My question to God: why did you give us President Duterte?

President Duterte asks if there is God at the oathtaking of Malacanang media.
President Duterte asks if there is God at the oathtaking of Malacanang media.
President Duterte finally hit the highest target: God.

After taking on the holiest of the living figures – Pope Francis; the president of the world’s superpower – U.S. President Barack Obama; and the Secretary General of the United Nations – Ban Ki Moon, he had ran out of adversaries.

The leader voted by “the National Aeronautic and Space Administration as the best president in the solar system”- a title Duterte fanatics applauded and shared in social media, went beyond earthly realm and questioned the existence of God.

This happened last Monday in Malacañang during the induction of the Malacañang Press Corps, Malacañang Cameramen Association, and Presidential Photojournalists Association. As usual, he talked about the flak that he was getting because of his war against illegal drugs.

He complained that Filipino do not seem to fear the law. That’s why, he said, he wants the death penalty restored.

Death penalty was abolished under the 1987 Philippine Constitution written after the ouster of strongman Ferdinand Marcos. It was restored during the administration of Fidel V. Ramos, a former military officer.

The first and only execution under the restored law was under the administration of Joseph Estrada, a former movie actor who played toughie roles on screen.

Executed was a house painter, Leo Echegaray, convicted for raping and killing his 10-year old stepdaughter.

Death penalty was suspended by President Gloria Arroyo in 2006.

Duterte said death penalty was not effective as a deterrent to crime because it was not imposed. “Every president along the way would just say: one, because of the Catholic Church; second, the bleeding hearts, because only God can kill.”

He said he has a problem with that argument: “ Ang problema niyan, I ask you, what if there is no God? So you allow the criminals, and yet because there is a God in all… karamihan sa atin dito, eh ngayon kung walang Diyos and we are here in this Earth, in this planet supposedly made by God? So where is now God? “

He cited the case of an 18- month- old baby “taken from the mother’s arm, brought under a jeep and raped and killed.”

“So, where is God?” he asked.

He didn’t say where the incident happened. He cited the atrocities committed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

“So, where is God? My God, where are you? I believe in God, but that is my perpetual question to him. Where were you when we needed you?” Duterte lamented.

He further said, “It’s not enough to say, at the end of the day, at the end of the world, He shall come to judge the living and the dead. What will be the purpose of all of that, if the heartache, sorrows and agony have already been inflicted upon the human beings in this world?

He remarked about the general attitude of Filipinos that, “Ganoon ang buhay – that everything begins and ends with God. So therefore God knew at that time when he created this planet that these things will happen. “

Like many Christians, my faith in God includes not being able to fathom his design for this world. Like why did you give us President Rodrigo Duterte?

Just like Asia and Europe had Atilla the Hun at one time, Filipinos have to endure Duterte for the next 6 years. However as the old Filipino saying in Spanish goes: “No hay mal que por bien no venga”, something good might come out of a desperate situation.

“He complained that Filipino do not seem to fear the law. That’s why, he said, he wants the death penalty restored”.

Where is GOD daw? He can be every where. Even in Hell. The fires of hell proclaims the Glory and Holiness of GOD.

Yung 18th old month baby. Where is God daw? Hindi ba’t binigyan siya ng magulang? Nasaan yung magulang?

  3. Golberg Golberg

Where is GOD daw?

Lumabas pa nga yung katagang “The voice of the people is the voice of GOD.” What the heck!!!

Where were you when we needed you daw?
Iniisip ba SIYA may problema o wala? Iniisip ba siya may sakit o wala?

Sabi nga ni Batang Pasig, “just like Asia ang Europe had Atilla the Hun”.

Iyan na yun, SCOURGE OF GOD.

A true Christian believer would not say the words Duterte said about God last Monday. Duterte could be an agnostic, at the least. Change has come, indeed.

  6. Golberg Golberg

May isa pang headline.

Tapos tinatanong niya, Where is God?

  7. I watched that awarding ceremony on TV.

I just hold onto the saying:
“All the lessons of history in four sentences: Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad with power. The mills of God grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly small. The bee fertilizes the flower it robs. When it is dark enough, you can see the stars.” – Charles A. Beard

Yan din ang naisip ko Tonque while watching the video.

