Envious of Thais

There was a part of the account of the first hours of the coup in Thailand in the wee hours of Sept. 20 that reminded me of the 1986 coup staged by then Defense Secretary Juan Ponce-Enrile and then AFP vice-chief of staff Fidel Ramos.

Reuters account of the coup staged by Thai Army chief Gen. Sonthi Boonyaratglin against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said, “Thaksin, who was in New York at the UN General Assembly, apparently tried to head off the putsch by phoning a Thai television station to announce a state of emergency but was cut off after 10 minutes.”

Thaksin was never put on the air.

At the height of the 1986 Philippine coup, which we call People Power One, Marcos appeared on the government TV station, Channel 4, saying he was still in control. All of a sudden he was cut off and the audience could hear conversations from the studio.

I still remember Marcos aghast look which turned into dismay. It was then that Marcos realized that the government TV station was in the hands of the rebel forces. It was known later that the voices were that a group of broadcasters led by June Keithley who had already taken positions inside Channel 4.

Malacañang then had the video tape of Marcos message brought to Channel 9, owned by Marcos crony Roberto Benedicto for airing. But when the courier got to Channel 9 in Quezon City, it was also already in the hands of the rebel forces. The courier decided not to deliver the video taped message.

To this day, it’s not known what happened to that video tape.

Two days after that incident, Marcos was flown to Hawaii where he spent the rest of life.

Latest reports describe Thaksin as “ousted leader”. He is now in London and he appeared to accept his fate.

He was quoted as saying, “I was prime minister when I came, and I was jobless on the way back.”

He also said, “I volunteered to work for the country, but if they don’t want me to do that, I won’t.”
thaithankssoldier.jpg
We can only envy the Thais. There’s a text going around on the difference between Filipino and Thai generals: “Sa Thailand, mga generals may bayag. Sa Pilipinas, mga generals, malaking bayad.” (In Thailand, generals have balls. In the Philippines, generals get big pay.)
The same theme runs through in the comments I get from Filipinos all over the world in my blog:

Diego Guerrero says: “The 1986 EDSA Uprising and EDSA Dos can be considered as a successful coup d’état in the Philippines. Under the corrupt Gloria Arroyo regime, the crooks in the military and police force are well-fed. A well-fed pet dog never bites their master unless beaten or abused.

“ I believe that majority of the Filipino people will support extra-constitutional means to end corrupt Arroyo regime. Who will lead the revolt? Junior and middle level officers are disgruntled with graft and corruption within the military.

“ These idealist officers may lead the ouster of illegitimate President Gloria Arroyo. Thaksin’s alleged corruption is nothing compared to Arroyo’s kleptocracy and abuse of power. “

Phil Cruz says: “The AFP won’t launch a coup against Gloria. That’s because Gloria is feeding them well. (AFP Chief Hermogenes) Esperon can’t get the good men under him to follow him.

“But Esperon shouldn’t sleep too soundly. The coup could be launched directly against him. That would render (Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita inutile as the military link of Gloria. And it’s automatic. Gloria falls.”

“ Now, the Thai people with the help of the military was able to effect a change of leadership without violence. And the change has been endorsed by the monarchy. Kailan pa Pilipinas?”

Elvira Sahara says, “ Headlines of Philippine newspapers: ‘Coup won’t happen in the Philippines’

“My prayer: Please naman, Lord, make it happen in the Philippines too. And soon.”

Taipan 88 joins the prayer, “Please Lord, sana naman, Now na.”

I just thanked NCO and Hermann Tiu Laurel in Tribune for an excellent observation and I am 10,000 kilometers away. It is not even 10pm Thursday pa.

It is not about kudeta, it is about who dunnit and who gains. In Marcos, Erap, and Thaksin cases the oligarchs benefitted. In 1986, they connived with the Church of Sin and especially with the CIA. You think a Westpointer and CIA guy like Ramos would have done it? Oh NO! He knew. And he knew that Radio Veritas and June Keithley were and and are CIA and behind him. And they were alone on the air. Remember that.

Only the people, they never know. They are always used. Ask a Thai and he loves Thaksin. But he has to watch as those who are close to the oligarchs and paid by the oligarchs dance on the streets.

Did you see the girls who were dancing on Ayala singing “Erap resign!”??? Who you think paid them? Ask Binay, by now he must know. You just have to put it on TV (and they are so good at it). What will the poor people think? They have seen it with their own eyes. (seen what?)

I liked the bayag and the bayad, though. Hope that many Filipinos will get the message. I certainly do, even far away.

A military Coup maybe good for Thailand, beause as we see now, their Military is Independent of control or influence by either the Administration or by the Opposition, instead it is loyal to the head of state, which in Thailand’s Constitutional Monarchy resides in the King. Also it’s military acted as one solid unit, thereby avoiding conflicts within itself. It’s no wonder that it can sussesfully mount a successful coup without firing a single shot. If this thing is possible in Philippines scenerio, I’m pretty sure, it had happened long time ago, right after the revelation of Election Frauds, but the Military itself is now political player in the Philippines settings. It Lost its innocence since the Era of Martial Law and has not regained it yet. There is no comparison..

“Envious of the Thais…”, mahirap man aminin pero iyan ang totoo, as far as my personal feelings. Kaya lang although we pinoys and the thais are both closely link as a race by geographical locations, pero pagdating sa KULTURA at TRADISYON ay parang “continents apart” tayo. Kakainggit? Sobra pa sa nakakainggit. 😉

We will succeed…..a coup should be staged by the people with military back-up!! Middle and junior officers can do it.

Maganda iyong picture( a poster with photos of gloria and thaksin) sa Tribune today with caption “Thaksin-ousted, Taksil-soon!

heard this on AM radio while riding a taxi …

the military coup in Thailand may be difficult to replicate in the Philippines because ….
the AFP is loyal to GMA …..
and GMA is loyal to the AFP.

i find it ironic though that we are celebrating the success of a military coup i.e. martial rule in Thailand on the very anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law 34 years ago in the Philippines.

  6. luzviminda luzviminda

I agree with goldenlion that the middle and junior officers of our AFP can launch an overthrow of Gloria and her corrupt high-ranking generals. They only have to plan it very well para di ma-counter. Trillanes & Co almost succeeded. General Danny Lim almost succeeded. Now if they just coordinate their plans, (like withdrawal of support but with artilleries) it is just a matter of time that it will finally succeed. We are always here to back them up. But this time kailangan handa na tayong lumaban! Huwag matakot! SOMEBODY HAS GOT TO DO IT SOONER AND SAVE THE COUNTRY FROM GLORIA’S DICTATORIAL AND OPPRESSIVE ILLEGITIMATE REGIME!!!

