Former AFP Chief Angelo Reyes commits suicide in front of mother’s grave

May you find your peace with the Lord.
Former AFP Chief Angelo Reyes shot himself in front of his mother’s grave at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina.

He was brought to Quirino Memorial Hospital where he expired. It happened minutes past 7 a.m.

Retired Navy Commodore Rex Robles said he talked with Reyes yesterday noon. He sounded worried. He said Gloria Arroyo called him up recently.

1. She wanted to know who was the mistah of Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV who delivered his (Reyes) letter to the senator asking him to reveal who was behind former military comptroller Carlos Garcia.

2.Arroyo also wanted to know why Robles was attacking Paranaque Rep. Roilo Golez.

Robles said he was with Reyes two nights last week.

Health Secretary Enrique Ona who was at the hospital gave the official medical bulletin that Reyes was pronounced dead officially at 8:32 am.

Ona said that Reyes was Dead on Arrival from a single bullet wound in his heart. it ws about 7:45 a.m. He had no blood pressure, cold and clammy, no vital signs, no longer breathing. But doctors tried to revive him for 45 minutes.

The past weeks, Reyes has been embroiled in the issue of corruption in the military after he was named by retired Lt. Col. George Rabusa, former AFP budget officer, as having received P50 million as send-off money upon his retirement as AFP chief in March 2001.

Rabusa also said Reyes was receiving P10 million a month as allowance. His wife was also getting travel and shopping expenses from him.

Reyes’ name surfaced in the congressional investigation on the controversial plea bargaining agreement forged between the office of the Ombudsman and retired military comptroller Carlos Garcia.

Reyes was AFP chief from July 1999 to March 2001. His abandonment of his commander-in chief, the elected president Joseph Estrada in January 2001, led to a change of administration and the installation of Gloria Arroyo, then the vice-president as president.

Under the Arroyo administration, he was held various cabinet positions: defense, interior and local government, environment and energy. He tried to enter the House of Representatives via a sectoral group of transport operators, 1-UTAK but was disqualified.

According to the memorial park caretaker, Reyes with his aide and four members of his family arrived past 7 a.m. at the grave of late secretary’s parents – Pablo and Purificacion Reyes. The day before, the caretaker said Reyes was also there.

DZMM showed a blood-splattered tombstone of Reyes’ mother. Also found where Reyes’ fell was a pocketbook, “The Art of the Deal” by Donald Trump.

Towards the visit, when his companions were walking towards their vehicle, the park caretaker said, Reyes asked for private moments in front of his mother’s grave. He saw Reyes sitting. Then he heard a deafening gunshot. Police recovered an empty shell of a .45 calibre pistol.

DZMM was able to interview Rabusa, who is Reyes’ kumpare, expressed shock and grief. He said, “Nalulungkot ako. Hindi ko akalain na mangyari ito.”

Communications Secretary Ricky Carandang said, “The Palace condoles with the family. We ask the public to respect the family’s desire for privacy. Give them time to grieve.”

Carandang said President Aquino is scheduled to meet the cabinet security cluster today and the Garcia plea bargaining agreement was inthe agenda. He said Reyes death would surely be included in the discussion.

Robles, who said he was Reyes’ “yearling” in the Philippine Military Academy, declined to comment on Reyes’ death at the moment except, “I’m so happy now that Golez got what he wanted.”

Golez has been a strong critic of Reyes.

OMG! Was he murdered or he killed himself? An autopsy will confirm this. What a way to go…For more than a decade, he took advantage of a rotten system and got all the juicy positions and millions to boot. Now he is dead. May this be a lesson to those who have yet to find the straight path. Crime really does not pay. Someone may kill you or you simply opt to kill yourself because if you will be alive, it will be a gruelling ordeal. I wonder what is going through Mrs Reyes’ mind now. If only they can turn back the time, they probably would not do the same thing they did.

Hmn.

  2. That’s what real soldiers do. Gen. Garcia should follow his example.

But i won’t expect the same thing from the Arroyos.

  3. Isagani Isagani

    Sino susunod?

  4. truthseeker truthseeker

Unbelievable ! Not the kind of Angie who would kill himself. His behavior and arrogance in the past make me wonder if indeed he committed suicide. How could he shoot his heart? Why not his head? Many questions need to be answered.