May nabasa akong balita sa social media, “a Chengdu J-17 fighter aircraft of PAF crashed because of power malfunction while on a routine patrol on the Arabian Sea. The pilot managed to eject and is now the subject of SAR of PAF and Pakistan Navy.”

“It is the 3rd reported crash of the said fighter aircraft in a span of 4 days.”

    #11. Hahahaha!
Bibilhin niya lahat ng warfare sa China para gamitin ng ating militar pero nunca na sasakay siya sa anumang made in China. He knows so well mamamatay siya.

  13. I’m sharing here some of the letters I got related to his column. One if from F.X. Ernest Loignon who attached an article which I’m also sharing here.

    Ernest said:

Further to your last column, if I may.

This young author, Etienne de la Boetie, friend of Montaigne, five hundred years ago, asked the same question and wrote at 18 years old “

I should like to understand how it is that so many men, so many villages, so many cities,

so many young nations, sometimes suffer under a single tyrant who has no other power than the power

that they give him, who has the power to harm them only to the extent to which they give him the

willingness to bear with him, who could do them absolutely no injury unless they are prepared to put up with him
    rather than contradict him…

It is a brief but dense read, one of the first major political work as important as The Prince of Machiavel.

    Have a good day

I think God has ‘malready spoken why we had a Duterte as President. He was clearly voted overwhelmingly by the Filipino people.

So if we have to question God on why we have Duterte as our president, I say “Vox populi, Vox Dei”.

Let him do his job and let God judge him for whatever sins he may commit in dispensing his duties and resposibilities to the Filipino people.

P.s. By the way I am not a Duterte supporter. But I begun to like him because I saw the goodness in this man more than the evils that his critics are mouthing about. He is a man of his word. He is doing what he promised. I dont mind if he speaks dirty for as long as he does what he has to do to serve the people.

    God bless us all.

  15. From Pepito Tayag:

This is one of the most ill-conceived questions I have seen so far.

As Joseph Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict) wrote, God gave us not just consciousness (life) but creative freedom, the kind that opens the door to/produces other freedoms. Think being free to love, to make personal choices, to expand your world; the freedom to seek that which makes you a happier and more fulfilled being. That freedom is the characteristic mark of the Christian belief in God. You are free. God does not bar you from choosing- He gave you FREE WILL!

Extending that freedom to Duterte, it’s clear that the FILIPINO PEOPLE FAILED THEIR OWN SELVES BY CHOOSING DUTERTE. Don’t blame God for the choice that you guys made. God gave you the freedom to choose between good and evil- and the Filipino people chose the evil one, who masqueraded as otherwise.

Why you chose Duterte is really the question you should be asking. Because God did not give you Duterte but rather you picked him, the question now requires internal reflection – what is it about the Filipino psyche, the Filipino spirit that more often leads them the same path over and over again? Think back to the many politicians who have abused their trust or even those who are currently stepping over their boundaries and contributing to the environment of pain and suffering in the Philippines. Did those people get to sit where they are now purely on their own steam? No. The Filipino people put them where they are, and gave them the power they are now wielding to choke down the people.

It may be that the Filipino people have lost their way. Perhaps it’s time to make a conscious rendering of where you are as Christians. Perhaps the Filipino people are no longer ‘living their faith’, noting that being Christians is not just about prayers but faith in action.

FREE WILL. Remember that next time you make the wrong choice and want to blame God for it. God only gives what is good- anything evil is not of His making. It’s your own making, your failure to live up to what you were created to be. Even then, let’s not forget that God never closes the door on anyone. He is there, especially in your failures. So seek Him and work to re-direct your path to what is right sand pleasing to Him, and you will find your ‘compass’ back.

  17. useyourbrain useyourbrain

Duterte as ‘best president in the solar system’ and people believed it, applauded it? I’m sure that was meant as a joke, even a derision, a ridicule. Goodness! This is clearly one of the reasons Duterte won- the ignorance and lack of understanding overwhelming the Filipino society.

Oh, in case Pinoys don’t understand..a true and effective leader “CREATES AN INSPIRING VISION OF THE FUTURE, AND MOTIVATES PEOPLE TO ENGAGE THAT VISION”. Does that sound like Duterte? I didn’t think so. He uses fear to DISENGAGE the Filipino people and give him room to manipulate the country according to his own warped ideas.

    sayang.

    tsk. tsk. tsk. tsk.

  19. MPRivera MPRivera

    sayang talaga!