  7. goldenlion goldenlion

But these junior officers, most of them can see with their own two eyes how beautiful and wealthy a colonel and a general can get, much to the dimay of some of the idealist among them, they can’t even among themselves agree to which dirction they are all headed to, and to be successful in such an adventure as a triumphant and meaningful coup there is a need of unity by all. Show me a military unit with the same mindset and tomorrow Gloria is History. It is nowhere at the moment.

Perfect example of an evil type of opposition.

Isaiah 1:15-16: When you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; Your hands are full of blood wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your doings before my eyes; cease to do evil.

They have perfected the art of intimidation and deceit.

Yup,I think that is the key to how this kind of exercise can succeed in Thailand although previous coups they did proved bloody, and the King had to intervene. The Thais have pledged to keep their kingdom free that I understand is what the name of their country means.

It’s the thought, commitment and dedication that makes this kind of exercise suceeds in Thailand! Mukhang mahirap mangyari sa Pilipinas especially if we allow the Ale Boba and the Fatso to continue brainwashing the Filipinos that they are a hopeless lot, that they cannot do anything without Uncle Sam, and their only salvation is the unano trying hard to look royalty even when as Spartan has stated “reyna-reynahang DUGONG BUGAW!”

now it’s not that I am trying to “pick-a-fight” in here, I can still remember my last “arguments” with raffy b, which only showed his apparent “sensitivities” to the spicy opinions most bloggers are throwing here towards those politicians like him, who even though we know (but not that sure) is not corrupt, but refuses to act against or continues to be just a “drift wood” being carried by the current of this gloria regime’s brackish water…kaya lang etong si Jun na karakter dito, “hunghang”? Sino ang hunghang? And could please elaborate kung ano meaning ng “hunghang” please?…hindi ko kasi makita sa diksyonaryo yun eh…ano ba yan, salitang “kalye”? What I know is people that “sounds” like you are what can be considered “stupid”, “ignorant”, “blind”, “liars”…and the words could go on to describe your persona. Why “stupid”? Because you are “talking” of things that you’re not even sure of, you’re trying to show you know something or you’re better than the other people here but thru your words, we can all see that your cabeza is as empty as a coconut that was already eaten by a coconut crab…it’s empty, clean, nadah, zipp, nil. Ignorant? ‘Cause you’re not awareof the things that are really happening politically and economically over there in the Philippines, or you’re just completely ignoring the facts? Blind? Because you’re ignorant. Liars? It’s self-explanatory. By the way Anthony Scalawag…or should I also say Jun? Dream on??? Yes sure, it’s free to dream, and you’re not stealing anything…so why not…what I can’t do is “steal, cheat, and lie” like your beloved “evil woman” of a president did and continuosly doing.

After a deadly and furious forest fire, a new and green forest is always born, out of the dead and burnt old trees sprouts younger and thicker foliage.

Thirty years after Martial Law, Imee Marcos said: it was calibrated response to crisis.

An ad hominemargument, also known as argumentum ad hominem (Latin, literally “argument against the person”) involves replying to an argument or assertion by attacking the person presenting the argument or assertion rather than the argument itself. It is a logical fallacy.

    Wikipedia founder forks Wikipedia

    More experts, less fiddling?

    By Andrew Orlowski

    Published Monday 18th September 2006 13:13 GMT

A co-founder of Wikipedia, and its first editor-in-chief, is starting a “new Wikipedia”, using the current version as the starting point.

Larry Sanger describes the Citizendium project as a “progressive or gradual fork”, with the major difference that experts have the final say over edits. In other ways it promises to be very similar: the system requires users to sign up, it will also be based around a Wiki, it will strive to present a “Neutral Point of View”… and it will regularly be touting for donations.

(Wiki is a pun on the Hawaiian word for “labyrinth”) [ * ]

Sanger set up Wikipedia six years ago with former bond trader Jimmy Wales, with money from Wales’ titty portal Bomis underwriting the project. Sanger left in 2001, and in January this year announced a new project called Digital Universe, a web-based resource that employs domain experts, with $10m backing. (Wales has subsequently edited his own Wikipedia bio to diminish Sanger’s contribution, anointing himself sole founder). Explaining the need for a companion project, Sanger said he thought that “humanity can do better” than Wikipedia, and Wikipedia’s shortcomings today were probably unsolvable.

“Wikipedia has already driven off no doubt thousands of would-be contributors, and there are thousands, if not millions, of people who never would think about contributing to Wikipedia in the first place. We want to set up, not a replacement, but an alternative to Wikipedia, a responsible constitutional republic that makes a special place for experts and invites the general public to work shoulder-to-shoulder with them,” he wrote.

Wikipedia has tried to balance the utopian goal of “an encyclopedia anyone can edit” with the more utilitarian goal of “a website anyone would want to read”. With over a million articles, and a rulebook almost as dense, Wikipedia has demonstrated an insatiable desire to participate, create lists and generate procedures. The result is a huge silo of recorded trivia, and perhaps the world’s largest, most distributed bureaucracy – mostly manned by a casual staff of teenagers and the unemployed.

It’s become a huge success in one sense, however. With the formerly unitary, wide open “internet” internet balkanizing into a number of vertical information domains – American teenagers rarely leave News Corporation’s MySpace, for example, using it for media discovery, mail, and messaging – Wikipedia has conquered much of what’s left – the wilds, “commons” or Reever territory. Wikipedia has become so synonymous with t’internet in the public mind, and so synonymous with Google, that the search engine was recently described to your reporter – by a recent broadband convert – as “Wikipedia’s start page”. The news that they were two discrete organizations received a shrug.

That’s quite a brand cachet. How can Citizendium, with its model of patrolling domain experts, even begin offer an alternative?

One problem is that the “better” Wikipedia articles are the Otaku fan trivia, such as lists of Babylon 5 episodes and Pooterish porn trivia. But Sanger doesn’t seem to want to deter that – describing Citizendium it as a collecting house for all kinds of information.

And that makes the more immediate task, removing the cruft, a lot more difficult. Time will tell.®

    [ * Bootnote ] : Not really.