I would like to believe it was a hit to silence him. There were some powerful above him who also benefited from the corruption. Until his last breath, he still was protecting his boss. No difference from Neri and Abalos.

The question is what comes next. If Angie killed himself because of his guilt and conscience, he should have revealed everything at least in writing.

Anyway, may he rest in peace.

  5. parasabayan parasabayan

I was just about to say that I hope he left a suicide note with all the facts of where all the loot went. But before this expose explodes, all his immediate family should find shelter in a place where they can be secured. My wish is for Mrs Reyes to turn a state witness to expose all those who took advantage of the system. Tuloy tuloy sana ang mga investigations. While dapat nakikiramay tayo sa family ni Reyes, we too should not let our guards down.

If only he used his brains and his capabilities to build his country, instead of sucking the country dry, he would not have ended his life this way.

Save yourself before it is too late!

  6. hawaiianguy hawaiianguy

    Tsk,tsk, tsk.

Maybe he committed a harakiri, knowing that he would be pinned down. The evidence spilled by Rabusa is strong, according to Enrile. I think Reyes knows his end is near.

I don’t think those other kurakots will do a Reyes. They would rather kill other people who criticize or oppose them.

What’s Gloria thinking now? That’s a good question.

  7. Isagani Isagani

What’s Gloria thinking now? Minus 1 loose end. Unfortunately for her, there are many more remaining.

Lately, there was a suggestion to investigate and call the Generals’ mistresses. During the hearing, it was learned some contractors used pretty women to corner contracts and they were dealing with AFP Chief of Staff.

Sana sumunod na sina Climatu, Villanueva at iba pa. What happened to Reyes is similar to Mafia killing one another or committing suicide to keep the secret code. I’m sure some people close to Reyes who he trusted knew the secrets. Reyes could have shared some info with them when he planned the suicide. It was not just a spur of the moment. He went to his mother’s grave to confess and ask for forgiveness. But that’s cowardice.

  9. parasabayan parasabayan

Meron kayang mga witnessess na nagpakamatay siya?

Sabi ni putot, “good riddance”! This is very insensitive to say but, since she was the head of the mafia, what else is there to say?

  10. parasabayan parasabayan

  13. truthseeker truthseeker

Please don’t think I’m being insensitive. Could it be his dead mother was so mad at him that her spirit grabbed his gun and shot him?

Yes, who was or were the witnesses who saw him shot himself? At this point, it’s all speculations. But we should not discount the possibility that he was shot by someone else.

Once the Police declare it as suicide and the case is closed, we won’t hear from it anymore.

  14. These are going to be very turbulent times for Aquino, I pray that will be blessed with courage, fortitude, and wisdom to lead us through these troubled times.
If all goes well, the presidency will have been liberated from this age old stranglehold of powerful men and genuine civilian authority will rule.
May Reyes’ soul rest in peace. “when bells for us are rung and our last taps is sung, let generations see our country free.”

Question: Do people of Reyes’ stature carry firearm despite having bodyguards? If his sons and aides saw him carried his gun for the first time, that should have aroused suspicion.

  17. henry90 henry90

When all is said and done, I feel pity for the man. His was a twisted take of the Code of the Bushido – Death before Dishonor. But all that is water under the bridge now. May God have mercy on his soul.

  18. vanilla vanilla

Maraming pinoy ngayon nagtatanong, kailan kaya magpapakamatay si Gloria? Wishful thinking!

Walang remorse eh at mahilig magnakaw. She probably breathed a huge sigh of relief with Angie’s suicide.

  19. You’re spot on, henry90. This case is a twist of the code. This one is Death after Dishonor. Forgive me, but no pity here.

  20. Mike Mike

    # 19:

VIP’s don’t usually carry guns when they have bodyguards with them. But I’m sure they own several guns, especially Reyes who is a former soldier. And yes, they can and will bring with them their guns if they “need it” for something.

  21. governor governor

It won’t be too difficult to determine if it’s a suicide or not , i guess. We can leave that issue to the forensic experts. They will know whether he fired his gun or not.

