Arroyo pardons Estrada

Convicted president Joseph Estrada is a free man.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo granted pardon to the 70-year-old deposed leader following a recommendation by the Department of Justice (DoJ), Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said in a press conference on national television.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno has been instructed to deliver the order to Estrada at 9 a.m. Friday at his rest house in Tanay, Rizal, said Bunye, concurrent executive secretary.

The process of serving the pardon starts when the former president accepts it and would take about three hours to arrange, Bunye said.

As soon as Estrada accepts the pardon, the order would be transmitted by Puno to the Sandiganbayan and once the anti-graft court has formally noted the order of acceptance, it would be returned to Tanay after which Estrada would be released.

Reading from the order signed by the President, Bunye said the pardon was granted after Estrada publicly agreed not to pursue any other elective office.

It is also part of Arroyo’s policy of releasing prisoners who have reached 70 years of age and in recognition of Estrada’s six years in detention, much of it under house arrest, Bunye said.

With the pardon, “Estrada has been restored his civil and political rights,” Bunye read.

But Bunye said the forfeiture decision imposed by the Sandiganbayan anti-graft court remained in force, “including all writs and processes issued by the Sandiganbayan … except for the bank accounts he owned before his tenure as President.”

The President’s order in full:

“Whereas, this Administration has a policy of releasing inmates who have reached the age of seventy (70),

“Whereas, Joseph Ejercito Estrada has been under detention for six and a half years,

“Whereas, Joseph Ejercito Estrada has publicly committed to no longer seek any elective position or office,

“In view hereof and pursuant to the authority conferred upon me by the Constitution, I hereby grant executive clemency to Joseph Ejercito Estrada, convicted by the Sandiganbayan of plunder and imposed a penalty of reclusion perpetua. He is hereby restored to his civil and political rights.

“The forfeitures imposed by the Sandiganbayan remain in force and in full, including all writs and processes issued by the Sandiganbayan in pursuance hereof, except for the bank account(s) he owned before his tenure as President.”

Bunye made no mention of the political pressure being exerted by Estrada supporters for release following his sentence of life imprisonment earlier this year for massive graft.

Bunye said the President’s decision was based on a Department of Justice recommendation, which contained the same reasons given in the “whereas” clause of the order.

Asked what had prompted Arroyo to act swiftly on the recommendation, Bunye said the President found sufficient reasons to grant Estrada pardon.

“The power of the President under the Constitution is absolute once the conditions for the grant of the pardon are there, the principal condition being that the sentence has already become final then that can set into motion the process of granting executive clemency,” Bunye explained.

In granting the pardon, Bunye assured that the President had considered all factors, including those opposing it.

The pardon came amid allegations by some groups that the move was a “political accommodation” to Estrada.

The chief government prosecutor and lawyers who won the plunder case against Estrada also opposed the move by the Palace, saying “the timing is not good” and “too early.”

But Malacañang officials said granting pardon to Estrada was a reconciliatory move that could finally pave the way to unity.

Estrada, who was sentenced to life in prison by the Sandiganbayan anti-graft court on September 12 for plunder, told the anti-graft court on Monday that he was dropping a motion for reconsideration on his verdict and would seek “full, free, and unconditional” pardon from Arroyo.

The President was reportedly elated when she was told of Estrada’s decision.

The Sandiganbayan Tuesday granted Estrada’s motion to waive his right to appeal his conviction. Dropping the appeal makes the court’s decision final and paves the way for the process of initiating a presidential pardon.

    Really, I believe that this ‘concoction’ of the two dramatistas is good for the country. Their both fading-out from the scene is inevitable. Sabay silang mawawala sa eksena, masaya!

  10. What Erap can do now in fact is turn the table down. If he has not committed a crime, he should not be satisfied with the kind of pardon the criminal has presented him with those conditions to insure that Erap can no longer pose a threat to her ambition to be a queen. Erap should demand a complete dismissal of his case.

    Mayroon flaws pa ang pardon na ito as a matter of fact. Clemency is granted only to those who have been sentenced and have served their punishment. Erap has been only in detention not in prison!!! He is in fact still an accused appealing his case, and is not a totally convicted felon yet so why and what is he being pardoned for? Ang bobo naman!!!

    I don’t believe that Erap nor Gloria will dictate the course of the 2010 elections, both of them are gonners. We already proved that Pinoys can do take the lead in the case of Trillanes. We just have to do it over again!

    Does one has to cry and say out loud “I’m sorry” to show remorse? Sometimes, action speaks louder than words, right? The fact that Erap sought GMA’s pardon was enough. Akala mo ba madali ang humingi ng pardon sa isang bagay na alam mong wala kang kasalanan? If there was or were things Erap was guilty of, it was bribery or extortion but not plunder. Since his case and conviction was more of a political decision than legal, then what’s wrong if Erap finally resolved this politically by seeking pardon from the person who ousted him?

