Ang likuran ng bahay namin sa Antique ay palayan ng aming kapitbahay. Sunod ng palayan na yan ay tabing dagat.Napakagandang tanawin.

Nang tumawag ako sa aming kapitbahay ilang araw dumaan ang mabangis na bagyong “Frank”, sinabi niya na ang palayan doon sa likod namin ay punong-puno ng putik at mga kahoy na galing sa bundok. Malapit kasi sa sapa yung palayan na yan.

I have a few in my list and one of them is P.O. Domingo.

I first met P.O. when I was covering the education beat in 1984. He was representing the Dalupan family in the controversial and failed attempt of the Maharishi to gain control of the University of the East.

Press statement from the office of Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV on the dismissal of the Supreme Court of his petitition to be allowed to perform his job as senator:

behind-bars2.JPGRegardless of the circumstances, be assured that this Senator will continue to serve you.” These were the fighting words from detained Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, upon the announcement of a Supreme Court decision barring his attendance of Senate hearings.

The 16-page unanimous ruling affirmed the decision of Makati Trial Court Branch 148 Judge Oscar Pimentel Sr. against Trillanes’ petition to be allowed to attend all Senate functions, to have an office in his detention cell, and to receive members of his staff in his detention office.

On Friday evening, as we in the media prepared the news-record of the nation’s last workday and looked forward to easing ourselves into the weekend, a coup was sprung on us: a court ruling going against us and kept secret since its promulgation seven days earlier was released that evening — released not by the court itself but by the chief of the metropolitan police, Gen. Geary Barias, himself a beneficiary of the ruling, being one of the defendants.

‘Education for All’ goals unlikely to be met

With seven years to go, the Philippines is in danger of not meeting all the targets that have been set for countries to provide “Education for All” by 2015.

“Education for All by 2015 – Will we make it?”, a midterm review of progress across the six EFA goals released recently by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization or Unesco, said the country is “at risk” of not achieving the goals on adult literacy and gender parity.

Adult literacy in the Philippines stood at 93 percent in 2004. But the number of adult illiterates stood at 3.78 million in 2004 and is projected to rise to 4 million by 2015. Forty-six percent are females who can’t read, write or count.

Patay ang demokrasya sa desisyon ni Judge Reynaldo Laigo ng Makati Regional Trial Court branch 56 sa class suit na isinampa ng mga mamahayag tungkol sa nangyari sa Manila Peninsula noong Nov. 29, 2007.

Kinampihan ni Laigo ang ginawa ng Philippine National Police sa pangunguna ni Police Director Geary Barias ng National Capital region na pag-aresto at pagposas sa mga reporter pagkatapos ng insidente kung saan sina Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim at mga Magdalo officers ay nag-walkout sa hearing sa Makati RTC at nagpunta sa Manila Pen kung saan hinikayat nila ang taumbayan na talikuran si Gloria Arroyo.

Two dismaying court decisions

This is another sad day for democracy.

The Supreme Court junked the petition of Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV to be allowed to perform his duties as senator.

A Makati Regional Trial Court, meanwhile, dismissed the class suit filed by members of media and concerned citizens against government offficials responsible for the former’s arbitrary arrest and handcuffing duringthe Nov. 29, 2007 Manila Peninsula incident.

Update: ABS-CBN suspends Ces Drilon

Television network ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. will investigate the conduct of kidnapped journalist Ces Drilon to determine whether she breached protocols on news coverage that led to her kidnapping last June 8.

“There is a process of investigation and I don’t want to preempt that process. At the end of that, we have to find out if the proper process was followed by Ces,” network chair and chief executive Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III said at the sidelines of the ABS-CBN stockholders’ meeting Thursday.
