Kin of Glorietta victims ask Arroyo for justice, not cash

By Nancy C. Carvajal
Inquirer

The father of one of those killed in last Friday’s blast
at the Glorietta mall in Makati City, has blamed the government for the death of his son and said he was not hopeful that those responsible for the bombing would be brought to court.

“We do not expect justice for my son’s death, and to those who did this, you owe me one,” Ceasar Vidamo a former Philippine Constabulary colonel told the Philippine Daily Inquirer (at his home in Malabon City, where the wake for his son Niño Ceasar is being held.

Vidamo who described his son, “as a good son, and everything to us” was among those killed, when a bomb exploded at Glorietta 2 mall in Makati City on Friday afternoon, where 10 people died and hundred others were wounded.

Vidamo, who said he resigned from the service after the EDSA 1 revolution, also questioned the timing of the explosion.

“My son was not a victim of an accident, but a collateral damage of a government who wants to divert attention from the present political crisis it’s facing,” Vidamo declared.

He also accused the military of deceiving the public by floating the existence of a group that purportedly carried out the bombing.

A group called the Rajah Solaiman Movement earlier claimed responsibility for the mall bombing in a text message sent to ABS-CBN senior reporters.

“There’s no Rajah Solaiman Movement. It’s just a creation of the military to mislead the public on the real suspects,” Vidamo said.

When pressed where he got the information, he said, he remained in touch with friends in the active service.

“I broke my silence because I could no longer accept what they are doing,” Vidamo explained.

Vidamo’s wife, Zenaida, who was also present in the interview, told the Inquirer she was disappointed with the way President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo commiserated with them at the Veronica Funeral Homes in Pasay City on Friday evening.

The President, she said, simply offered her a job, instead of assuring them that justice would prevail in the investigation of the bombing.

“What I would have wanted to hear from her, was she would go after the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” Zenaida said.

There was no such assurance, she said, as Arroyo simply asked her if she had work and then promised to give her one.

She said the President promised scholarship to another son, sent to school by Niñno.

“My son just died of a bomb explosion … and all she could tell me was a promise of a job … and a scholarship for my other son,” Zenaida told Inquirer, while pointing to her chest.

She narrated that after the President left the room after meeting with the other victims’ families, a woman aide of the president called all the mothers of the victims to another room of the funeral parlor.

She said, when she entered the room, she saw the aide handing out envelopes saying “kunting tulong lang ho galing sa presidente [just a small help from the President).”

“I could not feel her sincerity; I was offended by her action, so I refused the money handed out by her aide,” she continued.

She said she found it offensive to be given money that way.

“Ano yun kabayaran ng buhay ng anak ko? [What was that? Payment for my son’s death?] We expected the President to tell us she would go after the perpetrators to give justice to those killed, but instead she asked kung may trabaho kami [if we have jobs],” Zenaida said.

She said she felt like being handed a “trick” money to stop grieving.

‘”Oh stop crying, here’s some money for your son’s death,” was the message Zenaida said she got from the actuations of the President and her aide.

She said the aide was insistent that her family got hold of the envelope and gave it to her sister.

“The money is still intact, we are poor, but we want our son alive,” she said.

  1. Nice to know indeed that there are still people in the Philippines who live by principle.

My sincerest condolence and sympathy to these parents who have lost a child. As a parent, I can feel their grief and loss. But let them be assured justice will be done in time.

Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.(Romans 12:19)

One of the victims was surnamed Arroyo. One can’t help but wonder how Lying Pang-gulo Gloria would have behaved if one of the victims was an immediate family member.

  3. Garapalan na talaga. Pati ba naman patay ginagamit ng ungas to corrupt!!!

    Patalsikin na, now na!

  4. tikbalang tikbalang

  5. If the Ayalas hire a foreign firm to investigate the explosion, which they have all the right to do, their own findings could put an end to all the bickering. Why? Because their investigators would have far more credibility than the government sponsored investigators.

They should do this regardless of the political consequences because by all accounts, they will be spending money anyway on the victims, etc. What better way for them, if only for their own peace of mind that their properties, tenants, clients, visitors, to be reassured that they are doing everything to prevent being future targets again…

If the findings point to an accident, then they will be able to arrest future errors.

If the findings point to an external attack, then they would want to be able to pre-empt future attacks on their properties.

Either way, they owe it to themselves and to the public to act swiftly before government mishandles evidences.

All big companies in Europe have privates security and investigating firms on retainer. I’m sure the Ayalas have a local security firm at their service too but foreign security firms have the advantage of technology and experience.

  6. vic vic

Aftermath of 9/11 political leaders of all nations whose nationals were victims offered sincere sympathies and together as one, promised them JUSTICE…Cash settlements in millions (not less than a million per victims) followed some three years later including those who were in the U.S. illegally. Now if the President and other leaders would likewise follow the courtesy of not rushing to buy or silence the victims family by doing everything to assist them in their IMMEDIATE needs and let the process take care of the rest..that for once show true leadership…

  7. Vic,

    Agree entirely!