    It is obviously one more ploy of Gloria to throw a monkey wrench at the growing momentum of public opinion against her corrupt administration. Erap’s supporters should not for a second think that Gloria is being merciful and magnanimous. Estrada is being used, make no mistake about it.

    Her diabolical mind knows no bounds.

    Gloria already pardoned Erap, and it’s futile for Erap to say he’s not acknowledging Gloria as his president.

    Meantime, I wish Erap peace of mind beside her ailing mother, and Gloria…go to hell!

    Makikisabat na nga po.

    For Erap to be with his ailing mother in her last moments, there are possible remedies other than asking for executive clemency (and all the implications that go with it.) How many times had Erap been granted furlough?

    For Aling Gloria to cite humanitarian grounds, there are even more remedies other pardon.

    I understand Erap’s wish to be with his mother. What I don’t understand is the need for executive clemency to grant that particular wish.

    It’s now clear to me…this blog is both anti-GMA and anti-Erap. This blog was using Erap against GMA. Now that Erap would be free, this blog cries foul. Not Erap, not GMA…then who? Gamitan lang ang nangyari. The same people who conspired in the ouster of two past leaders now are working for the ouster of the most evil one…GMA. But why use another to oust another? Ginamit niyo lang si Erap dito against GMA. Malinaw sa akin iyan. Can we not move on…yes, move on to oust this GMA and give Erap the break that he badly needs at this time.

    Masalimuot ang ginawang pardon. Una, kinain ni Erap ang kanyang unang sinasabi na never siyang hihingi ng pardon dahil wala siyang kasalanan. Ikalawa, si goria, hanging on to her grabbed presidency, nag-isip ng isang paraan para mabawasan ang mga kumakalaban sa kanya kaya ipinursige itong pardon. We recall that it’s goria’s camp who was insistent on giving pardon to Erap. We could only think that Erap succumbed because of poor health, his dying mother and the personal wish to end his suffering and endless humiliation for being imprisoned for so long. A freedom is a freedom whatever it takes. But from now on, I would not discuss anymore about Erap. Period na siya as far as I’m concerned.

    And to be perfectly honest again, I am one of those prepared for that pardon to be used to rouse the rest of the Filipinos to ousting Gloria too.

    And finally, to be perfectly honest again, I never in my wildest dreams believed that Erap would be a great president.

    Whatever support for him I had represented my enormous disgust at how his impeachment was used by a sinister couple to break the rule of law and breach the Constitution on 21 Jan 2007.

    When Sandigan released a guilty verdict on Erap, mas maingay ang blog na ito because we believed that it was unfair…the biggest crook in the person of Gloria was orchestrating the special court. Naparusahan si Erap, si Gloria ay nambababoy.

    For me, it’s about time na pakawalan natin si Erap sumandali, let him pursue what he wants to do in his remaining years. If politically, he can still guide the nation into a good (another) start, let him show it again. Open ang blog na ito sa kanyang gagawin kung meron man.

    “Almost everybody” here is on the side of seeking for truth and justice, not personalities.

    Who knows, baka nga meron siyang iniisip na iba kesa sa isipan ng ilan. Meantime, his main excuse for asking pardon was his mother, let’s give him enough space to be sad and think.

Instead of calming me down, please help me calm down the others by explaining to them that Erap was compelled to seek pardon because he believes this is the right thing to do. Let’s respect his decision na lang. At this point, ang mas mahalaga sa kanya makapiling ang kanyang ina at pamilya. He deserves rest and peace. Ibigay na lang natin sa kanya iyan alang-alang man lang sa mga ibang kabutihan ginawa niya sa bayan simula pa noong artista siya at mayor ng San Juan. Erap is not that bad.     Dear Editor:

    When lawyer Alan Paguia said Estrada was removed unconstitutionally, he was disbarred by the Supreme Court (SC).

    Now, it seems people have come to their senses — they are coming to the same conclusion or are at least, asking the question.

    The breakdown in social and political disorder of the magnitude we see today started from the day the Constitution was breached by the very people who were supposed to uphold it for the common “tao” — President Estrada is almost incidental.

    What the justices of SC, the Vice President (Gloria at the time), the generals, the legislature and the civil society did — the manipulating and the plotting by a few from these institutions to bring down the presidency, no matter who he was or how he behaved with women, without due process of law — is totally unacceptable. That they should try the President and send him to the gallows if found guilty —without shortcircuiting the Constitution — would have been the right and the only moral thing to do.

    It’s never too late for a nation to rectify a collective moral and legal wrong.

    I am one of the people who admire your great moral courage and have been following your articles faithfully on the toppling or the unseating of the constitutionally, duly democratically-elected President of the Philippines, Joseph Estrada, in your column, The Rule of Law.

    As the impeachment process against President Estrada was being debated upon in Congress, I was one of the citizens of the republic avidly awaiting the democratic process to conclude. Alas, no such process or conclusion came about. Instead, I watched in utter dismay and helplessness, the events leading to the toppling of a legally-elected President without due process or rule of law.

