Batangueños give Noy-Mar warm welcome

I covered the Batangas rally of the Liberal party in Batangas last Saturday. The mood was celebratory.

The atmosphere was that of victory- at- hand.

There were no known stars. The LP’s presidential bet, Benigno Aquino III, was the star. People waited for him, shouted his name and reached out to him.

He didn’t deliver a speech. He told stories about his parents (as usual) and conversations with strangers to illustrate the sorry state the country is in today and his determination to change all that.

Mario Ignacio of VERA Files and Dana Batnag of Jiji Press, shared their photos of the twin rallies.

  1. He told stories about his parents (as usual)…

He told stories about his parents (as usual)…

Gosh… that must have been booooorrrriiing….

  3. Anna, not boring at all.His speech was conversational. Engaging the audience with anecdotes. And the people listened.

  4. Compared to the crowd that the Villar Sunday rallies attract, the twin rallies in Batangas were small. One sixth probably. But they were more animated.

In the Villar rallies, there were many big-name stars plus Willie Revillame. In Noynoy rallies, there were no big stars. It’s Noynoy that the people waited for.

Here’s VERA Files’ short item on Villar’s GenSan rally: http://verafiles.org/main/photos/bringing-political-rallies-to-another-level/

I’m doing a story on rallies. So I try to cover political rallies of all parties. Tonight, I’ll cover the Erap rally in Cavite.

Napansin ko din to noong last Ayala rally… he was enjoying talking to “masa” people… ang tagal at matiyaga syang nkikipagkentuhan sa gitna ng kalsada… i admire him for that… very simple and humble ang aura..

  6. Ellen,

Not boring? Talking about his parents (as usual) and his mother doing a multo if people didn’t vote for him? Anecdotes? Hmmm… OK. I suppose gone were the days when political discourses/speeches were stateman-like and now, presidential contenders need to do some levelling down.

Personally, i cannot connect to a speech anymore full of abstract words whether be in a graduation nor more of that in a political campaign rally. People from all walks of life have to feel comfortable with the candidate and not feel “yeah, yeah—heard that schmuck before…” Noynoy is being natural this way. Hereabouts, we started being cynical with the incumbent mayor when he first started in offive but when we saw his sincerity, we did what we had to do as responsible citizens of this place even always going pro bono! That’s what a leader should be—he cannot solve everything really yet he should have qualities that inspire the citizenry to help solve everything! It’s all in the attitude!

Precisely my sentiments a lot earlier, like most old timers I was looking forward to a leader/statesman, who had the appeal of Marcos when he talks, speeches that rain down fire and brimstone, and promising that his vision will lead us to the land of milk and honey…
…only to be stuck with an ordinary looking, balding, nerd, with a shy smile who actually “talks” to you, listens, asks questions, talks about his family, his father, his mother, his sister(s), his friends. He doesn’t make any promises like ending poverty (poor people will always be with us – its biblical) but talks about “doable” things like curbing corruption, etc., etc. I would have gone for someone with “dating” like Villar and Gordon because as an old timer I’m used to be being talked down to by an authority figure but actually converse with one?
Its like the culture shock you experience when joining a multinational company where everyone addresses each other by the first name even the CEO, as you were trained to call the boss “sir” or “mam” from day one…
We are actually getting more real, more hands on, and more practical…we have the opportunity to take responsibility for our lives, our actions, and not pine on a leader who will solve all our problems for us…we have to do our share, the leader’s job is to provide an environment where each and every one of us gets a fair shot…thats all we ask…

Beats me. Someone told me once that staying single at this late age means you’re either gay or extremely selfish, but I’ve met people who are stayed single but are good people liek Ellen here, so its not true…
If I were Noynoy I’d be doing the same thing, take my time, wait till I’m president, that way I can get more girls…then again, opportunities like that are wasted on those who don’t want to enjoy them…it will be something to see though when he finally looks for the first lady, as she will have to go through his sisters, his nephews, and the whole country…

  12. You’re right Jug. I don’t think there’s anything remotely wrong with being hands down; first name basis in multinatl corps has indeed been the order of the day in business for a long time now, much like my teen-age children addressing their aunts and uncles including friends of mine of long standing by their first names; much like me addressing my mother in law by her first name.

With regard to Aquino, I just hope his ability to tell anecdotes about his sisters and his mother doing a multo will help him when he talks to G8 and G20 nation leaders if and when he becomes president and like his voters, they will find him engaging.

  13. Anna, the speeches in rallies or even Noynoy’s anecdotes become boring for reporters who cover the rally after hearing it for the third , 4th and nth time.

It’s basically the same speech in all the rallies. Imagine if you cover two rallies a day, you listen to the same speeches, you tune out after the second.

For the embedded reporters, those assigned to follow a specific presidential candidate, that’s something that they have to suffer all throughout the 3-month campaign.

