Otoniel Gonzaga teams up with Dulce

This is one musical event not to be missed.

gonzaga.jpgOtoniel Gonzaga, the country’s foremost tenor, teams up with Asian diva Dulce and the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) in a yearend concert called “Christmas Spectacular & Immortal Arias” at the Philamlife Theater on December 9, 2006.

In the same concert, the MPO under the baton of Rodel Colmenar, will also accompany guest soprano Camille Lopez Molina and flutist Christopher Oracion, two-time first prize winner of the National Music Competition for Young Artists.

Fresh from his triumphant team-up with Lea Salonga early this year, Gonzaga, a winner of the Marian Anderson Voice Competition and the ARD International Voice Competition in Munich, will do a duet with Dulce, a grand prize winner of the Asian Singing Competition in Hong Kong.

Born in Iloilo, Gonzaga received his training at the Curtis Institute of Music under the tutelage of English tenor Richard Lewis and American soprano Margaret Harshaw, and later from professor John Lester.

Gonzaga’s operetta credits include singing over 75 roles including Barinkay in Johann Strauss’ Der Zigeunerbaron, Paganini in Lehár’s Paganini, and Camille de Rosillon in The Merry Widow. He is well known as Prince Souchong in The Land of Smiles; a role he has sung in more than 30 different productions and well over 500 performances. Gonzaga is active on the concert stage, and has worked with many conductors, including Maestros Pablo Casals, Herbert von Karajan, and Eugene Ormandy.

Dulce was the same singer who tried for the role of Gigi in Miss Saigon and got an ovation during the audition. Miss Saigon composer Claude-Michel Schonberg compared Dulce’s voice “to a Boeing 747 taking off.”

A recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award given by the ALIW Foundation in 2003, Dulce is described by music critics as singer non-pareil.

Wrote Jullie Yap Daza of Dulce: “Though her name conjures everything nice and sweet, on stage she is likened to a lethal weapon with its blade as sharp as it is shiny, and the love songs that are her repertoire becomes dangerous territory!”

While Gonzaga will do immortal arias, from Tosca and Rigoletto, Dulce will do immortal love songs
identified with her such as “Memory” from Cats and with With One Look from Sunset Boulevard.

Soprano Camille Lopez Molina who brought the house down in her guest appearance in Opera Now 1 and 2 at the CCP will do a La Boheme duet with Gonzaga.

Flutist Christopher Oracion who shared the stage with Cecile Licad in the Filipino Heritage Festival concert in Paoay, Ilocos Norte, will do Bizet’s Carmen Fantasy and Verdi’s Traviata Concertwaltzer.

Gonzaga’s December 9 concert will open the Great Performance Series at the Philamlife Theater.

The second concert in the series will feature brilliant young Russian pianist Ilya Rashkovsky, first
prizewinner of the First Hong Kong International Piano Competition and second prize winner of the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris. Rashkovskiy will do a solo recital called An Evening of Piano Fantasy at the Philamslife Theater on Wednesday, December 13, 2006.

Presented in cooperation with Philamlife Insurance Company, the Great Performance Series ends on February 24, 2007 with a performance of Romanian violin superstar Alexandru Tomescu with pianist Mary Anne Espina.

    Ms. Ellen:

I know I’m the new person in town, and I’m not one to complain. I just can’t help to notice with quite obvious of what’s happening with your blog. Personal observation, I guess, when one joined a Pilipino blog as your, one can expect the distinguishing feature of Pilipino, isolation and being insulated deliberately. And the trait of sniping by others through a 3rd person and without directing the remarks to the person that provided the message(s). Not good at all! I thought you’ve created an open forum where all without prejudice can ethtically address the person instead, not by artful means of insinuation. What has become in your blog, if you have notice, there are numerous private (undereline private) discussion by certain group(s)and others being purposely ignored, it’s I called by design. It kinda reminded me of the numerous Philippines Institution, e.g. the Philippines Congress, to name one. It’s not a very productive, if you are to accomplish of what I read as your mission in providing this blog, the unification of Pilipinos with one common goal, to a better Philippines – Amalgamated Pilipinos.