  26. Tribune’s headline states: AFP warns troops against coup attempt; Restive groups lack strong support to oust GMA.

Oh yeah! Tell it to the marines! It’s obvious that these lipservers in the military and the Internet Brigade of the Ale Boba and the Fatso are trying to convince only themselves that they are winning! Nice try.

Our motherland is indeed in such a sorry state, having a usurper in that palace by the Pasig River.

However, if we are looking for a coup, it already happened right under our very noses, with a cabal of thieves disguising themselves as patriotic politicians, civil servants, military officials, businessmen, religious leaders, media persons, intellectuals, so-called oligarachs, etc. ousting a sitting president.

This cabal of thieves, who squabble among themselves every now and then, are bereft of any moral imperative to call for and carry out (much less desire) a radical change in the current dispensation.

What did we do when all this happened? Probably, like most Thais, we merely looked on and stood waiting for the outcome. Like some Thais, some of us may have even relished the prospect of subverting the constitution, justifying the same with the excuse that the government was in paralysis and allegations of plunder and corruption that remain unresolved in court to this very day. At least, in Thailand, it was clear that Thaksin did not pay taxes on the sale of his family holdings.

Why envy Thailand? Why now? Wishing for a coup d’etat is different from wishing for charter change only in the outcome in terms of power-sharing arrangements. In either case, the outcome is not bound to satisfy everyone, giving way for further excuses in the future to again subvert the constitution.

Unfortunately, the tendency towards prostitution of the constitution is strong since, as individual citizens, Filipinos, from the highest strata of society such as oligarchs and academicians to the lowest such as glue-sniffers and politicians, have largely lost any sense of civic duty and responsibility, seeking only and exclusively the furtherance of self-serving interests, the rest of the nation be damned.

Further, it must be remembered that the cabal of thieves who replaced the boorish actor (because, in his sober moments, he actually wanted to help the poor) and replaced him with a whore (which probably reflects their tastes), will let her continue to make whoopee in that palace by the river as long as they remain satisfied. Of course, some of their original members (those who found themselves thoroughly shafted) have since changed their views but have slunk away heads down and tails between their legs out of shame.

A coup d’etat or charter change at this time would only leave our motherland and her children facing more of the same shameless exploitation from the self-serving interests of that cabal of thieves.

Let us then forget wetdreams like coups and charter change. We have been there several times and the climax remains an unfulfilled promise.

There are some, like the young Cayetano, who are trying to battle it out in proper ardor and manner, like a gentleman, against the tremendous efforts and resources being poured by the whore’s minions to make his accusations and evidence (so he claims) look like broken windmills.

Of course, if you really cannot keep it in anymore and despair for immediate gratification, having lost all faith that Don Alan Peter will prevail inside that den of thieves, you can always look up to the masters in exploitation.

Write your favorite US senators and congressmen as well as the White House. After major embarassments in the Middle East, Dubya is desperately looking to stick his boot, spur included, into places where the sun never shines.

Besides, the situation in Mindanao is bound to go down the drain in the next year, maybe as early as the next few months, with the resumption in funding and resupply of the MILF and a revived MNLF by our generous neighbors and their Middle Eastern friends. This would be good for more RP-US military exercises.

    P.S.

Looking at the situation in Thailand, the officers of the Philippine armed forces are probably cringing in envy. Of course they would. At present, no strong and credible military leadership has emerged – one that could commmand the loyalty of all the military branches and commands in a takeover.

Given further that there is very little capability to move significant numbers of troops and supplies across land, air, and water, a coup at this time could readily result in a standoff if several commands or branches refuse to acknowledge or participate in the overthrow of the commander-in-chief.

Such a standoff would not only be embarassing but also comical since there would be no sufficient capability to guarantee that the coup makers can prevail over the holdouts by military force (imagine, for example, if SOLCOM holds out during a coup) – a thought that is unbearable for any military officer worth his salt.

Even more comical is the fact that, despite the military’s inability to get it up anymore, Malacanang stills engages in teasing and foreplay by calling upon them to desist from any untoward and premature thoughts of ejaculation.

  31. Chabeli Chabeli

Although having a coup or a withdrawal of support is NOT THE ONLY SOLUTION to oust Gloria, as there are other extra-constitutional means. But in trying to analyze the recent events in Thailand, I think–of course, I stand to be proven wrong–there is a possibility of a “successful” coup in this country; maybe not exactly as in Thailand; it can be “Filipinized”, as by nature Filipinos are a peace-loving people. A peaceful coup–meaning, one that is bloodless and with minimal damages (and I do not mean human lives)–is possible. Whether it will be supported by the people, is another issue all together.

However, on many occassions, Gloria and her Legions like to say and to insinuate that the Philippine economy will collapse without Gloria! This is simply a “trying-hard” statement because GLORIA AND HER LEGIONS ARE TRYING HARD TO DECIEVE US. How can the whole economy collapse because Gloria has been ousted? Should a peaceful coup happen, maybe the one that will be affected economically may only be the stock market; but nevermind that, after all, the money there belongs to the elite, and foreigners with “hot” money–it’s not suppose to stay there long term, anyways. The exchange rate will not spiral down–after all, it’s the OFWs who are “bringing home the bacon”, so to speak. Our country is afloat THANKS TO OUR OFWs! GLORIA CANNOT BE ACCREDITED FOR THE GOOD ECONOMY, IT IS THE OFWs we should thank! If a coup, or a withdrawal of support from Gloria is good for the people, and WILL ONLY LAST FOR A SHORT WHILE (1 month AT THE MOST), this will release the DAMAGING PRESSURE that has been besetting the Philippines for a long while: it’s called, GLORIA.

    It’s just a thought.

  32. Just talked to my Thai friend. She told me that she hopes things will soon return to normal in Thailand.

Apparently, the country is not normal with the country in a state of emergency despite the atmosphere of calm. The military is presently making sure that Thaksin’s friends cannot do anything to return him to power.

Hopefully, the king will still be able to control the affairs of his country and not suffer the same fate as Cambodia decades ago when Norodom was stripped of his title and the monarchy abolished and the country turned into a killing field.

  33. Chabeli Chabeli

  35. Let us remember that the Cambodians were also Buddhists and a happy people, but look at what the civil war in Cambodia did to Angkor Wat.