    I was in despair and literally in tears because I felt the injustice not only to President Estrada had been grievously committed but also to the millions who had elected him. I was in despair because I was a living witness to an injustice committed against others like me who, perhaps were not ardent supporters of the Estrada presidency but who sincerely believed that due process of law should have prevailed, that the trial in Congress against Estrada should have come to a legal conclusion.

    It really didn’t matter if it was the Estrada presidency. The people who had wronged him had in reality wronged those who believed the Philippine Constitution should have been respected above and beyond any personal consideration.

    I am not a lawyer and cannot argue the case with a lawyer’s jargon. I am a simple, concerned and terribly hurt citizen of the republic.

    But this is what I am certain: In our country of more than 80 million people, there are millions and millions of those like me, hurt to the core of their being, who seriously despise the members of the so-called civil society led by self-serving, arrogant, pompous media and business clubs in Makati, the religious sectors led by the unholy alliance of Cardinal Sin and former President Aquino, the irresponsible and coward leaders of the Armed Forces of the Philippines-Philippine National Police led by the supreme traitor and mutineer, then AFP chief Angelo Reyes, those members of the legislature led by Joker Arroyo, Teofisto Guingona Jr., Manuel Villar, Robert Barbers, et. al. whose honor as legislators and politicians are as dubious as the values of the Klu Klux Klan.

    And there were Davide and Panganiban along with the most despicable, scheming, power-grabbing couple in the country — Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and consort.

    Gloria Arroyo and Davide lied and cheated; they abused the authority and utilized their positions, vested in them by the republic for their personal selfish ends; they buffooned our political institutions for the sake of political and media glory; they deceived our people to satisfy their exteme lust for power; their misplaced values have exposed our nation to moral depravation; they breached the moral contract which binds the state and its citizens; they further divided an already fragmented society; they oppressed the masses who could not speak their language; they led us and future generations of Filipinos to financial ruin and exposed our poor but honorable country, our brave and hardworking people to international ridicule and shame.

    To me, they possess neither honor nor courage — they committed treason against the nation pure and simple. They have done the republic a great wrong which they will never ever be able to right and inflicted wounds on its people which will take a long time to heal.

    History will judge them as the plotters and the collaborators of evil who have absolutely no moral right to invoke the name of God.

  95. I really admire Nelson Mandela,a great MORAL leader.He stayed in prison for 27 years in Robben Island prison because of his principles.Never asked for pardon from the despotic white apartheid government in South Africa.

    On the island, he and others performed hard labour in a lime quarry. Prison conditions were very basic. Prisoners were segregated by race, with black prisoners receiving the fewest rations.

That has been my point ever-since, concern of the blatant destruction of the 86 constitution, which starts from the day they walked out during the impeachment hearing that Davide intentionally failed to restore the order. He could have prevented it right from the beginning if he ordered them to return to the court or else cite them with contempt.

And also because his chances of acquittal from the Supreme Court headed by justice Puno is 0% chance. Puno as we all know was the ponente in the ruling that said Erap is deemed resigned through “constructive resignation” (based on Sen. Angara’s “diary” that was published in the papers), thus “legitimizing” GMA’s presidency. So why will he allow
    himself to rot in jail because some justices who are beholden to GMA said so. They said Erap is stupid, well, he is not, at least not this time. (one step backward,
    two steps forward???)

    By the way, who is the prosecution’s star witness? And on what basis did the Sandiganbayan special court justices come up with a guilty verdict (despite having shown to all in a televised reenactment that it is impossible for one person (Atong Ang) to deliver P 130M in cold cash to Erap’s house as alledged by the “star witness”)?     For a number of reasons, nothing was heard from me for quite awhile. If there ever was a discussion here on the issue of pardon and I did not join, it should not be taken to mean that I agree with pardon.

    One more issue is that pardon presupposes guilt. When the guilty verdict was discussed here, I recall, I was one among those who aired disbelief. Erap may or may not be guilty, but I am not convinced that he was proven guilty of plunder beyond reasonable doubt.

    I did not like Erap as President, but, since he was elected, he had my humble support- up until all those controversies started haunting him. Then, my wish was for his impeachment and eventual conviction.

    I cannot recall ever having expressed preference for Erap here in this blog. My stand has always been against Aling Gloria’s misdeeds.

    Ginamit si Erap para kalabanin si Aling Gloria? Hindi kaya, ginamit ni Aling Gloria si Erap para hatiin ang sambayanang nakamasid sa bawat galaw niya?

    Pardon has its implications:

    1. It presupposes guilt for plunder. The government, with all its resources, failed to prove that beyond reasonable doubt- remember, we were one in saying that the guilty verdict is unfair? Ngayon, he just accepted what we cannot accept for him.

