Danger signs

Gloria Arroyo is in big, big, big trouble.

The society matron, the businessman, a police officer, a taxi driver, a sidewalk vendor – almost everybody believes that Arroyo and her officials are behind the bombing of the Glorietta mall that has claimed the lives of 11 persons and injured some 120.

It didn’t help that her strongest words were directed at “those who seek to destabilize our government … for their selfish political motives” rather than to perpetrators of the crime.

The bandit Abu Sayyaf group denies any hand in the blast, and the public readily believes it. Rajah Sulayman Movement, a local terrorist group composed of those converted to Islam, claims responsibility for the bombing and the public (even police and military authorities) refuses to believe them.

National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales says the bombing is the handiwork of local terrorist groups on their international fund raising campaign. Everybody just shrugged it off.

Detained Senator Antonio Trillanes says the blast “is most likely another tactic of the administration to divert public attention away from the controversies hounding GMA” and there’s a public chorus of agreement.

This witty remark from one of my blog visitors two days after the carnage and no suspect has yet been apprehended reflects the public’s connection of the blast with the controversies hounding Arroyo: “Sino ba hinahanap nila sa security videos? Madali lang iyan. Mga lalaking nakabarong, may dalang brown paper bags!” (Who are they looking for in the security video. That’s easy. The guys in barong carrying brown paper bag!)

    Yup, Ellen.

If only they followed Tongue’s remark, identified na nila ang mga involved sa “bomb me” !

I requested my sis in the province to ask her neighbors and those frequenting her house about who they thought was the mastermind/perpetrator of the Glorietta bombing. Lahat din ay nakaturo kay Gloria.

“Gloria Arroyo is in big, big, big trouble”, indeed.

  3. TurningPoint TurningPoint

    gloria – small prisidint
    glorietta – smaller than gloria.

Glorietta – the bombed area and it’s how gloria will be reduced to. Malapit na, the danger signs are now unfolding before our eyes.

Gloria Arroyo is in deep shit. She is the last person to be trusted. The Glorietta 2 bomb implodes directly to Gloria’s pea brain. It’s a reserve explosion coming from Hello Garci political scam, ZTE broadband scam and bribery scandal. GMA implosion is imminent. Only time can tell.

  6. Etnad Etnad

  8. rose rose

Danger signs for Gloria? or sa bayan natin?
“Gloria is in big, big trouble”? Kung hayaan natin siya we will be in much, much bigger trouble. As Tongue said..”gising na Pilipinas, tanghali na..huwag na natin ipabukas pa” tuloy ang laban!

  9. rose rose

The mad bomber in Malacanang will, in turn, fuel further criticism, an exceedingly fragile pillar of support for the illegal midget president. People are angry over the way the administration is sidelining this Glorieta incident, of course, there’s the possibility that, in some chain-reaction-like fashion, the dike will simply burst and we will catch sight of something closer to the fullness of Punggok’s downfall – sure to be far beyond anything we now imagine.

This is the last chapter on punggok’s regime, the year of living dangerously, In the wake of revelations of ZTE,suhol scandals, and the recent warrantless bombing we have already embarked on what looks distinctly like a constitutional crisis which may come to a full boiling point. In the meantime, the President and her gangs of crony appointees, acolytes, legal advisors, leftover neocons, spy-masters, strategists, spin doctors, ideologues, lobbyists, and congressional backers are intent on packing lies on the people with supporters of an obscure philosophy of unfettered Presidential power called the unitary executive theory and then foisting a virtual cult of the imperial presidency on the country.Punggok faces a traffic jam of reality piling up in the environs of Malacanang. They are busy digging an answer on How long will the omniscient and dominatrix-style fantasies of Cinderilla wannabe in Enchanted Kingdom will triumph?

  19. I doubt that the GLORC is even bothered by all these criticisms. Baka pumapalakpak pa nga ang ungas. We’ll see in a day or two ang susunod niyang kabulastugan.

