Hacking negates convenience credit card offers

I don’t do online purchases for fear that information about my credit card would be mis-used.

That’s why I was surprised and outraged when I got a notice by email the other night that I was being charged two purchases, $39.99 each totalling $79.98 almost $80.00 or P3,600.00.

The items downloaded were both Disney story time from ITunes.

I don’t do business with I Tunes and definitely not with my credit card.

My BDO visa was hacked!

I reported the fraud to Apple.

I also called up BDO which confirmed the two charges. The customer officer said they will investigate the subject of my complaint and the first step was for me to accomplish the Dispute Form they would be sending me. Meanwhile, they said they would be blocking my account.

Hacked!
Hacked!
They also said they would still be billing me for those fraudulent purchases.

I told the customer officer that I will not pay for those items I did not purchase. I also terminated my account.

When you do business with a bank or a credit company, you are assured that your account is secure and they have installed safeguards to protect your account.

BDO did not safeguard my account. I should not be made to pay for their negligence.

I shared my experience with a friend who said her daughter’s friend also has the same misfortune. Her credit card was BPI’s. She was charged 656 Euros (equivalent to almost P34, 000) for a purchase which was impossible for her to have made because she was here in the Philippines.

Used responsibly, a credit card offers a lot of convenience.

One, it allows you to bring small amount of cash and still do important purchases like groceries.

Two, you can buy items on sale or things that you have been looking for when you see them even if you don’t have cash on hand. (During my student days, I would try to save money for books I’d like to buy. But by the time I had the money, the book was no longer available.)

I find credit cards very useful when buying airline tickets in advance.

Three, I get a lot of reward items like SM gift checks for BDO credit cards and appliances for Citibank cards.
But hand-in-hand with the convenience that technology offers are risks posed by malevolent minds. It’s condemnable that some people use their skill and expertise in information technology for devious ends.

If credit card companies cannot safeguard their clients’ accounts, consumers have no other recourse but to go back to pre-credit card days.

It’s inconvenient, yes. But maybe it’s good. We would be spending less.

I still can’t understand why it is happening and if it did takes a complex process to settle.
Ellen me and my five Siblings do just about all our transaction on line or in store by Credit cards or debit cards and pay our bills on line and so far not one incident of fraudelent transaction occurred. I once attempted to w/draw some amount in non familiar ATM and what I got was a notice to call my Bank and Did and after some verification they told me that its security suspected something afoul because of the unfamiliar Pattern. And it unlocked my account.

Carrying cash nowadays is scary and it you lost it there is no way to tell that if found it is yours.

Ganyan din dito but easily corrected. Twice hubby’s Chase card was charged $2.99 when Chase account at Target was hacked. Since then, he monitors his plastic everyday.

A lot of people here do not carry plastics anymore, I see them paying in cash everywhere. They do not trust credit card companies, besides they have control of their expenses.

We rented a cabin in Ashville. The owner called us if we could pay in cash daw because they do not accept credit cards, they do not have bank account also. Nakatago lang sa bahay pera nila like the old days.

We buy a lot of things online, pero sa trusted stores lang and mostly paid through PayPal. Ayos naman.

Sometimes its also low tech. You give your card to the waiter, he takes a picture of your card, he uses your card to buy songs in itunes. I’ve been a victim of this itune scam too. I know it has to be the restaurant employees since i used a new card. There were no other charges there except the restaurant bill. The next month, i got the itunes charge. credit card numbers are bought and sold online. Some struggling company buy the numbers to get rid of the inventory. They will send the product to you. I didnt tell the credit card company that the product was with me. It will just make things more complicated.

Bad news for the Filipino kawatans, panhandlers, wallets will be obsolete. 2020 target date

    Most governments around the world are eager to transition to a cashless society as well for the following reasons;

Cash is expensive to print, inspect, move, store and guard.

Counterfeiting is always going to be a problem as long as paper currency exists.

Cash if favored by criminals because it does not leave a paper trail. Eliminating cash would make it much more difficult for drug dealers, prostitutes, kidnappers and other criminals to do business.

Most of all, a cashless society would give governments more control. Governments would be able to track virtually all transactions and would also be able to monitor tax compliance much more closely.

Sa madaling salita ay BIG BROTHER IS ALWAYS WATCHING. LOL

Even fast food restaurants now have their own card that can do the job by WiFi and can. E refilled on line or can even use the smart phone. PnB remittance charges less for fees if using debit Cards instead of cash as it saves on armour carrier Transfer of Cash. Cashless is convenient Safe and less Dead Tree.

  8. I only use credit card to pay for my PayPal account which I use to purchase online. Nobody else has touched my card. I’d rather withdraw from the ATM and pay my purchases in cash.

Your card is not safe, even in the issuing bank itself. Call center agents, Back office clerks, and other 3rd party employees collect your data and sell those to buyers.

  9. I pay my bills in SM or ATM. Even airline tickets, I don;t buy online. I go to PAL offices.

You are right, no card is really safe.