“Now if the President and other leaders would likewise follow the courtesy of not rushing to buy or silence the victims family by doing everything to assist them in their IMMEDIATE needs and let the process take care of the rest..that for once show true leadership…”

  8. Chabeli Chabeli

    Ans,
I’m almost sure the Ayalas are conducting their own investigation. I don’t think anyone would trust Gloria’s men to do the job. All they are out to do is to protect her & themselves.

  9. Chabs,

If so, I wonder if the Ayalas will make piublic the result of their own investigations.

I do accept they have to be cautious — political implications on one hand and liabilities vis a vis the victims.

But I hope the Ayalas will be fortright!

  10. Chabeli Chabeli

Mr Vidamo said it perfectly: “My son was not a victim of an accident, but a collateral damage of a government who wants to divert attention from the present political crisis it’s facing.”

Mrs Vidamo’s words are so admirable: “The money is still intact, we are poor, but we want our son alive.”

To Mr & Mrs Vidamo & family, my sympathies at loss of your son.

  11. Chabeli Chabeli

Ans, I hope they do. I guess if Gloria is going to implicate them directly or indirectly, they will come out & fight back.

  12. Chabs,

The accident angle being floated is very bad for the Ayalas, yet earlier reports seem to indicate that there were what could be identified as C4 residues, the Ayalas should get cracking really quickly now.

  13. It is imperative for the truth behind the blast to be dug out, whatever the cost. If it’s an accident so be it but it is imperative that findings be credible or this nation risks losing more than just 9 lives and injuring 100 in the future.

  14. Chabeli Chabeli

Ans, I agree with you. I had mentioned in an earlier thread that the accident angle is going to be a black eye for the Ayalas. If that will be the final (?) reason of Gloria for the blast, wouldn’t every Ayala property now be suspect for faulty structural design ? Won’t the Ayala reputation for good real estate property be the one that will suffer ? I don’t think for the life of me that the Ayalas will take that sitting down. I can already imagine Don Jaime shouting, “Hijo de P…!!”

Regarding the C-4, I remember distinctly reading in abs-cbnnews.com that a chemist from the PNP Lab reported to Gloria that there were traces of this RDX found in the site of the blast. Apparently, RDX is the main ingredient in C-4. But then I read somewhere in Ms Ellen’s previous threads that because of the rain on the day of the blast that sipped through the ceiling that was blasted open, there is a possibility that the traces of RDX could have been diluted or lost. In a recent interview naman, Ed Ermita says that “..definitely, it is a terrorist attack.”

All I know is that Gloria is up to her Confuse-Divide-And-Conquer tacting again !

  15. Chabs,

Ayala is one group that Gloria cannot buy — hehe! If there’s one single individual business group that’s capable of tangibly helping of kicking her out, Ayala should be it.

    Heh!

  16. Chabeli Chabeli

Hehehhh, Ans. If I say “No Comment” to what you just said, that would be so “no balls” on my part. But you know what, Ans, you really have the feel, girl !

More than what people like to project them to be, they really & truly love their country. Sometimes pa nga, more than the average Filipino. I respect them for that. They are decent people. Gosh, I sound like their PR na ! Hahahhahhh.

  17. martilyo martilyo

  18. The Ayala Group is one of the most respected business groups in the country. The “Ayala” brand name has been nurtured by decades of “above the board” business.

They will NOT allow an intellectual pgymy to destroy the work of seven generations of decent business leaders.

I’m sure that they will do something.I don’t think the Pidals can afford to “bribe” this very respected business house.LOL

    Que barbaridad!

  19. Sorry, Anna, Chabs, I’m not too keen on the Ayalas. I like their malls, especially Greenbelt. As to their politics, they are no different from the yuchengcos, the donald dees. etc.

Since the expose of the hello garci, the ayalas have not helped the opposition. Even the non-government groups.

The ayalas are no different from other businessmen who are willing to tolerate a cheat and a thief as long as their businesses are not adversely affected.

Time will come when gma will be a liability to them. Then they will offer some help to the opposition as their insurance contribution.

Right now, their bet is still Gloria. If this unraveling continues, in a few weeks time maybe, we may see some of them showing up in opposition-organized fora.

They did it with Marcos. They are acting the same now.

  20. luzviminda luzviminda

  21. Sorry to disagree,Ellen. The Ayalas are different from the taipans you mentioned or the lucio tans and gokongweis.

They are not political. But they are not fence-sitters.

Let’s watch them in the context of this issue.

  22. luzviminda luzviminda

Let us pray for the souls of the victims of this tragic incident, the collateral damage of the games of the corrupt generals. Pray also for courage and strength for the bereaved families.

  23. I believe the Ayalas are political, as political as any business group, The Equalizer.

Looking back, the mere fact that they took part in toppling Estrada is an indication that they were political. When they “exiled” Vicky Garchitorena and Rene de Villa to Malacanang following Gloria’s usurpation is indicative that they were political.

They have had to be political although not overtly otherwise they wouldn’t have been able to perpetuate an empire — of course, the empire was built because they worked hard, not saying they established their empire out of nowhere.

But Ellen is right — they are businessmen first.

