Duterte eyes Gilbert Teodoro for foreign affairs

Former Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro

Former Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro is being eyed by President-elect Rodrigo Duterte to be his foreign secretary, not as defense secretary,as some new reports say, a source close to Duterte said.

In an interview before the May 9 election, the source said Teodoro has not yet responded to the invitation to join the Duterte cabinet.

Teodoro ran for president in 2010 but lost to his cousin, Benigno Aquino III.

The job of foreign secretary would be doubly challenging in a Duterte presidency considering the incoming head of state’s irreverent nature, lack of patience for formalities and protocol and penchant for profanity.

The most important foreign relations issue for the incoming administration is China. The decision of the Arbitral Tribunal of the United Nations Commission on the Law of the Sea on the case filed by the Philippines to declare illegal China’s all encompassing nine-dash-line map is expected to be handed down in the next few weeks.

Gibo will decline nomination for CJ

While almost every lawyer in town and a nurse want to be included in the list of candidates for the position of Supreme Court Justice, vacated by the recently convicted Renato Corona, it’s good to see two people declining.

Former Energy Secretary Raphael “Popo” Lotilla wrote a letter the other day thanking friends who submitted his name to the Judicial and Bar Council, that will screen the nominations and submit to the Malacañang a short list (usually three names) from where the President will choose the next SC justice.

He was nominated by former economic managers and economists Roberto de Ocampo, Calixto Chikiamko, Gloria Tan Climaco, Bong Montes, Simon Paterno and Romeo Bernardo.

Yesterday, former Defense Secretary Gilbert “Gibo”Teodoro was nominated by Atty. Jose Mallari.

Was the music used in Gibo’s jingle stolen? Dennis Garcia says “No”

Checked my email upon arriving from LA and found a note from Dennis Garcia, whom I admire for his wit and creativity, about a controversy on the jingle used in a Gilbert Teodoro ad.

Had to make a quick google search on the issue and this is what I got from GMA News on line:

Rico Blanco, formerly of the rock band Rivermaya, has demanded that administration presidential bet Gilberto Teodoro, Jr. stop using his song “Posible” in the politician’s video ad.

The campaign jingle changed the lyrics to “Sulong Gibo (Go, Gibo!)” from the original “Sulong, laban (Go, fight!)” in the song’s refrain.

In a statement released to the media on Saturday, Blanco, through Warner Music Philippines Artist Management, said the use of his song “Posible” in Teodoro’s latest campaign advertisement did not have his consent. Garcia refutes this and sent a copy of his agreement with Liza Nakpil, registered publisher of the song.

Gibo promises to continue Arroyo’s “success”

Saying that the administration of Gloria Arroyo has “undeniably been successful” in fighting poverty, Lakas-Kampi-CMD presidential candidate Gilbert Teodoro, former defense secretary, vowed to continue the programs of Arroyo if he is elected president.

He assured the people that he will address the four faces of poverty: poverty of the mind, poverty of the pocket, poverty of the environment, and poverty of relationships.

Teodoro and actor Edu Manzano, former chairman of the Optical Media Board, were proclaimed as Lakas-Kampi-CMD presidential and vice-presidential candidates, respectively, in the administration party’s national convention this morning held at the Philippine International Convention Center.

Mabuting kumbinasyun itong Teodoro-Revilla.

The discussions in the previous post on this question of how the next president would handle Gloria Arroyo have been vibrant. However, I noticed that some quoted just a part of the answers which could be misleading.

For my column for Abante I got all the answers of the four presidential aspirants: Senators Manny Villar, Benigno Aquino III, Francis Escudero and Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro.

Although Che-Che Lazaro didn’t ask exactly the same questions to all the interviewees, more or less, you have an idea of their stand or lack of stand.

There are a number of security challenges and obviously concerns on conflicting claims in the South China Sea, the United States takes no position on those claims, we only urge all of the parties involved to try and resolve these issues clearly, peacefully.”