  14. During the 1986 snap presidential campaign,Cory Aquino would start her speech with , “Nang buhay pa si Ninoy……”

When she became president and she went to the United States to speak before the joint US Congress, she also spoke before different groups and delivered also the same speech which started with, “When Ninoy was alive….”

  15. With regard to Aquino, I just hope his ability to tell anecdotes about his sisters and his mother doing a multo will help him when he talks to G8 and G20 nation leader
    ——————————–

    Anna,
In these matters, Noynoy could learn a lot from GMA…what a waste, if only our passing leaders are honorable enough to relinquish power when its time and the new ones humble enough to admit that they can learn from them, we could not be reinventing the wheel everytime we have elections like these…after all thats being said about the little lady, she has some qualities that would have made her one of the best we’ve seen, as I said, what a waste…
I’m not even sure Noynoy will win, in my mind its Villar’s game and he owns it. It would have been interesting though if he did…with Villar its quite predictable…

  16. rose rose

Noynoy seems to be comfortable with common people and enjoys being with them…nagkaintidihan sila…ang mga intellectals look down on us ordinary folks…simply lang ang buhay..pero buhay na buhay ang pakiramdam nila sa isat isa..he will be a president who would lead a gov’t for the people and by the people..kahit ang sabi ng kanhyang kalaban siya ay abnoy or autistic..Marcos was intelligent..Arroyo has a doctorate…but were they good leaders? intellectual leaders look down on ordinary people..kaya ang pangakit nila ay mga artista..pero nakikinig ba ang mga massa sa speeches nila…sana manalo si Noynoy…at mukhang siya ang mas nakakaintindi kanila..
he seems to be the better candidate to help them..he speaks the same language as the massa..

  17. I can very well imagine Ellen!

But I’m sure those who hear a speech for the first time love Aquino’s stories about his parents and sisters (can’t think why they would be of national interest) and the multo “threat” — but I’m perhaps the odd ball because I would find such speech contents, well… a bit strange for a presidential contender.

  18. Oh, he talked about how his father, Ninoy, would tell him the importance of education. Which is what he said he will try to give to Filipino children by curbing graft and corruption.

    🙂
    ————————–

We’ll, if Noynoy will go along the same lines, and say “when my mother was still alive…” it could work, knowing how Cory is admired worldwide and will solidify our position as staunchly democratic, fighting for it generation after generation…
…Noynoy will be doing exactly what Moses told us a long, long time ago – Honor thy father and thy mother…

  20. rose rose

ay ano kung binata siya…hindi ba ang sabi nila sa ating mga pangulo..ang asawa nila ang naging problema….Imelda at eva pa..erap with all his girls…ang maging problema lang niya ay wala siyang first lady…but tutulungan naman siya ng mga kapatid niya…what’s the big deal if he has no wife? bakla siya? what is wrong with being bakla? malay natin siya ang manalo…ordinary folks can talk to him and he will listen and will understand their problems…

  21. she went to the United States to speak before the joint US Congress, she also spoke before different groups and delivered also the same speech which started with, “When Ninoy was alive….”

Is that so? So the son is using the same technique, eh?

I guess if Noynoy decides to open his speech with “When Tatay and Nanay were alive… “, would be alright. But I strongly suggest he refrain from telling anecdotes about his sisters — nobody abroad gives a hoot about them, certainly not foreign leaders.

  22. I don’t know, all this time we’ve put “family” at the back of the line as most of us focused on “more essential” matters…putting back the family on the forefront would be something radical, and more timely, maybe the leaders of the free world could take a hint from this and realize that oil, economy, foreign debt, terrorism, global warming, wars …should take a step back and focus on what really matters?

  23. …then again, he’s not a family man himself…but maybe, a good son can connect with others who they themselves are good sons and daughters, who’s relationships with their fathers and mothers and sisters are as real as Noynoy’s?

  24. she has some qualities that would have made her one of the best we’ve seen, as I said, what a waste — Jug

Vis-a-vis foreign leaders, I think she’s made an impact. First, she became an item of curiosity because of her height; a dimunitive woman who exuded self-confidence and strong will. That’s how she came across. Second, she could rattle out numbers and “facts” one on one with virtually no notes (seen and heard her up close). There was no nonsensical attitude in her when she’s abroad speaking to foreign leaders. She may be playing it up but I think it works, hence it’s possible she comes out as impressive, and from one so tiny, it’s a plus.

  25. maybe the leaders of the free world could take a hint from this and realize that oil, economy, foreign debt, terrorism, global warming, wars

But Jug, it’s not as if presidential contenders of other nations have never put their families forward. On the contrary, family up front with the candidates has always been an SOP at election. Exudes stability, generosity, transparency, etc. But I don’t think it is essential to focus a campaign speech on anecdotes about nanays, tatays, ates, sisters, kuyas, friends… there must be a limit.

