A Makati court hearing the multimillion peso class action suit filed by a group of journalists against First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo yesterday ordered the plaintiffs to appear before the court and submit a manifestation on whether they intend to pursue their case or not.

“The plaintiffs in this case are directed to submit a written manifestation as to whether they intend or not, indeed all of them are inclined to pursue this case,” said the order signed by Makati regional trial court branch 143 Judge Zenaida Galapate-Laguilles. This is our statement which we will file in court today:

Who’s next?

Makati Mayor Jojo Binay joined last Friday’s march for Jayjay Burgos, who was abducted more than a week ago.

We noticed that during the hike from Pioneer st. in Mandaluyong to the Edsa Shrine in Quezon City, Binay was constantly on the phone. Little did we know that a few hours later, we would be called to rally for him as the devious tentacles of Gloria and Mike Arroyo tried again to grab power in Makati.

Binay was at the march for Jayjay as a member of the Movement of Attorneys for Brotherhood, Integrity and Nationalism, Inc. (MABINI), a lawyers group that gave free legal assistance for victims of Marcos’ dictatorship. Other Mabini members at the march that we recognized were former Sen. Rene Saguisag, former Environment Secretary Fulgencio Factoran, and Ed Araullo.

Mike Arroyo sees the light?

Mike Arroyo yesterday announced that he is withdrawing the libel suits he filed before 46 journalists.
The announcement was made in a 12-paragraph statement read for him by Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye, which was about his recovery from what he called “a dreadful ordeal”.

He quoted Fr. Fernando Suarez saying “there are times when God performs miracles to remind people that he is there.”

Mike Arroyo withdraws libel suits vs journalists

Malacañang announced that Mike Arroyo, husband of Gloria Arroyo, has decided to withdraw all libel suits he filed against 46 journalists.

Part of Arroyo’s statement read by Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye: “In sincere gratitude to a nation that deserves a more harmonious leadership, and as a gesture of peace to the many kind hearts who have helped my family weather this crisis, I have instructed my attorneys to withdraw all the libel suits pending before the courts.

“Seeking redress for all the grievances that the libel soughts to address now pales in comparison to taking on a genuine chance to make peace and to pursue a more positive and constructive relationship with those who will accept my offer of a handshake.

“I am determined to keep in touch with the God that has been magnanimous to me, and to let His spirit of generosity steer me through any future conflicts.”

My reaction:

I’m glad that mike Arroyo near-death experience has made him see the light. I hope the libel suits were not the only ones he saw.

Lies moms have to tell detained officers’ kids

“THE lies that we have to say just to protect them.”

Jopay Sales related a story about her three-year-old twins, Frances Danielle and Daniel Francis, showing how the detention of her husband, Capt. Frederick Sales, has taken a toll on their family life.

A week before their graduation from nursery school last month, Frances and Daniel were in their school bus. Everybody was excited about the graduation ceremonies. The kids were looking forward to their parents going up the stage with them, especially those who would be receiving awards.

A better man

Satur Ocampo, Bayan Muna partylist representative, by showing up more than a week after an arrest warrant for him was issued and submitting himself to the jurisdiction of the court, has shown the Filipino people and the world his respect for the rule of law.

He showed that he is a better person than his accusers, especially AFP chief Hermogenes Esperon.

Ocampo exposed a skill by Esperon known to the public only now: grave-digging. The AFP chief can surely can put it to good use when Gloria Arroyo is ousted from her stolen power and he goes down with her.