Ellen, as you can imagine, you’ve a fragmented blog with contributors adamantly with full awareness refuses to recognize others. If this blog will remain civilized as it intended, discussion should not be done privately to limited contributors, yet others should be welcome. I also, I’m much aware that others are just plain pain in the ass, probably am too. It’s the beauty of open dialogue!

Ellen, am I making sense? Just trying to be helpful, so others will not be intimidated or left out. If others deserve recognition with his/her contribution, recognize the person instead of ignoring the person and his message(s). Lets not be selective, as illegitimate Gloria as the prime example.

I said my peace as I see it. I’m cool!

    Ellen, my apology for off-topic.

Toney, I think you’re a better writer than some of those who claim to be in this blog. We might have many differences (of opinion) especially your stand regarding Bush and the US; but your comments and ideas were mostly beneficial. You’re contributing so much to the group; and I would like to sincerely thank you for that. I’ve been very vocal against Bush and the US government that often made you react strongly; but I think this is the only issue that we greatly differ. The rest, I think we share the same…especially against this illegal occupant of the Palace who continues to make the country and Filipino suffer.

When Arguelles was ambassador here during Erap’s short tenure as president, he tried to educate Filipinos to appreciate real music, and when I say real music, I mean the classical music with sopranos and tenors, and he invited several Filipino artists to introduce them not just to Filipinos but also to Japanese afficionados. Unfortunately, his attempt to educate them was cut short by EDSA 2.

In other thread I wrote about having a deaf boyfriend, who could not hear but taught me to appreciate real music by taking me to concerts. Then, a nephew of mine gave me a record titled “Hook on Classic” and that aroused my interest especially in Beethoven’s compositions that went well with the rock n roll beat. It was neat.

I have a collection of Chopins and Beethoven’s concertos. I also a collection of all musicals by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The first one of his plays that I saw in fact was “Evita” at the West End in London. Since then, I have made sure to see his plays wherever they are available such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Starlight Express, Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of Love, Song and Dance, Sunset Boulevard, and Tell Me On A Sunday.

Right now, they have “Cats” in Tokyo but it is in Japanese. I am not sure if it is as good as the English version.

Sayang, I wish I were there to watch this show.

I’m an admirer of Dulce but am not familiar of Otoniel Gonzaga. I wish I am in the country to listen to them!

Dulce was and still among the best local singers we ever had. She got a terrific high strong voice. Cebu does produces great singers like her and Pilita. My type of music is that of Matt Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Cliff Richard and groups like the Beatles, Bee Gees, Peter and Gordon, Everyly Brothers, Lettermen, Cascades. I don’t quite like rocks and the current rap songs. It’s all noise.

When it comes to classical singer my favourite is Sarah Brightman, no contest. She is full-bodied soprano and a great stage actor, be it musical play the likes of the Phanthom and Evita and she can also do the concert style (harem). For male I pick Peter Gabriel. Miss Salonga is a talent on stage, but not seen much of her perform and certainly not Miss Dulce or Gonzaga either. Being Ilongo, I would love to watch him perform. For Pop and rock I love our own alanis morisset.

Sinong Sarah Brightman?

He, he, he.

    To Artsee:
Kung totoo ang “flash report” mo about …well, good for him! I used to love reading his column in Philstar but eversince , he changed his feathers, I stopped opening the pages of his newspaper!

  11. Vic:

The first time I saw Sarah Brightman was in “Cats” in London. She was an understudy at that time, and still being wooed by Webber. Then, in 1998, she came to Japan for a performance. I don’t know, but it seems, she does not sing like a nightingale anymore after her divorce.

I like the other performer of”Evita,” better, Elaine Page, who is also well known for her role of Grizabella in “Cats.” Sarah is more known for her performance in the “Phantom of the Opera” that I understand was made exclusively for her.

I have acquired a movie of both Cats the original London Play, and the Phantom of the Opera featuring Gerald Butler and Emily Rossum, whose rendition of “Think of Me” I prefer as a matter of fact to the recent performance of Sarah.

I like the Spanish tenor, Placido Domingo, who sang the Olympic Song with Sarah Brightman called “Amigos Para Siempre.” I have seen his performance in Tokyo with Luciano Pavarotti. The only other classical pop star that I liked in fact as a child was Mario Lanza.

I can read notes because I studied piano but had never been able to really play concerto. I sing mezzo-soprano in the choir in church.