    2. If Erap is indeed guilty as charged, this pardon granted to him creates a dangerous precedent. Nobody would want to see Aling Gloria pardoned once she gets convicted in the future.

    3. It encourages the culture of impunity we are currently embroiled in.

    BTW, I don’t think that the people who want him out are the same as the people who want him in.

    His being free would probably matter, but I disagree that this is what matters most. I agree with FVR when he said that this issue is beyond Erap and Aling Gloria.

  157. I’m neither pro o anti-Erap, but like Anna and a lot many bloggers here, I have been anti-Arroyo since I can remember, before the fallacious EDSA 2 that I did not support.

    Mag-isa nga lang akong kumakalaban in fact (proofs of my arguments are still in the archives of such egroups as OFW-government, pldt, etc. egroups at yahoo) not that I liked Erap but that he was the duly elected president and as long as he was not squandering any public funds (jueteng money is not public fund but accepting it is bribery), it was OK with me except that I was seeing a semblance of the cronies in his government, but with the projects that my friends have been working out with him, I thought then, why not do what was good for the Filipinos since the guy was leaving after finishing his term.

    As for being a hypocrite, I won’t categorize myself as such because I have only one standard, the standard of truth and right as defined by the tenets and Gospel of Jesus Christ, whose examples I have tried to follow, because I want to go back to where Our Heavenly Father is, because I am a child of God.

    And as such, I know my potentials, etc. and I know what I can do. So far, so good. At least, I am doing something where I am based, and I am grateful for the opportunities that I am getting because the truth is the Japanese are wiser not to allow crooks in the government to suppress freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution and laws that should not have been different from those of the Philippines because they were actually made by Americans!!!

    I did not support Erap during his candidacy to the presidency not because he was no college graduate. A college degree for someone like him who had served as Mayor, Senator, and even Vice President would have been enough credentials for the position of president and the support of the people who would be willing to vote for him. What I did not like about him is his infidelity and fornicatious activities. The Bible had been explicit about not blessing a nation if led by fornicators, etc. I thought the Philippines should have been led by someone more righteous and virtuous.

    But the people are easy to be misled because they are themselves unrighteous. Pati nga iyong walang makain, nambababae. Worse ngayon, pati mga babae, lalakero!!!

    How in the world would the court find Erap innocent? To do so is to admit that what happened in 2001 is treason! The Supreme Court under Davide, AFP under Reyes, GMA, FVR, etc… will be held for doing illegal act… punishable by death, if I am not mistaken…

    I have seen a lot many Japanese in fact who have fought for their right to be heard especially when they know that they are innocent.     I would rather agree with Pechanco’s opinion on this matter, although some you are weighted down by the sheer, glaring unfairness that would attract more painful attention. I also agreed that it show a deep disregard for the rule of law, when there has been no remorse shown by Erap and no time has been served. How’s this going to fit in judicial legacy?Only history will tell. Since, Erap agreed with the pardon, He’s also generally expected to accept responsibility for his criminal conduct, and should be seeking forgiveness rather than vindication. In the game of politics, at least strategy can get you only so far.

    The pardon of Erap is not exactly a chess game, It’s more like a game of chance. Erap’s intends to dismantle the bogus regime of Punggok, is waiting for an opening that may be long in coming. Maybe, just maybe, he can make good use of the clock, trying to consolidate a core opposition movement drawn from across the ideological spectrum and he will face most disadvantages like clouds come with a silver lining. Erap does not seem to have many options as far as a plausible resolution is concerned. His masses followers are weak due to malnutrition and are susceptible to disease. They don’t have strength to march and fight for him, but, only his die-hard affluent. Pechanco is right and I stand by his side.

    it dont believe that erap can make the sandigan reverse its decision since the supreme court already decided on that when they put arroyo in the presidency. how could the sandigan reverse a decision made by the highest court..its like saying that the supreme court judges dont know what they’re doing.

    Back in 2002, Glo promised not to seek reelection. But she reneged on that promise two years later. Two can play the game. Erap promised to support her, puwede rin siyang magbago ng pasiya. All Erap has to do is pay lip service for fifteen days. Pag final na ang order ng Sandiganbayan, well, lintik lang ang walang ganti.

    Many commenters here have said Trillanes would be more effective if not incarcerated. Ganoon din si Erap. so ang paglaya ay mas mabuti para sa paglaban sa Baboy at ang kanyang may-coral este maybahay pala.

    May mga nagsabing nagkukunwari lang si Erap, bibigay din pala. Mahirap magkunwari ng anim na taon; at ang pagkapiit ay hindi pagkukunwari. Tunay siyang walang laya ng anim na taon.

    In his welcome home speech which I watched on TV, Erap thanks Gloria Arroyo & asks the crowd to clap. The crowd claps hesitantly. At one point, in the middle of his speech, he even mentions about unity in the Philippines (I don’t know about those who caught it on TV, but it sounded like a recycled Gloria line). Although I was never a pro-Erap person, I still felt like throwing up listening to his speech.

