Join online demo against internet censorship

Reporters without Borders urges internet users to join in 24-hour online demo against internet censorship

Where: www.rsf.org

When: 11 A.M. on 7 November to 11 A.M. on 8 November

No one should ever be prevented from posting news online or writing a blog, but they are in the 13 countries singled out by Reporters Without Borders for a 24-hour online protest against Internet censorship.

Worldwide, 61 people are currently in prison for posting “subversive” content on a blog or website. Reporters Without Borders is compiling a list of 13 countries whose governments are “Internet enemies” because they censor and block online content that criticises them. The Internet scares. Censors of every kind exploit its flaws and attack those who pin their hopes on it. Multinationals such as Yahoo! cooperate with the Chinese government in filtering the Internet and tracking down cyber-dissidents.

The defence of online free expression and the fate of bloggers in repressive countries concern everyone. So Reporters Without Borders is offering Internet users tools to campaign against Internet predators and is calling on them to participate in an INTERNATIONAL CYBER-DEMO.

Everyone is invited to support this struggle by connecting to the Reporters Without Borders website (www.rsf.org) between 11 a.m. (Paris time) on Tuesday, 7 November, and 11 a.m. on Wednesday, 8 November. Each click will help to change the “Internet Black Holes” map and help to combat censorship. As many people as possible must participate so that this operation can be a success and have an impact on those governments that try to seal off what is meant to be a space where people can express themselves freely.

Protests will also be staged by Reporters Without Borders bureaux around the world to condemn Internet censorship and ethical misconduct of the Internet giants when operating in one of these countries.

Reporters Without Borders will publish the list of the 13 Internet enemies on 7 November and at the same time will launch its blog platform, rsfblog, and an Arabic-language version of its press freedom website.

The agency Saatchi & Saatchi has created an Internet ad calling on the entire Internet community to take part in the 24-hour campaign. All media, websites and blogs that want to support this large-scale protest are invited to get in touch with Cédric Gervet at +33 1 4483-8474.

Freedom of expression is not a luxury. It is everyone’s right!

  2. This is an issue being hotly discussed and monitored over here in Japan, too.

I’ve heard of this Chinese initiative a year or two ago from my husband, and some tieing up with countries in Asia, but strongly opposed by internetters in Japan.

We have been hearing a lot of moaning against this Chinese initiative as a matter of fact that I bet you is being discussed by Bansot with her Chinese hosts now kin based on her claim that her husband is a direct descendant of some unknown Chinese being made to look like somebody even when as a historian, I actually have never heard of any Chinese being that “malakas” with the Spanish governors in the Philippines when the Philippines was under Spain, nor was there a Chinese controlling the Galleon trade between the Philippines and the new world (Mexico).

Trying hard pa to justify the sudden increase of their assets and wealth!!!

To hell with this censorship, considering a lot of piratings were invented by these Chinese, and reason for all the many restrictions and limitations to prevent them from continuing with their pirating!!!

The Chinese should limit their control within their borders as a matter of fact, and leave other more responsible internetters in other countries to freely explore cyberspace.

At least, over here we enjoy more freedom on the premise that with freedom comes responsibility! Majority of Internetters here in fact are now using fribros optics! ADSL is in fact now a thing of the past.

  3. Anna, what’s the time difference between Paris and Manila?

  4. MLQ3:

I am not a voter because Japan does not honor dual citizenship, but I am an advocator for the OAV, and voting for Filipinos overseas, but a big NO to internet voting. Lalong madadaya iyan!!! Voting by mail nga dito nadaya din, iyong pang sa Internet with the Bansot and her cohorts maintaining a communications center in Cebu, etc. Believe you me! Dito difference of votes versus the Bansot’s, the figure was a combination of the votes taken from Roco and FPJ. Kaya halatang-halata may daya. We were told of ballots sent from Comelec—kunyari daw nagkamali ang post office sa Japan na na-deviate papuntang Comelec when the truth is that there was no address of the Comelec in the return envelope for ballots sent by voters in Japan to the Philippine Embassy and Consulate.

NO TO INTERNET VOTING. BIGYAN NG TRABAHO ANG MGA TAMAD SA COMELEC-TA LANG YATA ANG GUSTO!!!
    NO TO INTERNET

  5. Hello, Ellen…

Gosh, I’ve been desperately trying to log onto your blog since 13h00 my time but to no avail. Couldn’t access Quezon’s blog either – only Philippine Commentary’s.

    But finally got in.

Time difference I think is 7 hours (we’re into daylight saving time since last week.)

    It’s already 16h43 here (04:43 PM.)

I rang RSF and got the voice box – all saints day here too so they must be on holiday but tomorrow, technically isn’t a public holiday – I reckon half of Europe is out prancing around while the weather is still unbelievably good, hehehe! Will try to call them again tomorrow.

  6. (Just sharing with you a post in another blog:)

    Re: Abbu Sayyaf

Some 5 years ago, the Philippine government announced very officially to a waiting world that there were no more than 100 or so Abu Sayyaf bandits in the Philippines.

After 5 years of determined and savage, shoot to kill manhunt effected by our WONDERFUL Armed Forces of the Philippines with the assistance of our equally WONDERFUL troopers from the US, use of lots of money, high-tech gadgets (sattelite com courtesy of our GENEROUS friends from the US), and the promise by the nation’s so LOVEABLE commander in chief who once uttered “isang bala lang kayo”, you can’t be serious – the Abu Sayyaff must have been decimated all 100 of them. I shudder to think that the government of the Philippines didn’t say the truth.

Think of how badly the United States Armed Forces would fare, they who have participated in the manhunt since the capture of Commander Robot by our superb Navy Seals (SWAG) if we announce to the world that those 100 Abu Sayyaff have not been totally obliterated. Don’t let the lovely Gloria press fool you that our American friends didn’t go hunting those Abu Sayyaf – they did and my friends in the Philippine military said so themselves (and I’ve got taped recorded conversations to prove that!)

Anyhow, even with only 2 Abu Sayyaff terrorists killed a month since 2001, why, I reckon there shouldn’t be any of these poor terrorists left in Pinas anymore… Wouldn’t you say so?

With that in mind, I reckon that we can safely cross out the Abu Sayyaf from your list of terrorists…unless of course, all the prancing in media by our beloved dear leader Gloria is all bullshit.

Yeah! “Freedom of expression is not a luxury. It is everyone’s right!” and a RESPONSIBILITY, too.

Now, if she said that the Abus were wiped out, and they did not die, siguro iba ang pinatay nila! Susmalosep!

  9. You bet, Chi, it has been guaranteed by the Constitution whether in the Philippines or Japan or the USA. And with freedom comes responsibility.

“Freedom of expression is not a luxury. It is everyone’s right!” IT SURE IS!

    Anna de Brux,
A VERY interesting post. As long as a Gloria remains in power, it will be lie after lie after lie…we possibly can’t expect anything less, could we? TRUTH is not in the woman’s vocabulary. TRUTH are only for those with dignity, integrity and honor. Gloria is too short for that!

  20. npongco npongco

Mrivera, we don’t need to waste our time responding and communicating with that corny nut. He belongs to Dolphy or Joey de Leon’s group.

  21. Mrivera Mrivera