The Philippines only need to have all the appointees removed for the country to return to normal, and the people, especially the poor, even those who have not had the luxury ot going to school having his voice heard in the running of his country. In other words, when the voice of the people reflects the voice of God, not some fools saying that theirs is the voice of God as in EDSA 2.

Call now for a CLEAN Snap Election. It’s better than a coup especially when the military led by generals who have their raised palms up all the time. If the Philippines had a Supreme Court for example manned by men of integrity and chosen by the people not by a crook, perhaps, Filipinos will no longer need to envy the Thais!

  36. “A coup d’etat or charter change at this time would only leave our motherland and her children facing more of the same shameless exploitation from the self-serving interests of that cabal of thieves.”

How sad that Pinas can’t find its rightful place among civilized nations. We like to call ourselves civilized and democratic but we are not. As Xenon said, Pinas faces the “same shameless exploitation from the self-serving interests of that cabal of thieves.”

That because of frustration and desperation, good people of the nation are tempted to have a coup d’état is so telling! Civilian tyranny to be replaced by a potential martial tyranny? How extraordinary!

We have a vast majority of Filipinos living below poverty level, families are disunited, children are used and abused, crimes abound, graft and corruption are the order of the day, people in government commit atrocities against the republic with impunity, and we call that civilization and democracy?

And now, lawyer-businessman Cruz is hell bent on going into a selling binge to dispossess our AFP of their bases? What shitheads are they?

    From BBC News:

    US ‘threatened to bomb’ Pakistan
Last Updated: Friday, 22 September 2006, 08:50 GMT 09:50 UK

The US threatened to bomb Pakistan “back to the stone age” unless it joined the fight against al-Qaeda, President Pervez Musharraf has said.

General Musharraf said the warning was delivered by former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage to Pakistan’s intelligence director.

“I think it was a very rude remark,” Gen Musharraf told CBS television.

Pakistan agreed to side with the US, but Gen Musharraf said it did so based on his country’s national interest.

“One has to think and take actions in the interest of the nation, and that’s what I did,” he said.

    ‘Ludicrous’ requests

The extracts from the CBS show 60 Minutes, which will run on Sunday, were released on the same day that the White House praised Pakistan for its co-operation in America’s “war on terror”.

Gen Musharraf is due to meet US President George W Bush at the White House on Friday.

The BBC’s Jonathan Beale in Washington says that Gen Musharraf was deliberately distancing himself from the White House in the face of intense pressure within Pakistan over his close ties to Washington.

He is also due to launch his autobiography next week and some analysts say the timing of the revelation may be an attempt to generate interest in the book.

The White House and US State Department declined to comment on the 60 Minutes interview.

The Pakistani president said that, following the attacks of 11 September 2001, the US made some “ludicrous” demands of Pakistan.

“The intelligence director told me that Mr Armitage said, ‘Be prepared to be bombed. Be prepared to go back to the Stone Age’,” he said.

The US envoy also insisted that Pakistan suppress domestic expression of support for attacks on the United States, he said.

“If somebody’s expressing views, we cannot curb the expression of views,” Gen Musharraf said.

Mr Armitage also allegedly demanded that Pakistan allow the US to use its border posts as staging points for the war on Afghanistan.

Gen Musharraf did agree to open up Pakistani airspace to the US, as well as to share intelligence after 11 September.

American troops are not officially allowed to operate on Pakistani soil although they have launched air strikes from bases in Afghanistan.

In January, 18 local people were killed in a US raid targeting Al Qaeda number two Ayman Al-Zawahiri in a village in Bajaur Agency on the border with Afghanistan.

Five foreigners were also killed in the raid, Gen Musharraf said at the time, amid anger about the attack.

Pakistan’s support was considered crucial in the defeat of Afghanistan’s Taleban government, which Pakistan had helped to bring to power.

President Musharraf has proved a loyal ally though many now will question the means used to extract the co-operation, says the BBC’s Jonathan Beale.

The threat was alleged to have come from Richard Armitage

The US allegedly ordered Pakistan to crush dissent

Good day Ladies and Gentlemen, and Honorable host Ms Ellen, also to Jun.

Our moment of Glory will come! Don’t be envious of the Thais! Inevitably, ours will be justified, it’s all a matter of being patient. Yet, we must be focus of what at the stake, to free all Pilipinos from the bogus Gloria’s bondage. It’s no longer an option, not only in this blog, but throughout, it’s now a need to continue the bombarment of illegitimate Gloria, day and night, 24/7, 365 days until the Arroyos has been kicked out of our house, the people house, Malacanang. I’m certain, we don’t need the military, the PNP, we the people amalgamated is a powerful force that can’t be matched either by PNP and Military. The just cause is on our side, the Constitution. Bogus Gloria and PNP and Military doesn’t have enough bullets to kill us all, the 86 million Pilipinos wanting to be free from fascist bogus Gloria’s regime. Pressure and determination are the key at all times, it must be the objective to rid of bogus Gloria.

WE the people created the institution, and we the people has the every right to do whatever we want, and not bogus Gloria. It’s at our wishes, not on illegitimate Gloria, PNP nor the the military. Those bunch of thieves (Arroyos, PNP and Military – with exception of course) serves at our pleasure, the people. Lets not forget it.

It’s our right to dispose them to our satisfaction, only if we are United.

    Rope!

  48. Ah, ROPE Chair Toney Cuevas has opened the Court Martial proceedings!

On the dock, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, enemy of the state no. 1!

Teka, teka, just want to tell you that a guy who blogs his name as Anthony Scalia is in fact, not a Gloria Apologist. (Even offered him my apologies for mistaking him for a Gloria apologist in a previous post by Ellen!)

I’ve just offered to yield my position of “tagapukpok sa ulo ni Gloria” to him.

Is that alright with the ROPE Chair?

  49. luzviminda luzviminda

    Ellen,
You are exactly right on that. That is the reward promised to Esperon for the cheating they had done in the 2004 election. And you bet that not only promotions but large part of the squandered money of the people. This Esperon deserved the eggs, muds and filths in the face! ESPERON IS A VERY DISHONORABLE MAN IN A SUPPOSED TO BE HONORABLE UNIFORM DOES NOT DESERVE A SALUTE FROM ANY SOLDIER!!! THE PHILIPPINE SOLDIERY DOES NOT DESERVE HIM!!!!

  50. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

Inadvertently, ROPE is founded, perhaps it’s the hemp will finish illegitimate Gloria at last. We can only hope.

