, but even many Pinoys disagree

    http://www.gmanews.tv/pbr/article/238391/sports/pacquiao-beats-marquez-but-even-many-pinoys-disagree

Other papers say it should have been really Marquez or at least a draw!

Pacquiao also knew it but instead said “It’s very clear that I won the fight.”

This early, Pacquiao showed his TRUE character ALL because of MONEY! Is this the kind of HONEST person eyeing for the highest position in 2022 the people would choose to elect?

Anyway, congratulations, Swab-it Swingson. Again, you again won millions courtesy of inuuto mong kinumpare.

    Kapal ng apog mo!

patunay na kahit kababayan ay HINDI kumbinsidong nanalo si pakyaw:

“I really prayed hard before the decision was announced,” Gertrudes Posadas, 50, said. “I was saying the rosary and was asking for a draw.”

Just like you Ellen, I really am not an avid fan of this very brutal sport. It is only when I am with a crowd watching the fight that I may join in. I just watched boxing during the time of ALI.

Pacman is a very ambitiuos man. That is remarkable! But listening to the CNN interview and that of Piers Morgan on his plan to be the president in 2022 gives me goose bumps. He has to educate himself in all aspects. He has to learn to communicate better otherwise there will be anothe “joke” book thicker than that of Erap.

Nakakainis nga Magno kung totoong si Marquesz and nanalo. Even our own sports commentators are saying that Marquez won and not Pacman. Ang pera nga naman. Baka naman USO na rin ang LAGAY sa boxing kahit na ito ay nasa US. And to think that Pacman, in his interviews, harps on changing the Philippines by stopping corruption. SUS! Start with yourself Pacman. You are surrounded by the most corrupt government officials who are womanizers and gamblers. Birds of the same feather flock together. Good luck on your ambition to be the President of the Philippines! How many Filipinos can you pay to vote for you? Kailangang lumaban ka pa siguro ng 10 taon to have those “lagay” monies!

  6. Pacquiao-Márquez judges send rotten smell wafting over Las Vegas
    by Kevin Mitchell
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2011/nov/13/pacquiao-marquez-world-title

Only a charlatan, a politician or a boxing promoter could tell the world that congressman Manny Pacquiao deserved to get enough votes for a majority decision over Juan Manuel Márquez. The fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday night was billed as a trilogy for the ages but it ended in a scandal as controversial as a backwoods election…

The fight engrossed rather than thrilled. Purists will have delighted in Márquez’s lovely feints and the way he glided in an out of range to tease Pacquiao into mistakes. Pacquiao can rarely have missed so many times. Certainly in the 24 rounds they had boxed before this fight, he was a buzzsaw; now, refined and more conventional, he could not match his opponent’s more orthodox skills, his hurtful counters. For that alone, he deserved to lose. The bruises around his face and the cut above his right eye told him that…

Pacquiao needed a knockout in the last and he lost the round. But he did not lose the fight because boxing did not want him to. He was more desperate than earlier but no nearer to finding a rhythm. His wildness was embarrassing for such a high-calibre operator, a great champion who might soon have to confront some tough truths.

Much was expected of him. And he didn’t live up to it.

He himself said he was all fired and mad at Marquez for insulting his manhood. He said he would settle doubts once and for all.

Roach said it would even be possible that Marquez would be knocked out in the first round.

Pacquiao was the 10 to 1 favorite to win.

And all that… and all that…

And all he could manage was a 12 round decision. Not even a single knockdown.

Time to retire the Pacman. With this performance, I don’t think he can beat Floyd. He has lost his zip and sting. Too many things on his mind. No more focus. Not that hungry anymore.

  8. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

He should retire and focus on local politics, if he wants to. Please, no national positions. And please not the Vice-Presidency or the Presidency.

Pacquiao’s ambitions have to be tempered. In one interview in the US, he said he wants to be the model, the example of what a politician can be. Not like the other politicians, he said.

Thinks he is a saint, doesn’t he? Thinks Filipinos are idiot voters. Or is he right?

Time to bring him down to earth.

    Phil,
To be fair with Pacquiao, I think he still has a couple of years to defend his belts. Too early to retire IMO. What happened to his last fight if the tsismis is true, is that he had a fight with his wife Jinkee and trainor Alex Ariza (see my #3 post with link) so the dismal performance. Of course, having said that, that’s no excuse since everyone, especially his adoring fans was expecting him to be his usual best.

As for politics, I suggest he stays out of it, even local. Just enjoy his billions and maybe do some charitable works. And stay out of trouble. 😉

  10. MPRivera MPRivera

After the last round, Pacquiao was already prepared to accept his loss, hoping only for a draw decision from the judges. Proof of it was when he went to Marquez’s corner and shook their hands clearly congratulating them for the good fight Marquez showed. Also, his appearance while praying in his corner showed he only hoped for a miracle to happen, a draw at least to salvage his hold on his title.

Anyway, if the Compubox tally was the final basis in declaring the winner, we should respect it UNLESS that Compubox was also BRIBED.