Anyway, human nature would tell us that anyone who feels great shame would succumb to enormous pressure of humiliation and anyone whose conscience is clear would stand up and wage war against his accusers, albeit i would have to make an exception on this because there are people who are simply blind to their own faults. Mr Reyes could have done the nation a great favor if he left a a tiny book of revelation about this corruption in the military. All the same, suicide is still a selfish thing.

  22. I’ve never been comfortable with death, my first encounter was when my best friend accidentally shot himself when we were hunting back in the 6th grade. Then grandparents, uncles, aunts, father, more friends, these past few years I attended wakes of friends who either got shot or died of heart attack…I don’t wish it on anybody even my enemies…

  23. Golberg Golberg

Question: Do people of Reyes’ stature carry firearm despite having bodyguards?

Sabi nga ni AT4, “you have no reputation to protect.”

  24. henry90 henry90

I understand Tongue. I pity him because as a Catholic, I was taught that committing suicide is without forgiveness. Sensya na tao lang. Kahit gaano kadugo ang panlalait natin sa kanila dito sa Ellenville, we do so without personal animosity and rancor against them.

  35. Arroyo went to Quirino Memorial Medical Center. Also former Exec. Secretary Mike Defensor.

Reyes’ family, through spokesperson Patricia Paza, asked for privacy for the family. She said the family will issue a statement later.

  36. From Newsbreak:

“Wala na ito pare. There is a program to eat me.”

The late Angelo Reyes would utter these words again and again to his longtime friend and Academy upperclassman, retired Navy Commodore Rex Robles, in the days following the first Senate testimony of Reyes’s former budget officer, retired Lt. Col. George Rabusa.

Reyes felt the die was cast, and that the ongoing inquiry would not just drag the military but his entire family down. “He was depressed,” Robles told Newsbreak.

The Senate hearing yesterday particularly singled out Reyes’s wife, Teresita, who was a close friend of another military wife, Erlinda Ligot. They were known ballroom dancing and traveling partners.

As someone who has his own intelligence network, Reyes knew that in due time, the investigation will bring out even “personal details” about his family, according to Robles.

After lunch also yesterday, Robles said Reyes got a call from former President Arroyo, apparently asking him about what he was planning to do in the wake of the investigation.

In particular, Robles said Mrs. Arroyo asked Reyes about a supposed letter he had sent to Sen. Antonio Trillanes last year, challenging the senator to name names and identify already the “man” behind former military comptroller Carlos Garcia. That letter was hand-delivered to Trillanes by a Trillanes classmate at the Philippine Military Academy, according to Robles.

It’s Robles’s theory that there is another “powerful Arroyo man” behind Garcia. But Trillanes has already said repeatedly it was Reyes.

Following Rabusa’s first appearance at the Senate, Reyes was “just gloomy” and refused to leave his home, according to Robles.

“Hawak nila ang lahat. Wala na ito (They control everything. I have reached a dead-end),” Reyes would constantly tell Robles.

Reyes and Robles go a long way. Robles, who graduated in 1965 at the Philippine Military Academy, was Reyes’s “yearling,” a PMA lingo for an upper class cadet assigned to take care of a cadet one batch younger.

Robles said he tried to put things in perspective for the retired chief of staff, reminding him of the book that Reyes himself had given to him titled “Gamesmanship.”

One option they discussed was for Reyes to call for an executive session, a closed-door hearing with the senators and congresspersons. But even that did not seem palatable to Reyes.

Robles said he told Reyes it would help if he considered this episode as a “game” and that “he should play along with it.”

“But I saw darkness, that he felt it was a dead-end for him,” Robles said. “He would always say, wala na ito, tapos na ito.” – Glenda M. Gloria

hindi susunod si putot…sa takot lang niya mamatay…she does not want to be cremated…at isa pa kung magpakamatay siya may mga ilan na kakanta ng “alleluia” at maging holiday sa Pilipinas..a big celebration…
..totoo na in the Catholic Church hindi acceptable ang suicide…pero para sa akin, God in His unconditional love for us all, Reyes may have the grace to say “Oh Lord, forgve me”..before he breathed his last.. hindi ba si Judas ay nagpakamatay din? ipagdsal natin siya at ang kanyang familia…

  38. I really hope the authorities will conduct a “proper” and thorough investigation on this matter. By proper, I mean, they should focus on getting evidence and facts rather than just make a lot of noise. Noise will just breed so many theories and as convoluted these theories get, the more confused matters become, making it impossible to solve the case.