I truly believe Ms Ellen Tordesillas is more capable and appropriately so be the President of ROPE. Ms Ellen is very forceful and quite fearless all by her lonesome in going to war with the Arroyos, illegaly self-made institution. Most importantly, it must be recognized, Ms Ellen has a good head start on all us combined together, she understand the Arroyos and the system, the right and wrong. Considerately, Ms Ellen has access to almost everything imaginable, such as the media in which none of us. Ms Ellen is now at the very front of the fight, fighting for her free expression so she can exercise her profession freely, and ours also. I believe, deep in my heart, Ms Ellen is an honest person which is more important resume more than the Jose Pidal Accounts.

Ms Ellen you got 10 second to think about it, and you are it. And I’ll be your moral support. Congratulations!

  51. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

Yes, Military is nothing but hot air and smoke. So lets not put them on the pedestal and be dependant on them Military. They’re not that important in my opinion. As written, the civilians shall have the power over the Military, but not the Gloria’s civilians that I’m talking about, the barbaric. I meant the civilized civilians of the country, you and I, the 86 million people of the country. Over a million people on the street agains the 115,000 military personnel are no match, surely. We got the power!

  52. “We’ll bomb you to Stone Age, US told Pakistan
    FromTim Reid in Washington

“Musharraf reveals post-9/11 threat in book serialised by The Times

“PERVEZ MUSHARRAF, the President of Pakistan, claimed last night that the Bush Administration threatened to bomb his country “into the Stone Age” if it did not co-operate with the US after 9/11, sharply increasing tensions between the US and one of its closest allies in the war on terrorism.”

I wonder whether the former US ambassador to Manila threatened Gloria with the same thing if she didn’t allow the US to hunt down the Abu Sayaff with the AFP (in the guise of Balikatan excersises, which if you realize is unconstitutional (foreign armies are not allowed to perform army duties in local matters).

Maybe, they threatened to dislodge her just as they did to Erap in June, 2000.

  53. There are talks, rumours in Brussels (in NATO & EU corridors) that Bush threatened Blair with withholding the replacement for UK’s Trident nuclear deterrent technology if he didn’t toe Bush’s line and join him in invading Iraq on a lie that Saddam had links with Osama bin Laden and/or Saddam was stockpiling WMDs.

Poor Blair couldn’t very well say that to the British public – that Bush had got him by the balls. If this is true, I will be a bit more sympathetic to Blair.

  54. Of course, Bush couldn’t threaten Chirac because France possesses its own equivalent Trident nuclear technology replacement!

Unfortunately, Blair, not only had to think of British defence investments in the J-27 aircraft fighter (have run in hundreds of millions of pounds with not a model in sight) but also UK is incredibly dependent on the US for many of its defence tech.

France, fortunately, is reasonably ‘independent’ in this respect. OK, not comparable to US defence tech but enough to say to Bush, fukoff!

  55. Chabeli Chabeli

Indeed, we must be united if we would want to oust Gloria. Every single one of us may have our own versions of how to make this country better. A strong Republic is in the hands of every single Filipino–whether living here or abroad. We must remain focused and not be derailed by spins done by Gloria and her Legions. Together we are strong, divided we are weak. That is why Gloria and her Legions do EVERYTHING in their power to confuse the people, so that the unity will crack and divide, she will conquer. Evil MUST be destroyed, for in the Good Book it says, “good will triumph over evil.”
    ROPE is our Hope.

  56. Email from Albert:

Are you envious of the Thais too? Would you rather see our country ruled by the generals than by civilians?

Your articles are amusing but can you write something good about our country? Can’t you be positive rather than negative? Please write about events that OFWs can be proud of?
Can’t you find something good about Filipinos like you and me?

Please be a unifier not a divider!

    Thanks,

    Albert

  57. xenon xenon

It is interesting that Musharraf was injected into this blog thread.

That said, it is ironic that Musharraf is complaining of coercion after he himself took the helm of government by way of coup d’etat. As a result, Pakistan was kicked out of the Commonwealth and with the US and EU whimpering aloud about democratic institutions. With 9/11 in the background and with Pakistan’s intelligence services clearly coddling Osama Bin Laden, what was Musharraf expecting from Dubya Bush? A bright yellow balloon?

CBS should have included a discussion of deceit in its interview of Musharraf. After all, while Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was signing the Lahore Declaration, good ol’ Pervez was stealthily moving troops into Siachen without Sharif’s knowledge and approval.

CBS should also have included a discussion of “jihad” in its interview of Musharraf. After all, it was Pervez who thought up the bright idea of applying “jihad” in Kashmir, in order to take advantage of the skills of fighters left over from the Afghan wars and the numerous “jihadis” that could be recruited from “madrassahs” all over Pakistan.

Not a bad idea, in hindsight, considering that Pervez was able to take advantage people willing to die for their faith into dying for Pakistan’s unending war against India in Kashmir. Unless, of course, you count the number of Southeast Asians who were also trained and indoctrinated for “jihad”, with actual field training in Kashimir even, as a result of dear Pervez’s brainchild. Add to this the “jihadi’s” realization that an extensive and very diverse network of contacts and financing exists to support any aspirations they may have to turn whole islands and countries “green” (certainly not from envy).

The bad idea is the bombing of Afghanistan. Dubya should have bombed Pakistan instead.

Nelbar mentions proxy wars (I thought the term had gone out of fashion). This is a sad issue since, as much as we despise to be proxies for the big powers, the MILF and revived MNLF on the other side of the field are proxies for a conglomeration of interests (not at all democratic) looking forward to the “greening” of Mindanao (afterwards, the Philippines), interests that the US either failed to stop or did not directly address in its war against terrorism.

The saddest part is that our military officers and enlisted men out on the field will be dying for a republic that their own leaders and fellow Filipinos do not even respect.

For those who like to quote from the good book, they can put a copy on the grave of our heroes (the true heroes – not the ones who do not pay taxes and go overseas to earn money, complaining that there is never enough money) who died fighting for the republic and pray that we will all be forgiven for failure to protect the heritage and legacy of our ancestors.

  59. For all you know, all these things about the world being ruled by arrogant fools like Dubya and the Ale Boba in the last days is in the Holy Scriptures.

I’m reading the last books in the Old Testaments and they all mentioned about the Second Coming being preceded by a chaotic state of the world with these stupid men and women taking the world into their hands to gradually destroy, and not even realizing it, using even religion as reason for their personal objectives at the expense of the peoples they claim to lead unfortunately to perdition!!!

