Abalos must go

There is no way that the degradation of the Commission on Election can be arrested with Benjamin Abalos as its head. Abalos must go.

There is no way that the people’s trust in the electoral body can be restored with Abalos as chairman. Abalos must go.

The Comelec was established as the guardian of the ballot. What every Filipino writes on his ballot is his exercise of his right to vote, which gives life to the democratic principle that sovereignty resides in the people and all government authority emanates from them.

Kontra-Daya slams Comelec, Arroyo

THE presence of several watchdogs in this year’s elections is an offshoot of the fraudulent 2004 elections.

It is a reflection of the Filipino people’s belief in elections as a means of effective and democratic change in the country’s leadership.

In its post-election report, Kontra- Daya one of the non-government watchdogs this election, says the Commission on Elections and Gloria Arroyo are both liable for the questionable reports of the May 14 elections.

A Makati court hearing the multimillion peso class action suit filed by a group of journalists against First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo yesterday ordered the plaintiffs to appear before the court and submit a manifestation on whether they intend to pursue their case or not.

“The plaintiffs in this case are directed to submit a written manifestation as to whether they intend or not, indeed all of them are inclined to pursue this case,” said the order signed by Makati regional trial court branch 143 Judge Zenaida Galapate-Laguilles.

Media access to Trillanes

Last March, a number of working journalists wrote Judge Oscar Pimentel Sr. of the Makati Regional Trial Court to give us access to detained Lt. (s.g.) Antonio Trillanes, senatorial candidate of the Genuine Opposition.

We cited in our petition provisions in the Bill of Rights of the Constitution that guarantee “freedom of speech, of expression, or of the press.”

Charged with coup d’etat in connection with what is referred to as “Oakwood mutiny” on July 27, 2003, Trillanes is detained at the Marine Brig in Fort Bonifacio.