  39. governor governor

Philipine politics is an excellent proof of mockery of justice. The whistle blowers of these irregularities are victims, used by the very institution they serve and by the government they belong to. No investigations will be credible and conclusive, no matter how strong the evidence is against a corrupt official, or no matter how many whistle blowers appear and ready to talk, if the government or instituion itself is not ready for reforms.

  42. truthseeker truthseeker

Let’s hope that the case does not die with Reyes. Robles knows a lot about Reyes. Robles might be the key to unmasking the highest. Why did Arroyo show so much interest in Reyes even asking what letter he sent to Trillanes? Since everyone knows the big boss is GMA, calling Reyes a couple of days before his suicide is suspicious. Siguro ang sabi niya: “Hoy Reyes, huwag mo akong isabit ha?”

Expect Reyes camp to blame his death on Jinggoy. It was Jinggoy who started all this thing. Now that Reyes is gone, Garcia must now tell everything.

  48. truthseeker truthseeker

I’m not naive. There are deeper things that you and I do not know. Even the toughest military officials become soft when it comes to their spouses. Pong Biazon is a tough guy. For Reyes to allow his wife to live such an extravagant lifestyle, he might be soft on her. As the saying goes, behind a man’s success is a woman or wife. In like manner, we can say that behind a man’s failure and sins is a woman. Adam sinned because of Eve.

  49. truthseeker truthseeker

As for Trillanes, he might have an ax to grind against Reyes but he knows there are others higher than Reyes involved.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines, its officers, civilian employees, and enlisted personnel, we are shocked and saddened by the passing of Gen. Angelo Reyess, our former chief of staff, and the secretary of national defense.

We condole with the family of Sir Angie, this incident adds another dimension into to the ongoing investigation for members of the armed forces and the whole nation quest for truth and justice.

In the light of this incident, we hope that Congress and the Senate can expedite the proceedings to ensure enactment of laws in furtherance of good governance that will guide the armed forces and the dept of national defense.

He could have ended up smelling like a rose if he did a Rabusa. He could have rectified his sins by cooperating for the sake of truth, justice, and the cause of the men in uniform. He could have expunged the mud on his family’s name and honor. Because everybody makes mistakes. What matters is being man enough to admit and atone for those sins. He lost all opportunity to redeem himself and become a real officer and a gentleman. He died just an officer. May he rest in peace.

  76. Trillanes not responsible for Reyes’ death, not sorry for feud

    By Maila Ager
    INQUIRER.net

    First Posted 14:41:00 02/08/2011
Senator Antonio Trillanes IV was not sorry about his feud with the late Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes as he did not also feel responsible for his untimely demise.

“No definitely not,” Trillanes told reporters when asked if senators should feel responsible for Reyes’ death after they grilled him in the Senate over the alleged P50 million send-off money that he received when he retired as chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

“Remember that General Reyes is a graduate of PMA [Philippine Military Academy]. He used to be the chief of staff of the AFP so he went through all the pressures necessary to survive those chapters in his life,” he said.

Trillanes did not also agree to Senator Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan’s statement that Reyes was subjected to a trial by publicity that could have been one of the reasons why he committed suicide.

“No. I believe we’re not doing anything different,” said Trillanes.

“Remember, we also went through the same thing back in 2007 .We were subjected to even worse trial by publicity. We faced the government propaganda there and we were even incarcerated seen and a half years after and we’re still here. So maybe there’s another mission for us to accomplish and sad to say, that’s just life was meant to be for Secretary Reyes,” he said.

The senator was detained for the failed coup attempt against then President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. He was granted provisional release in December last year and was later granted amnesty by incumbent President Benigno Aquino III.

Asked if he was sorry that he had a bitter exchange of words with Reyes when they faced off in the Senate, Trillanes said, “No kasi sabi ko nga [like what I said] I’m the kind of person who would learn from lessons of life and we’d have preferred that things have ended in a more pleasant route but that’s just how life was meant to be.”

Asked about the reported phone call of Arroyo to Reyes at the height of the Senate investigation into the alleged military corruption, “Maybe that’s an angle that we could pursue after we have mourned the passing of General Reyes.”