The signs are there. I just don’t know how much we are supposed to try to stop a total holocaust, and if indeed we are capable of doing just that. It’s a grim situation.

Nevertheless, we should not allow the crooks to remain there and make life miserable for all the people of the land while they live in comfort as they salivate over their loots!

  60. Who’s dividing who? I don’t understand these asslickers of the Boba when they accuse the majority clamoring for her removal of dividing the Filipino. What they are missing is that the Boba cheated in the election and declared herself winner even before all the votes were properly counted, and despite evidences of rampant cheating and vote rigging.

    To ystakei:

“What they are missing is that the Boba cheated in the election and declared herself winner even before all the votes were properly counted, and despite evidences of rampant cheating and vote rigging”

The cheating was limited to padding the winning margin, to make it appear that the winning margin was a comfortable lead. A 300,000 winning margin is suspicious.

(I didnt vote for GMA. I voted and campaigned for Eddie Villanueva)

Atty. Raul Lambino of Sigaw ng Bayan campaigned for FPJ yet he agreed that GMA won.

You sound as if 2004 was the first presidential election in history with cheating. Please. Perhaps you are missing that fact.

Dun sa mga maka-FPJ: alam nyo ba na kung bakit with all the cheating, the people are not out on the streets supporting your cause?

Simple – A great majority of the people do not like FPJ to be president. Add up the votes of GMA, Roco, Villanueva, and Lacson, and we get more than half the electorate, na ayaw kay FPJ.

  70. “The cheating was limited to padding the winning margin, to make it appear that the winning margin was a comfortable lead. A 300,000 winning margin is suspicious.”

Firstly, we don’t know that Gloria had a winning margin; difficult to believe her when we know she’s lied not once but twice.

Secondly, padding is still cheating, whether by padding her votes with one vote or 1 million votes, that’s still cheating.

“Dun sa mga maka-FPJ: alam nyo ba na kung bakit with all the cheating, the people are not out on the streets supporting your cause?”

I think because Filipinos are very, very patient, are extremely forgiving, so to speak, of people in power and people below poverty line in particular have more to lose if they go head on against Gloria and her troops… just look back in history. How many centuries did Pinoys put up with before a Bonifacio came to start booting the Spanish? Even then, he came up against a brick wall: Rizal.

But pro-FPJ groups being apathetic doesn’t mean that they accept that Gloria has done the right thing.

  71. norpil norpil

i am for fpj but unfortunately i cannot say long live the king now.

  72. Norpil,

I wasn’t for FPJ but I understand why there were those who voted for him and believed he would be a better alternative to Gloria.

  73. xenon xenon

We can look back all we want, to Marcos, to Quezon, or even as far back as Lapu-lapu, but let us ensure that we keep moving forward.

Nothing will bring back FPJ. Nothing will bring back elections and any possibility of changing their outcomes, whether or not the candidates cheated.

Looking back reminds us that there is nothing in recent or even ancient history that shines positively on the squatters who brought stink into that palace by the Pasig River. Absolutely nothing.

Looking at the present, it clear is that the current power sharing arrangements (and the manner in which those arrangements have been used) at the helm of our nation’s ship should no longer be tolerated. However, a mutiny (i.e., a coup d’etat) is not necessarily the answer.

We have Don Quijotes – Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano and Atty. Harry Roque, among others. Rally behind them and help them as they flail against windmills because they are fighting for our dreams. More importantly, they are fighting for our right to dream; they are fighting to have a country, once again, where dreams have the hope of coming true.

Whatever the future holds is not clear. Perhaps, as they are wont to (in any country or nation), our people will again choose as their leaders and representatives, despots disguised as saviors.

Be that as it may, political change should only come by constitutional means. Let us not mock our ancestor’s fight for liberty and self-determination in extra-constitutional exercises. Let us not allow demagogues and fake patriots to undermine and prostitute our constitution.

And, no, I will not be citizen of any country where people actually say to their leaders, “Long Live the King” (or Queen).

We must respect our constitution, our Republic, our ancestors… ourselves. Nobody else will, if we do not.

  76. From The Economist Sept 9, 2006:
    A dangerous example
The malign consequences of the coup may not be confined to Thailand itself. Most governments, with the honourable exception of Australia’s, have been limp-wristed in their condemnation of the assault on Thailand’s democracy. Others in the region may yet draw lamentable conclusions from that. One victim could be the Philippines, with its own long history of coups, not to mention the most recent removal of an elected president, Joseph Estrada, in 2001 through a combination of urban protest and behind-thescenes military manoeuvres. Those in the Philippine army who continue to plot against the current president, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, may be emboldened by the events in Thailand, especially if foreign protest remains muted. In Malaysia there is no military threat, though there is a long-established tendency to authoritarianism within the ruling party, UMNO, that might now be reinforced.

  77. Thanks Josephs for the input.

Well, there’s really no reason why other armies won’t feel bold enough to follow Thailand’s example. However, I’m still inclined to believe that the AFP rank and file today aren’t bold enough to do that sort of thing.

Gloria’s managed to corrupt* the AFP so deeply that it will take years to undo the corruption. She’s managed to turn the AFP into one big banana army, and a bunch of seguristas.

*corrupt as in corrupting the soul, the morals…

“Dun sa mga maka-FPJ: alam nyo ba na kung bakit with all the cheating, the people are not out on the streets supporting your cause” -~anthony scalia

I voted for FERNANDO POE JR.(I also voted for Miriam in 1992 and JPE in 1998)

the people are not out on the streets supporting your cause

Students and youth who voted for Miriam in 1992 also didnt go to the street for protest in 1992. Powerful blocks in the country preferred for FVR due to the upcoming centennial celebrations(1996-1998).

One thing that interest me most is the attraction of Miriam to the students and youth during that time. Maybe its the BACKLASH vote to the incumbent Cory which is confused of whom to support to: the “KAMAG-ANAKS” or TRAPO backed MITRA – who was also endorsed by Jaime Sin.
Sharonians was a factor too for Danding during that time.

Oligarchs, lobbyist, interest groups, elite, clerico fascist forces and FVR/JDV and his ilk studied and did their lesson well in 2004 election.

    anna, ystakei & all:

  79. anthony scalia anthony scalia

    To anna de brux:

Yes, its true, cheating is still cheating whatever its purpose is.

