Fighting over loot

You think all is well with Gloria Arroyo and her cronies? Listen to this:

A few weeks ago, a well-known businesswoman and Arroyo supporter went to Malacañang to complain about Mike Arroyo and brother Iggy muscling into her application for microfinancing with one of the government banks.

This lady, whose business interests span the world, naively nurtures the idea that Mike Arroyo is a liability to the upright and hardworking GMA. Our Malacañang source said the businesswoman was stunned when Arroyo dismissed her complaint with “That’s what the destabilizers say.”

Later, when Malacañang invited the businesswoman to join the presidential party to Sorsogon, from where the latter hails, she declined saying that she had to be in New York because her daughter was appearing in a play.

Aghast about how fluid the classification of people in Malacañang, an observer wryly remarked, “From crony to destabilizer.” Poor girl. She should have learned from former Fidel Ramos who started as savior, then to destabilizer, and now to “saling pusa.”

The incident gives a preview of the fight over the spoils of war if Malacañang would succeed in changing the Constitution illegally and Arroyo becomes president and prime minister for life. There’s no way that Arroyo would relinquish power even after 2010. With the many crimes she has committed, she will go straight to jail the moment she is out of Malacañang.

What happens now to Jose de Venecia’s dream of becoming prime minister? Prospero Pichay will be more than glad to shake him down the moment he attempts to undercut Arroyo. But would Luis Villafuerte allow Pichay to take the premier seat?

I can’t wait for that. As a wise old man said, when thieves quarrel, the farmer gets back his cow.

Talk about naivete … when Axxa Ramirez, thinking naively that she was doing the right thing, blew the whistle on money laundering, Gloria unleashed the dogs of the NBI after her. Wonder how poor Axxa is doing nowadays.

Well, I guess, bad karma is really working now to those who supported the 2001 coup that installed gloria to where she is now. I pity them. See? they have done crimes to the Filipino people, let them reap the fruits. Buti nga sa kanila. Masakit nga lang, kasi kahit iyong ibang taong hindi sang-ayon sa nangyari noong 2001 ay nadadamay. But then, that is part of the process.

Both de venecia and pichay are ambitious in getting the premiership. Ang tanong e, ibibigay ba ni leprechaun sa kanila. sagot “hindi” kasi nga galit sya sa kapwa magnanakaw nya.

    Ellen,

Begging your indulgence… am posting an e-mail from BABAE re the murder of Inday Estorba.

Statement and Urgent Call to Action April 4, 2006
Contact: Marisa Mariano, Secretary General, babae San Francisco,
    Email: info@babaesf.org, 415-412-8915, http://www.babaesf.org

JUSTICE FOR OUR SISTER INDAY ESTORBA!!!

babae condemns the murder of Gabriela party member, Inday Estorba. On April 3, 2006 at 3:00 am in her home, Inday Estorba was shot in close range and died shortly after. She leaves behind 2 children and a husband in critical condition. Estorba’s active history in GABRIELA women’s organizing and women’s rights advocacy in Bohol made her a clear target for Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s minions. Essentially, however, Estorba was murdered under the watchful eyes of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. “Inday Estorba, for being an active Gabriela member and an advocate of women’s rights, has been identified as a target of Arroyo’s military,” said Lisa Maza, a similarly politically persecuted Gabriela partylist member.

Last week alongside our comrades, we celebrated the life of Cris Hugo, slain LFS national member and contributor to the youth and students movement in the Philippines. And within a short week, we are again in utter disbelief and now, in absolute rage with the unjust murder of Inday Estorba.

Ellen, here’s what MLQ3 wrote in his blog on Apr 3, 2006, pretty much confirming the story:

    http://www.quezon.ph/blog/?p=884

This reminds me of a story, which a fellow journalist told a friend, who then told me, which I then confirmed with someone close to the person in the story. Recently, a prominent Fil-Am supporter of the President wanted to engage in a business opportunity here in the Philippines. The opportunity fell by the wayside because the President’s husband took advantage of the opportunity first. The Fil-Am concerned, upset over the First Gentleman’s alleged intervention, went directly to the President to complain to her that it was behavior like her husband’s that was reflecting badly on the administration. The President icily replied, “those criticizing my husband are destabilizers,” or words to that effect. The Fil-Am was shocked, and infuriated, and instead of accompanying the President on a provincial sortie, went back to the USA. A relative of the Fil-Am confirmed that something along the lines of the story did happen, but not in such a sensational manner.