  77. Mike Mike

    @ Ellen, #75
Correction: It is they, the Pidal mafia who pushed Sec. Reyes to his grave. It is them who tolerated all the shenanigans of the AFP and which they could be part of. If not for their lust for power & money, all these investigations in both houses should not be necessary.

  78. Mike Mike

Why should Sen. Trillanes or other senators and congressmen who participated in the hearing be sorry about Sec. Reyes’ death. It’s their job to investigate in aid of legislation. The people who voted them expected them to do so. The one who should apologize are the Pidal mafia. They started this.

  79. parasabayan parasabayan

No one really witnessed the “suicide”. The kids were like 50 meters from him and his bodyguard was about 5 meters from him according to the guard at the cemetery. They just heard the shot. It is sketchy whether or not he killed himself. Baka may nakasingit nuong umalis yung mga anak and the guard was not looking.

  82. parasabayan parasabayan

ALL THIEVES, whether in the military or politics should follow his example, just one bullet in the head or the heart. Too bad most of these thieves are cowards but would rather enjoy their ill-gotten wealth.

    Reyes was guilt ridden.

Admiral Jeremy Boorda, the only enlisted personnel to became Chief of Naval Operation in the U. S. Navy (will never be duplicated in my opinion), shot himself in 1996 for being guilt ridden about a single medal he wore which he never earned. To be clear on this, he earned the medal but the main issue raised by an Army Colonel was the letter “V” attached to his medal. Before the media vultures
were about to feast on this very hot expose, he wanted no part of the imminent charade. Admiral Boorda could have flipped the bird to the Colonel and retired…he was just guilt ridden.

Sabagay TB. No crime is unpunished. And because Reyes is perceived to be corrupt, we do not know if we should be happy he is now gone.

Sometimes, it is the women who are behind the success of the men. But is some instances, dahil nasosobrahan, the women become the demise of the men. Such is the case with the Reyeses, the Garcias and the Ligots.
Siyempre super lungkot si Mrs and maybe if she can undo what had been done she would but it is too late. Repentance comes last.

I see this suicide as resulting from his moral weakness, nothing heroic about it. Although he was not the beginning of this corrupt system of pabaon, he turned a blind eye to it, and worse he betrayed the Constitution.

  94. Statement of Rep. Mikey Arroyo:

Those who demonized, embarrassed reyes on live TV to up their political capital, they pushed him to his grave.

Mikey Piggy Arroyo Jr is an idiot! Angie Reyes demonised himself. If he has any brain in the right place, this idiotic moral dwarf should realise that Angie Reyes committed suicide after speaking to his mother. It probably was his mother who drove Angie to do the inevitable when Angie realised that he was now on his own. Piggy Arroyo himself should commit suicide and be done with it.

  95. Friend rang me up this morning to ask me if I knew that Angie Reyes committed suicide (and of course, I didn’t know — hadn’t accessed Ellen’s blog yet) and asked me if Angie committing suicide was believable.

My answer: Yes because Angie was one man who always went over the top, a man who was always intensely on the edge even over the simplest of things, a man I’d say who was into dramatics.

By committing suicide, he perhaps thought he’d save his family from further embarassment and save the material riches he got for them.

  96. Ellen,

Btw, how did he shoot himself? By putting the gun in his mouth, his head or somewhere else?

Agree with NFA. Nothing heroic in Angie’s final dramatic act.

Brave of him though to turn that gun against himself.

  97. i beg to disagree, it was a heroic act – it rid the country of at least one big fish (you know, the ones people are always complaining about that never get caught?)

  98. Trillanes did not also agree to Senator Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan’s statement that Reyes was subjected to a trial by publicity that could have been one of the reasons why he committed suicide.

    Excellent reaction by Trillanes!

    Anyway, Honasan is an idiot.

  99. triggerman925 triggerman925

Let’s not forget that the main issue in the congressional and senate hearings is Gen. Garcia and the plea bargaining with the Ombudsman. The problem is that Jinggoy and Trillanes used the senate to get back at Reyes. They exerted all means to pin down Reyes and make it appear that he was the force behind Garcia. They were successful in the sense that in our eyes Reyes is a villain.

What Robles is saying is very logical. Was Reyes that powerful that the Comptroller can deposit and withdraw hundreds of millions from government and commercial banks at any given instance? It may be true na naambunan sya maski papaano but I don’t think he was the one calling the shots here. Kailangan pa bang sabihin kung sino?