Meanwhile, patuloy ang batikos! Ipakita na talaga ang galit ng bayan. Enough is enough!

Dapat alamin din ang connection doon sa matabang mama na tinitignan siguro ngayon if he would take credit or not for this mess gaya ng pag-ako niya ng credit sa pagtanggal kay Erap in 2001 at pagbibigay laya doon sa JI para makapaghasik ng lagim na ibinintang pa sa pinatanggal nila.

  20. DJBRIZALIST DJBRIZALIST

The truth is the first and highest virtue of every rational human being. If and when we make mistakes about our interpretation of certain events, we ought to be willing to admit it. Else we are as bad as those we accuse of falsehood. Let me be the first to admit that I am often wrong. I highly recommend this form of catharsis. I hope Mr. Trillanes will try it sometime. He would lose no face and only gain the credibility he has so wantonly lost and wasted with intemperate and immoderate accusations that are given ample amplification by the bullhorns of the mass media.

This is Dean Bocobo at Philippine Commentary.

  21. Dean,

Would be good if you could interview Trillanes and find out what he knows and why he suspects govt men of having a hand in the blast.

Right now, we are not sure if he has some inside knowledge after all, am pretty sure he has military contacts still and am convinced there are officers who open up to him. (That’s how it works with ’em guys…)

  22. You went on the attack yourself by alleging the jihadists were guilty so maybe you and Trillanes could meet in the middle.

  23. Ellen,

I hope that this blast is not gonna drown out the more serious chargres against Gloria, the ZTE-NBN scam, the payola she made to her politician guests, etc.

Imagine, if she’s let go on account of the blast, she’s getting a Christmas bonus. People should fire away, no let up… gotta tackle these problems. Can’t give her any kind of moratorium.

  24. Huwag iyong pare para patakbuhin to be president of the Philippines. Nada!

  25. You bet, Tongue, the time has come for the reckoning.

Gising na Pilipinas, padilim na naman!!!

    Testing. Hindi ako makapasok.

So let us assume that it was an accident Dean Bocobo. That still fails to dilute my anger at the callousness of offering a job and a scholarship to the Vidamo family, instead of condoling with them in their hour of bereavement.

Can money really buy everything? Can it wash away the grief? It hasn’t bought my anger. It has intensified it.

F_ _ _ rationality. The Pinoy has too much of it. Puro pasensya, puro magsawalang kibo. Meantime, people go hungry, dreams are snuffed out, and all is explained away by this statisfics fudging woman.

  27. From what I personally know about AT4, he wouldn’t just blurt out things he doesn’t really know or have no evidence of. Has he matured politically while incarcerated only to show the opposite? I don’t think so. He knows people listen to his every word.

It would be reckless to just accuse anyone blindly without proof.

Norbie Gonzales says, “Sira-ulo lang ang pwedeng gumawa niyan” in the context that it was Magdalo who planted bombs in Oakwood in 2003.

Hey, wasn’t he a self-confessed member of Marcos-era Light-a-Fire Movement who were responsible for many bombings during that time? The Magdalos never blew anything during Oakwood. Now, is he admitting he is a looney?

Another fish caught in the mouth!

  28. rhy_me1975 rhy_me1975

for me its either an accident or a work of arroyos men to turn away the pressure on them regarding the different controversies. if you check every bombing by terrorist, there will always be a group who will admit doing it. but in this case only arroyos men are saying its a terrorist attack. no groups until now admitted doing the attack.

another thing, on their interview i cant see on their faces any reaction, parang wala lang. usuaully if you condem the acts you can see in the face na galit.

so there is a possibility that its a diversion to put out the pressure in malacanang.

possible din na its an accident since initial reports says lpg is the cause. i think there are restaurants in that area that holds lpg inside a room which caused an explosion due to the hot climate

sana lang whatever the cause of the explosion they let the people know the truth

  29. Re Tongue’s ,”Hey, wasn’t he a self-confessed member of Marcos-era Light-a-Fire Movement who were responsible for many bombings during that time? The Magdalos never blew anything during Oakwood. Now, is he admitting he is a looney?”

