As calls for Gloria Arroyo’s resignation, to avoid another extra-constitutional regime change, mount, Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye again brought out fantasy mantra: “President Arroyo has a mandate to serve until 2010.”
It’s good that he brought that up because this is a good time to once again to trace where that so-called “mandate” came from.
The blatant bribery that took place in Malacañang last week, which underscored the depth of moral degradation Gloria Arroyo has dragged this nation down, was in connection with the “scandal-ridden joke of an impeachment”, in the words of House Speaker Jose de Venecia.
The magic of the paper bags full of money ranging from P200,000 (what Cebu Rep. Tony Cuenco got) and P500,000 (what Manila Rep. Bienvenido Abante got) worked because “scandal-ridden joke of an impeachment” reached the House Justice Committee. Gloria Arroyo is now effectively immunized from any impeachment attempts for one year.
By gaining a one-year respite from impeachment through her “impeach me” initiative, Arroyo bastardized the impeachment process, which the eminent constitutionalist Fr. Joaquin Bernas said is included in the Constitution “to save the nation from one who does not deserve to be in office.”
Why did Arroyo and her allies come up with an “impeach me” initiative at a time when the opposition was not hot on it yet? NBN-ZTE project.
The Senate investigation has so far established the role of forced-to-resign Comelec Chairman Benjamin Abalos in another scandal-ridden P16 billion telecommunications.
Former Economic Planning Secretary Romy Neri told the Senate that he informed Arroyo that Abalos offered him P200 million to have the NEDA board approve the project. Arroyo, Neri said, told him not to accept the bribe but instructed him to approve the project with ZTE, a Chinese firm.
Arroyo did not castigate Abalos about the bribe offer and even pushed for the approval of the project. So interested was she with the project that she left the bedside of her ailing husband at St. Luke’s Hospital for a 17-hour trip to Baoao, China to witness the signing of the agreement. She did it “like a thief in the night,” according to a press release on that trip by the Malacañang press office.
Everybody was asking, what was the business of a Comelec chair in a telecommunications project that had nothing to do with counting votes. That was what we thought.
It turned out that it had a lot to do with counting votes, especially those that were not cast by the voters. The answer was in the “Hello Garci” tapes. “Pipilitin po natin Ma’am”, the unforgettable words of former Comelec Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano. The will of the people was thwarted and Arroyo was proclaimed winner of the 2004 elections when the whole nation was asleep.
Arroyo was in a position to manipulate the 2004 elections including the massive diversion of agriculture, road users, and Philhealth funds for her campaign and election operation because she was in power despite the fact that she was never elected to the presidency.
Riding on the anger of the people on incompetence and perceived corruption in the Estrada administration, Arroyo grabbed the power from the elected president, Joseph Estrada in January 2001.
So, what mandate is Bunye talking about?

Your 10 commandments are good and I don’t really care whether the 10 you put up there are the right ones or not because as I said, they’re ok – just thought I learned the sequence differently as a Catholic.
I am a Catholic and I learned the sequence differently but no quarrel with yours. There’s only one God as far as I am concerned and that’s what matters.
And I say, Allāhu Akbar!
But can’t really attest if the Catholic one is the right order because I wasn’t in Mt Sinai when Moses received the commandments.

In act there was a movie named “The 7th Commandment” and it was about adultery. And that makes “Thou shalt not kill” the 6th Commandment.
You bet, there is only One God. As Christians, we call Him, God the Father, while the Moslems call him “Allah!” and the Jews, “the Great I Am”!!!

Actually, I find these verses in the Scriptures that aptly fit to describe the criminal squatting at the palace by the murky river and the Lord definitely hates: (Prov. 6:16-19) These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

I was in grade school when they showed that movie, “The Ten Commandments.” I remember wondering why it sounded so different from what I learned in Catechism prior to receiving my first communion were the Commandments of God. I actually wondered about the missing graven image part and the doubling of the commandment on coveting what others have.
Those little things in fact made me curious and desirous to read the Bible in full. For my 12th birthday, my father gave me one of those Bibles being distributed by Gideon, and then my search for the truth began.
It was worth it.
Matt. 6: 33: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
By the way, Anna, it is not my 10 Commandments. It is God’s.
I cannot own it. I can only just obey.
I have actually included the verses in the Scriptures where the Commandments are written.
I suggest to everyone to read them as they include promises for obeying them as when God says, “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.” (Exodus 20:12)

Not really interested in movies. I’m happy with the Catholic Church’ sequence of The Ten Commandments. No need for me to seek out others.
They say it all and that’s fine with me. I suppose that should not be a problem with anyone here, not even you.
The Ten Commandments are only among the many commandments of God. So, let’s not limit ourselves into obeying just the 10 commandments. The problem with practicing Christians is that they tend to be selective in their obedience to God’s teachings. Pinipili lang ang gusto nila at convenient sa kanila. Iyon mga mahihirap gawin at sundin, hindi na sinusunod. I think that’s wrong.

I don’t have the pretention or even profess to obeying all the 10 commandments solidly so why dig for more commandments? One step at a time… If you are able to follow all ten of them, you must be a saint!
That’s the objective in fact of following the Commandments, Anna—to be a saint!!!

AdeBrux, I’m only able to follow nine commandments. I’m still trying to obey the remaining one. Mine was just a general statement that we should not limit ourselves to just the 10 Commandments. Di ko maintindihan kung bakit ka nag-react ng ganoon.
