The 7 most frequently asked political questions for 2007

By William M. Esposo
The Philippine Star 12/31/2006

Going into the New Year, the political scenario promises to be as exciting as the past two years – ever since Virgilio Garcillano came into vogue. I have been asked the following questions which I now endeavor to answer to the best of my ability to monitor and forecast political trends and events.

2007 Political Risks Q and A

Q: Will there still be restiveness in the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) after the post-February 24, 2006 clampdown and the arrest of the escaped Magdalo soldiers before the SONA (State of the Nation Address) in July of 2007?

ISAFP’s orgasmic revelry

This picture was taken during the “Long Live the Emperor” Christmas party of the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippinees where ISAFP Chief Delfin Bangit gave out gifts (cash and appliances) furiously as if money would be abolished tomorrow.

Military sources said the funding for that party came from “the top”.

Puno: DILG moved Smith late night to avoid traffic

Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno thinks we are all stupid. Ginagago tayo.
Read this story by Norman Bordadora from the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Tarra Quismundo said the operation was done in 30 minutes. Really well- planned.Click here.

Update: Gloria Arroyo didn’t know of Smith’s transfer to US Embassy- Ermita. Click here.

INTERIOR Secretary Ronaldo Puno yesterday said it was his office that decided to hand over American Marine Daniel Smith to US custody and this was in line with a Malacañang decision to comply with treaty obligations, to which President Macapagal-Arroyo agreed “in principle.”

Puno and Interior Undersecretary for Public Safety Marius Corpus said that the transfer pushed through late in the night to avoid security complications in case the convoy bearing Smith had to go through heavy traffic between the central business district in Makati and the US Embassy compound in Manila.

Tessie Aquino-Oreta, Sen. Nene Pimentel, Sen. Serge Osmeña at Rep. Dilanggalen.

Smith back to US custody

Lance Corporal Daniel Smith, convicted for raping a Filipina, was returned to the U.S. custody despite decisions by the Makati Trial Court and the Court of Appeals that he should stay in Makati jail.

The manner Smith was returned to US custody, surely with the approval of the executive department, is another demonstration that jungle justice reigns supreme in Gloria Arroyo’s administration.

Following is Inquirer’s story on Smith’s return to US custody:

Myself, Elsewhere

That’s the title of the book of Carmen Guerrero Nakpil, launched at the Havana restaurant at Greenbelt, Makati the other day

It’s not accurate to describe Mrs. Nakpil as one of the best Filipino writers because she is comparable with the best in the world

“Myself, Elsewhere” is both an autobiography and a memoir of old pre-war Ermita which is no longer visible to today’s generation.

Class suit versus Mike Arroyo

Some 60 journalists and concerned citizens , including yours truly, yesterday filed a civil class suit (click here) against Mike Arroyo before the Makati Regional Trial Court.

In the suit, we contend that Mike Arroyo, spouse of President Gloria Arroyo, is both a public figure and a public officer.

Update Jan. 09, 2007: Mike Arroyo asks court to dismiss class suit.

We said that the libel suits he has filed against 45 journalists is a “clear abuse of right and an obvious effort to obstruct, defeat, and/or violate the Plaintiffs’ constitutional rights “ and obviously intended “to stifle and/or chill the exercise of freedom of the press, thereby causing them grave injury and tremendous amount of money”.

Garcillano: I can win without cheating

Rep. Neric Acosta(LP) should be worried.

Here’s a report from ABS-CBN:

Former poll commissioner Virgilio Garcillano confirmed Thursday his candidacy as 1st district representative of Bukidnon in the 2007 May elections, saying that he would win “without cheating.”

“I am [running as] congressman [in the] first district of Bukidnon… I have decided to run,” he said in an exclusive interview with ABS-CBN Regional Network Group.