I’m trying to get a copy of Fr. Ed Olaguer’s book on the Light- a- Fire Movement. I understand Norberto Gonzales’ extensive experience on bombings is chronicled there.

On Oakwood, no blood was spilled in the 19-hour seige.

If Trillanes and company were “sira-ulo” like those who bombed PICC during Marcos time, they could have blasted Oakwood and Glorietta 4 at that time.

  30. Welcome back, Dean.

Nang makita ko sa TV na bumisita sa ospital, I switched off the tv, I didn’t want to hear her voice either when she made her statement on Glorietta blast.
After the bombing accident, I sent sms message to my sister working in PDIC just to make sure she was ok. Thanks God, she was safe but sad to say that three of her officemate were injured from the blast. She also admitted to me that Gloria and her minions, their first suspect.
Yes, Gloria is in big, big trouble.

  36. TT:
I feel that some here should actually read this to try to understand how insensitive and so corrupt in their minds to think that a life is so cheap to be bought by a white envelope.
    Justice for Niño.
VidamoThe father of Niño Vidamo blamed the government for the death of his son and said he was not hopeful that those responsible would be brought to court.“We do not expect justice for my son’s death. To those who did this, you owe me one,” Ceasar Vidamo, a former Philippine Constabulary colonel, told the Inquirer in his home in Malabon City, where the wake for Niño was being held.“My son was not a victim of an accident, but a collateral damage of a government who wants to divert attention from the present political crisis it’s facing,” he said.Vidamo’s wife, Zenaida, recounted her disappointment at President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s reaction when they met her at the Veronica Funeral Homes in Pasay City on Friday evening.“What I would have wanted to hear from her was she would go after the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” Zenaida said.Arroyo offer spurnedInstead, she said Ms Arroyo asked her if she had work and promised to give her one. She said Ms Arroyo also promised a scholarship to another of her sons.“My son just died of a bomb explosion which could have been carried out by people who could be hurt by what is going on, and all she could tell me was a promise of a job … and a scholarship for my other son,” Zenaida said. She said that after Ms Arroyo left the room, a woman aide called the mothers of the victims to another room.In the room, she said she saw the aide handing out envelopes saying in Filipino: “Just a small help from the President.”“I could not feel her sincerity, I was offended by her action, so I refused the money,” Zenaida said. She said that although her family needed assistance, as Niño was the sole breadwinner, she found it offensive to be given money that way.“What’s that, a payment for the life of my son? We expected the President to tell us she would go after the perpetrators but instead she asked if we have a job.”She said she felt like being handed “trick” money to stop grieving.“Oh, stop crying, here’s some money for your son’s death,” Zenaida said, crying.

  37. No godd trying to defend this corrupt government to me. I just want to see them hinging high from the highest lamp post.

  38. No good trying & hanging high, sorry I’m so angry with these do gooders, we don’t hear from them for months then when they speak they’re talking crap.!

  39. So what if this is an accident? Somebody or someone has to be nade legally responsible still for this seeming negligence even on the part of the security there to keep the mall safe for people to shop in.

The families of the victims should be encouraged to file a class lawsuit! It may be something new in the Philippines, but the families of the victims may try starting a trend. Tignan lang natin ang magagawa ng unified action laban sa mga kurakot even among those business organizations that have been part and parcel of the overall graft and corruption in fact.

Accident angle????? Bunker fuel is a low volatile petroleum product. It needs an igniter or detonator in order to explode or burn. An igniter, it can be an intense electric spark, C-4 explosives or TNT dynamite. Okalahoma City bomber Timothy McViegh built a fertilizer bomb. He used 2,300 kg of ammonium nitrate (agricultural fertilizer), an explosive motor-racing fuel and drums of diesel fuel. These low volatile materials need a detonator to explode.

  44. Diego,

Although commercialized on line, the site I found says that C4 plastic explosive is “Very strictly controlled. Explosives authorisation and End User Certificate required…”

The on line blurb also says:

CA high quality, very high velocity military plastic explosive.

