Cervical cancer-free PH by 2040

The Department of Health is aiming high: By 2040 they want a cervical cancer-free Philippines.

That means there no more new cervical cancer cases that number about 7,000 a year.

That means thousands of husbands would be spared of the grief of losing a wife, of children losing a mother, of parents losing a daughter, of kins losing a sister or aunt.

There’s no letting up for “Tour of Hope” bikers in informing the public that there is a way to defeat cervical cancer.

If last Wednesday’s launch is to be an indication of this year’s Tour of Hope, participants are in for an exciting, enjoyable, meaningful cycling event once again come March.

Tour of Hope is a cycling event which aims to increase awareness of cervical cancer premised on the belief that being informed is being armed and empowered to fight the disease which is the second most common cancer worldwide (first is breast cancer).

This year’s Tour of Hope which has adopted the theme “Fighting Cervical cancer in Full Circle” will traverse Tarlac, Dagupan, La Union, Dagupan and Baguio on March 20 to 24.

Best practices in cervical cancer prevention to be recognized

On Friday, the Cervical Cancer Prevention Network or CECAP will once again give recognition to outstanding projects designed to make cervical cancer a thing of the past.

It will be the third year that awards for best practices in cervical cancer prevention will be given. But unlike last year which was just a forum, Friday’s activity will be a whole-day event. There will be a conference of experts and advocates, exhibits and a mobile clinic to be held at the Philippine General Hospital on Taft Avenue.

There are plans to have the mobile clinic inaugurated on Thursday.

CECAP is an alliance of organizations from the private and public sectors committed to eliminate cancer in the country. It is one of the projects of the Cancer Institute Foundation (CIF), a non-profit, non-stock foundation that provides support to the PGH Cancer Institute and its other accredited cancer management network institutions.

Tour of Hope 2009

There’s a way to enjoy the summer sun and still do something for the less fortunate: get involved with Tour of Hope 2009.

On its second year, Tour of Hope is actually an information campaign about cervical cancer through cycling. The five-day cycling event will start in Alabang, Muntinlupa City on May 24 and end in Camarines Sur on May 28.

Taking the Southern Luzon route, the tour will cover 500 kilometers of the country’s scenic countryside including Tagaytay,Lipa,Lucena, Daet. In every stop, there will forums on cervical cancer to be participated in by personnel of the Philippine General Hospital Cancer Institute and Bravehearts, a non-government organization Bravehearts dedicated to raise awareness on
cervical cancer prevention.

As you are reading this, a Filipina is dying of cervi-cal cancer. And what a waste because cervical cancer can be prevented.

Biking enthusiasts will go on a tour for a cause from Vigan to Subic from Sept. 13 to Sept. 17 to raise awareness and funds for the prevention and control of cervical cancer in the Philippines.

At the launching of “Tour of Hope” last week, Dr. Cecilia Llave, head of the Philippine General Hospital Cancer Institute, gave an overview of the cervical cancer situation in the Philippines.

She said every eight minutes a Filipina dies of cancer.