I love watching ballet, too. My favorite is Giselle although I think the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in Swan Lake is soothing to the heart. I always went to a performance by the Kiev Ballet Company until the break-up of the USSR.

Music is in fact the language of the heart. People who appreciate good music are more often than not refined and kind even when they tend to be temperamental.

Frankly, I thought Imelda’s project to educate Filipinos in the fine arts during the 1st 4 years of the Marcos regime was commendable. I was in Manila guiding some Japanese tourists when I saw a performance of the Bolshoi a the Rizal Park in the ampitheatre there right next to the Japanese Garden. I actually wondered then where the government was getting the money for such not so appreciated performance because of the lack of appreciation in general by those who had never seen such performance and could not appreciate the beauty of it.

The Russians actually did a repertoire, a kind of a mixture of all the ballet dances they were doing at then newly built CCP to announce and attract people to see their performances.

Dito nga sa Japan ang puro ipinapalabas ng mga pilipino mga kabastusan that do not bring out the good in them. Sayang talaga!

  12. I like Sarah Brightman too. I have a few of her CDs: La Luna and Sarah Brightman sings the music of Andre Lloyd Weber.

She was here in Manila two years ago. I missed it. Ang mahal-mahal naman ng tickets.

  13. Otoniel Gonzaga comes from the musical Gonzaga family of Iloilo. He spent his early education at Central Philippine University.

I remember during my highschool days in CPU, Otoniel and his family (her mother and sister were sopranos) would stage concerts.

I try to watch all of his homecoming concerts and he really has grown to be an accomplished tenor.

  14. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

    Ellen:

I don’t know Otoniel Gonzaga, so I’ve to pass on this one. However, I’m glad that he’s being recognized of his great accomplishment. We can only be proud for him.

I thank you for the response. I would like to think that you’ve something good to offer to all of us, something remarkable, a blog where Pinoys everywhere can offer comments without fear of being harassed or apprehensive for his/her own safety. To agree and disagree, and at the end of the day, we can still all sit down as united with one common goal.

I also would like to think that all of us here are twice better person than illegitimate Gloria will ever be, even in her wildest imagination. As you can imagine, as I’ve noticed, we still got a long way to go. We are no better than illegitimate Gloria, for we are doing the same here with only a handful of contributors, the tendency to alienate others. It’s no different of illegitimate Gloria obvious ignorance and her disrespect to the very existence of the Senators as co-equal as defined in the constitution.

If you will allow me, what is the purpose of your blog? What is your real objective in providing this blog? If you’ve a mission or purpose in life, lets not lose sight of thing what you believe are important in accomplishing your final objective. And isolationism of others by others are not the way to strive in achieving your goal.

Ellen, this is the last time I will touch this subject. I just want to let you know what inside me, and would like to share it with you and your guests.

Thank you for allowing me, I’m very grateful.

  15. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

    npongco:

I’ve nothing but great respect with you and others of what you believe to be just. I can only offer my argument, as the opposite views. I don’t carry bitter hatred nor animosity toward none. And I won’t deliberately ignore others as if they’re not part of this blog. I know such feeling of not being welcome, or as an outsider.

  16. npongco npongco

You said it. It’s not a good feeling to be not welcome. And you know who doesn’t welcome me…this person who mistreated me from day one…this person who suspected me as member of the so called GMA Internet Brigade which she has never proven. Let’s move on…

  17. More about Gonzaga from the article “The Opera odyssey of tenor Otoniel Gonzaga” by Pablo Tariman in July 2005. Excerpts:

Of late he is covering Placido Domingo in the triple bill opening season of the Washington D.C. based National Opera (the second act of Giordani’s Fedora with Mirella Freni, the final act of Verdi’s Otello and the final act of Lehar’s The Merry Widow).

“It is a special honor to be asked by a great artist like Placido Domingo to be part of the opera house he leads. I count myself lucky to have this opportunity. The last and brief conversation with him was in the intermission of the opera The Maid of New Orleans where I covered the role of the King. He asked me if there was anything that I wanted to sing and I answered that the only role ideal for me fro the coming season was Arrigo in Verdi’s Vespri Siciliani. He said okay and a few days later, I got the news that he had asked that I cover for him for the triple bill in the coming season of the National Opera in Washington D.C.,” says Gonzaga.