    This is a man who said that he would not accept Gloria’s pardon; and who said that he did not recognize Gloria as President. He did not take back his words. Erap was actually just acting a role all this time.

    I pity his supporters who actually believed he was a hero.

    I might have felt the same as you had I seen what you described. And I would be even harsher (again apologies to the genuinely pro-Erap people here) as when I agreed with what Manolo Quezon said about Erap.

    He said, “But it also tells us that Estrada is permanently incapable of saving anything beyond his own hide. In the end he had to kneel and beg for mercy from a President he’d never recognized as legitimate…”

    My own take: Very true, perhaps out of plain stupidity or sheer persona dysfunction, i.e., real life taking on a reel role.

    He couldn’t save his presidency then back in 2001 because either he didn’t know how to or because he thought as in the movies, the underdog would always win.

    Anyway, what I would like to say is… Erap asked/ accepted the pardon because he knows fully well that his chances of getting an acquittal is nil. Even if he elevate it (his plunder case) to the SC since Justice Puno is the CJ. Besides, it will take years before a final verdict will be handed down and still no guarantee of freedom. Remeber that he is already 71 yrs old.

    For all his allege “stupidity”, he became wise with his decision of accepting the pardon. He will not allow himself to rot in jail because some justices who are still beholden to GMA said so. I could just imagine him saying to himself…” ano ako bale?? Mabubulok ako sa kulungan dahil sabi ni Gloria? Huwag na oy!!!”

    In the 27 Oct issue of The Daily Tribune, there is an interesting comment made by Senator Gordon in the article, “Senate allies score Gloria on pardon (by Angie M. Rosales). It’s the best comment I have read so far. Here’s an excerpt:

    “..administration senator, Richard Gordon, also expressed disgust at Mrs. Arroyo and hinted that the move was made on account of her political survival.

    “I am revolted by the whole scenario…I’m not asking for punishment (for Estrada) because I don’t like him. I am revolted because the law has been mediocretized or trivialized…in the end, of course, what will happen is that we will become the laughingstock of the world,” he said.

    Gordon noted the matter of timing, as the Palace’ announcement was seen by some observers as a diversionary tactic to divert public attention from the ZTE National Broadband Network project probe in the Senate where Mrs. Arroyo was implicated by Speaker’s son, Jose “Joey” de Venecia III, doesn’t really matter.

    “For me, she committed a wrong, Period. And it will be an even worse wrong because it can be said that the timing was coincidental. But she should not shortchange the people through this pardon as they will be left holding the empty bag,” he said.

    To Mrs. Arroyo, Gordon had this to say: “You took an oath to uphold the law. Sure, pardon is your power. Use your power to benefit the people. You do not use your power to make yourself survive.

    “Estrada was given a big gift by the Filipino people—the trust of the nation. He betrayed that trust which is why he was charged and punished. This case was fought for six years. Is this the way to repay the Filipino people,” Gordon said. “She preferred to survive politically, rather be right, rather than be just.It’s not even a question of mercy. It’s a question of survival for her. It is a transactional leadership as its purest form,” said Gordon.”

    Mike, hindi puwedeng bawiin ni Impakta ang pardon kay Erap. It would have to go through the long legal process again. I like Erap but not necessarily very pro-Erap. If you ask me, I would prefer that he be granted house arrest instead of immediate pardon. Saka na ang pardon kasi medyo sobrang bilis. Puwede naman “house arrest” and he could stay in his San Juan residence. Pero nandiyan na iyan. Let’s just accept and respect the decision.

    Jojovelas, if you have seen and heard Erap’s speech when he arrived in San Juan, he addressed her as President Arroyo and thanked her. In an interview with the media, Loi Estrada also called GMA as President Arroyo and referred to Erap as former President. Malinaw iyan dahil narinig ko. Yes, kung minsan Mrs. Arroyo pa rin ang tawag pero madalas ko nang marinig sa mga Estrada ang President Arroyo.

    Totie, puro ingay lang iyan si FVR. it was during his term that big scale corruption and scams happened such as the Impsa deal. FVR cannot accept the fact that he’s no longer that powerful with GMA.

    Friends, Erap might not be running for public office again but would remain as a political head now perceived to be a bit friendlier to the GMA administration. He would prepare his own family members for the 2010 election and support them. Son Jinggoy may run for Vice-President; JV Ejercito would run for the Senate and maybe nephew Mayor JR Ejercito would run for Governor or Congress. Now that Erap is free, expect politicians to woo him between now and 2010. Marami na naman ang sisipsip sa kanya. By the way, Cory issued a statement lauding the pardon on Erap but we have not heard from Susan Roces yet. Is there something wrong between her, the FPJ camp and the Erap camp?

    I dislike the idea of injecting religion and God in any political undertaking.