Our C4 is supplied in bulk drums, in a slightly powdery form. Upon manipulation the material immediately consolidates into a rubbery fully plasticised mass which may be kneaded and pressed into any shape. The material has excellent mechanical and adhesive properties, and may be stretched into long strands without breakage.

In its original powdery form the explosive may be poured into charge containers, then pressed into intimate contact with the liner.

  46. RDX is also known as plastic explosive and even if Gloria insists that the explosive residues found in the blast site is not C4, RDX it seems is a major component of C4 (according to Wikepedia).

“C-4 is made by combining RDX slurry with binder dissolved in a solvent. The solvent is then evaporated away and the mixture is dried and filtered. The final material is an off-white solid with a feel similar to modeling clay.”

Former Senators John Osmeña and Raul Manglapus founded The “Light a Fire Movement” while in exile in the United States. President Ferdinand Marcos called them ‘steak commandos’ to embarrass them. They torched the floating casino in Manila Bay. LFM lobbied in US Congress for the reduction of US military and economic aid to the Philippines. The ‘steak commandos’ exposed Marcos’ hidden wealth and fake World War II medals published in the San Jose Mercury News. Malaya newspaper founder Jose Burgos Jr. reprinted Mercury News’ Marcos fake medals series. MISG Col. Rolando Abadilla raided and closed down Joe Burgos’ mosquito paper WE Forum. The rest is history.

  56. Diesel Fuel when near-perfectly burnt produces bluish smoke, otherwise it’s black.

The first footages taken from cellphones and aired at ANC were blanketed with clouds of white.

Diesel Fuel does not get burn easily even if one throws a cigarette butt on it. In a car, it burns in a compression pressure of 500 psi or higher in its “mist” or molecular form, and not on its liquid state as in the case in storage tank.

In open space like the lobby of a mall or even in a basement, it’s impossible to have a perfect combustion or a “bluish or a no smoke” situation. Why? A perfect combustion inside an engine is still a “holy grail” for mechanical engineers.

And still a white smoke is out of sight, because perfect combustion => no smoke, and partial combustion => black smoke [unburnt carbon].

Assessing the power of a bomb involves four factors: VOD or velocity of detonation; strength; sensitivity; weight; and length of storage. Military explosives are normally of high VOD and average 4500m/sec and above…

Likewise, the bomb that exploded in front of the residence of the Philippine Ambassador Leonides T Caday was a high explosive, type C4, which according to statements made by Rusdiharjo and by the Philippine Minster of Foreign Affairs was smuggled in from the Philippines.

    http://www.infid.be/bombterror.doc

So is it a C4 bomb or a Diesel Tank?

I can only wish that the next explosion we’ll hear is that of her mole!

  61. Diesel Fuel Tank?

Why is there no black traces of smoke on the immediate vicinity of the tank itself?

Why there was a 5 inch hole beside the supposedly blown up cover of the tank? What caused it?

How can one explain when some survivors heard two explosions?

If there were two such explosions, would it be right to conclude that the first was indeed that of C4 and when the celling collapsed, the tank below was punctured [hence the 5 inch hole] causing spark from friction, igniting its accumulated gas vapor at the upper portion of the tank, resulting in a second explosion?

If this is what had happened, still why there were no traces of soot?

In fact, if it was a tank full of fuel, it would have been enough to burn down a major part or even the whole building.

  62. Tilamsik,

The whole WTC Complex was scheduled for demolition because it has come of age. A perfect candidate for “Terrorism Hoax”.

Malabo ang motion for reconsideration niya. If it gets elevated to the Supreme Court, his conviction would be affirmed. Seldom does SC revert the lower court’s decision unless there’s a solid legal basis. Kahit na kasalanan ni Davide, the SC would protect its institution. 2. Isa pang dahilan at ito ang mas naniniwala ako: Erap wants to be with his ailing mother’s side. His mother is not only ailing but dying. She would be gone any moment any day from now.

