Be afraid, Gloria

Much as Lorelei Fajardo tried to put up an undaunted stance saying her boss, Gloria Arroyo, did not feel threatened by the massive turnout for President Cory Aquino’s wake and funeral, it was obvious it was plain bravado.

Arroyo’s fear of the people was betrayed by the script that they executed when she visited Cory’s wake at the Manila Cathedral early morning of Wednesday, upon her arrival from the United States and a few hours before Cory’s interment.

About two hours before Arroyo arrived, her advance party came. I saw Mike Defensor, former presidential chief of staff and now chairman of the Philippine National Railways. He was followed by Mai Jimenez, one of those very close with Arroyo whom she installed as a director of the Asian Development Bank.

Later on, Finance Secretary Gary Teves came. Teves was with Arroyo in the U.S. He was bumped off in the list of seven people who would participate in the Obama-Arroyo talks in the White House for Medy Poblador, undersecretary assigned in the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs.

Poblador, who is more known in the political circles as Arroyo’s “bag woman” because she has been reported to be the source of fat envelopes given to congressmen, members of clergy and persons that Malacañang needs to win over, wanted a photo with Obama.

(By the way, Teves was not the only one removed from the original list of those participating in the meeting with Obama. Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro was also bumped off to accommodate Presidential Adviser for Climate Change Heherzon Alvarez.)

I’m not sure if Poblador, who had worked in Malacañang during Aquino’s presidency, also came to the Manila Cathedral. No one I asked saw her.

A member of the organization of Former Senior Government Officials related that minutes before Arroyo arrived, a group of what looked like government employees came. Those who were helping in managing the wake thought they were another usual group of government employees who have been coming to the wake the past three days risking the displeasure of Malacañang. What they did not reckon with was Malacañang’s insecurity and craftiness.

When Arroyo arrived before 4:00 a.m., those pre-positioned government employees clapped. Mga pala pala!

It must have been fear of being booed that Malacañang thought of having their own pala. It was really bad taste.

The outpouring of grief over Cory’s death, which surprised everybody even the Aquino family, to a large extent, was also the people venting out of their anger over the Arroyo administration’s abuse of power and corruption in all facets of governance.

During the funeral march, I asked people who were chanting “Cory! Cory! Cory!”, what they want to do with Arroyo. They immediately changed their chant to “Gloria resign! Gloria resign!”

There were some who shouted, “Bitayin si Gloria! (Hang Gloria!)”. I pray we won’t come to the point that we would have to replicate here what happened to the Ceausescus of Romania.

What blogger Phil Cruz should serve as warning to Arroyo and her associates:

“When Cory’s health was gradually waning a few months ago, I was hoping and praying that she would be able to get well enough again to lead the nation in one final battle against Gloria’s schemes to stay in power. I believed that there was no one with the moral force to lead us except her.

“When she passed away, I was devastated. Who will lead us now?
“But it seems her death is the divine answer to the plea of millions like me. Cory will still lead us.. stronger now even in death.

“She has once again reignited the fervor of a slumbering people. I can feel the tremor building up.

“Be afraid, Gloria. Be very afraid.”

  1. that tremor, unfortunately, has waned… it was but a passing quake, now even the aftershocks are beginning to become insignificant.

well see, i hope and pray that i am wrong…

    ELLEN,

Tribo, that’s what I’m also concerned about.

Like you, I’d be happy to be proven wrong.

Goria: do you think you can afraid me? Far, far away!

    Tribo,

What made you say that the effects of Cory’s death are becoming insignificant?

People are continuing to flock the Manila Memorial Park to offer flowers, prayers, and letters of thanks. Same goes for their house in Times St. Churches still dedicate their masses to her. Congress’ declaration of Cory and Ninoy’s status as national heroes is merely a formality, as people already think of them that way. In death, her legend only became larger.

The higher the respect for Cory rises, the lower Gloria’s popularity sinks. They couldn’t be more different, and the harsh light of comparison makes the current president’s faults more glaring. Throwing mud at Gloria’s opponents is what this administration does best to muddle the issues. They can’t do that to Cory now. It’s within our culture to respect the dead, especially one so beloved by the people.

Some of my friends, usually apolitical, now talk about how “kapal” the Congressmmen will be if they still pursue cha-cha. On Twitter, and I’ve seen a lot of the younger ones say they’ll honor the former president by voting in 2010. If anything, it is cynicism that has waned because Cory reminded us that good governance is possible, and it’s up to us to make it happen again. She will definitely be a rallying point in the coming elections.

I think the reawakened awareness of many Filipinos last week can still be sustained until next year to ensure GMA steps down and never again return to the top post (be it President or Prime Minister).

Pag pinilit ang ChaCha at parliamentary ang shift ng gov’t model plus without any prohibition for an incumbent President to run as an MP, the Aquino children, esp. Noynoy and Kris, have the obligation to initiate political activities or mass actions to counter ChaCha.

Media is also crucial in constantly reminding us about the critical national issues that Tita Cory felt is unfinished before she died. I was struck last night in a panel interview of people close to her, including Jun Lozada, and I was taken aback by one of the last things that Tita Cory told Jun L. in one of their last conversations:

“Marcos had the will to remain in power, but this lady (i.e., GMA) has the will to cling to power.

Kaya nga sana may isang media documentary show or talk show who would highlight memoirs of Tita Cory’s latest political statements or commentaries before she died para manatiling sariwa sa atin ang laban na nabanggit niya kay Jun L.