    To me, the whole idea of religion mixing it up with politics is scary in the extreme. Politicians who embraces religion in office are really pretty hypocritical in turning a blind eye to some very wonderful wisdom. I think it is fine to have a personal faith or belief, but if an elected president is to represent his religion upon his job, which will obviously include beliefs of every stripe, then definitely it is moronic using religious tenets as a guiding principle unless these principles are also held by everyone who is being represented in the first place. It is illogical for leader who assume office with a big jar of Vaseline in his hand and ask his people to bend over on his belief.For this reason;.I take a negative view of most religions because they seem to cherry pick their way through their holy book to justify an agenda or position while ignoring admonitions that are not profitable.

That’s because the group behind this pardon is no other than the very influential Iglesia Ni Kristo. Of course we all know that INK supported GMA last 2004 election. Ayaw kasi mag-reconcile sina Lacson at FPJ. Manalo gave them an ultimatum that if no one between the two gave way (as vice president), INK would support GMA. At iyan nga ang nangyari. Of course INK also supported GMA as Senator and then Vice President. Well, may magdadada na naman dito kung bakit binibigyan ng ganyang halaga ang Kulto ni Manalo. But what can we do? That’s a fact. Napakalakas ngayon ang INK hindi lang sa Pilipinas kundi sa abroad. Kung baga sa isang business, it has become a very successful business empire. Maganda ang management. Centralized lahat at sumusunod sa mga decision ng boss. They also manage their finance so well. We may have our negative impressions of this religious group; but the fact is talagang malakas ang mga iyan.

    I did not actually liked Erap because of his philandering but he was duly elected by the Filipinos, and though I could NOT understand such mentality, I was prepared to accept their decision. Anyway, I could not be adversely affected by their wrong decision, nor will any of my immediate relatives.

    When he was removed from office, I was virulently against it because it was not in accordance with the rule of law, and with the same crooks running the government like FVR, JdV and worst, the Pidal couple, I thought I felt really nauseated that I resolved to help in the best way I could especially when our taxpayers’ money had the danger of being squandered as well plus the patrimonies that we fought hard to be preserved in danger once more of being sold and disposed of without a national referendum.

    In short, hindi puede ang awa-awa or understanding sa mga kagaguhan ng mga kurakot na ito. Dapat naman ilagay sa lugar ang sinasabing understanding daw sa mga ungas na may gana pang mangloko para lang sa sarili nilang kapakanan!

    Pechanco, I am convinced of your argument on the INK connection re- Erap’s pardon. A previous blogger here had made the same analysis on the crucial role of INK in Philippine politics, past and present. Everyone knows what happened when GMA and JdV withdrew their cha-cha proposal, because the INK also joined hands with the CBCP and threatened the government with a massive protest.

    That singular act from the religious really scared the shit of those guys who wanted to perpetuate themselves in power.

    Now, back to some of the CBCP members’ call for GMA to resign, the bishops will soon meet and probably take this up in as an important agenda. Arch. Lagdameo had already issued a very strong statement on the present immoral regime of Gloria.

    A more crucial action to ask is, what’s the take of INK in the present political crisis sparked by the anomalous NBN deal and bribe-giving in Malacanang?

    (I wish INK head Manalo would show solidarity with the 3 warrior bishops spearheading GMA’s resignation. Once this happens, it’s time for Gloria to pack up and go.)

Then, the military may be induced to follow (there’s now widespread demoralization in the ranks, a spark somewhere will break all hell loose – no Esperon or his ilk can prevent that from happening).

    A good strategy is to “politicize” the religious (if they can’t do it themselves), esp. INK, and make them declare their stand, whether they are FOR or AGAINST a corrupt and dying regime under Gloria. They can’t just idle by and remain as fence sitters.

    Cocoy, religions and churches do play a major role in politics and government. Noon pa iyan unang panahon. In the Philippines as early as the Spanish time, don’t you notice that a Parish Church or Chapel is usually located near the city hall or municipal hall? What does it mean? Hindi sa magkasangga sila sa pagtulong sa mamamayan. Nandiyan sa tabi ang kapilya dahil nakikialam sa pamamalakad ng gobyerno. I’m not an atheist but let me quote from what the atheists say…they say religion is a disease. All throughout history, religion seems to be one of the causes of wars and conflicts. They further say that religion brings the countries backward instead of forward. Kanya-kanyang opinion iyan. It’s very difficult to talk about abstract…the unknown…the mystery. The guilt conscience and scare tactics being applied by most religions and churches sometimes affect one’s psychological well-being. I believe in the Supreme Being. To me, it’s my direct personal relationship with God that matters most.

    Got your point on the separation between the church and state. It’s an ideal in this age of liberalist-secularist world, which easily folds up when we examine realities on the ground. Strictly, even secular America is somehow invoking the “sacred” (one example, the US greenback proudly displays the national motto “In God We Trust.”) Why do George W. Bush and other US presidents before him, even our own Gloria Arroyo, start their meetings with a prayer? Why do officials being inducted to public office don’t miss the phrase “so help me God!”