When I said “If there’s one single individual business group that’s capable of tangibly helping kick her out, Ayala should be it.”, I meant just that, no more no less.
They will do it with the political and business considerations included.

When I said that they ought to hire foreign firm to investigate the blast, I said it because they are realistically the only group (besides being the victims themselves) who have the capacity, clout, influence to insist that a parallel but credible inquiry be undertaken.

Their (Ayalas’ if ever they investigate on their onw) findings, whether they clash with those of government’s could be good for the country, i.e., can be used either to appease the public or to launch a topple Gloria movement.

    Nothing more nothing less.

  24. Chabeli Chabeli

No need to say sorry, Ms Ellen. Your opinion is respected.

I also prayed for your family and the families of the others that God gives you the strength to go on with your lives. Ka hanga hanga po kayo..in not accepting the money..it seems be that immediately GMA doles out money.. ang message niya “Ninakaw ko ito sa inyo kaya tanggapin at magpasalamat kayo.”
Let us all be united in our prayers and as said in today’s gospel let us be persistent in our prayers and let us not be weary..May the souls those who died in this incident rest in peace..Eternal rest grant unto them Oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine unto them..amen.

Are the Aboitiz and Ayalas associates? I know the Ayalas are in insurance and land development and the Aboitiz are in shipping. They are both business families from generation to generation..and as in any business money is the goal..where money is, that is what they will follow..ethics? aywan. conscience? aywan. christian values, aywan? seguro mayroon but aywan. sana tulong tulong sila sa paghanap ng katotohanan..katarungan at kapayapaan para sa ating bayan..
Zobels, Roxas (of Nasugbu)but I would not be surprised if they are related if not by blood by affinity. Somewhere along the line..related ang mga ito..hindi ba Tuason si Mike and if I am not mistaken..Matute Tuason ang lahi niya..

..I don’t think the Ayalas will do anything..whatever they lost in terms of money they will get sa insurance..all their properties are insured- Lloyds of London. And what do they really care about ordinary folks? It is simply an exercise in futility to expect anything from them..one way or another these people are related..not maybe by blood, but by affinity…

  36. Ellen, we visited the victims in both Rizal and Veronica funeral parlors. Nag-uzi lang, since both buildings are less than 50 mtrs apart and not too far from my house. (At that time, 9 have been confirmed dead.)

About Ayala, they are insisting that the “accident” happened outside, which is unfortunate because it muddles the truth. The only purpose I can think of right now is insurance and legal issues.

I’m not sure if they have allowed it, but as far as I can remember, terrorist acts are not covered by insurance. Ayala, I guess, wants to recover their expenses for the hospitalizations, funeral services, building repairs, and business losses which they cannot do if it were a confirmed terrorist attack.

Secondly, if they are successful in pointing to the exact point of explosion as outside of their “guarded” AOR, then they could even avoid a class action suit that more than a hundred victims can possibly file against them. Victims will always blame Ayala Center’s lax security that should’ve been tighter following the thwarting of a bombing incident in Tacurong. That is their biggest headache to date. That’s the reason they are extending all sorts of help to the victims, to ensure the victims’ grieving relatives that they are a benevolent lot and that they should be spared of any damage suit.

Any investigation, therefore, on the part of the Ayalas would be simply to recoup their present losses and avoid large-scale damage payments to the victims.

The bottom line always comes first.

Speaking of the Ayalas in big business in the Philippines, the Lopezes of Meralco are also in big business but are’nt they bankrolling the Pidals? If I remember it right, the Marcoses grabbed big businesses in the Philippine left and right. Bombings in Business Center was also the tactic of the Marcoses, the Plaza Miranda bombing?

I used to work at IL-FGU Group and the standard insurance coverage does not include acts of war or terroism unless iba na ngayon. If their policy includes a rider to include the risk, then they will be able to claim. Mahal ang premium but kanila naman yon compania kaya, kaya nila. that is why more people believe that the explosion is planned by arroyos men. people dont see the sincerity of arroyo in handling the tragedy. you dont just come and give out money to victims then go. they are in pain and this will be an insult to them. why let the people know you are giving money? she should have assigned her staff to take care of the victims in the hospitals and assures the family that she will give them justice.

If this was an ‘accident’, I urge the victims to file a class lawsuit against the owner of the Glorietta.

We will only know if Gloria and her Super Sekyus do not fear Trillanes and will let him reveal what he knows in a proper forum.

  48. Chi,

The families of the victims, dead or alive, should contact the newly organized group of lawyers ready to offer them service on contingency for a class lawsuit against the owner(s) of the said mall. It’s a slap on Glue-r-yuck’s face when Mrs. Vidamo refused to accept this job and a scholarship for her son from our FP (Fake President). The GCC countries should not support specially KSA to keep the dollar present condition. They should drastically depreciate it to exchange rate of SR.2.5/US$ (as economist views). It will be more favorable for the KSA OFW as their income will be 67% higher than present. Our family will love this as Php to US exchange is only stable at the rate of 43-44. Still the Kingdom backed with the lowering value of dollar as expression of sympathy. No doubt ARAMCO ties remain. Peace to the HEROES!!!