    Heheheh.

  11. acibig acibig

the reason manny won was REPUTATION, meaning everything being equal, reputation was an advantage that went his way, kaya ayan, clean your act, tama na ang pambabae, tama na ang politics, FOCUS on what you excel— BOXING, pag yun eh nawala, that will be your end, ayan now there is DOUBT, kung ikaw ba naman eh nag retire, you retire with NO DOUBT that you are the greatest boxer

  12. Let us not be swayed by emotions. Let’s go to the official scores. The MGM crowd was obviously Mexican, they were cheering every hit, EVEN if it was Manny connecting, haha.
    **************

Go check the OFFICIAL (I cannot over-stress that) scorecards. If the fight was stopped in ANY of the rounds, the judges’ scorecards will still have Manny winning. The best point for Marquez was after Round 8 where official scores have 2 judges scoring a draw at 76-76 while Trowbridge scored 77-75 for Pacman, Manny still wins this.
    ***************

Let me remind you that in the first fight, a DRAW, one referee committed a mistake by scoring the first round 10-7 when there were THREE KNOCKDOWNS. Should’ve been the standard 10-6 thus breaking the 113-113 draw the judge had submitted for a split decision victory for Pacman. Pacquiao accepted the decision and even forgave the judge who apologized later. He moved on. Marquez, the crybaby he was, (and still is) still claims to this day he was “robbed” in that match.

There’s clearly a whale of a difference in character. After Sunday’s match, the sore loser who drinks piss PRAISED himself, the real champ knelt down and PRAYED.

  13. Again, by the judges’ scorecards, Manny had won 3 rounds (1st, 3rd, 6th) “unanimously” meaning all the 3 judges favored him with 10-9. Marquez also had won 3 rounds (4th, 5th, 7th) “unanimously”. ALL the other six rounds had Manny winning 2-1 over Marquez.

Numbers don’t lie. “El fallo del juez es inapelable”.

Magno mentioned Compubox, the computerized scoring system which had Pacquiao winning in all departments. In close matches where there are no knockouts the punchstats are accurate 97% of the time that is why top sports orgs pay much to have Compubox punchstats in their live coverages or post-fight analyses. HBO, ESPN, NBC, even individuals like Bob Arum and Freddie Roach subscribe to their service. The breakdown per round is posted here: http://goo.gl/L6ekZ

    Again, numbers don’t lie.

I have the photos of both raw Compubox Punchstats and Judges scorecards, not online worksheets, which I will email to Ellen to maybe include in this blog post.

Tongue, kahit ako ay matabang ang pagtanggap sa panalo ni Pakyaw subalit kung iyon ang tunay na kinalabasang pinal ay wala tayo sa posisyon upang kuwestyunin ‘yun patunay pa ang Compubox results which prove kung sino nga ang dapat na manalo puwera na lang kung ‘yun ay preprogrammed and also not a result of dagdag-bawas.

Even Pakyaw himself did not expect na panalo siya which I stated in upstair comment.

Sri Lankan yata yan.
Basta sa atin panalo kayong mga pinoy.

Boxing is a mans’sport and I am neither a boxing nor Pacquiao fan but we have to give credit to where it’s due. It’s Pacquiao over Marquez, that’s how I saw it. Pacquiao deserved it.

Marquez as we all know is a sore loser. Up to now he continues to claim that he was robbed of victory in their first two matches. It’s not surprising then that he is sour-graping again that he was robbed the third time.

If he really believed that he was robbed in their first two fights, the onus was on him to prove once and for all that he really won those matches. He was the one who is always grumbling, who has a grudge, and with something to prove. He should have fought and slugged it out aggressively, but what we saw is an almost immovable fighter who just planted his feet and only moves when chased by the more aggressive Pacquiao. He almost never launched an attacked except a couple of times and just stands there in wait. It’s true that he landed some solid blows, cut Pacquiao’s brow but not from a punch but due to a head butt and after the final bell, the accounting of hits and punches, showed that he got more than Pacquiao and that decided the fight.

There are always two sides in a fight, the winners and the losers. And also there are always sore losers and sour-grapers. Marquez and his supporters are at it again. Well he had his chance to bolster his claims but his efforts are not enough to prove that he won all the three matches.

Marquez should do a better boxing next time around if ever there’s one more time.

  20. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

A fourth match will most likely turn out to be just as boring as the third. Both fighters have met their match in each other. Neither could do much to really hurt or knock the other out. So that “decisive” victory each is promising to deliver will still be elusive.

Pacquiao is not getting any younger. He is not getting any hungrier. He is not getting more focused on boxing. He is getting more focused on so many other things. He is not the same Pacquiao as before. He seems to be going downhill.

So if one cares for Pacquiao we could tell him that the best thing for him is to retire before he gets pummeled by Mayweather. But if he wants to really fight the guy, who are we to object? That’s what everybody has been waiting for.

But let’s remember that Mayweather convincingly defeated Marquez. Pacquiao did not.