    You have quickly forgotten that Muslims don’t abide by that separation principle. To them, the “tauhid” (unity) is more binding, where politics and religious life cannot be compartmentalized, just as humanity and the cosmos are one binding whole. That’s why their Ayatollahs, imams, muftis, hadjis or other Islamic high-priests are also, in fact, political leaders, or vice versa.

    Closer to home, why do most of our official programs (including graduation rites) begin with the singing of the national anthem and invocation?

    Isn’t People Power I also a case which debunked the myth of that state-church separation? Wasn’t Cardinal Sin playing politics, when he led the masses to EDSA against Marcos and Erap? Wasn’t he playing politics when he admonished Filipinos to “vote for anyone but Erap?”

    Philippine presidents after Quezon almost always looked up to the Cardinal for blessings (and votes), thereby publicly removing the barrier between the secular and the sacred.

    However, I agree with you that in some areas, the state should not intrude with religious affairs (e.g., giving funds, appointing officials), that there should be religious freedom, etc. So long as these acts do not in any way interfere with the autonomy of either the state or the church.

    But there are areas where they intersect. I always believe in the religious pronouncements that morality and sacred values govern all spheres of human life – public nothwithstanding. When making a stand, the bishops (including the imams and other religious personalities) must condemn corrupt public officials, and must lead in their removal to remain true to their calling.

    Sinabi mo pa. I thought natuto na sa experience niya ngayon ikinakatwiran pang kasi palpak ang hustisya ang Pilipinas. E di ayusin kung palpak, and I don’t suppose it is being unfair for him to wait a little bit longer until justice and the rule of law is restored.

    Btw, according to constitutionalist Joaquin Bernas, the pardon has a clause that says Erap cannot run anymore for public office and that the president can revoke or nullify a pardon when he/she feels that the condition of the pardon is violated. That he/ she alone has that “privilege power” to do so.

    Okey, what I think about Arroyo pardoning Estrada?
    I believe this is a positive development for our country. I see the reason behid the decision of GMA was the same as the reason of South Korean President Kim Young-sam when he pardoned former leaders Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo. And that is to avoid division and allow national healing for the benefit of our nation, politically and economically. Judging from the status of where South Korea stands now, I think this is not a bad idea and this might also work for us.

I’m not an expert on anything but I think Erap and Mandela’s situation and cases were different. Iba yata ang ipinaglalaban ni Mandela sa South Africa sa kaso ni Erap. Okay…if Erap was not pardoned, then he goes straight to Muntinlupa prison. He has to wait for years…as long as 10 more years appealing with Supreme Court. In the meantime, either GMA has completed her stolen term and is able to continue to remain in power by amending the constitution. Erap’s mother has died. The administration crooks continue with their money-making activities. Singson and FVR continue to enjoy their privileges and abuse. I understand that Yuko feels so let down by Erap’s begging for and eventually accepting pardon from this bogus president because she was one of those who worked hard, eg., copying, distributing Erap’s biographic film, blogging about him and the conditions in which a duly elected president’s rights were violated at the highest levels as well as blogging for his rights to be restituted, etc. She’s done these things in this blog and in cyberspace, because of her convictions.

    I think the nation will better off without those two, Gloria & Erap and without their ugly melodramas that sully the political landscape.

    If he begged, maraming conditions ang nasa agreement. I would think it was GMA who begged Erap to seek for pardon for her political survival. Tandaan niyo na si Sec. Puno ang errand boy ni GMA. It was Puno who kept going to Tanay to see Erap. If Mike Defensor was still with the cabinet, siguro siya ang errand boy because he’s been working on Erap’s house arrest from the very beginning. Let me go back to my previous question: What if Erap is not pardoned? What would happen? What would you do?

    What do former US president Gerald Ford, former South Korean president Kim Dae Jung, and Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo have in common?

    They all granted pardon to former presidents of their countries.

    Gerald Ford, who assumed the presidency after his predecessor Richard Nixon resigned amid the Watergate scandal, pardoned Nixon on August 9, 1974. Ford suffered a huge decline in his approval rating after his decision. According to US pollster Gallup, Ford’s initial approval rating of 71 percent dropped to 50 percent after issuing the pardon.

    In 1987, South Korea’s Kim Dae Jung pardoned two military dictators and former presidents Roh Tae Woo and Chun Doo Hwan after the latter spent two years in prison. Roh and Chun were found guilty for their roles in a coup in 1979 and a violent crackdown of protesters in 1980, and for accepting bribes from businessmen.