In Hollywood, studio executives sometimes ask screenplay writers to revise what they’ve written to correct some inaccuracies, to prevent possible lawsuits, to insert a subplot here, to remove a character there, or simply to make the story better.

    It’s called vetting.

The problem is, vetting sometimes makes the story more convoluted. Pretty much like painting yourself into a corner.

It’s indicative of a story that is not planned well enough.

It’s just like Gloria’s poorly written Glorietta script. The plan was to use the bombing to divert people’s attention away from the mounting evidence of bribery and corruption. Also, it could serve as a nifty excuse to declare
    Martial Law.

What her scriptwriters hadn’t reckoned with is the magnitude of the people’s distrust and contempt of her. Hindi bumenta ang script. Sobrang nilangaw.

That’s why they’re all scrambling to vet it by floating the accident angle.

Luckily, they’re also botching the vetting — the script is becoming more and more implausible. I can count with one hand the number of people who are buying the government story.

  85. Equalizer,

Re proliferation of generals (you’re forgetting the foreign postings pa like Gazmin, Wong, de Leon, Abu, etc): Actually there are more than 4 if you consider Presidential Advisers on Terrorism (Benjie Defensor), or Cimatu on OFW affairs, Senga is somewhere too plus a handful of Undersecretaries in various cabinets postings, DOTC and DND, etc. Even ex-CSAFP Boy Abadia is somewhere in her cabinet.

I don’t mind seeing generals in positions of responsibility in government. My reason is that most military officers who get to that level possess the education, the know-how, the organizational savvy, the analytical mind and the discipline to tackle the most difficult jobs in civilian posts.

In other words, they can do the task but what is suspect here is following the Hello Garci scandal, we witnessed an incredible proliferation of generals at all levels not to speak of having about 2 or 3 Chiefs of Staff in one year… for instance Benjie Defensor was chief of staff for less than 3 months! Then followed by a few others whose stint as CSAFP is really useless because of the incredibly short period of time spent on the post.

Septic methane gas explosion??? Believe it or Not? So, the police investigators are now gathering scattered human waste (tae) around the walls and ceilings for traces of methane gas. I have not heard news about septic tank gas explosion in the Philippines. What’s next? Fart bomb explosion? Oh, come on please give as better script.

Makati blast not caused by methane-diesel mix’

Experts from the University of the Philippines-College of Engineering thumbed down on the theory that the blast last Friday at Glorietta 2 mall in Makati City was caused by chemical and gas leaks.
Chemical engineering professors Ernesto dela Cruz and Wilfredo Jose, faculty members and students said it was unlikely that a leak from the tank containing thousands of liters of diesel at the mall’s basement caused the blast.
The engineers said diesel is not a volatile substance and will not explode as a liquid at any rate. They said it has to be in a gaseous state and has to vaporize before it can explode.
They said that for diesel to vaporize, it has to be heated to up to more than 200 degrees Celsius inside an engine.

I have only respect and admiration for Adebrux, the reason being, I learn the most from those who disagree with me, yet are not in the least disagreeable. She keeps me honest.

Regarding the C4 traces, I heard Barias yesterday hint that the collection of that specimen violated the rules of accident investigation, including documentation of how it was collected, when, where, by whom and how it was handled. He also said investigators could not explain how alleged RDX traces were found inside a plastic bag and survived a powerful explosion.

As for methane gas explosions, just google around a bit to discover how deadly and forceful they can be. In Russia last March 109 miners were killed in a methane gas explosion. They happen frequently at landfills, near volcanoes and often take down entire houses, buildings and even sewerage treatment plants. When methane mixes with coal dust, diesel fumes and other hydrocarbon based fuels, you can get even more lethal mixtures that can explode with devastating force.

I’m willing to wait for the report. Hope EK will make it public for our scrutiny. If credible, then I would still blame Gloria for she has zero credibility that even if she’s already telling the truth, hindi pa rin kapani-paniwala. Iyan ang napapala ng sinungaling!