G8 and G20 leaders don’t meet every month. And when they do meet, there’s little time for leaders to dwell on family and Kris Aquino-like trivia in their speeches. So, Aquino had better be forewarned.

  26. Oh, he talked about how his father, Ninoy, would tell him the importance of education. Which is what he said he will try to give to Filipino children by curbing graft and corruption.

Fine. But did he say how he would try to curb graft and corruption?

The details will be taken up by the commitee or task force that will be created for this purpose 🙂 (as usual) meantime, he keeps his nose clean himself to set an example.

  28. “when my mother was still alive…” it could work, knowing how Cory is admired worldwide and will solidify

Or it could elicit the remark, “But she’s already dead. What I’m interested in is what you, old chap, can do!”

  29. Whoever wins as president will have his hands full and will live under a microscope 24/7…I can’t imagine why someone will want this kind of life…

You remind me of my old French boss, get straight down to business, no beating around the bush…questions that can be answered with yes and no should be treated as such, no explanations unless specifically asked for…you’re more european than asian already 🙂

  32. One thing Aquino should never ever say or threaten to do vis a vis foreign leaders is he would ask his mother to do a multo act if they didn’t do what he wanted… they might seriously think he should be in a loony bin.

  33. if attendance at Noy rallies are one fourth or one sixth of Villar rallies……. no wonder Imelda feels secure that BongBong is getting elected as senator.

  34. I noticed some leaders like GMA would proclaim themselves czars of these task force/committees, ie drugs, corruption, etc…a very effective way to avoid getting investigated themselves…

  35. you’re more european than asian already 🙂

Eh…c’est bien naturel, mon vieux Jug!

  36. florry florry

Nonoy is not known as a good speaker. Using just one kind of speech in every rally throughout the campaign period, I can imagine that by now, he already mastered and memorized it word for word, even the commas and the periods that he can “recite” it even in his sleep.

Maybe, it’s his way of covering up his deficiencies in qualities as a leader. He is misleading and diverting the attention of the people by focusing and telling anecdotes about his dead parents multo, sisters and maybe even his pamangkins, as if it has something to do in running the affairs of the country. As a presidential candidate he should be talking about things that concern the welfare of the people and the country, not stories that only interest him and has nothing to do with it.

It only shows he has nothing to offer, he has no imagination, no leadership and no vision.

Maybe Mar will be the next FG and VP at the same time, wink! wink!

Kaya nga nagpapasalamat ako, this year wala akong kandidato.

Why not ask Pidal to endorse Noynoy?

Personally, I find politicians’ speeches boring except for Marcos’ and Ninoy. When both started to talk, even if you don’t plan to listen, you end up.. well, listening. 🙂

  47. Cory learned to deliver speeches and became good at it. But Gloria couldn’t hack it. Her voice and intonation are just so very frog-like.

Gloria goes, “Croak…croak…croak…, and croak some more…”

Ibig mong sabihin ay gloria is not a Filipino citizen? She should not be the acting temporary permanent president of the Pidal Republic being a Croatian?

  49. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

I heard Noynoy once on radio coverage in one of his rallies.

What struck me was that I didn’t tune out like what I usually do with the usual bombastic speakers. His style was different. It was conversational. No yelling. No ranting.

He mostly talked about corruption and its effects on all aspects of our lives, especially on education.

Some friends who attended the rally later told me the crowd was mostly in a hush listening intently.

#52, if that’s so, peke talaga ang psycho report. 🙂

  51. I don’t want to jinx Noynoy, so I’ll say Villar will win all the time…All my manoks sumemplang na kasi, Lacson, Trillanes, etc…

  52. Gaya-gaya si jug hahaha. Ako naman Lacson, Roxas, Escudero. Nag-babu na lahat. Meron din akong jinx. Last winning vote ko si Macoy pa in 1986, na-tsugi pa. Hehehe.

Join me in my “Bigo Partylist”, it’s not too late. There’s still hope for Gibo to claim what he deserves, let’s give him a chance. A survey which ended last month by Kariton News of the Cordillera have shown Gibo overtook Noynoy by eight percentage points; 38% to 30%.

  54. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

I think Chiz should be more circumspect in his words. There was no need for those snide remarks about Mar Roxas.

“Kulang sa kalyo,” “Chiz” says of Mar.

That’s why, he said he had decided to support Binay for Vice-President.

“Not someone rich, not an ‘ilustrado,’ one who is courageous, a man of honor and a genuine member of the opposition.”

Asked if his support for Binay was aimed at thwarting Roxas’ anticipated run for the presidency in 2016, he said

“Why should I be making enemies this early? It’s not in my interest to draw the line this early if indeed that is on my mind.”

Chiz, word of unsolicited advice lang…Prudence is the better part of ambition and arrogance.”.