Gonzaga and Domingo first shared the stage in the Curtis School production of Pagliacci where the later sang Canio and Gonzaga was in the chorus.

It was only in the 80’s that Gonzaga would again encounter Domingo who along with his son was in the audience when he sang the lead tenor role in Rigoletto.

After the performance as Gonzaga was removing his makeup in the dressing room, he heard a gentle rap on the door. The well-wisher said in Spanish, “Could a countryman of yours come in?”

When he opened the door, the stood the majestic Placido Domingo who mistook him for a Mexican. It was in that meeting that Gonzaga reminded Domingo that they had actually shared the Curtis stage in the school production of Pagliacci many years back.

Many good breaks actually happened after this Munich encounter.

It was Domingo’s agent who arranged for Gonzaga’s audition with the late legendary conductor Herbert von Karajan who found the Filipino tenor good enough as substitute for tenor Luis Lima who backed out from the Salzburg production of Tosca because of vocal indisposition.

Ellen, is he related to the TV host Toni Gonzaga?

  19. Toney, you asked: “If you will allow me, what is the purpose of your blog? What is your real objective in providing this blog?”

My answer: This blog is an another medium for my writings. In the same way that Malaya and Abante are other media for my writings.

As the title of this blog says, “Making life worth living”, I dedicate my wiring and for that matter, all the things that I do in life, to making life in this world better and worth living for everybody.

And that is upholding truth and making sure that justice prevails in our society.

  20. Npongco, you asked:Ellen, is he related to the TV host Toni Gonzaga?

    I don’t know.

  21. Toney Cuevas Toney Cuevas

    Ellen:

Again, thanks! You’re a Lady and Scholar! “Justice prevails in our society.” A very powerful message, only if others contributors understand such meaning, Justice?

“Making life worth living.” I wonder if illegitimate Gloria can relate to your battle cry? I think, illegitimate Gloria is missing out of what it is like to be in your position, at least you can close your eyes at night knowing you did something honest and remarkable for your country, worth living.

    Keep your hope high!

Ellen, Glad to hear you’re a Centralian too. I completed my H.S. at CPU and my college at WIT. But all my other seven siblings graduated from CPU, except my youngest sister, who did her pre-med at CPU but took her proper at West Visayas. We carry the spirit..

Artsee thanks for introcucing Sarah Geronimo. Just google search her and may download her songs. If she’s your Idol, she must be a great talent and a great singer. As for our being Ilongo, we are not different from any other, but we are known for being “malambing” and “gastador”. In regards to my nose I can have them “matangos”, but I can’t afford the cost of “Plastic Surgery” and it is not covered by our Universal Health Care unless you bank yours at a serious accident or somebody gave them a nice beatings, which happen to one of my friends and he got his nose reconstructed and careful not to get in trouble again, because he likes what the surgeon did and for free..

  24. Ang sarap marinig ang kanta ni Placido Domingo at nitong si Gonzaga. Sometime ago, I saw a performance of the three top-class tenors in the world today on TV: Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras.

They should have more this kind of shows on Philippine TV to educate Filipinos on the fine arts. Hindi iyon puro sayaw lang ng sayaw!

This reminds me, Ellen, what has happened to famous violinist, Gilopez Kabayao? He is still alive? Wasn’t he also an Ilonggo?

  25. Yes, I think Gilopez is still alive. He is based in Iloilo.

  26. Yes Vic, I spent three years of highschool in CPU. Although I didn’t graduate there, I still get the Centralian newsletter.

Last year was the CPU centennial. Gen.Raymundo Jarque, father of the late Rene Jarque, told me he was there because he was one of the outstanding Centralians. I said, mabuti naman marunong sila pumili.

In the last Otoniel Gonzaga concert with Lea Salonga, I saw a number of Centralians. One was my classmate, Aileen Riego-Javier who is now with the Philippine Kidney Center.

I’m sure I will be seeing some of them again in December.

  27. LIke Elvira, I know Dulce and I like her powerful voice.

Thanks Ellen, Last year a group of Centralians from our city went home for the Centennial including my two sisters, and it was a memorable one for them. Wish I was there too.