  121. klingon klingon

Teka, its also too early to tell if the explosion was just an accident. Incidentally, according to military sources, the PNP iteself does not have any qualified bomb experts. Those that they (PNP) have, trained only for 45 days and are not qualified as EODs who can disable bombs and investigate explosions. EODs train for one to two years intensively. EODs are usually military. That is why, we should wait for the report of the US and Australian experts who have been invited to assist in the investigation. Some of our cops are so excited to announce their “hilaw” findings, they end up confusing the public. Or worse.

  122. klingon klingon

Personally, I think the PNP is also playing a political game. First they announce the presence of RDX and C4 immediately throwing suspicion either on the military, or rogue elements or rightist elements. Some commentators were quick to insinuate that either Magdalo or Marine stand-off officers were involved. Later, when it is pointed out that RDX and C4 elements are inconsistent with the evidence, the PNP backs off nad now says, its probably an accident, again, contrary to the evidence.

  123. I just got a note from a strong supporter of GLORC who cannot and will not be able to change my opinion against her bad and evil regime. Apparently, the crooks are now strongly recommending the accident angle most probably after talking with the Ayalas when they failed to convince the people that the short woman, who loves to show off even her panties, has nothing to do with this bombing.

All the more reason now to pray for God’s vengeance upon all these crooks!!!

  124. pechanco pechanco

Iyan nga eh…ngayon pinapalabas na accident na. How could it be an accident when the explosion was so strong? Experts say it’s so strong that the roof got blown up. Kung accident lang hindi daw ganyan kalakas.

  125. Tilamsik,

This treating of Filipino nationals as second class citizens is what I hate about the Philippines. Kumukulo ang dugo ko when I see Filpinos being treated lower than these foreigners in their own country.

I am for the class suit against the Ayalas, etc. involved in this blast. Tignan natin ang magagawa ngayon ng mga militant lawyers who have banded together to help the oppressed.

Someone said the Ayalas are patriotic. Oh yeah?

Reminds me of the Sorianos in fact who owned the San Miguel Brewery. Never been impressed of these people in fact. Mas gusto nilang sabihing mga kastila sila!

I really cannot understand the mentality of people like the Pidals who think that they are better off speaking a foreign tongue among themselves, and make others feel inferior if they speak only Tagalog or any of the local languages. Iyan ang tarantado sa totoo lang!!!

I, myself, have learned to speak 5 or more major languages of the world, but I don’t feel better than anyone. I just thought it was the most practical thing to do, and make use of the language that I have studied and learned to speak. I consider it more a blessing and a gift from God that no one should feel more superior than anyone.

  126. Ang bobo naman. They may try going to the Japanese embassy in Makati and ask for help from the ambassador to send a bomb expert from Japan to see the real cause of the blast. Magagaling ang mga pulis namin dito when it comes to investigating bomb-related cases as a matter of fact–sans politics!!!

One of the secretaries at the embassy there comes from the police as a matter of fact.

Sa totoo lang, it would be very embarrassing to be asking foreign police force to solve this case but for the sake of justice, it needs to be done, I guess. Baka may matutunan pa iyong talagang gustong makagawa ng matino.

  128. pechanco pechanco

Did they find out who bombed Hiroshima?

  133. duren duren

    knives,

I have been vocal in criticizing Ms. Ellen about that. Most of her articles are positioned to attack, for self vendetta to the President that she sorely detest. Even positive results are met with usual skipticisms. Parang hindi na tama kasi nililito nya ang mga readers which may only cause even more division. Remember the star wars line? “Only Sith deals in absolutes”.

If we open our eyes and mind more widely, may makikita kang kabutihan. Or would she prefer anti-arroyo topics because these are the popular ones? …I always wonder.

  134. “usual skipticisms” everyone I know treats this lying, cheating imposter with ‘usual skepticismn’ with everything she says and does, can’t remember hearing someone without skepticismn for this evil bitch. Ellen os one of many,

    duren,