    Ellen, John,

Reminds me so much of one of my friend’s experience with Gloria and Mike early on in Gloria’s illegal occupation of the Palace – Bing Rodrigo (who’s passed away since).

  11. Mike Mike

ang birthday wish ko kay unano….sana tuloy tuloy na……tuloy tuloy na magaway away silang mga sinungaling, mandaraya at mga magananakaw…..wish ko yan from the bottom of my heart.

  12. johnmarzan johnmarzan

you’re friends with bing rodrigo, anna? wow.

btw anna, sino kaya ang tinutukoy na crony ni ellen na naging “destabilizer” sa tingin ni ate glo? si loida nicolas lewis kaya.

(don’t answer ellen… let me and anna and others guess this one.)

  13. anna de brux anna de brux

    Hi John,

Yes, Bing was a dear friend. I saw her a few months before she was diagnosed with cancer and she died 3 or 4 months after her illness was discovered but sadly, I couldn’t be in Manila for her burial.

    On the crony in question:

Like you, I can only make a guess as to the identity of the “crony” in question. It might not be Loida because I can’t believe that Gloria would have the guts to tell Loida Lewis to her face “That’s what stabilizers say.” Too big a fish for Gloria to pit her tiny fish hook on. But maybe I’m wrong but I’m kinda sceptical because first of all, Loida has a sense of delicadeza not to return to the Palace after her own sister had “maligned” Gloria.

Secondly, Loida’s daughters are both adults already. Basing on the “crony’s” reason for going back to NY – “daughter joining a play in NY” which could mean a school play, then Loida’s daughters are out of the picture and so, it would mean that it isn’t Loida who was being referred to as the “crony”.

But let’s advance further: Leslie, the oldest daughter of Loida is a budding director/actress and involved in the performing arts so, maybe she’s in a show in NY so it’s plausible it’s indeed Loida who’s referred to as the “crony”. Also, Cristina, Loida’s younger daughter is a pianist so perhaps she might be the one referred to as the “daughter joining a show”. If so, then the slighted crony could indeed be Loida Lewis but frankly, I would be surprised if it’s Loida. However, one never knows if she’s decided to swallow her pride and speak to Gloria.

On the other hand, if indeed one of the Nicolas sisters was involved, the “crony” in question might be Mely Nicolas. However, I don’t know if Mely would still have the “guts” to talk to Gloria in person even over a business opportunity after she resigned ceremoniously along with Dinky Soliman (Hyatt 10).

I can only make extrapolations, John and make a rough guess. I haven’t spoken to Loida Lewis for quite sometime.

  14. Anna, John,

Since you are in the identification game, look back into my March 27 “Ostracism as protest” entry. There’s an item there that’s related to the discussion.

  15. anna de brux anna de brux

    Hi Ellen,

I missed reading that column then. Yes, I got the same news from friends of mine who were there at the wake. One of our very, very close friends (Bing’s and mine) sent me a running account by e-mail, practically daily, of how things went a couple of months before Bing passed away. This mutual friend would spend time, days and nights, rotating with other girl friends in the group to look after Bing and updated me with news.

I was so galit na galit when I heard that Gloria went to the wake that this girl friend of mine said “Good you weren’t here.” (meaning she knows I might have been tempted to say a nasty word or something in the presence of Gloria.)

As I have told you in the past, most of my girl friends supported Gloria against Erap at the impeachment and went on to Edsa 2. Prior to that, they would go to Congress during the impeachment trial to heckle Miriam. I had always believed that the shortcircuiting of the Constitution was the most atrocious crime that the civil society could commit against the nation and told them so. I was sadly the only one in our group who thought that way.

While I didn’t agree with my friends and felt that they were being stupid at that time, I kept my friendship with many of them and even went to Manila a few months after Gloria stole the presidency in 2001 to celebrate Bing’s birthday.