    Other leaders who had granted pardons to former high-ranking officials and opposition leaders found guilty of committing crimes include:

    * Rwandan president Paul Kagame, who in April 2007 granted a pardon to his predecessor Pasteur Bizimingu. Bizimingu was found guilty of embezzlement, forming a militia, and inciting violence and was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.
    * King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia, who in 2006 granted the request of Prime Minister Hun Sen to pardon opposition leaders Sam Rainsy and Cheam Channy. Rainsy, who was on self-exile in France when the pardon was granted, was found guilty of defaming the prime minister and National Assembly President Prince Norodom Ranariddh.     * Kazakhstan’s president Nursultan Nazarbayev, who in 2003 granted a pardon to jailed opposition leader Mukhtar Ablyazov. Ablyazov, a founding member of the Democratic Choice of Kazakhstan movement and a former energy minister, was serving a six-year prison sentence for corruption.
    * Former Argentina president Carlos Menem, who in 1990 granted a pardon to jailed former military president Leopoldo Galtieri. Galtieri was a general who served as Argentina’s president from December 1981 to June 1982. His forces annexed the British Falkland Islands in April 1982, resulting in a two-month war with Britain. He was found guilty of mishandling the Falklands War and was serving time in prison when pardoned. However, he was re-arrested and tried for human rights abuses in 1990. Galtieri died while on house arrest.

    So what’s wrong if Erap got pardoned?

    Lacson for President? in fairness to Sen. Lacson, he has always been vigilant, annoying at most times but its not enough to think that he is capable of leading our country. Not to mention that he has not proven any of his allegations up until now. And by the way, why is it that we require the next leader to be a real opposition figure? Is that what our country needs? its self-gratifying knowing that we only want them elected because they are the most anti-gloria, and the most likely to carry out revenge. Our next leader should be competent, honest, capable, and have a vision to move our country forward, a person that can carry out decision how unpopular it maybe, and not another media-blitz-dependent opposition.

    Ping for president? Sorry, di ako bilib! May vested interest din. Sakripisyo para sa bayan? He cannot even sacrifice his candidacy last election 2004 para isa lang ang oppositon candidate. Kung hindi sa kanyang ambisyong pansarili, di naging success ang pandaraya ni Gloria. For me, he is not a good team player. And besides tama si Duren, wala pa siyang napapatunayan. Maingay lang si Ping na oposisyon!

  375. Naku Luz, they all have vested interests kung sa vested interest lang. Almost acceptable if only they could learn to classify their vested interests accordingly, eg., good governance, i.e., be even handed where population is concerend because in so doing, the politician should think that he could keep his vested interest if he doesn’t forget that his very existence depends on the good will of the people, also, put a ceiling to corruption say, 5% at most so at least hindi garapalan, etc.

    That’s how politicians with vested interests operate in other countries particularly in Malaysia.

    Hindi naman kasi puwedeng erradicate completely ang corruption so short of something utopic, ito na lang…

Why they did it to my penchanco handle, I have no clue. Iyong message na nai-post ko sa unang thread using pechanco tinanggal. Now, if they still want to take out this other handle “maaarte”, then there’s nothing I could do.

    Give Erap two to three weeks. Babanat na naman iyan kay GMA. So what did GMA get? Natauban lang niya panandali ang
    issues ng bribery at ZTE. Pero babalik din iyan pagkatapos ng Undas. This is the witching hour. Beyond next week, when the ghosts keep GMA beloved company, matatauhan na naman ang sambayanan.

    Luz’s observation about Ping is correct. Kung minsan hindi ko rin maintindihan ang mga salita at kilos ni Ping. Maybe his military background and position with the intelligence groups in the past make his actions unpredictable and suspicious. Pero okay siya…palaban kasi. Sa lahat ng mga senador, siya lang ang nakikita kong consistent at tunay na opposition (of course including Nene Pimentel). If we have no one to pick outside of the Senate, and if we should pick someone within the Senate, I think Ping is the best at this time.

  388. “Forget about the Erap’s pardon. Move on,” they say. But what they are forgetting is that the law has been ignored again. Rule of law is nada to this government.

    Gloria Kulimbat may have not declared officially Martial Law, but what she has been doing is worse than what Marcos, the lawyer, did during his reign. At least, Marcos tried to make a semblance of some law by drafting first the law that will make his action legal as when he established the Batasan for instance.

    The criminal has not done that. What she does is bribe anyone who can come to her rescue, beck and call. And presto, she is safe even when her action has no legal basis, for pardon for instance are granted on recommendation of some pardoning committee as in the case of Japan, where BTW pardons are granted by the Emperor, not the Prime Minister.

    What is abhorrent about this Erap pardon in fact is that the creep did this to cover up another scandal.

    Funny how the Erap fans would say “Erap should be forgiven!” Question is what is he going to be forgiven for?

    I have actually posted this in another blog. I thought I’d post it here as well as a kind of adieu.

    I’ll leave you guys with the bickerings. There are a lot of things to do. You bet, I have already seen a lot of miracles that I know for sure what my little efforts can do. I don’t even have to mention them but results indeed we have seen, and reason I guess why a lot many groups of Filipinos in and out of the Philippines seek me and my group for help!!!