Did you know that under our presidential electoral rules, a protest will be dismissed if it will not affect the outcome?

FPJ’s camp wanted to focus only on the Cebu votes, which will not affect the outcome of a GMA victory. The problem with them is that they thought they could muster another people power if they could highlight cheating in the 2004 elections.

Then showing that GMA is the luckiest person on earth, FPJ died. So did his protest.

“I think because Filipinos are very, very patient, are extremely forgiving, so to speak, of people in power and people below poverty line in particular have more to lose if they go head on against Gloria and her troops… just look back in history. How many centuries did Pinoys put up with before a Bonifacio came to start booting the Spanish? Even then, he came up against a brick wall: Rizal.

Right! And I agree with them. Now, let’s put Gloria away where she belongs so that the country can move on.

  83. florry florry

Anna, that’s what I called a masterstroke, offering a blogger by the name of anthony scalia a part on our rope-a-dope. You really put him on the spot, and in a compromising, if not in an awkward position. He always claimed that he is not pro-glue even if his body language says otherwise and you really exposed him as a fake. He turned down your offer to be the “taga-pukpok sa ulo ni bansot”, even if he knows that it’s only a make-believe and a mock trial of his loving queen. You didn’t give him any other choice and his declining of the offer is quite predictable and expected. Just imagine if he accepted the offer of taga-pukpok, he will be summoned by Gloria labandera at lalabhan siya ng husto, gagamitan pa siya ng bleach at saka ikukula. How cute!

  84. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

How Gloria Arroyo can lead a divided nation with a fake mandate? There was massive cheating in Cebu and Lanao Del Sur provinces in 2004 presidential election. Last month, Loren Legarda and her lawyers have presented to Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET) hard documentary evidence where 60 percent of the ballots were cast, had to be set aside by the tribunal for being obvious fakes. Election returns (ER’s) from Lanao Del Sur, kept in the custody of Congress, were found to have been replaced by crude forgeries. It means that bogus President Gloria Arroyo and VP Noli De Castro were proclaimed by the Philippine Congress based on tampered and fake provincial election returns. Recent whistle blower Arsenio Rasalan cheating expose confirmed that there was break-in at the Batasan Pambansa around January of 2005. During the supposed break-in election returns were allegedly replaced by fakes to conform to the already “altered” statements of votes and certificates of canvass used by Congress in the canvassing. Arsenio Rasalan’s “Malacanang special operation” was intended to produce 10,000 ERs so that the documents in lower house custody would match the certificates of canvass read by Congress during the canvass of votes for president and vice president. Now tell me Anthony Scalia, let’s accept Gloria and move on. Tell that to the Marines!

anthony scalia said:” Probably, kaya Pinoys are willing to accept GMA’s “I am sorry” and move on”.

  85. anthony scalia anthony scalia

    To anna de brux:

“Right! And I agree with them. Now, let’s put Gloria away where she belongs so that the country can move on. ”

If you really agree with them, why put away Gloria where she belongs? Remember, they have allowed Gloria to continue. If we put away Gloria we won’t be agreeing with them.

    To florry the Underwood Blogger:

“You really put him on the spot, and in a compromising, if not in an awkward position”

    I don’t think so.

Anna’s premise is that Pinoys are a forgiving lot, to which I agreed, which might explain why Pinoys put up with Gloria’s “I am sorry.”

If Pinoys put up with her “I am sorry” then they are allowing her to continue.

“He turned down your offer to be the “taga-pukpok sa ulo ni bansot” ”

Hey, I volunteered to watch Gloria and First Get receive whacking in the head, di ba?

  86. anthony scalia anthony scalia

    To Diego K. Guerrero:

Any cheating was on the winning margin. Not on the outcome. without the padding, Gloria still won by 300,000 votes. But that is suspicious, especially to a skeptical opposition who thought Gloria can only win by cheating. So to make the win more convincing, the winning margin was padded.

Take away the fakes and those tampered with, the result is still the same.

The problem with the “united opposition” is that their purpose in unearthing these cheating (making it appear that it decided the outcome) is for another people power to arise. Wrong move.

The piece meal releases of “evidences” cast doubt on its credibility. Another testament to the fragmented erratic operations of the “united opposition.”

“Now tell me Anthony Scalia, let’s accept Gloria and move on. Tell that to the Marines!”

Hey, that’s what I am doing now – posting that here so all the Marines could see it.

  87. Anthony Scalia,

You asked, “If you really agree with them, why put away Gloria where she belongs?”

And pray, tell me, why should she not be put away where she belongs?

  88. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

Facts: Illegitimate Gloria Arroyo as Vice President, plotted and planned to overthrow Legitimate President Estrada. This is not fiction, evidences are on tapes. Also, fake Gloria as VP lead the mobs when she should be protecting the Republic and its constitution. It was a violation of sworn oath to the flag when she raised her right hand…so help me god.

Also on tapes are the voices of Garci and Illegitimate Gloria to deceive the people of the Philippines and obvious conspiracy to cheat FPJ and the people of the Philippines. Gloria, Garci, Generals, others committed fraud against the people.

And among other crimes…Philippines can’t just forget and move on. There must be accountability or we are just making a mockery of our institution and the constitution. Why have them if we’re just going to trash them? It was written as the guidelines for everyone living in an orderly society. If we ignore and dispose of them, we are no better than terrorists.

Illegitimate Gloria is not the victim here, yet millions of Pilipinos when fake stole their sovereign rights to choose.

I’m sure we all have one common goal, but lying, cheating and stealing are not to be condoned, no matter how badly you want to support illegitimate Gloria. Philippines must come first. No one is above the law!

  89. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

To just move on and to forget illegitimate Gloria’s crimes, is saying that crimes against the people are okay. It’s not okay, there must be consequences and accountability. Also read about that there are no alternative to Gloria. Its quite a ridiculous statement to even suggest such. We are supposedly a nation of law and order, and we can’t just ignored of what happened in the past, only because of alternative. People, and all of us are replaceable, that is fact. We shouldn’t even considering alternatives when we should be focusing on prosecuting the criminals first, not matter who the person. What’s important is to respect the law and the violators must be punished. And it’s the only that matter to have a just society. We can’t condone an unlawful act against the Republic!

