AFP drowns rally for Burgos with music

by Victor Reyes

Loud music played in Camp Aguinaldo by military policemen yesterday drowned out calls of former Vice President Teofisto Guingona and the Burgos family for the release of Joseph Jonas Burgos who has been missing for almost a month now.

Playing of loud music has become the military policy in distracting protest rallies at the camp’s gates.

“We are searching, we are not fighting. A mother should always search for her children. They should stop the music because our voices are being drowned out by the loud music,” Dr. Edita Burgos, Jonas’ mother, said.

She asked President Arroyo to tell her people in the military to listen to her appeal. “Commander-in-chief, I am appealing to you, tell your people to listen to the voice of a mother in the search (for her son).”

Dr. Burgos said she strongly believes the military is keeping her son. The military has denied involvement in the April 28 abduction and vowed to cooperate in the ongoing investigations.

“I believe they (military) are keeping him, otherwise he should have surfaced long ago. All circumstantial evidence points to them (military as behind the abduction)… I believe that he is still alive. I can feel in my heart that he is alive,” she added.

Guingona and Dr. Burgos arrived at the main gate of Camp Aguinaldo along Santolan road in Quezon City at past 11 a.m. in the middle of protest rally organized by the Free Jonas Burgos Movement.

Guingona negotiated with a military officer to stop playing music from a mobile sound system. He said the officer told him he would inquire from his superior officers but the officer never returned.

The sound system started playing novelty songs and disco music from the 1980s shortly after the FJBM converged at the camp’s gate at around 10:30 a.m.

Repeatedly played were the songs like “Pasaway,” “Jumbo Hotdog” and “Kiliti.”

The protesters, numbering about 50, included members of left-leaning groups like the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas, Bayan and Anakpawis.

Burgos, prior to his abduction, was active in agricultural training for KMP members in Bulacan.

While Guingona was negotiating with the military policemen, the protesters got closer to the gate, blocking vehicles going in and out of the camp. Tension rose as soldiers pushed them away with plastic shields.

Some of the protesters were preparing to retaliate against the soldiers when Guingona and Dr. Burgos intervened, pacifying the protesters who later voluntarily dispersed.

The protesters carried pictures of at least nine other victims kidnapped allegedly by the military. One of the victims, Roberto Pascual Sr., was allegedly taken by the military in 1988.

Carl Ala, KMP spokesman, denounced the military for messing up their protest rally.

“They should have shown decency…This is a form of rudeness,” said Ala, adding it is the military which is “pasaway (uncontrollable).”

“They are trying to cover up (their activities). They are drowning us out… They don’t want the motorists to hear what the military is doing,” Ala said.

Lt. Col. Col. Bartolome Bacarro, AFP public information office chief, tried to justify the playing of the “very soothing music” although he said the military acknowledges the right of everyone to air their sentiments.

Asked why the military policemen turned down Guingona’s request for the military to stop playing the loud music, he said: “It is the call of the ground commander. I’m not privy as to the decision of the ground commander why he did not grant his request.”

The PNP-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group is investigating a number of personnel from the Army’s 56th Infantry Battalion based in Norzagaray town in Bulacan in connection with the abduction of Burgos.

Two Army soldiers from the 56th IB summoned by the CIDG to shed light on Burgos’ disappearance surfaced Thursday in Camp Crame but requested they be allowed to remain silent.

Cpl. Castro Bugalon and Pfc. Jose Villena belied accusations they refused to cooperate in the investigations, said Senior Supt. Joel Napolen Coronel, CIDG-National Capital Region chief.

Villena and Bugalon were supposed to appear at the CIDG-NCR office in Camp Crame last Wednesday, for identification by witnesses in the abduction of Burgos.

The two, along with personnel from the environment department, accosted Mauro Mudlong in June last year in Bulacan in connection with illegal logging operations.

  1. I advise Mrs Burgos to turn to a foreign defence attache discretely so the latter could inquire discreetly too.

The military police’s response to the protest rally at Camp Aguinaldo is very uncalled for and a display of ‘Ungentlemanship’. Mga BASTOS!!! They are supposed to be servants of the people. Tama nga si Trillanes, REBELLION IS JUSTIFIED!

  3. Tarantado rin ha. Dapat, next time, magdala sina Guingona ng mas malakas na speaker to drown the noise from the military camp. Hiramin kaya nila ang trucks with loud speakers being used by a patriotic group roaming Japan’s streets especially where there are listeners!

Frankly, agencies that are proving to be useless should be abolished. The young senators should by now be able to size up the country’s situation and work on removing or revising these agencies and rid them of abusers pampered and cajoled by the mother of lies and deceipts, and perfector of graft and corruption.

Talagang bastos!

  9. Its time to face facts – the AFP are out of control, even more so on Mindanao where they stop search and detain innocent citizens without reason. The AFP will never admit to holding Jonas Burgos so its a fair reason to DEMONSTRATE ON THE STREETS.
Surely we can see that the Justice Dept are out of control, The PNP are out of control, the Comelec are out of control, even the majority of Congress operate beyond the rule of law and the constitution.
Its not before time that these institution where brought into line by removing the leaders of these institutions and removing the pork barrel system which breeds corruption because they are all scratching each others backs just to support Schizoglo and get a bigger slice of the pok barrel.
NOW’s THE TIME TO REMOVE THESE LEADERS OF THESE INSTITUTIONS

  11. Chi:

I believe in karma.

  12. chi chi

I agree with Anna’s advise to Mrs. Burgos, she might just get a fast result.

  13. Elvira Sahara Elvira Sahara

Kung pagka-BASTOS man lang ang pag-uusapan, let start from the top…BASTOS ANG pekeng leader(o, di ba ang cheating in whatever form ay the highest form ng PAMBABASTOS sa karapatan ng mga mamamayan?)
    Follow the BASTOS leader!

  15. Mrivera Mrivera

    pareng cocoy,

Edita Burgos at Jason Burgos.

    KAKASUKA KAYO!

  18. Elvie: Kung pagka-BASTOS man lang ang pag-uusapan, let start from the top…BASTOS ANG pekeng leader(o, di ba ang cheating in whatever form ay the highest form ng PAMBABASTOS sa karapatan ng mga mamamayan?)

Talagang bastos! Aba, gusto pa yatang sermonan ang PM namin for allowing the protesters to protest against what her military has been doing—killing Filipinos so she can stay at the palace by the murky river even when she cheated her way there.

Anong klaseng lipunan mayroon tayo?

  22. AFP Chief of Staff and military donkey ass cannot seriously believe that loud music will drown the voices of those who are telling him to produce their loved ones? Did he seriously think that his being “bastos” (uncouth, vulgar, obnoxious, etc.) would discourage the mothers of his victims to search for them?

If that’s the way he thinks and reacts to something so simple, i.e., tell us where our children are, then I may very well believe that his combat boots are too big for him and worse, he perhaps has become psychotic because of all the crimes he has committed against the people.

In that case, Esperon must resign and yield his post to another officer who is sane! We cannot have someone at the helm of the AFP behaving like a rotten donkey ass! (Just look at him and tell me why this so-called general shouldn’t be tagged a donkey ass.)

    Bastos!
