Payola spread like butter

From ABS-CBN online:

Opposition leader Sen. Panfilo Lacson on Tuesday revealed that three people in the government asked for millions of dollars in kickbacks for the P329-million national broadband network (NBN) deal with China’s ZTE Corp.

Lacson referred to the three people as “a Commission on Elections official” the “big one and little one.” The senator said the COMELEC official was supposed to get $55 million in kickbacks and $75 million for the “big one” and the “little one.”

He said that officials of ZTE Corp., the Chinese firm awarded the broadband project, were also asked to allot $68 million for the administration’s campaign kitty in the last May elections.

7 of 10 believe GMA is corrupt

by Ashzel Hachero

Despite the much-touted anti-corruption campaign of government, 71 percent of Filipinos believe President Arroyo is enriching herself through corrupt practices, a survey of the Social Weather Stations showed.

Twenty-four percent said they do not think Arroyo was corrupt while 5 percent had no opinion, the survey conducted from July 18-20 with about 600 respondents from the Mega Manila area (National Capital Region and the nearby provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Rizal and Laguna) also showed.

The survey, commissioned y the United Opposition, asked the respondents on their belief in the “involvement” of officials in corrupt practices.

Denied

Denying motions of the defense lawyers is more of a rule than an exception at the court martial hearings of Maj. Gen. Renato Miranda, Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim and 26 other officers in Camp Capinpin, Tanay.

It is so predictable that even before the seven-person panel would come back from a recess to confer, reporters have already written in their notebook, “motion denied.” And so far, we have not made a correction in our notes.

It was under this despotic atmosphere last Friday that Air Force Maj. Gen. Fernando Manalo entered the court room. He was the third ranking officer to be called after Rear Admiral Petronilo Magno and Maj. Gen. Pedro Insierto were expelled by peremptory challenges of Lt. Colonels Achilles Segumalian and Nestor Flordeliza.

Metro Manilans do not want Estrada in prison

Public sentiment is overwhelmingly in favor of former President Estrada.

That’s the reason why Gloria Arroyo and her minions are panicking over possible public reaction on the Sandiganbyan’s verdict on Estrada’s plunder case.

Survey conducted by Social Weather Station last month showed that a high number in Greater Metro Manila do not want Estrada going to jail.

Challenging the unworthy

Camp Capinpin,Tanay – One of the accused alleged “mutineer” challenged Armed Forces Chief Hermogenes Esperon last Friday not to interfere in the court martial proceedings of the 28 miltiary officers involved in the aborted Feb. 2006 withdrawal of support from the Arroyo presidency.

Army Major Jose Leomar Doctolero said, “I pose a challenge to the convening authority not to interfere with the proceedings here.”

Doctolero said from the very beginning of the court martial, all he has been hearing has been, ‘order of Gen. Esperon.’

A cookbook by Magdalos

pulutan-cover.JPGThe Magdalo is cooking something.

But not a coup that preoccupies the paranoid minds of Gloria Arroyo and her henchmen.

At the ongoing International Book Fair going at the World Trade Center on Roxas Boulevard, you will find at the booth of Anvil Publishing, “Pulutan: From the Soldiers’ Kitchen”.

The book is written by two of the detained Magdalo officers, Ensigns Elmer Cruz and Emerson Rosales. My friend, Yvonne Chua, and I edited the book.

Please get a copy. You will find the book delightful not only for its recipes but also for the anecdotes behind many of the items there.