  90. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

    To Anthony Scalia, et al:

Cheating is cheating-win or lost. Even you reduce GMA’s margin of victory, her mandate is tainted with fraud and deceit. She is guilty for misleading the people and subsequent cover-up in Hello Garci political scandal. Gloria Arroyo becomes an ineffective leader when she lost the trust and confidence of the Filipino people. Trustworthiness is the key factor in effective leadership. Majority of the people believes that she cheated in 2004 presidential election. You cannot change the general public assessment or perception by mere reducing her margin of victory. Honesty is the best policy. You can tell this to Marines!

anthony scalia said: “Any cheating was on the winning margin. Not on the outcome. without the padding, Gloria still won by 300,000 votes”.

  91. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

If we are going to use the same logic in cheating of votes, perhaps we can accept the killing when the person was shot death with only one bullet instead of all the six in the chamber. Should that lesser the crime when the person was shot by one bullet? Or irregardless of how many bullets were used by the killer? Dead is Dead? We should only consider the crime and not the gravity of the crime and let the system to handle the punishment. If there is such thing as fair system.

  92. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

That’s overkill! Gloria Arroyo and her cohorts deliberately over killed the margin of victory by more than million votes against FPJ thru dagdag-bawas scheme and fraudulent provincial election returns.

  93. anthony scalia anthony scalia

    To anna de brux:

“And pray, tell me, why should she not be put away where she belongs?”

Because as you stated earlier, Pinoys are a forgiving lot, and that must be the reason why the implication of accepting her “I am sorry” is letting her continue.

In other words, the always-forgiving Pinoys are not asking for her removal.

To Diego K. Guerrero and Toney Cuevas:

Yes, I agree that cheating is cheating, regardless of its effects.

I already stated this in an earlier post – a presidential electoral protest will be dismissed by the Supreme Court if it will not result to a change of the outcome. If a party only wants to establish the fact that there was cheating, but without the cheating the result is still the same, the protest will be dismissed.

So the analogy with killing is way off.

You know what, even before the “Hello Garci” scandal, as early as July 2004, there had been public acknowledgment that Gloria cheated. Why do Pinoys seem to be indifferent about it? Because of an “anybody-but-FPJ” attitude. Count all the votes except for FPJ, we’ll see that more than half of the electorate do not want FPJ to be president.

  96. “In other words, the always-forgiving Pinoys are not asking for her removal.”

Really? And who are the always-forgiving Pinoys who are not asking for her removal? Lambino and company?

What do you make of the other Pinoys? They are always-forgiving but doesn’t mean that they are not asking for her removal.

In Ellen’s blog, there are many forgiving Pinoys (like me) but they are for Gloria Macapal(gal’s) removal. They may forgive her (by not shooting her in the face) but her removal is still a popular clamor.

That they (the always-forgiving Pinoys) may not be able to remove her outright is one thing but to say that they are not for her removal is stretching it.

  97. You must remember that God also forgives through the priest who hears your confession but the priest has to ask you to do penance to be absolved.

In the same manner that Gloria has to do penance to gain absolution. She must do her penance in prison. Then the Filipino people, who are always a forgiving lot, will then be able to pronounce that “ALL IS FORGIVEN, GLORIA.”

And who are those always-forgiving Pinoys who are asking for her removal? I doubt if Susan Roces, Chiz Escudero et al. have forgiven GMA.

I better rephrase that – of the Pinoys who have forgiven GMA, how many are asking for her removal?

“In Ellen’s blog, there are many forgiving Pinoys (like me) but they are for Gloria Macapal(gal’s) removal. They may forgive her (by not shooting her in the face) but her removal is still a popular clamor”

By the tenor of the posts here, I doubt if people have forgiven GMA. Yes a lot of you may be a forgiving bunch here, but I still have to know if you have forgiven GMA.

“That they (the always-forgiving Pinoys) may not be able to remove her outright is one thing but to say that they are not for her removal is stretching it”

Agreed, but having a desire to remove a president should not be surprising. There is always a clamor for the removal of a sitting president. If a Pinoy, after having forgiven GMA, still wants her out, the reason is no longer on her legitimacy, but on other things – failure to rein in First Get, no results etc.

Like the alleged political killings. I still believe the victims are casualties of a red purge, meant to create in outcry against the government. The NPAs are not beyond that.

So pointing to GMA as the direct cause of the killings is way off.

But if the blame is for GMA’s failure to protect the citizens (victims of the “political” killings) that can be a valid argument against her.

INDONESIA SAYS U.S. OPENED SOUTH EAST ASIA TO CHINA

By Rob Taylor | September 27,2006

CANBERRA (Reuters) – Indonesia chided the United States on Wednesday for paying too little attention to Southeast Asia, warning Washington that its focus on Iraq and combating terrorism globally had opened a door to China..

Beijing’s diplomats had effectively eased fears that China’s rapid economic rise and growing military might posed a threat to its Southeast Asian neighbors, a senior aide to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said in Canberra on Wednesday.

“There have been some contrasts drawn between the U.S. approach and the Chinese approach,” presidential spokesman and adviser Dino Patti Djalal told a security conference.

“There is a perception, rightly or wrongly, that the U.S. is too focused on the war in Iraq and terrorism, that it’s probably not paying as much attention as it should to the region.”

“That has given China more diplomatic space to capitalize.”

Indonesia, Djalal said, had rebuilt relations with China since Jakarta cut ties in 1967, accusing Beijing of supporting local communists in the 1965 attempted coup which brought future strongman Suharto to power.

But surveys since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq have shown anti-American sentiment is on the rise in Indonesia, which has more Muslims than any other nation, most of them moderate.

Washington has made Jakarta a foreign policy priority, last year restoring frozen arms sales and military training programs. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visited in March.

But the 10-nation Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) was critical of Rice in 2005 when she skipped the region’s top security forum.

ASEAN foreign ministers said her absence pointed to a lack of U.S. interest in Southeast Asia. Rice attended this year’s forum.

Djalal said China had effectively used economic and trade ties, educational scholarships, investment and cultural links to build a positive relationship with Southeast Asia.

“China is spreading its soft power very, very well,” he said.

“It has de-ideologized its approach, it has not been heavy-handed in dealing with the region, it has refrained from commenting on internal affairs, it has presented itself as sympathetic, responsible, helpful and agreeable partner.”

The coming APEC summit in Vietnam to be attended by President Bush would be an opportunity for Washington to “reaffirm and enhance” its relationship with the region, Djalal said.