Ako personally almost gave up on our fellow Pinoys kasi parang namanhid na tayo sa ginagawa ng mga namumuno, pero my faith in our people was rekindled by what I and my family experienced last week. Like Ellen, I took an informal, verbal polling of people who participated in the wake and funeral march of Tita Cory, and I was really surprised that ALL are unanimous in their response that they are not just sympathizing with the bereaved family, but they are also expressing their disgust, anger, and frustration with the GMA administration and the worsening graft and corruption in gov’t.

I honestly thought that we are now ripe for a new people power to bring down Gloria. The fervor among the people is there, but where is the leader? Remember that Cardinal Sin called on the people to converge at EDSA in the first people power, and the people came. Who can fill in the shoes of Cardinal Sin this time?

Mom I lied when I told you that my friends and constituents believed me that you never lied !!!!!!
The truth is everyone believes that you always lie. Am sorry mom, now that your floating in the air not knowing where to go, STOP TELLING LIES and start telling the truth so that the course of your journey may change.

kaibigang boy bawang (cornick)…mas malaki pa ang di deklaradong assets ng pamilyang HYBRID NA BUWAYA,nakakalat in the form of investments, partnership at etc.

    NO TO TRAPOS 2010!

  20. May tanong ngayon kay panggulong, este, pangulong Arroyo. Paano kaya niya maipapaliwanag ang more than 100% na paglobo ng kanyang kayamanan?

Such ostentatious display of decadence and opulence of Gloria reminds me of Marie Antoinette. Remember the quote “qu’ils mangent de la brioche”, roughly translated “Let them eat cake”. Marie Antoinette was guillotined on 16 October 1793. Her entire family suffered the same fate. Such was the fate of leaders who become drunk with power.

O to be truthful, Poor, Poorer, Poorest? O, kaya wala nang plastikan pa–FAILED as in F…U…

    Girl,

  29. It does not matter who took the lavish/extravagant $20,000 dinner bill…It is the timing…it is the delicadeza, it is the kabastusan…it is the arrogance…it is kakapalan ng mukha…it is the kawalanghiyaan….ito ang legacy ng mga Arroyo at mga tuta nito…boto ako sa NOYNOY FOR PRESIDENT…NOYNOY is the only qualified person for a true change…the rest…puro may mga sabit…

  30. Bukang Liwayway,

After the two Edsas, parang wala ng gana ang mga taong umalsa. But I can see a lot of movements in the internet. Dr Jose Rizal used the mighty pen. We will find a way to get rid of this boobuwit sooner or later. The boobuwit should really be afraid!

Keeping SONA promise: No more foreign debts

The Arroyo government is keeping its availment of foreign debts in check. In the State of the Nation Address delivered by President Arroyo last July 27, she highlighted how her administration “exorcised” foreign debt.

In her speech, she said, “Kung meron man tayong malaking kaaway na tinalo, walang iba kundi ang utang, iyong foreign debt (We defeated a big enemy, which is debt, our foreign debt). Past administrations conjured the demon of foreign debt. We exorcised it.” (Read: Lower RP debt: Truth or spin?)

    http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/business/08/10/09/

Blow out pala ‘yun dahil WALA na tayong utang.

Ano, may masasabi pa kayong labang sa panggulo namin? Natameme kayo, ano?

Ako merong masasabi – ‘utang na mo, gloria!

I think that all it takes for this tremor to become a thundering avalanche is for Gloria and her minions to make one mistake relating to Cha-Cha, elections or emergency rule.

She could still push the Cha-Cha envelope further to the very edge of the table and drop the hot potato on somebody else’s lap as she has planned – the Supreme Court Justices. If the SC Justices decide in favor of Gloria’s schemes, that’s it. The avalanche will come.

Now if Gloria backs away from Cha-Cha, she will pretend she’s wholeheartedly endorsing the 2010 elections. But they will already have rigged everything to favor their candidates. Smartmatic and Comelec pretty obviously are going to bungle this election in a magnitude too horrible to even contemplate. Again the avalanche will start.

Meanwhile a leader or leaders in a similar but certainly lesser mold than Cory will most likely have risen to the occasion to give direction to this avalanche right up to her doorstep in Malacanang.

This will then trigger Gloria’s next option – emergency rule. She will call on the military to enforce her will. The military will be divided. Majority will disobey her orders. Gloria will fall.

This can all be avoided as everyone knows if Gloria simply decides to step down and helps to have clean elections and a peaceful transition to the next President.

It’s her call. She holds the trigger button.

I agree with Scout (comment #5). Some of my friends and even me who were apolitical are now starting to show disgust to the arroyo gov’t. I used to hate people who criticize arroyo for every little bit of scandal she goes through. It’s because I think that there’s no better replacement for arroyo yet so why don’t the people just calm down, get on with their lives and let arroyo do her thing until she finishes her term. However, with all these brouhaha, hypocrisies and indifference arroyo is showing, I’m also beginning to hate her. I now wish for her term to end asap!

Believed to be the most corrupt president in Philippine history, according to popular polls, Arroyo knows she can be slapped with multiple criminal charges the minute she surrenders immunity.

And not just in Manila but elsewhere, like San Francisco, where she and her husband reportedly own properties, and injunctions can be laid against questions of laundered money.

Now what does Obama know about all this? The president might only get a 15-minute briefing from an assistant secretary in these circumstances, because the president already has a feel for Southeast Asia. But one thing he’s sure to hear about is a CIA report alleging that her husband bagged a vast amount of money in the Middle East, intended for Filipino development, and promptly handed over half of it, for safekeeping, to his brother, a congressman.

He forgot that his sister-in-law is a Phil-Am Californian, where property is divided 50-50 in case of divorce. So what did the wife do? According to this report, she sued for divorce, leaving the “First Gentleman” with the choice of going after the money and thus revealing its source, or just writing it off. But that’s just for starters.