  100. Senator Trillanes must stay the course… Reyes committing suicide must not deter him from digging the truth. Let the axe fall where it will.

Come hell or high water, Trillanes must stay the course. Soldier on sailor!!!

  101. Al Al

Re #110, Kung na-ambunan siya, as you want to believe, siyempre alam niya ang nakakuha ng jackpot. Why didn’t he tell the people?

He brought to his grave what he knew and for that,he deprived the people of the truth. Up to the end, he didn’t serve the people well as what is expected of a PMAer.

  102. Ellen,

Would be good to know what Edong Ermita has to say about all these happenings, including about Angie’s suicide.

Edong, being a military man and once undersecretary of natl defence, rising to the ranks as right hand man of Gloria naturally, had close links to military echelons.

    # 81 Statement of Rep. Mikey Arroyo:

Interestingly, Romulo Neri also vowed to bring whatever he knows about gma and fatso to his grave.

I’m amazed sa tindi ng hawak ni gma sa mga tao nya. I suspect that gloria has dossiers about these people kaya may hawak syang alas palagi.

  107. Ellen,

What could Rex Robles mean when he said, “I’m so happy now that Golez got what he wanted.” ?

  108. NFA rice NFA rice

Why do I think his suicide is without honor? It’s like he’d rather be dead than face the accusations, the ultimate form of injustice. That’s selfish to say the least.

From his example, I understand now why suicide is a grave mortal sin in the catholic church!

  109. triggerman,

  111. jawo jawo

It is a paradox that with all the sterling educational background that Reyes had as detailed by his lawyer like a resume, he ended up like a thief in the night not being able to cope with the monster he created of himself unlike when he did when Gloria offered him what he thought was immortality and un-touchability. His strong credentials didn’t do him justice. He is guilty and he knows it ! Sorry, no pity here either. But may he rest in peace.

  112. triggerman925 triggerman925

juggernaut: Sex video haha. She and Neri sharing the same man?

  113. with all his credentials you’d expect someone smart enough, no, wise enough to admit he was wrong and try to make amends with the people he wronged – around 90 million or so.
if he already stole, lied, its not too far fetched to presume that he also cheated his way through life…

  114. Jug,

Agree! Not only defiant, he was arrogant to the very end.

Intelligent as he was, a superb tactician that he was, he knew (first shooting himself in the heart and not in the head or through the mouth, which would have made his death instantaneous, to keep his face intact) that by committing suicide, he was bound to retrieve a minimum of respect not only from the AFP but from the Filipino media whose psyche make up he knew damn well… that Filipinos are a forgiving lot and would refrain from attacking his person now that he’s dead.

    A fitting epitaph:

“What this is about, this is isn’t about pro sports, this is about greed. This is about money, power and arrogance.”

  115. anna,
and i don’t understand why in heaven’s name would the country give him full military honors and deprived mendoza (the hk hostage taker) the same thing? they both had an impressive medal collections?

  116. vic vic

Mikey statement is so irresponsible..what if the same is to be done to him, will it push him to his grave? well, why not?

  117. Jug,

I was very surprised to read that too… Amazing! That’s perhaps why he didn’t shoot himself in the mouth. He knew the AFP would give him full military honours and wanted his face intact.

Sanamagan! Trust Angie to be the superb tactician to the very end.

  118. vic,
mikey has been demonized, horsized, pigized, probably even made into a doll someone is even now sticking pins into – but he’s still up and about!

  119. ana,
i don’t know…if he was really that smart, with all those millions – he could have just hired someone with the same weight and build, plastic surgeried the bejesus out of him, brought him to the grave site and had one of the bodyguards shoot the poor guy, who made sure that the gun was clean except for his fingerprints, no one would be the wiser.
the family invokes the right of grieving privately, the loser gets buried with military honors to boot.
while the real angel drinks a perfect frozen margarita somewhere and smiling at us poor losers…

  120. 🙂 🙂 🙂

    Jug, poor thing wasn’t perfect.

Was brave of him alright to turn that gun to his chest but not enough courage to do the honourable thing, eg., face his detractors and accusers to the end.

