Trust equals confidence

The latest survey of the Social Weather Station should encourage President Benigno Aquino III to be his own man and assert his leadership as influence groups exert pressure on him, some out of a genuine desire to help him and others to push their own agenda.

The survey conducted June 25 to 28, a few days before Aquino’s inauguration as the country’s 15th president, showed that 88 per cent of adult Filipinos said they have much trust on him while only four percent said had little trust in him. Eight per cent were undecided.

Vice President Binay also got good ratings with 77 per cent trusting him much and only eight per cent have “little trust” in him. Fourteen per cent were undecided.

Eighty-eight percent is very high. Higher than his mother’s high trust rating of plus 72 in October 1986, eight months after she ascended into the presidency through People Power that ended more than two decades of Marcos dictatorship. Higher also than the March 1995 excellent rating of Pope John Paul , whose Philippine visit two months earlier attracted a five million throng at the Rizal Park.

Sabi pa niya, may isa pa silang anak at nakakulong.

P-Noy orders De Lima to review Trillanes case; says coup charge unjust

Aquino says coup charge vs Trillanes ‘unjust’; Trillanes posted bail in connection with Manila Pen November 2007 incident

abs-cbnNEWS.com

President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III on Friday labeled as unjust a coup charge against former Navy Lt. Senior Grade and now Senator Antonio Trillanes IV for his involvement in the 2003 Oakwood Mutiny.

Update July 18 from Justice Secretary Leila de Lima:

” We abide by the directive of the President. I am reviewing the records of the case and have consulted our prosecutors, especially those handling it before the court.

“I understand that the case will soon be deemed submitted for the court’s decision, upon the filing of the required memoranda by both the prosecution and the defense. At this stage, the options for the prosecution may be limited. And the courts have absolute discretion in the disposal of a case once it has acquired jurisdiction over it.

“On the other hand, the President has the absolute prerogative to direct the Secretary of Justice, as an alter ego, to review the case against Senator Trillanes. It is in consonance with his oath to do justice to every man. That is also part of the thrust and mission of the new DOJ,” Secretary De Lima added.

“I will, however, exercise care and circumspection under the circumstances, given the independence of the judiciary,” Secretary De Lima further added.

Aquino said he has ordered Justice Secretary Leila de Lima to review the coup charge against Trillanes since the elements of a coup were not present during the short-lived mutiny.

“Trillanes was first incarcerated by virtue of the charge of participating in a coup. However, if you review the Revised Penal Code, there is a provision that says a coup is committed if there is a swift, violent attack. Then there’s an enumeration. The enumeration does not include a hotel,” he said at the inauguration of the Philippine National Police School of Values and Leadership (SVL) in Subic Freeport Zone, Zambales.

Poll protest linked to battle for Senate presidency

(This story came out last Tuesday but Basiang got in the way from my posting it here.)

Senate Electoral Tribunal’s findings present strong proof of cheating in 2007 polls

The Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET) has voted to recount over 75% of 73,000 precincts nationwide in the 2007 senatorial elections, after Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri filed a counter-protest to an electorial complaint filed by Atty. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III.

The SET voted to do the recount, which could last beyond Zubiri’s term, even if it was already proven that Pimentel won over Zubiri in the polls.

With just a little over 18,000 votes, Juan Miguel Zubiri snatched the last spot in the 2007 senatorial elections from Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III.

Losing by default

I read that in the training of members of the Aquino cabinet on how to deal with media, public relations practitioner Carol Espiritu stressed the importance of credibility.

How does one achieve credibility? By telling the truth.

Never lie to media. You may be able to get away with it for a few hours or a day but it would be discovered later on. You can’t fool all the people all the time.

That’s what happened in the press conference of Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo last Wednesday. He cited two cases as legal justification for his recommendation to extend for three months the stay of 21 political ambassadors of Gloria Arroyo : Mendoza vs Quisumbing, 186 DCRA110 and Topacio vs Angeles, 76 Phil 12.
