Noynoy: Read my lips: No new taxes

Says P1 trillion lost to graft under GMA

Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III yesterday vowed not to impose new taxes or even increase tax rates if he is elected president.

“My vision is to transform our country into one where we have lower tax rates enjoyed by all, rather than have some enjoy absolute tax exemptions while we burden the rest of the economy with very high tax rates,” Aquino said.

Aquino spoke before businessmen and the diplomatic corps during the “Presidential Candidate Series” sponsored by the Makati Business Club at the Manila Peninsula Hotel.

Aquino’s “no new taxes” approach was similar to then US presidential candidate George H. W. Bush’s famous phrase “Read my lips: No new taxes” at the 1998 Republican National Convention when he accepted the nomination.

“With universal low tax rates, we will encourage entrepreneurs and enterprises to invest and create jobs in any industry,” Aquino said to wide applause from the audience.

He said an Aquino administration will pursue the rationalization of fiscal incentives to investors to lower the budget deficit and stem revenue losses.

Noynoy: vblog will focus on issues instead of personality

Starting today up to Nov. 27, 2009, the daily activities of Sen. Noynoy Aquino, Liberal Party presidential candidate, can be seen in capsule, in a video blog in his website:www.noynoy.ph.

Speaking from his residence in Times street via video satellite with reporters assembled at the office of Campaigns and Grey, an advertising and public relations firm, Aquino admits to being not so New Media- savvy but said “he is a student by nature.”

Noynoy: caught in-between

Noynoy Aquino

Last week, there were talks that former President Joseph Estrada and the Liberal Party presidential candidate Noynoy Aquino were meeting again.

I’m using the word “again” because the two met last Sept. 28, two days after typhoon “Ondoy” turned many areas in Metro Manila into an ocean and battered thousands of families.

The Sept. 28 meeting, held at the Estrada residence on Polk Street in Greenhills, San Juan, was widely reported. Reports said Aquino was accompanied by his sisters while Sen. Jinggoy Estrada joined in the dinner/meeting.

Reports said they talked about “uniting the opposition” or fielding a common senatorial slate.

But then, three weeks after that meeting Estrada launched his presidential bid for 2010 in Tondo. So much about “unity.”

Last week, ABS-CBN quoted Estrada as saying that it’s the Aquino camp that is asking for a meeting. I asked an insider in the Aquino camp and they denied this quoting Noynoy as saying, “I did not ask for a meeting” with Erap.

A source said even without a second Erap-Noynoy meeting , there are negotiations for the inclusion of Sen. Jinggoy Estrada in the LP ticket.

Ano ang gagawin kay Gloria Arroyo?

The discussions in the previous post on this question of how the next president would handle Gloria Arroyo have been vibrant. However, I noticed that some quoted just a part of the answers which could be misleading.

For my column for Abante I got all the answers of the four presidential aspirants: Senators Manny Villar, Benigno Aquino III, Francis Escudero and Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro.

Although Che-Che Lazaro didn’t ask exactly the same questions to all the interviewees, more or less, you have an idea of their stand or lack of stand.

Noynoy Aquino sets the pace

No doubt about it. With his declaration of his presidential bid in the 2010 elections, Sen. Noynoy Aquino, is dictating the agenda and pace of the campaign.

The issue has become character versus competence. This simplification, unfair it may be, reflects the people’s frustration with Gloria Arroyo. People are willing to take the risk with someone without a track record of leadership as long as he is not corrupt.

It was the death of former President Cory Aquino which triggered the interest for Noynoy and advanced the timetable of the campaign.

Nonoy declares presidential bid

noynoy declaration

With those words, Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III, declared his presidential bid for the 2010 elections in an morning press conference on the 40th day of the passing of his mother, President Corazon Aquino, at Club Filipino, the same venue where she took her historic oath on Feb. 25, 1986 after the ouster of President Ferdinand Marcos.

Noynoy:enabler or suppressor of the new politics

by Nicanor Perlas

In the past few days, I have been bombarded with text messages from friends as well as interviews with the media on what I think of the Mar-Noynoy announcements. Will I, like Senator Mar Roxas, also renounce my intention to run as a presidential candidate in the 2010 national elections and support the presidential candidacy of Senator Noynoy Aquino?

The short answer is “No”. I will not renounce my intention to run as a presidential candidate. And “Yes”, I will encourage Noynoy to resign from the Liberal Party, run as an independent presidential candidate, and join the on-going conversation and unification efforts among non-traditional political parties and movements.

Noynoy can stifle the growth of new politics. Or he can enable the new politics that is emerging all throughout the country. Allow me to elaborate.