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
    But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
    If you can dream – and not make dreams your master;
    If you can think – and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
‘ Or walk with Kings – nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
    If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And – which is more – you’ll be a Man, my son!

    — Rudyard Kipling

Ah… Angie Reyes, you should’ve memorised this wonderful poem…

Imagine if his former boss dies.

mabibingi tayo sa mga alleluya ni rose!

  132. Reyes’ secretary at DOE, Patricia Daza, is acting spokesperson for the family. She requested the media to give the family a time to mourn. She also told reporters, those who wronged him in the recent events are not welcome to the wake, even bouquets will not be accepted. I think she mentioned some senators, congressmen, indirectly, Rabusa, and the 1-Utak Party List.

So he still carries a heavy heart as it pertains to his removal as party list representative of 1-Utak. Maybe he thought the House seat was to be his cloak of immunity and his removal made him fair game to all predators in the political jungle.

  133. yep. too bad he didn’t plan his “end game” in advance, a contrived death would have been a good idea.

  134. andres,
what is its the other way around, na kailangan alagaan ang mga heneral kung gusto mong magtagal sa poder? baka dalawang taon ka lang tsugi ka na?

  135. One thing na alam ko about the harakiri that the Japanese employs or employed during their war years was that the Japanese official or officer exhaust all means possible and when all things are stacked up against him, then he commits harakiri.

With Angie, he has this chance to vindicate himself or at least defend himself against his accusers, but he chose suicide path. I don’t think this is harakiri in its noblest sense.

Now, the question is, Why??? Think about it….

  136. tomcat tomcat

Man enough to pull the trigger (or did he?) – Not man enough to face the music…???

I heard/read somewhere Reyes was a “southpaw”… and the entry wound is on the left chest exiting on the back left chest close to the armpit. I have little knowledge about guns but I think this angle should not be ruled out.

The recent call from GMA is another angle that should be looked at…

  137. truthseeker truthseeker

If it was not Harakiri, then it was Harakadiri.

Somehow, I believe Reyes has prepared a note he kept to one or some he trusted. Gen. Garcia also told a friend that if something happens to him, he has a prepared letter.

  138. vonjovi2 vonjovi2

  139. truthseeker truthseeker

Grave sin to commit suicide. Gets mo?

  140. To all you rockers out there, here’s one of my favorite songs from Creed, for Reyes and those who wish to follow him:

    “One Last Breath”

Please come now I think I’m falling
I’m holding to all I think is safe
It seems I found the road to nowhere
    And I’m trying to escape
I yelled back when I heard thunder
But I’m down to one last breath
And with it let me say
    Let me say

    Hold me now
I’m six feet from the edge and I’m thinking
    maybe six feet
    Ain’t so far down

I’m looking down now that it’s over
Reflecting on all of my mistakes
I thought I found the road to somewhere
    Somewhere in His grace
I cried out heaven save me
But I’m down to one last breath
And with it let me say
    Let me say

    Hold me now
I’m six feet from the edge and I’m thinking
    maybe six feet
    Ain’t so far down
    (Repeat)

    I like this:

    The Warrior is a Child

But even winners can get wounded in the fight
    People say that I’m amazing
    Strong beyond my years
But they don’t see inside of me
    I’m hiding all the tears”

“They don’t know that I go running home when I fall down
They don’t know who picks me up when no one is around
I drop my sword and cry for just a while
    ‘Cause deep inside this armor
    The warrior is a child”

“Unafraid because His armor is the best
But even soldiers need a quiet place to rest
    People say that I’m amazing
    Never face retreat
But they don’t see the enemies
That lay me at His feet”

“They don’t know that I go running home when I fall down
They don’t know who picks me up when no one is around
I drop my sword and and cry for just a while
    ‘Cause deep inside this armor
    the warrior is a child”

“They don’t know that I go running home when I fall down
They don’t know who picks me up when no one is around
I drop my sword and look up for a smile
    ‘Cause deep inside this armor
    Deep inside this armor
    Deep inside this armor
    The Warrior is a Child”

like a child, he sought his mother to seek comfort…to unload his heart.

  144. truthseeker truthseeker

Ganyan din ang nasa isip ko, Bob. Tulad din siya ni Garcia. The relationship between Rabusa and Reyes is likened to that of Neri and Lozada. That’s why Lozada and Rabusa are very credible witnesses. Hindi sila magigiba.

just wondering..sa burial niya will he be given military honors? will his coffin be draped with the Phil. flag? sa lingo ni putot “he died a hero” her hero..will he be given a 26 gun salute? (27 sana kaya lang ginamit na niya ang first gun salute). para sa akin..he should be given military honors…he served his country..his life was not all in vain…nagkaroon lang siya ng lapse judgment sa huli..burahin na lang natin ang ending ng buhay niya and let us just keep in his memory ang mga kabutihan na ginawa niya…

People usually don’t speak evil of a dead person. But this may be an exception. Angie died a coward without revealing the truth. As for GMA, we all can speak evil of her before she was born, when she was born, while she’s living and when she dies.

Angie attempted very hard to follow his boss’s footstep…avoiding prosecution. He failed to represent the U-tak Party-list. If he was a Congressman, he would still be alive today. Take note of what he mentioned: “Weather-weather lang iyan. Wala na tayo sa gobyerno.” Such statement showed his guilt and vindictive mentality.

  147. BOB BOB

    Rose,
Payag ako sa 27 Gun Salute be given to Reyes sa isang condition…Live bullets at nasa harap at naka aim kila Gloria , Garcia at Ligot…..Para di masayang ang bala…!!!

Why not the late Marcos who’s still in the North? Oo na, corrupt at masamang lider siya. But he was an Army Major.
It’s high time President Noynoy looks at this.

  149. rose rose

At the time he was in the Army..hindi ba joint-military ang relationship ng US at Phil.? puede din siya sa Arlington kaya? o kaya sa Corregidor…total the Japanese who died in Corregidor were given the privilege to be honored thee…thus the Memorial Park? seguro it is time for us to correct the wrongs done..late as it may seem but better late than never, ang sabi nga..oops mali ako..na sa North pa pala..per above..

  150. rose rose

“Bravery is not the absence of fear. But the will to overcome it.”

“Each night I go to Bed.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
    No ain’t looking for forgiveness.
But before Im six foot deep.
Lordf I’ve got to ask a favor.
    An I hope You’ll understand.
Cause I lived life to the fullest.
Let this boy die like a MAN.
    Staring down a bullet.
Let me make my final stand.”

He did not took a stand. But instead, he took a seat, sat down and shot himself.

Everyone has fear of something. It’s how to overcome this fear that counts.

I would like to reiterate that for whatever mistake or wrongdoing Reyes did all throughout his life, he’s better than other corrupt military officers.

  156. tru blue tru blue

157/158: Saw Reyes several years ago belting out some “oldies tune” on tv with some friends, maybe it was a karaoke gathering. A more apt song for Angie was an oldie sang by the Shirelles – “Mama Said, there’ll be days like these”. Well, that day finally came thru.

@gusa77, that is a nice one ‘ABURIDO’ code.

Sorry Ellen and your patriots bloggers.
I believe in this as instituional remedy
to damaged institutions. So I like many
to read and think about it.

Let Corruption also Kill the Philippine Military Academy.

Abolish it and use its gargantuan budget to a start
A new life for the future officers of the Armed Forces.
Divide the PMA budget into three: Trillanes should author a law creating (1) the Philippine Army Academy (PAA); (2) The Philippine Air Force Academy (PAFA), and (3) the largest because the country is an archipelago: The Philippine Sea Forces Academy(PSFA),
( compose of the Philippines Navy, Marines and Coast Coast Guard The strategic Academy locations should be: PAA in Fort Magsaysay; PAFA in the Visayas, and the PSFA Cotabato or Zamboanga City.

The time is opportune and propitious. Funding may be augmented from foreign military assistance. The Armed Forces of the Philippines at the time after all those PMA graduates had retired can start on a clean slate. Let this idea be the start, the foundation and the building blocks for the straight way (patriotism) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines under P NOY.

If this will come to pass, General Reyes’ suicide will be mitigated by history.

    Organization theory is quite explicit.
New organizations are born to become
    institutions because of extremis situations,
often times born out of calamities and
    catastrophy.

Now is the time to have a few small
academies that can be focused and
    effective to fulfill their doctrinal
role to the country. MONEY is of no
    matter here.
